I WANT!!!
$250 and no power functions included? Disappointing. It's beautiful though!
Oh My .......
First impressions have won me over completely. Am intrigued to see how the mechanics of it works with the animals going up and down while rotating.
And it's great to see a sense of humour in there with the nauseous Minifig.
I finally realise what I've been saving my VIP points for.
Really excited for this! The amusement rides of the last couple years are some of my favorites. Glad to see another carousel to somewhat make up for my disappointment in not getting 10196-1 Grand Carousel when I had the chance!
What a beauty!
I'm not into the Fairground sets they've been releasing but this really is a fantastic model. The animals are beautiful. Some might be disappointed by the fabric canopy instead of brick-built but I think it works very well. Using the vehicle fenders as adornments is pretty clever. Looking forward to the video to see it in motion.
It's gorgeous!
I never had a chance to own the original Grand Carousel, but I own the 2015 Ferris Wheel and love how it looks. This will be the perfect complement to out. Now to find some space for it...
I love the series of amusement rides (the mixer, the ferris wheel) but was hoping for something other than a carousel since I think the original grand carousel 10196 is absolute perfection.
Ohhhhh, I can spot a few nice recolours! Great!
Are those stickers or printed pieces?
Amazing!
Beautiful set but getting those stickers aligned properly will be brutal.
^ Ohio, the gold 'mirrored' pieces in the center and the gold ovals at the canopy edge appear to be stickers. The panels with a book graphic appear to be printed, as do the 1x2 tickets. I could be wrong, going only by the images.
I love it!
But what is the deal with the steps? Right where you might expect there would be another animal, there is a set of steps. Has anyone ever seen such a feature on a carousel? Are they supposed to be some sort of 'fairy-tale castle steps' or something?
I like that brick built tiger figure on the carousel, hope the buyers enjoy this set.
^ Indeed, and if you look closely in the video you'll see that LEGO hasn't done a very good job of it either.
Oh man, looks amazing. Gotta have it. Nice to be surprised by a new set also, instead of knowing months and months in advance this is coming soon!
Super exited to get this but super disappointed there's no sound brick like the original.
Yeah, I also noted that even the makers of these sets have trouble aligning the stickers :D
The 1x2 tiles with tickets and 2x2 with story books are mentioned in the PR statement as decorated (should be printed).
Loooove it!!
Oh this looks lovely! Can't wait for it to join my mixer and Ferris wheel.
Wow, that's really nice! I hadn't expected to be interested in this, but I am...
^woosterlegos-- watch the video, it explains the steps.
Well, it isn't "grand" but the price per piece is just a fraction of a cent more than the Grand Carousel was 8 years ago. Like it's predecessor, prepare yourself for a bunch of repetitive building. I like the color scheme and despite my predicted feeble attempt to resist it, I'll probably grab one.
I like it better than the old caroussel set. The size, the colours.. Extremely well designed. I just wish lego would retire that old spongebob torso. It looks off next to the newer torsos.
Stan lee makes a cameo?!?
Thanks for your restraint in 'revealing' this, Huw. I know you're obliged to wait until it's okay'd by Lego to publish details on a new set, but it's just so much better to see full glossy shots of these things than a blurry watermarked thumbnail photo.
What a steal!
Is that a UCS Falcon hint in the first couple seconds?
£160 and it has stickers that even the professionals can't align, I think I will save my money and put it towards Assembly Square.
really beautiful!!!!
Gorgeous. This really shows the extent of the art which Lego is capable of producing.
Nah, I still prefer the good old 10196 Grand Carousel and I will also get it eventually once I've saved enough. And YES, it seems too large for some, but I don't mind. To me it's still better overall.
I don't like the exotic colors and bizarre animals of this carousel. It doesn't have the classic fairground atmosphere with it. The shrunken size just makes it feel like a chibi version of the older one. Something's just missing...
The 2009 one also had a nice sound brick AND the motor was included! :) Neither of them are here.
More realistic and coulorfull than the previous version. I love it
Elephants can't jump
Looks a little small but really nice. Those light blue details around the top are amazing.
I think I'll pass on Star Wars this weekend, and save up for this.
The rear of the elephant looks a bit clumsy, though.
is this the old Tie Advanced or a new version? Why would they show a model that is 11 years old in the intro?
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee236/hellomrzebra/TA_zpsrmoebayq.jpg
Although the inclusion of a sound brick and motor in the 'original' 10196 was most welcome I think this newer version looks nicer - lovely!
Another one, meh
Another hint in this video for the 'upcoming' millennium falcon....
It is coming
YEEEESSSS, thank you Lego for bringing back this wonderfull model in a redesigned Version. Great.
so what exactly is the Falcon hint?
^^^ the first scene in the intro - the "space slug" Exogorth chasing the small Falcon
The second scene hints on the new Minecraft D2C set.
Still both are just rumors ;)
Surely there was a way to incorporate a slot for people to stand? Even if it was just removing a 1X2 brick to put someone in? It looks weird having them basically stand on top of the animals. I love the set though, I might have to modify it some for them to sit in the animals. Most carousels have some sort of bench to sit in, so it makes sense for the swan to not be moving. Looking forward to this one!
I think the original looked a bit cooler. But still a great set. But don't think I will buy it.
^^^ to me that looked more like a Sperm Whale
Fantastic, of course, but... Where's the Saturn V?! :)
The original runs terrible and wears the tire in very little time. So happy this one has the motion driven through the center. I'll be getting one of these.
Beautiful set!
I know it's not a traditional fairy-tale animal, but a missed opportunity to introduce a molded zebra. For symmetry I would of instead placed the elephant on the platform opposite the swan and then substituting for it's vacated place the zebra could be incorporated as one of the moving animals. Of course that would require moving the steps behind on of the slimmer animals - maybe the flamingo.
And speaking of fairy-tales, from which would each of these animals belong? I'm thinking the swan from the Ugly Duckling, the frog from the Frog Prince, and the tiger from possibly How the Tiger Got His Stripes or maybe Little Back Sambo. Anyone got any ideas as to the flamingo and elephant?
This looks fantastic. However, I did love the sound brick from the original and the fact that it was powered like a real carousel with the tire against the side. That said, I think I can justify having both by saying this ride is for the younger kids due to the funky animals.
Suspect there are only 4 moving 'arms'. The swan and stairs appear to be opposite each other and I'm wondering if they sacrificed two moving arms for smooth running..?
It's a beautiful model, but looking at it doesn't "feel" like it's 3000 pieces and worth paying as much for as you would a modular building.
This set REALLY looks great! I bought the mixer but passed on the Ferris wheel because it didn't interest me, but this one does. I might get this one, but I can't say for sure yet because I need to see what the 300 dollar ninjago movie set will be. I'm really hoping it will be a city build and not just a vehicle or something.
Very beautiful
But as others have said....all those stickers and per the video looks like the professionals struggled with them as well.
Additionally not including the power functions is disappointing
@darkstonegrey:
Elephant: Colonel Hathi from Mowgli?
Flamingo: From Alice?
It's beautiful! I like the golden ticket.
^^^^^ How the elephant got his trunk - Rudyard Kipling 'Just-So Stories'. I think there may be one about flamingos as well, but can't find it now.
Dylan.farrow: My thoughts exactly. There must have been some issues with having 6 moving animals, because why not go all out? It's not stopping me from getting it though :) Perhaps a little time on the workbench to add in 2 more moving arms is on the horizon.
Don't know how I'm going to afford this, along w/the Ferris Wheel, as they complement eachother so well I don't see a proper amusement park w/o them both. The stickers do appear to be a repetitive nightmare, but the set looks simply gorgeous and I really missed out not getting the last one. As far as the last one the reviews I read mentioned that it was very flimsy, and this model looks to be a much more sturdy improvement. I wish it had a sound brick, and w/that price they could have thrown in power functions. Regardless, this will be a must have, and just in time for Father's Day!
this looks amazing! I must have it!
Very neat! I've started trying to build this on LDD and while I can't be totally sure in the absence of interior pics, based on the spacing and placement of some of the visible Technic connections I think this uses the quarter circle pieces from last year's Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator inside the rotating base.
Anyway, it seems to be a big improvement over the Grand Carousel, both in terms of looks (much more ornate detailing, fewer gaps, better looking animals) and stability (the video even demonstrates it being lifted without any issue).
Missed out on the previous large Grand Carousel set but now...gotta' get this. It's lovely!!!
With the steps if anyones confused it's explained in the video. Besides saying it's needed for the minifigs to get up onto the larger animals to ride, basically since it's a toy/playset it's another area for kids to display and explore with the minifigs. Kinda' becomes a fun play area.
In real life I've seen additional areas to walk up to to get onto certain rides. I noticed one in Rye Playland in New York.
This looks beautiful. I was going to spend during the May 4th offers but I think I will hold off for them. It has also got me interested in buying the mixer which was oop before I got back into the hobby. Real potential to setup a good looking fairground.
I love the animal builds some of the best brick built animals I have seen but I will agree it is odd the children standing on top of them hopefully they will be easy to modify. The steps don't bother me most carousels I've seen have them to either a second level of animals or a boarding level as here. Same too with the Swan being static which is usually for those for whom the up and down motion is too much!
It's a beautiful set and despite the sticker disappointment the colours really stand out and it should look good even without them. Cannot wait to get my hands on it :)
Love it! Day 1 purchase
Too bad this version has no sound brick, but got to have it !!!
Isnt it possible (editors) to put up some kind of a voting survey who likes more the previous version and who prefers this one? I should think this might be very interesting poll :)
to Reventon: So you suggest to stock pile Friends animals, right? :)
It's pretty great and a manual function is more interactive and lets children 'feel' the mechanism of the model.
I'm saving quite a bit of money lately with all the remakes. It'll give me time to catch up on the boxes of unbuilt sets in my garage.
As with the Ferris Wheel really disappointed in the lack of a sound brick - I just love that tune on the Grand Carousel. 'course it's still a must buy.. just don't know where to put it!
SO MUCH beautiful, beautiful medium blue!
I love it!
I really, really like this. It doesn't look like any part of this thing has not been done exactly the way it should have been. Fantastic. I even already have the Power Functions to install into it!
Hmm. Now for $200, I could buy this or the Snowspeeder, or a prior Modular building, or the Technic CLAAS tractor.... loads of different things.
Beautiful
Looking at it again, it looks like the vertical rows of studs in the centre should really be coverered by 1x1 trans yellow plates to finish it off. That'll be the first thing I do when I pick up a copy.
It needs six riding positions. The stairs is a cop-out.
It looks impressive, but I've gotta be honest that I'm a bit disappointed. After the Assault on Hoth debacle, Death Star remake, another Holiday Train (the year after the re-release winter toy shop), and another UCS Snowspeeder, it's getting kind of old to see so many things that we've already seen before in such a short period of time.
Couple of thoughts after "discovering" this upcoming model, having missed out on the original "Grand Carousel"..
Regarding color, I prefer the color scheming on the original Grand Carousel. The price is very reasonable considering LEGO could have easily priced it at $249.99 since it does contain 2600+ pieces.
On the other hand, I know everyone has their opinions about stickers, myself included. With most models, I typically never apply them but I have to agree with all others who have expressed disappointment at he quantity necessary on this model. I will likely replace all the 2x2 circle tiles and 2x4 rectangular tiles... I just cannot understand why LEGO took the easy/lame way out by not including pre-printed tiles... or just included gold colored tiles. Really, really, REALLY no excuses in that regard.
I'll certainly never pay out the money that the Grand Carousel commands (unless I win the lottery) and had even briefly considered an off brand copy but that idea was quickly dismissed as clones are despicable for so many reasons.
All told though, this will certainly be a must-purchase at some point this summer.
One last thought, I would have preferred another amusement park ride... something like a "Parachute Drop" ride that is shadowed in the background of the Ferris Wheel box... Ah well...
10196 looks much better
and without sound brick
bye
I love it. I really liked the ferris wheel but haven't purchased it as it is so large and I have such limited space. But this I will make space for. It looks gorgeous. I love the detail of the top part. I too hope it is possible to easily modify so that people can stand in the animals rather than on them as that does look so odd. I think it would be so much fun to mod this one; change out an animal every now and again. Sigh. I am madly trying to declutter everything else from my house so that I can clutter it up with more Lego.
Can I buy the trim separate?
Absolutely stunning. I love the details, I love the storybook theme, the colors are perfect and it's so much cleaner and visually pleasing than the last carousel. The hopping frog is fantastic. I guess I better start scraping off some shelf space...
Finally, this has been announced. Last year, youtuber Just2good mentioned rumors of this set and its finally here.
I love the color scheme and the carousel build looks awesome, especially the middle section. The fact that the animals move up and down really sells the model.
However, I hate the choice of these animals instead of horses. The swan looks great and is fine, I have seen real carousels with swans , but the others ruin the model. They all look like old Creator polybag builds. I don't know why Lego did not reuse the cool printed horses from the Winter Village carousel.
The minifigures are also a disgrace. There are City sets with more minifigures then this! The Fairground Mixer had 12 minifigures, the Ferris Wheel had 10 and this has 7?! I guess this means the next fairground set will have 5 minifigures...
Also, the minifigs themselves just look like someone got the parts from Fun in the Park and mixed them up a bit. There only appears to be one new face print, for the grandmother, but it probably is not new and the designer failed to point it out.
The new ticket and book prints are great, but so many stickers will turn a lot of AFOLs from purchasing this.
I will get this though. It definitely looks better then its predecessors. I think a lot of people, like me, will get this just because they need a carousel and its rather difficult to get any of the previous ones (which aren't as good anyway) and that the wait for yet another carousel will be a very very long one.
I hate to say this, but I was rather disappointed in the designer video. He did a great job with the model, but his presentation of it was rather poor. He did not 'sell the product' as effectively as some other designers have (Jamie does a great job at both the designing and selling factors. his passion for what he has created really shows in how he delivers).
I say this from a marketing point of view; as a business, you want to be able to convince people to buy the product and a good business manager would choose someone who makes people interested about the product, even if they had not had the intention of buying it in the first place. Had the animals not moved up and down, and had I not needed a Lego carousel so badly, I would not have considered buying this. The designer did not persuade me to consider it.
Am I the only one who finds it weird that you reuploaded the official video from the official LEGO channel to your own?
Design by Classic‘s designer?
No power functions tho
90 comments and 90 likes!! it will be a hit, no doubt.
Stickers.
Not a day 1 purchase, but I will get it at some "discount sale" point. As others have mentioned the polybag animals make it a bit weird for me. Swan yes, elephant no, maybe that decision was signed off in the bar, after a few rounds.
It's not on par with the Grand Carousel, but every good fairground needs two different Carousel's.
I really like this one. Could never understand why the original "Grand" carousel was so expensive on the aftermarket. Garish colours, not really what carousels over here looked like, and a very "bloated" look to it. This new one seems almost perfect. Looks extremely like the carousel we get at our local fair every year, the animals are really nice, and the colour scheme is also far more realistic to what actual carousels look like.
Don't mind the stickers on this so much. And has Lego ever printed mirrored pieces anyway, ever?
And the best thing: judging by the Ferris Wheel, this will also someday be available at Kaufhof, meaning that during their frequent sales, this will cost around 140 Euro or even less, which is a steal imho.
I would rather have horses like on the Winter Market - so that will be it's fate - horses!
I agree with Brickchap - the Animals do look like old creator polybag animals and a bit too cartoonish. I'd be happier at £20 less, but all that said I really like it and think the evolution of the overall design very well executed.
My local zoo has a carousel that features not only all the animals seen on this model, but many other atypical types (a caterpillar, snake, toucan, camel, alligator, and more), so all the complaints about the animals here ring hollow for me.
Love this set!
They remind me of Mixels... R.I.P.
Too many 'must have' sets, and this one just made the list. It is beautiful.
Beautiful and in terms of driving mechanism it seems a big improvement over 10196!
Having built some of these myself there are a few fundamental problems with using LEGO. The first is that you can't simply poke a shaft through a LEGO horse. And if the shaft isn't an axle, and the animal is clipped to it, how do you stop it twisting? Here they seem to have adressed that with tea-stirrers. The technic wheel-mounts in the floor to act as sockets for the lower part of each pole are a clever touch.
Even then with a pole through your creature, it's hard to make space for a minifig to sit. Disappointed that here they don't even seem to have tried. It would have been cool to fit minifig horse harnesses to some of the brick-built animals, but they're not quite fit for that without a few subtle changes.
Now with four animals moving it's easy to offset each by a quarter turn, to balance up the forces involved (although having an elephant doesn't help!).
Carousels often do have a variety of creatures, including non-moving carriages with more accessible bench seats. And ones this big may well have a scond level - there's a huge one that appears regularly in Milton Keynes at Christmas with stairs up to an upper deck. Though typically there's another level of ride-on features up there.
Overall though this is a big improvement over the last one, both visually and technically. And giving you the pegs to just plug on a motor directly is brilliant, since it makes PF an option instead of a cost penalty.
Trying to work out if this one uses a properly geared concentric drive, e.g. a technic turntable or the new giant ring gear, to turn the main part of the carousel. Instead of some daft rubber-tyre propulsion. It certainly seems to move smoothly enough when the crank is turned.
The central pedestal remains still, so presumably there's some static gear in there from which the animal cranks are driven.
@joefish: That's the first time I've heard that piece referred to as a "tea-stirrer". XD I kind of like that term for it.
Wow, I am very impressed! Love everything about it: the fairy-tale theme, the imaginative, cute animals, the gorgeous color-scheme and detailing, the fabric canopy, the solid base, and the functionality is awesome! Everything but the stickers... This is going to go great with the ferris wheel.
This definitely is an improvement from the original. I had to modify the original to make it look more appealing. This has a lot of great features. It also looks like it moves a lot smoother. The original was horrible. I don't know how LEGO released it thinking it worked well enough. Maybe there were a lot more limitations 8 years ago. But this is much better in those terms. I did build the original within the last few months, so I may consider reworking it to make it function more smoothly, although it might end up being easier just to buy this.
I showed my wife and daughter, who I thought would have been more excited, but they didn't seem too interested in it oddly enough. Oh well. I have other priorities anyway, but this will be on the list for an eventual purchase. I missed out on the Mixer sale on amazon, so hopefully this goes on sale sometime too.
This looks fantastic, but I don't know that I can justify the purchase without selling off the Grand Carousel. Not sure I want to do that.
No music brick? :( sad. No power function included? :( sad.
I've been hoping Lego would bring out a new Carousel, since I missed out on purchasing the original 10196, so if a new one was released it was going to be different.
I still love the colours used in the original but have to say they have still done an amazing job of bring out a new one and will be more than happy to purchase to add to the rest of my amusement ride sets. Really happy Lego have done this, it feels like they have been listening to their fans.
Thank you
Wow. This is so much better than the old one. It would go perfectly with the ferris wheel or fairground mixer.
Gorgeous. And the stairs look as if they'll rotate with the center section, so people can stand on that center section and spin with the kids. I forget if I've seen that on real carousels before.
This set looks great hope they bring the carousel sound brick out to go with it thou
This carousel is absolutely adorable, and I must have it!
Has there been any confirmation of VIP early access on this set? @Huw
VIP early access is available now (at least on the UK LEGO.com website)!
This set is very lovely. That's a pity the missing of power functions and sound brick included. Unfortunately it's too big for my amusement park. The carousel seems too big for minifigures dimensions. I would have prefered a new ride, for example a rollercoaster.
