Review: Tartan Batman

Batman sports an enormous range of different suits in The LEGO Batman Movie, some of which are rather outlandish. Tartan Batman is one of the stranger ones and is currently available with the Chaos in Gotham City book which is beginning to appear on store shelves in Europe and will soon be available elsewhere.

This minifigure was revealed a little over a month ago and it appeals to me a great deal as I love these wacky Batsuits and am always pleased to see a variety of different cultures represented in LEGO products.

Minifigure

Tartan Batman wears traditional highland dress and is therefore ideally suited to playing the bagpipes, an occasional necessity according to the first page of Chaos in Gotham City. His cowl is cast in dark brown and matches the spongey cape which is fixed around the neck alongside a printed golden torque. This is visible on both sides of the torso and a simple leather sword belt also crosses the front and back.

Tartan Batman

No highlander would be complete without a belted plaid and this extends across the left of Batman's chest, leaving his arms exposed and showing off some muscles in a manner which suits the boastful Caped Crusader. It is fixed by a brooche with a decorative Batman insignia and features a tartan pattern of dark green and red. The legs are dual-moulded and include a bright green kilt which contrasts nicely with the muted tones of the cape, cowl and boots.

Tartan Batman

This Batman minifigure is armed with an enormous pearl silver sword. His reversible head features a suitably aggressive expression on one side and a satisfied smirk on the other, completing the figure perfectly.

Overall

The range of different Batsuits released in sets and polybags over the last few weeks is thoroughly impressive and this is one of my favourites yet. Not only is the concept fun but the level of detail is more than a match for any of the other minifigures from The LEGO Batman Movie. The highland clothing has been portrayed very effectively and I think it reflects Batman's dour personality quite nicely as well.

The book consists primarily of puzzle pages and comic strips so is unlikely to appeal to teenage or adult fans. It is priced at £6.99 in the UK and $8.99 in the US which is reasonably expensive for a single minifigure but was well worth it from my point of view as I appreciate these outlandish Batsuits. If you are similarly interested in bizarre Batman minifigures then you will likely be pleased with this purchase and I certainly recommend it to younger fans who may enjoy Chaos in Gotham City as much as Tartan Batman.

Update: Thanks to ateague for pointing out that the book is currently available at just £3.49 from Amazon in the UK. It is certainly a worthy purchase at that price.

meh. Being someone with Scottish ancestry, this is one of the better obscure Batman suits to me, but I still wouldn't pay $9 for it

By in United States,

Nice review. Nine dollars does seem a bit expensive if you have no interest in the book. But it is currently available for pre-order for less than $7 from Amazon.

I've bought Batzarro and the movie it came with. I just wish this was with a $12 movie that be on sale for $6 as at least a movie is enjoyable. This is a tiny book.

But he looks good and I'm always up for more Batmen... Batmans?

The Lego batman movie has thrown up some strange batsuits (why does the fairy batsuit exist?) but this is probably one of the best I've seen so far

Just ordered for £3.49 on Amazon - cheaper than getting my son a magazine. He will really like that batman figure.

By in United Kingdom,

I love Amazon for deals like this, £3.49 delivered a real bargain when compared to a single blind bag mini figure.

By in Puerto Rico,

It looks interesting and it will fit great in the movie Braveheart.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the heads-up. Ordered off amazon for £3.50 as well. Plus I chucked in the Ladybird Books Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse for half price for another £3.50 because my 5 year old daughter is never too young to learn how to wield a machete or a crossbow.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the heads-up ateague. I really wanted this minifigure but not at the £5.49 price which I had last seen it for but at £3.49 it's much more appealing. A nice review too CapnRex. I'm not too interested in the book itself but I'm sure I'll find someone who will appreciate it though so it won't go to waste.

Currently $6.59 pre-order on Amazon USA. I was torn at $8.99. And will just give the book to my nephew... who I'm sure will feel cheated for not getting the minifigure. OK... I'll order 2.

By in United States,

It's only 3.50 pounds? That's lik the cost of a regular minifigure, come on Amazon USA match it.

And someone dare ask why fairy Batsuit exist?! The better question is why did it take so long for us to get fairy Batman!

By in United States,

Lego has already released a minifigure with a cloth kilt. That would be a nice addition to this.

I love the Minifig and i hope I could use it for my castle theme, but this Batman Logo in the chest just ruined everything! :(

ordered mine awhile ago for $6 and change Amazon, looking forward to adding it to my collection!

@ Samie, I was thinking the same thing. This minifigure would be way more appealing if the bat logo wasn't on there. Of course, it is was more appealing to batman fans with it on there. I need to figure out how to cover it up.

By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the heads-up on the price. I have ordered it to go with the other costumes.

Does anyone know if the film will have cinema-distributed minifig a like TLM emmet in pyjamas and Robo-DJ?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sainsbury's and Tescos both have the books for £3.49.

By in United States,

Thanks for the review. I think it's an awesome figure. I especially enjoy the comments from people that don't like it and let us know they won't be buying it.

By in United Kingdom,

There are a few Lego books with minifig for around the £3-4 mark including one with superman, the star wars and ninjago annuals. Good value for the figures alone.

By in United States,

I found this today while shopping. I bought it for the fun Batman variant. The book shows two additional Batman costumes, which I assume will be released in the future. It also shows Bane on a very cool vehicle!
