Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on LEGO Ideas

Posted by ,

This LEGO Ideas project by bruceywan has received so much media coverage since its inception only a week and a half ago, with over 3,000 supporters already. Therefore, it is only fair that we cover it too! Let us see what this article can do to help it reach its goal.

The project is of course based on the 90's TV show phenomenon Power Rangers; the franchise has experienced numerous reboots since then (including a new theatrical film coming next spring), so this proposal could not have come at a better time.

Read on after the break as I go more in-depth with the model and minifigures...

First off, here is the project creator's motivation:

"I have loved the concept of LEGO Ideas from its inception and have been impressed by every set released. I have been waiting for the right idea and the right time to try my hand at a project. As a lifelong LEGO builder (and Power Rangers fan!), and now the proud father of two Power Rangers fans, this set seemed like a no-brainer. Please help me make LEGO Power Rangers a reality; if not for my sons and I, than for everyone to celebrate the upcoming movie and/or the Power Rangers’ 25th anniversary in 2018!"

Onto the set proposal project itself! Here is a comparison between the 'real' Zordon's Command Center and the potential LEGO one:

Pretty spot on! The creator has also attached his own sort of description for the project...

"Ay-yi-yi-yi-yi! Rita’s escaped! Time to recruit a team of teenagers with attitude! Enter the MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, Jason and Tommy, each ready to morph and save Angel Grove from the likes of Rita Repulsa and her horde of evil space aliens!

Teleport to the Command Center and behold the viewing globe as Zordon and Alpha 5 prepare the POWER RANGERS for their next battle. May the Power protect you!"

The set idea includes everything you could possibly need: a colorful command center featuring computer terminals, Zordon's hologram and more.

The minifigures include robotic assistant Alpha 5 and all seven rangers with removable helmets:

  • Zack the Black Ranger
  • Kimberly the Pink Ranger
  • Billy the Blue Ranger
  • Trini the Yellow Ranger
  • Jason the Red Ranger
  • Tommy the Green Ranger
  • Tommy the White Ranger

The model and figures are fun, detailed, and fantastic tributes to the franchise; it would be the perfect collector's item for fans, in my opinion.

The only issue I could see with the project's ability to pass review is licensing, as well as the possible need for new molds for the helmets and armor; something Ideas does not allow. I would love to see bruceywan try to find a workaround for this, in order to give the project a bit more of a chance.

But the market is definitely there, with appeal to both kids who currently love the franchise and AFOLs with great nostalgia for it. That's the winning Ideas formula, isn't it?

Now, let us make this set happen! You can support the project right here. Much luck to Bruce on his journey to 10k.

Unfortunately, this one will not pass. Mega Construx has the license for Power Rangers and their sets are hitting stores in the US now.

^ Oh, wow, didn't know that. Major blow... still worth a shot, though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As stated above, the license is in currently use with another brand so this project doesn't stand a chance. I'm surprised it hasn't been rejected already.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ And I'm surprised nobody brought it up until now!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So no licence available and no new mouldings possible: why the sneck did you bother highlighting this dead duck?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ I seriously did not know about Mega Bloks' effort until now. But I'll delete this if people really want me to.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Looks so sweet!!.. But too bad it's licensed by another another company :( cool news though!!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the license belongs to somebody else.

True story. The PR figures I have in my Lego city are the *only* Megabloks sets that I own, and I don't intend to ever own any more (the quality is really awful. I've seen Chinese knock-off clone brands that have better quality than Megabloks, and I think that says really bad things about Megabloks). It's a dream that Lego has the PR license, but alas.

Anyway, it's topical. Lionsgate and Saban Brands are doing a new movie (reimagining the franchise from the very beginning for the 21st century) that was filmed in Canada and is due out in March 2017, or thereabouts. Elizabeth Banks is playing Rita, which actually is the part I'm looking forward to the most.

Looks like a wall and a floor to me with some Minifigures - Dunno why this is so common in ideas projects

By in United States,

Regarding the licensing, I thought the same too, but then I saw this:

"Hey Everyone!

Jason Bischoff here, Director of Global Consumer Products for Saban Brands. Hope all is well! Normally, I'm a creeper around these parts (always have been, will likely always be). That said, I've noticed a lot of misinformation re: Megabloks and Bruce Lowell's recent Lego Ideas project and I'd like to clear the water.

Before we get started, please note that this is a special, one time post. I will not be taking questions on this topic in the forum (nor will I be answering other questions here). Should you like to get in touch, you can do so publically via twitter @prometheanworks. While I can't always answer (per the limits of my job), I'd like to think that I always do my best (hopefully some of you will vouch for that).

OK, on with the show!

>Re: Mega
-This is an older deal (one that I inherited) that is technically still active
-The more-recent Mega product reveals (again) are older in nature and were held for movie timing
-The upcoming MMPR items will see an extremely limited release in specialty stores worldwide (big box retailers TBD)
-It is a non-exclusive deal

>Re: LEGO Ideas
-This was a very pleasant, unexpected surprise; great timing!
-I really commend Bruce Lowell on his design/work!
-There is nothing about the MEGA deal that prevents us from exploring LEGO ideas
-LEGO ideas submissions often find their way into other Lego avenues (full lines, games etc.)

Can't say it enough: if you'd like to see LEGO Power Rangers stuff, we really need you guys to rally up, get behind it and vote with your votes! Sharing on social is also an excellent way to help (and Bruce has made it easy for us with banners available on his website).

Long story short: I think this campaign is a terrific way to show Lego how big and awesome we are as a fandom.

Thanks for listening,

J.
@prometheanworks"

So, there is still a chance that it could get the licensing if it passes the review. As a fan of Power Rangers, I am very excited for this project, even if I would have preferred a Megazord, but that might be too similar to the Voltron project if that one passes review too.

By in United States,

^ Great to know!

Keep campaigning, guys!

By in United States,

I think if it wasn't for The LEGO Batman Movie, Nexo and more so NinjaGo still going strong that LEGO would actually have a series of Power Rangers. But as it stands now multi-colored Ninajas that fight using mech vehicles is way to close to NinjaGo.

Licensing battles aside, I too feel like the values of Power Rangers have spread quite clearly to Ninjago and informed them for Lego. Both brands include school age students that are trained with other-worldly powers and technology by a wise master to defeat invading evil, broadly speaking. Still, having watched Power Rangers growing up, there's nothing that quite beats seeing something as obscure as a snooker cue break being used to launch a fatal attack (think this might've been in a jungle series?)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Come on, Power Rangers but no Ultraman?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@The Rancor ... that was "Wild Force", season 10. The sixth Ranger (Merrick, the Lunar Wolf Ranger) had snooker-theme attacks, and that's how he used to kill monsters.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ ah, so I wasn't going crazy, I was sure I could remember it. I was probably a little too old to still be watching at Series 10 but then my class-mates likely would have said something similar about Lego at the time!

@Zordboy

To be honest, Mega Bloks isn't that bad. I love Lego, believe me, but some of thier sets hold together better. (This might just be the Halo sets, as those are the only ones I have) I feel like Lego fans will immediately trash any other brand. Their can be some competition, and let's be honest, the Communist Lego reviews only showed the absolute worst of Mega Bloks. I love Lego, and own way, way more then Mega Bloks (Like 200 Lego sets and 20 Mega Blok sets) But I feel we don't give them enough credit. Next year with the Communist Lego reviews, I think the reviewer should try a Mega Bloks Halo set, as I feel they compete. Trashing different things only leads to no competition and higher prices, or a company not willing to invest in higher quality because all of their fans are diehard and will buy them no matter what.

@General_Grievous,

Even a decade or so ago, as a young teen, I was totally against Mega Bloks because of my experience with bad sets. I loved the dragons sets and we got a ton of them. We had missing pieces, figures that hadn't completely been injected with plastic, and sets that just straight up wouldn't stick together. They also frequently copied Lego's firing mechanisms a year or so after Lego would have them in Bionicle, but they'd barely work (not that Lego's were THAT much better). The last set anyone in my family got was from like 2008 or 2009, and it had a large piece that was basically only half finished. We were also starting to see some of our old Pyrate and Dragon pieces and figures break. I'd still like to see Lego maintain a good, unique pirate theme (rather than the constant rehashing) and a dragon theme would be awesome (Ninjago has a bit of that,) but even as a young teen I couldn't bring myself to get anymore Mega Bloks sets after all the disappointments I'd had, regardless of if Lego had a comparable theme or not. When I have kids, I'll just MoC something similar out of Lego if they see something they want from another brand.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yeah, there probably have been some great Megabloks sets ... but the ones I bought were mostly terrible. The PR figures were mostly compatible with Lego, and so they stand proudly alongside the JLA and the Avengers in protecting my Lego city from evildoers, but the sets themselves soured me.

Like I said, it'd be a dream come true if Lego actually got the license to actually produce PR toys. I'm not expecting fully-combinable Megazords (although wouldn't that be fantastic?), but it'd still be nice.

By in Spain,

These blue computers bring me memories.

They can replace the helmets by regular helmets with opaque visor fully printed and let Lego solve it when approved.

They can also replace the custom armor by a simple shoulder pad with custom print

What is wrong with you people. Power rangers has to be the biggest pile of s*** ever conceived. Lego PR no thank you.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Hmm... In terms of execution this looks very... Boring and simple. There is very little to actually make this set interesting. All it is the consoles and a backdrop with some minifigures, without any sort of detailing.
If you look at the Doctor Who ideas set you can see that there was a significant amount of detail in the original plan and then Lego added to and improved on the design. With this there is nothing to work with. I would be surprised if this was approved based on the simplicity alone.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Sorry, but this doesn't look appealing. It's a room where most of the pieces are used for a color spectrum backdrop. A room that by itself isn't all that iconic. Sorry, but most succesful ideas licensed sets at least use an iconic standalone thing for the set itself. If it's a room, it has to be inseperable from the licensed franchise, such as the tardis & dr who or the appartment and the big bang theory. Admit it, the only playable thing here are the figures. A set must have something else too!

By in United States,

In the past 3 years, Mega Bloks has been massively improving its quality. It's still not quite to LEGO's level, but it is now very uncommon to get a piece that does not fit well with other pieces in the set, or with other Mega Bloks (sorry, Mega Construx, because they just changed their name) or LEGO pieces. Overall, parts fit is fairly excellent. They also decreased the chance of getting a missing/wrong piece significantly, although that problem has been slightly increasing in regularity recently. Still, it's not that common of a problem, and you can contact their Customer Service to get them to send you a replacement part. I've bought a number of sets and figures, and the only real QC problems I've had were with one blindbagged Halo Elite figure having two left legs; I later bought another, with the correct legs.

While they're still not quite at LEGO's level, Mega Construx is far better than most "knock-off" brands, and are actually trying to do something to differentiate themselves, with their Collectors Series, and their super-poseable figures. I definitely think they get a bad rap, not only due to their past of poor quality, but also the LEGO community's mindset that if it's not LEGO, it's worthless. Mega Construx is definitely a good brand, and, as @General_Grievous said, a good competitor to LEGO.

I hate that they changed their name, though. Mega Bloks is a well-known brand name, and they changed it (at least for the Collectors Series), seemingly only to renew a copyright on the name "Construx", which as far as I can tell, has only been used for 2 relatively unsuccessful non-block-based building system lines in the past.

On the topic of Power Rangers, I agree that this set seems kinda simple for an Ideas set. I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to have the Rangers in minifig form, but I don't think LEGO's going to sell a figure pack in the Ideas line.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This, as others have said, is a pretty plain set. I don't know why it is given even more free publicity. Power Rangers as a set of series is bad, I had to watch them with my kids. They have poor production values and LEGO is not low rent.

Gravatar
By in United States,

sorry but this one is a no go for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I honestly can't understand what anyone sees in this show.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am definitely starting to agree with commenters; maybe including Rita and a small Zord with Mixels joints would make the project more playable and appealing? Perhaps even a small, hidden catapult to make a ranger jump into action? Hopefully the project creator is seeing these suggestions.

And why the hate on the subject matter in general? It's a classic and I, including many others, loved it when we were younger.

It seems like this project in general is getting a bad rap in both basis and licensing... maybe I should have steered clear?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's a box of minifigures with very little to actually 'build' - I'm rather grateful it probably won't pass review based upon licensing

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@ TheBrickPal, I'm sorry for being so dismissive of this article (not you!), but this particularly egregious IDEAS submission breaks two of LEGO's own rules (Licensing and New Parts) and, as you'll have read above, breaks the unwritten rule we all have - Playability.

These articles depress me because they (and their responses) seem to suggest that most LEGO fans want easy solutions, to be lifted and laid instead of trying new things themselves. Maybe you don't see it because you're very young and from a more plentiful society. Maybe I'm very old and from a poorer generation where we quite simply made our own toys from what we had available.

Back in 1983, a pair of 2×2 plates, one either side of a http://rebrickable.com/parts/3651 pin connector on the end of an axle was the front of our RotJ speeder bike. The scout-trooper's head was a white space helmet (broken chin-bar!) on top of a tippex-painted black 1×1 cylinder. We couldn't afford to be Purists, and we certainly couldn't wait twenty years for some Danish stranger to design a set for us.

I'm not a fan of the "Power Rangers", and the set itself is pretty bland.

By in United States,

It's interesting that Saban has officially stepped up and said that the Megabrands license is a "non-exclusive" license and does not preclude a Lego set. That is almost unheard of. Companies do not generally discuss licensing. One suspects that as the Saban guy said, this was a legacy deal from before his time, and is one that is not well serving Saban (as is common with far too many Mega deals it seems. CoD and Halo got a fair shake from them. Many of the rest always suffer poor distribution, poorer marketing and rarely ever hit the shelves or reach consumers.) So Saban has just informally extended an invitation to Lego, and likely opened the door not simply for this project but inclusion in other things, such as the collectible game. That's kind of huge. And just increased the chances of it passing review by an order of magnitude.

As for the set? It's not bad. Not an interesting build by any means, and could use some conflict. A Rita figure and maybe a henchman of some type. (who was the gold dude with wings? Good use for a Chima mold) yeah its mainly a minifig set, but no worse than Dr. Who or the Female Scientists ones.

@TheBrickPal,

I for one am glad you posted it, even tough I'm not a huge fan of the project. It's a new Ideas project that's having sudden success and I'm glad to see that make Brickset's news. Any project that can manage a thousand or so supporters in just a week is pretty big news.

Any one else thinking his inspiration is the fake powers rangers leak

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very meh on the build and no actual pieces for the minfigures.

Some builders seem to get very high on their success when they can go professional with Lego art. They end up with such a big audience that they don't push for new techniques, they just build average stuff and it gets big coverage anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If they do end up making this a set, then they better include some bad-guys of some kind.Other than that, I for one really like this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

OH THE GLORIOUS NOSTALGIA!!!
Anyways, I think this would be a great grab for LEGO. There's so much that can be done with Powerrangers even if it's just the minifigs! They'd look awesome in a small little showdown in your LEGO City!
Although I do think that he may want to include a version with the Power Rangers without the new molds. I think this can be done if they make heads printed to look like the masks and leave out the shoulder pads. This can show that the Rangers can be made without new pieces, but it won't look as great.
((I am questioning the "no new molds" thing though, as Dr.Who got a new mold in the form of his Sonic Screwdriver."

Gravatar
By in United States,

By in Singapore,

I have a collection of Power Ranger robots (known as Sentai Force in Japan) dating back to the late 70s/early 80s. It would definitely be nice to own an official Lego set with the colourful ranger minifigures.

However, I do believe that in some ways TLG already had them, in the form of the Ninjago theme, what with the colourful minifigures and team building/friendship/fightings etc. All they need to do now is to introduce future Ninjago characters in pink, wearing helmets and using special weapons. :)

Btw, don't really understand all the hatred and negativitives on this article, if this project doesn't have what you like can just move on and skip to other articles?
