40256 Create The World came out of the blue a week or so ago when it was discovered in branches of Sainsbury's in the UK.

It's been released to tie in with a trading card promotion that commences tomorrow. BricksFans published all the details a few days ago. The cards will be given away with purchases and can also be bought for 50p for a pack. There's 140 to collect which can be mounted in a collectors' album.

Anyway, let's take a look at the important part of the promo, the ABS...

Minifigures

The two minifigures are apparently exclusive to this set and are named Lily and Sam. Both are excellent generic figures that'll be at home in any City scenario.

Sam's torso first appeared in last year's 60134 Fun in the Park - City People Pack, while Lily's was first used in 10247 Ferris Wheel.

The heads are also fairly new and both have alternative expressions. I do like Lily's shut-eyed dreamy face!

They are equipped with everything needed for a trip: map, suitcase, camera and mobile phone.

Car

The set builds three models. None of them use all the parts, as is usual in 3-in-1 sets. The car has a very old-school Town vibe to it, with the old-style mudguards. In many ways it's better than most of today's cars which tend to be far too big.

Despite its diminutive size both figures can fit in it.

Boat

This is perhaps the weakest of the three models but I guess it's perfectly serviceable as a speedboat.

Once again, Lily and Sam can fit in it and life-jackets are provided for both.

Helicopter

This is not a bad effort I suppose but the rotor blades look terrible in my opinion.

Lily's the one with the pilot's license, it seems, so she takes the controls of this vehicle.

Overall

I probably wouldn't have given this set a second glance had it been part of the normal retail selection of City/Creator sets but given its exclusivity and future collectability, I couldn't resist.

None of the builds are spectacular: they are all a bit old-school but, actually, that's part of their charm.

At £8 for two great minifigs and a hundred or so pieces, it's pretty good value.

Although it's a 3-in-1 set, so the models can't be built simultaneously, the parts are common enough so I was able to build all three at once using spares from my collection.

The set, cards and collector's album can be purchased in-store and from the Sainsbury's website.

I have no idea if it'll be available elsewhere in the world but I'd be surprised if it was produced only for Sainsbury's so maybe it'll crop up in supermarkets in other countries later in the year.

However this looks a great little set

Given the look of the album, the trading cards look more like stickers. Still, just in time for cmf 17.

By in United Kingdom,

The Create the World campaign is exclusive to Sainsbury's (the packs of cards and the albums are Sainsbury's branded) so I would say the chance of the set turning up anywhere else - in the UK at least - is pretty much zero.

By in Puerto Rico,

Looks cool, probably won't miss not buying the set but the car build has me surprised.

Sold. I've got two sainsbury's shops in the vicinity, so I'll pick one up for the figures and the car.

By in United States,

The rotors do indeed look terrible and so do the life jackets. Otherwise, looks like a neat set!

Looks pretty good. I wish the chopper cockpit was a little better engineered but other than that it looks great for a really good value.

By in United Kingdom,

As a Sainsbury's shopper was disappointed my local London store had none of these yesterday. No sign of the free stickers/cards either when I paid for the weekly shop, when I asked staff had no clue about the offer. Will defiantly pick the set up if I see it (might wait a bit to see if it goes on sale, Sainsbury's Lego prices seem to go up and down like a yoyo) as it will make a nice addition to add life to my Creator midi modular street.

@Arpie the promo starts tomorrow, anything people have seen already has been put out early in error.

@toythatkills - that's good to know! I checked Kew and Hampton stores this weekend and came away empty handed. I'll give it a few days and go pick up a couple if they manage to get stock. Both those stores have rubbish Lego sections, so I'm not holding out too much hope :-O

I'm going to try Holywood Exchange and Bangor (Northern Ireland) at the weekend. Looking forward to getting my hands on one.

By in Finland,

Why does it look like a 2007 set?

By in United Kingdom,

By in United Kingdom,

I managed to pick mine up at Sainsbury's Nine Elms and the sticker book was being advertised on top of the self service checkouts in the sainsbury's local on Rochester Row. It starts Wed. I love the set and it will go nicely with the passport set that is out in June as seen in the American version of the calendar.

By in United States,

I love the old school charm--been a while since we've seen 4-wide cars! Not that I'd go back, I love the 6-wide designs, but this defiinitely hits the nostalgia buttons!

Angling that standard helicopter canopy piece back so far and using the long taper in the cockpit below gives it almost an AH-1 Cobra aggressiveness, reminding me of the old game Choplifter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choplifter/media/File:Choplifter.png (even though that game's hero craft was supposed to be a Bell 2xx). Inspires me to experiment. Thanks for sharing these pics!

By in United Kingdom,

Lovely wee old-school set! Agree that the rotor blades could've been better, but overall I love the look of these. Definitely a set I would buy for a young kid getting into Lego, because it just looks like it'd be really good for encouraging the sort of constant dismantling and rebuilding I enjoyed so much at that age - you really get to know the potential of the pieces that way...

Also, I may have to pick this up for myself both for the nostalgia value and because that closed-eyes face for Lily is so great!

By in Australia,

The helicopter doesn't wow me (and usually Lego helicopters are my bag), but I love that little red car so much. I much prefer the 4-wide vehicles, particularly cars, so I'm definitely gonna keep my eye out for this one.

After how they treated Bristol Rovers I won't shop in there anymore, so I doubt that I will get this set unless it is in a brand store. However, I am not that bothered as it looks like a step back to me.

That set listed at £19.99 has sold! The same seller has one listed now for£21.99. Are people really willing to pay that much?!
It's nice, but I don't see what's so special about it...

By in United States,

I love the facial prints, are those exclusive or do they/will they appear in other sets?

By in United Kingdom,

Got two copies of the set yesterday, but the cards and album weren't released until today. popped back in to get a third set (present for a friends son) and got the album for £2, lovely lady at the till gave me three packs of cards as well.

By in United Kingdom,

I've just spotted that we can like comments now too :-)
Anyway, I was just in my Sainsbury's Local by coincidence and they had the sticker book, but no sets. So the promotion has made it as far a leafy West London. I'll have to try the "big" shop at some point.

By in United Kingdom,

Same as above, all the cards but no set, at my store. (Lancaster)

By in Canada,

This set is nothing special, but I like the look of the car. It's a reasonable size, it fits more than one minifigure, and it doesn't really have any single use pieces.
