Fresh Ideas
Posted by rock99rock,
Holy Toledo Legoman! We have had a slew of great submissions since the last Fresh Ideas article. I normally only write about 5 or 6 projects. How about 14 this time! Cars, aircraft, ships, buildings and even a hot air balloon get some love this time around. Check them out!
Hot Rod "Red Rocket"
Just have a look at this bucket! Shiny red paint, fat tires and lots of chrome… what’s not to love? The V8 engine has some great details with the exhaust headers and the carburetors. The SNOT techniques really give the body a smooth finish. This is the 2nd hat nod that Ozzyeatingbats has received in as many Ideas articles from Brickset, with his last one being the Jaguar mentioned by FlagsNZ in his most recent Ideas Showcase. Will this hotrod be as successful as the Jag?
"Green T" - '23 Ford T-bucket
What?? Two hot rods! This green model sports a canopy. The spark plug wires really add some detail rarely used on LEGO engines. Its mean stance really makes it look menacing, as if in motion while still. Norton74 has done a great job getting this project looking clean and ready for the track! Which of the two hotrods are your favorite and why?
1969 Chevrolet Camaro
From some repurposed 1920’s vehicles to the muscle car era, this 1969 Camaro is a stud! The blue paint with white racing stripes give this car an authentic and stock look. The rear view with the tail lights is what really sold me, as if I had just been “whooped” on a drag strip. The side view does have me wanting some tires/wheels that scale better to the body, but overall I really like the vehicle. TheHAWK1209 did a fantastic job designing this machine from a by-gone era of motorsport's history.
1968 Dodge Charger R/T
Another muscle car?? SWEET! This ‘68 Charger by gchagas is massive! The size allowed the designer to really dial in the details for the interior. The only thing holding back this project might be the lack of an engine picture, though gchagas does mention it is there and “realistic looking”. I would also be interested in how many pieces this beast is sporting. Either way, this would be a day 1 purchase for me should it ever make it to store shelves. So what does everyone think of the two muscle cars? Is it the Chevy, or the Dodge that wins this race?
Land Rover Discovery 3
You thought that Charger was detailed? Feast your eyes on this behemoth by chapachuk6839! The fact that this is actually built and not rendered has me sideways with jealousy. This project redefines the vehicles we have seen on Ideas. When your model is so large that you can actually place cupholders, volume knobs, and seatbelt receptacles in the cabin, you are doing LEGO right. The instrument and radio cluster really bring the interior to life. The arm rests and middle storage section just go to show how much thought went into the Land Rover.
Sport Touring Motorcycle
We have written about a motorcycle previously on Fresh Ideas, but there usually are not many quality submissions like this one from Hajdekr. The use of the Technic panels to give this bike its touring look is done fantastically. He makes it look so good, that the parts look like they were made for this project. The working suspension, 3-cylinder engine and steering all give it a very realistic touch. I wonder if the designer has made other LEGO motorcycles? More on him later…
Queen Victoria Cruise Ship
This submission is from Brickset’s own FlagsNZ, and is his first submission to LEGO Ideas. Ever since the last Creator ship left LEGO store shelves, the seas have been a bit dry. This cruise ship is built in similar scale to the most recent Maersk and fills that void! There are so many fine details from the lifeboats, to the interesting techniques used to make the portholes. There is nothing to criticize on this 20” (52cm), 2061-piece model. Wish FlagsNZ good luck on his journey!
Ship In A Bottle, The Flagship Leviathan.
In one day, this project has received nearly 500 votes. Since the Pirates of the Caribbean ships sold out, the natives have grown restless for some full sails. Sometimes a project submission comes along and just reminds you how versatile LEGO can be, and this model did just that! Even the stand for the bottle has a ton of detail. The bottle cap is very unique and just exemplifies the thought process that brought this all together. This project will reach its goal, in possible record time. Submitter JakeSadovich77 has a real winner on his hands here.
Airplane of Legend: Breguet XIV
This is somewhat of a resubmit by the designer whatsuptoday There are a few updates and a livery change from the previous design. I am a big fan of the wings on this model (compared to the 10226 Sopwith Camel) due to the representation of the airfoil, it really adds a touch of reality to this project. It has just under 1000-pieces, and is 20”x14” (35cmx51cm). Check the video for a great look at the details and features.
Hot Air Balloon
I do not recall seeing a minifigure-scaled hot air balloon on Ideas before, so this unique submission really stood out to me. The designer LucaCasciola went to great lengths to make this model look as close to the real-life version, and it shows. There was even an update that improved the look of the balloon, while reducing the piece count by 200 parts! The big question for me is if the model will stand upright without issue. The structural skeleton looks solid, so I guess it is just a matter of not accidently bumping into the shelf!
1930s Department Store and Hotel
Another modular submission (Modular Train Station) was denied in the most recent review. The Old Fishing Store was approved (the first approved building from LEGO Ideas), so I still have hopes for a modular to get approved (I am looking at you Construction Site). This unique design by rh1985moc is very reminiscent of department stores in 1930’s USA. Well, maybe not the color, but I like it and think it stands out great.
Ancient Greek Temple (Minifig-scale)
The Parthenon is an iconic and historic work of Greek architecture, and it translates to LEGO very well! This submission is not actually THE Parthenon, but a temple built from an earlier period. You can read more about that in MA_bricks description on the project page. It is kind of throwing me a curve however, with 6 columns in front instead of the 8 I am accustomed to seeing. Regardless, it is a fantastic model that offers a great playability factor!
The Louvre
If “Big Ben” can get its own Creator version of its little Architecture series self, why not the Louvre? Mr. Brick hopes to have that creation here, with nearly 2700-pieces. With that many pieces, it is understandable that the rear and sides are completely plain… it just just makes the model kind of one dimensional. Regardless, it is a fantastic representation of the Louvre and I would be happy to have this on my shelf next to the Eiffel Tower.
Star Wars Desert Skiff
You know I could not resist throwing in some Star Wars UCS action! The lack of a Star Wars UCS model (Hoth and Death Star notwithstanding) has left an emptiness that needs to be filled. So I present the Desert Skiff by Leanboy. This highly detailed model is easily recognizable from Return of the Jedi. It was not a very popular or memorable vehicle from Star Wars however. Should it deserve an Ultimate Collectors Series version?
Featured Designer - Hajdekr
Hajdekr has been submitting projects for four years, and many of them are motorcycles! There's a few other odds and ends, such as a chainsaw, and a lunar module. Take a look at his other submissions and throw him some support should you see fit.
From Our Readers!
In this new section, we will highlight four projects sent in as suggestions to Brickset. See what your fellow readers are working on, and give them some support!
Thanks for taking the time to read. Which ones did you enjoy most? Remember to vote for your favorite Ideas!

How can you not mention this masterpiece?

Seriously though, there have been some good ones posted recently. It's going to be interesting to see how many projects expire when the first wave of the '60 days to reach 100 votes' kicks in on Monday.
You HAVE to write about JediPippin's Minas Tirith Battle. It would add the perfect edition to any Lord of the Rings fan's collection. Please check it out! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/140511
They look awesome.
Some shameless self-promotion. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/157721
LDD designs don't seem to get a lot of love on Ideas but it does allow you to play around with new colour combinations...
Wow, so many things I love here... the ship in the bottle, the hot air balloon, the Greek temple, the Art Deco department store/hotel... the reader-submitted ones are awesome too!
^^^^^ Some math I did when the announcement first came out about the 60 days rule: "The change affected 58% of current projects (nearly 3200 of 5500), setting their “Days Left” counter to 60 days." The site is about to get much cleaner :)
I really like Ancient Wonders and New Wonders. It's surprising that LEGO Architecture didn't release something like that already. It's super nice to see that LEGO Ideas is getting cleaned up from all the clutter.
^^I've got a couple that'll survive the cut.
A good clear out is long overdue, and I think it'll help a lot. But they still need to get a grip of what constitutes a decent project.
Feel free to vote for them!
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/117403 for example.
And of course any last minute votes for this one too...
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/142104
Visumohan started it...
The Zoetrope is my favourite from the list above. It's a very clever idea and well executed too.
I need that ship in a bottle!
Do you guys think Lego would ever make a Zulu,
Rorke's Drift lego ideas set?
Thanks rock99rock for taking the time to put this overview together. I try to keep up with the new additions etc but it is very time consuming. Supported everything here! I would be SO geeked (am I dating myself here?) to have the 23 Ford, the Hot Air Balloon and Ship in a Bottle! There goes my LEGO budget AGAIN!
I need a few more supporters to make the cut: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/149380
I really like the ship in a bottle. I wish they could just have common-sense moderators that would stop any crummy projects from getting published.
for the european market i like https://ideas.lego.com/projects/155745
VG Golf GTI Mk1
cute model looks sweet
I would totally buy the Desert Skiff if it became a set.
^Re: the desert skiff; Lego has already released a desert skiff twice and have another one scheduled for 2017!
I'd like to see a 'has Lego released this set before?' question in the idea posting process. I know things can be improved upon, but is it really an 'idea' in the true sense if it is a rehash?
@fuzzythoughts - Thank you for the kind words! It is very time consuming, yet rewarding because of comments like yours.
Liking the ship in a bottle and would definately buy this. These things have always struck me as extremely intricate in real life and it's just such a great idea to transfer this fragile assembly into Lego. Size seems about right too for an Ideas set and it's also aimed at the typical Ideas target Group, I guess.
Not many of these are really doing anything for me. I do like the hotel and linked construction site, though. They're cool.
They're all terrific, but i particularly love the ship in a bottle and the Ancient and New Wonders.
That ship in a bottle, wow. Just wow. Have voted, would buy.
The wonders of the world ideas are magnificent. I would prefer them in an elongated version of an Architecture skyline but the actual techniques used are great - particularly for the ancient wonders.
I feel like we've seen plenty of cars now. Not that there's anything wrong with the ideas because they still look amazing, but I feel like we need more non-licensed Ideas to come to fruition! The fishing cabin is a good start.
First of all, thanks to Rock99rock for encouraging me to submit the Queen Victoria ship model on to LEGO Ideas. Your feedback was the catalyst I needed. Thanks, also, for including it here in your article.
As for the other selected projects; I agree that all of them are worthy Ideas projects. I have supported them all, and left comments on their pages.
I really like the two hot-rod cars, the ship in a bottle, land rover, Airplane of Legend and touring motor cycle.
I wish all the best to all the other project owners listed here in this article.

Better yet, suspend it from the ceiling!
I typically like the really creative ideas. I mean, that T-bucket (and everyting else Norton74 builds) is awesome but it's also yet another car. Don't get me wrong, I might even buy it if it were to become a set but projects like 'Zoetrope' and 'Ship in a Bottle' are more inspiring to me. They use Lego in a way that I haven't seen before. The Maze was another great example of great usage of Lego.
So many cars... its rather disappointing that we can't come up with some unique designs of out own and instead need to copy things from the past.
@FlagsNZ - As a lover of Ocean Liners and LEGO, I need this even if it never becomes an official set! Please tell me there are instructions available? I would be very willing to pay a good chunk of change to own your beautiful model. Heck, I'd buy 2 and turn one into the Queen Elizabeth as well! Lol
Very well done!
So the number of projects on ideas went down by about 60%. From just under 5900 to about 2400. Any thoughts?
Nice projects. Here's one which has been uploaded on November 2nd and has reached almost 2,000 supporters by now. Well done bruceywan who uploaded and designed the project 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers':

Anyone else see this article posted twice on the homepage or is it just me?
That ship in the bottle has got to be the coolest ideas project I've seen in a long time!
