Christmas Build-Up: Day 24

Final day! Christmas is quickly approaching, its Eve is here, our advent countdown is just about over and celebration preparations are quickly ending.

So was the best saved for last?

That depends on who you ask! In my opinion, this model of the big guy, Santa Claus itself, is wonderfully executed and so very much better than that ugly little girl from a few days back. However, it might not be the BEST one. He is surrounded by multiple presents, not unlike the ones in Wednesday's sled. My only question is, why is he on grass rather than snow?

So there you go, dear readers; all twenty-four models built, taken apart, rebuilt and reviewed! Join me after the break as I give my grade on this final one as well as recap all of the ones preceding it...

Overall - 5.0 - A great conclusion to the Christmas Build-Up set, as well as appropriately festive.

Now, let's recap what I scored all of the individual models, and then average that up...

  • Day 1: 3.0
  • Day 2: 4.5
  • Day 3: 1.0
  • Day 4: 4.0
  • Day 5: 5.0
  • Day 6: 4.5
  • Day 7: 3.0
  • Day 8: 2.0
  • Day 9: 4.5
  • Day 10: 2.5
  • Day 11: 5.0
  • Day 12: 5.0
  • Day 13: 3.0
  • Day 14: 4.5
  • Day 15: 3.5
  • Day 16: 3.0
  • Day 17: 5.0
  • Day 18: 1.0
  • Day 19: 3.0
  • Day 20: 5.0
  • Day 21: 4.5
  • Day 22: 5.0
  • Day 23: 3.5
  • Day 24: 5.0

In total, then - 3.7. When you get down to it, it's a very good addition to the advent calendar lineup, and I am surprised that its concept had never been done until now. Best of all, it was given away for free! More please, LEGO...

It is now time for me to thank all of you for joining me on this nearly month long adventure. Whether you agreed with my views and guesses or not, I hope you found it informative and fun. I definitely had fun writing these articles up!

Wherever you are, and whatever you celebrate, I hope you have a Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, nice Kwanzaa, or any other holiday really. I look forward to continuing to serve you all with the best news, reviews and editorials I can in 2017!

As always, I hope your presents make that special rattling sound...

By in Australia,

I don't know, I think that you're being generous, because I found them more miss than hit (and some of the models were just ... baffling). But they weren't all bad. I loved the little bridge (or was it a castle? Or was there a castle as well? I work in toy shop, so December tends to leave me feeling fuzzy).

By in United Kingdom,

Great work reviewing these! Merry Christmas!

I'm trying to decide whether to keep all the parts together or put them into the sorting bin. I added extra parts from my collection to keep all of them built, so I suspect I'll reclaim the parts. Besides, I'm not sure I'll want to build it again next year... Hmmm...

Either way, it's been a fabulous gift overall.

I think this has been great, and a cut above the usual advent calendar sets ( with the exception of this year's City and Star Wars calendars).

I've really enjoyed it (other than being confused about what exactly a couple of the animals actually were!).

I'm an AFOL, but tomorrow's AFOLs are the kids playing with Police/ Fire sets (that today's AFOLs sometimes find a bit boring).

So, whilst there was nothing particularly difficult here, there were lots of fun little builds to entertain the next generation.

My only worry re 2017 is whether there'll be lots of simple cheap accessible sets to encourage today's young's (since Mixels have been a nice introduction for them) - collectable Minifigs are fun but not a lot of building (and, maybe more importantly, not a lot of scope for creative re-building). Something like this Advent box would be great.

It's been fun.

Thanks for the reviews! I think this box highlights how good lego is with a bit of imagination and not a lot of pieces you can build almost anything. And it was free! Big thumbs up from me.

By in Ireland,

I really enjoyed all these builds, even the weird ones. Was fun reading the reviews too. Going to keep the box for the kids to build next year. I like todays build, its a nice one to keep built for Christmas day and at least its not creepy like yesterdays snowman.

By in Poland,

I would be so happy if they did something like this for a Creator Advent Calendar (sold regularly like others, not some special freebie).

By in Sweden,

I was able to store away all the bricks in a 270ml jar; it's a small set. But it punches above its weight thanks to smart reusing of bricks. Hope to see more like this in the future.

Thanks for the reviews. I really enjoyed this calendar more than I thought I would. This is the only Lego calendar I own and like the possibility of rebuilding. It was also fun to try and keep as many sets together as possible even though that occasionally meant making a few substitutions using the given parts. I hope Lego does continues with these in the coming years. As I mentioned in an earlier post it might be fun to have a thread in the forum to discuss and share photos. People could show their alternate builds with substitutions as well their collections of how many and which ones they had currently built at a given time.

@tallblocktoo I think alternative builds would be great to see. And instructions for us to build them.

Thanks to the reviewer for doing a great job at this. Lots of hard work to write and think up opinions. Much appreciated!

As for my family? My boys (6&8) were given clues in a wooden box to read every day to use to find the hidden baggie of bricks to make the model. They almost enjoyed the poems my wife wrote more than some of the obscure models. But they persevered and rather enjoyed the building process each day. They would have liked enough parts to make all the items at the same time, but for free, we can't complain. Will we get it next year? Likely not. But I will read the reviews again for sure!

Thanks for all the reviews. This was fun, and a good idea for a calendar. Merry Christmas to you!

By in Netherlands,

I liked this set, even more because it was free. Yes, some of the builds were a little outlandish, but hey, they did what they had to do with a very limited set of bricks,

There's only one small improvement that I would have liked: not having to disassemble the build of the previous day to be able to build the next one. Somethimes a little creativity helped - and also not minding having exactly the same colors as the instructions required - but the last few days that would not have helped a great deal.

Santa is a nice last build and great that they kept it a secret (I will not re-start a discussion about how it was dealt with here...) by not putting it on the box.

Let's hope there will be e new one next year!

By in United States,

We managed to acquire two sets and have been taking it in turns to build them as a family, adding parts from our own collection as needed to keep all of the 24 builds. My son and I are going to re-sort the original contents post-Christmas and challenge ourselves to come up with 24 of our own models using the same bricks. Must be able to improve on a few of those animal creations!

By in Canada,

I got this Freebie, but had already committed myself to the SW Advent, so I gave this one as an early Xmas present to my nephew. As a result, I have been following the reviews and even poked a few "monkey" jokes in the comments over the days. Now that day 24 is here, I can give this assessment in all fairness: I am glad I gave it to him instead of keeping it myself! He is enjoying it very much

Whilst this set wasn't perfect, I found it fun overall and great for a freebie. Thanks for taking the time to do the reviews.

Aw, how I love that special rattling sound...XD
But thanks for the great reviews, and if they make this type of calendar again, I'll buy it again!
