The official end of LEGO Dimensions

Posted by ,

Rumours surrounding the future of LEGO Dimensions have been swirling for several months. It has now been officially confirmed that no further packs will be released via a statement published on LEGO Dimensions' Twitter feed.

Fortunately, the statement also confirms that the servers will continue to support the video game and that existing packs will remain available. This will undoubtedly disappoint many fans but is not surprising given the waning popularity of toys-to-life games and the apparent poor sales of recent LEGO Dimensions packs.

Will you miss LEGO Dimensions and what future forays do you think LEGO should make into the digital world, if any? Let us know in the comments.

It was fun while it lasted. I can’t wait to get the remaining packs I want on discount!

By in United States,

Still have plenty of levels left to play in the game, so I'm good. Glad we've finally gotten the official confirmation, everybody obsessing over the leaks was annoying.

By in United States,

I ended up selling everything i have for the game. I was excited for it and would have loved to continue playing it . . . But it was so buggy and co-op performance wasn't very good on the Wii U. I easily would have kept it and supported the game more by buying more packs if I wasn't dealing with so many technical issues.

By in United States,

Should have been available on the PC. Huge missed market

By in United States,

Since the show Adventure Time is on the way out and likely won't be resurrected in LEGO form other than the IDEAS set and the handful of dimensions sets, I'm happy to have at least gotten the minifigs from it. Would have liked to see Princess Bubblegum and a Banana Guard though

By in United States,

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I would have bought it if it was available for PC. I'm not one to but sets just for the minifigs, so seeing as I had no way of playing the game, I did not buy any Dimensions sets. Still sad to see it go.

By in United States,

Very upset about no Y3 and lost opportunities for Disney/Marvel/Star Wars. Looking forward to picking up discounted duplicate packs, and selling off some of my extra packs

Gravatar
By in United States,

I won't miss it to much.

By in Germany,

They should have produced the cool eighties figures as standalone packs and forgo the game itself. I am nevertheless thankful for Dr. Who & some other childhood heros. Never played the game. :D

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Anyway, the majority bought it for the figures, not for the game.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good! Maybe now they'll bring back the Lord of the Rings line!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Why not post a Poll about this. I too am one who didn't play because it wasn't available on PC as well as only buying sets for the minifigures. I don't like seeing Lego fail but it would be interesting to see if Dimensions ever made money over its lifetime.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m sad we won’t be getting a Lord Vortech

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My kids will miss it, esprcially my son. I like the minifigures too :-(

Gravatar
By in United States,

I bought a few of the packs for the figures but I never played the game because I don't have a console. As long as the licenses work out, Lego worlds could be a good vehicle for a multiple license game by offering DLC content. They already have a classic space DLC, and another in the works.

By in Puerto Rico,

And no Sauron pack.

By in United States,

It will still take 2 plus years for them to drop off the Amazon sales page.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Whatever foray into gaming Lego make they have to be there in the first wave of the action.

Taking 2 years to get Dimensions to the market was never going to work, after Skylanders flooded the market.

Stick to minifigs in the first wave. But most importantly keep the RRP prices down.

If the game succeeds, then either produce game sets with bricks in the second wave, or just produce Lego sets that tie into the game theme. But keep the low RRP's.

Volume sales is always the right way for computer games.
High priced RRPs is always wrong for computer games.

As other people have said, PC versions of the game are also required.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope they keep making similar minifig packs though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So much for waiting for a PC version.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I coudn't care less. Lego should stick to what they are good at - building Lego sets. It's crap like this that got them into trouble before.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to say that I rather did enjoy the game when it first came out. I purchased it day one and really appreciated the interesting "worlds-colliding" idea it incorporated. I will forever remember the rage caused by not owning an Aquaman minifigure to use the Atlantis pools and get 100%!

I am also grateful for all of the interesting minifigures we got from the line, as many other people have previously stated. I never thought I would have gotten a Chell minifigure in my entire life, along with Doctor Who, Cyberman, or Newt Scamander. It really did provide a great resource for fans of all genres.

However, I did eventually stop playing the game, as I found the constant switching between character tiles to be very awkward, and the keystone powers became quite repetitive. I believe the final nail in the coffin for me was when I had finished the Fantastic Beasts story mode, and a game update unfortunately erased all of the progress from it. :(

All gripes with the game's technical issues aside, I am proud of LEGO for taking a big risk jumping into this realm of interactive play. Say what you will, something for most everyone came out of this endeavor, whether through its minifigure range, its gameplay, or its colorful choice of parts. I hope their next big venture can be even more successful and long-lasting than this!

Rest in Pieces, LEGO Dimensions

By in United States,

I am sad to see it go. Perfect it was not but the idea was nifty. I think they got too ambitious for Round 2 though. Sometimes simple is best. I'll try to get the few remaining packs we want and hopefully the three expansions packs on closeout.

@Brickmatt I sent you a message/email about your unused game discs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's kinda too bad. There was so many different packs they could've made.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I will miss it. Thank you Lego for producing something very dear to my heart and bringing me hours of fun. Not to mention some fantastic figures along the way. Thank you.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'll miss getting any more updates and packs - I had many days worth of fun playing it on my PS3, & subsequently on my PS4. I am near 100% completion, needing to complete the Beetlejuice adventure world, and tackle a load of really hard Sonic races.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad they were around. Got the chance to get unique figs and mini-builds that wouldn't normally be made or even in sets.
The next foray for Lego should be virtual reality building.

Gravatar
By in United States,

RIP LEGO Dimensions. This was a really cool idea that I don't think was capitalized on well. The first year was great, simple, nothing crazy, with themes little kids could easily identify. I think the problem came with year 2 and the obscure themes introduced, I don't know any little kids who even know Knight Rider existed. Kids not being able to recognize characters is probably why year 2 did so bad. With the topic of year 3, I'm not entirely sure we would have gotten what we all wanted. In terms of Star Wars we probably would have gotten characters from the Sequel Trilogy as it's more recent and that's what Disney wants to push. For Marvel we probably would have gotten characters from Avengers Assemble and whatever garbage Spider-Man cartoon is on now. As for Disney no clue, but I doubt we would have gotten any Movie based characters for Marvel and I don't see them adding Original Trilogy or Prequel Trilogy, at least not at first.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They should release Lord Vortech at the end of the year as a final "thank you".
Still sad to see this game go so soon :(

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I felt the game lacked rewards. In other LEGO games, you completed a level and unlocked more characters. This game gave you nothing but access to the next level (and not even that if we talk about level packs). No reward meant less desire to continue playing to completion.
As others have mentioned, glitches, cost, large downloads, and questionable licence choices were outweighing the pros of the game.
I think they also missed a trick in not giving you building incentives to owning more product. A few combined builds(like the Mixels max models) would have been welcome.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I wouldn't say I'm disappointed it's ended, but disappointed it didn't get better.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I've always loved LEGO games but this game's major failure was its lack of support for PC (or Mac). Every other TT Games LEGO game has been put on both platforms, but not Dimensions for some reason. I simply didn't own any of the consoles it worked on. Had I, a suspect a lot of my money would have gone toward this game, both for the figures and for the gameplay aspects. But since they didn't support PC (or Mac), I only ended up buying a single set as a gift. That's it. I honestly don't think this toys-to-life game would not have failed had they supported PCs, kept prices a tad lower, and supported the game itself more. I mean, how many times has Skylanders been released now? LEGO Dimensions should have had a sequel by now.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

as said many times. its sad that its over. but at least one theme that wasnt contaminated with the star wars desease ;P ....but wouldnt havent had happend anyways( same with marvel) no need for disney for more toy to life lines. rip lego dimensions. maybe we will meet in an other reality again.

By in United Kingdom,

Die hard game players like myself will be wanting to know whether there is 'hire a hero' support likely in the near future for the Powerpuff Girls / Teen Titans / Beetlejuice release. I believe someone mentioned before that you can now make constructs with one of the new characters which is handy. I need to get the more recent Dimensions packs on discount.

My tactic throughout has generally been to only buy one character from any given franchise, plus any unique characters that seemed bound to be collectable in the future, like Stay Puft. This kept costs down (slightly) whilst also allowing me access to all the hub worlds in the game. Still need Goonies, Knight Rider and the other licenses I mentioned above though.

Gravatar
By in Japan,

I have never even seen these sold. I guess they were never popular where I live.
I do see the lack of appeal for around here though, not sure about other places.
I hope LEGO comes back stronger with something more universally appealing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've collected a lot of figures (at discounts online or in swaps) and my girlfriend and I still have a ton of fun with the game. It's been great for us each being able to play as our favorites, with me favoring Marty McFly, Doctor Who characters, and Chell from Portal 2, while she prefers playing as Legolas, Unikitty, and the Gremlins. This has led to hours of ridiculous fun for us both. While I'm sad to see the game fading, I can honestly say that it will always remain my favorite Lego game and that we'll likely still be playing it for years to come together. We can even use it with our kids (when that time comes) to introduce them to various characters and use that to sneakily get them interested in classic movies like Back to the Future and even cartoons we grew up on like the original Teen Titans (we don't have to expose them to TT Go lol).

By in Netherlands,

I am a video gamer (and lego fan, obviously) and I found the starter pack, but especially the other packs too expensive (when comparing to regular Lego, or other video games). It also annoyed me that the starter packs for the better consoles were more expensive.

I did buy a starter pack, quite a few level/story packs, and fun packs of franchises I like, or who's abilities I needed, once they went on discount.

In the end, I think I spend EUR 200+ on this, but I did not get as much game content as, say , Horizon Zero Dawn. And not EUR 140 in Lego either.

The starter pack, with the lego, dock and levels are fun and worth the money, even at full price. (But you are left with a nagging feeling of all the things you could have done, if you had the right figures).

As for the lego, some of the vehicles + alt builds are really well designed, like KITT, the MI car, the Ghostbusters car, both Sonic vehicles. I am really happy I have Michael Knight, Chell, BA Baracus, Sonic, and Dr. Who figures. Lumpy princess cracks me up in the game every time.

Some of the levels are a real labour of love, especially the Dr. Who, but also Sonic, Portal, MI. Others are way too short, like Back to the Future, or Midway Arcade.

It's a real shame that the story packs do not involve /interact with the portal build the way the main game does. I expected the 'elevators' of the Fantastic beasts pack to 'mean' something, but no.

The adventure worlds are boring. They have the occasional good quest and some good nods to the franchise. There rarely is much to do for the specific character you use to access it, and A LOT that needs other characters. The year two franchise worlds are a little better, with links to other areas. The Dr. Who is the only one I remember for having good voice acting. The Sonic one is pretty good. I really hate it you cannot instantly start again at the start of a race if you fail.

A real missed opportunity: Unlocking building instructions of stuff you see in-game. And cross-pack mashups.

That said, I would buy a closing 'lord voltron' story pack. I'd would love to have that figure.

By in United Kingdom,

I want a Lego toys to life game but rather than buy dimensions specific any sets work with the game. Also it would be awesome if you could take your game to the Lego and they then give you mini figures you unlocked in game as real mini figures. However that seems far fetched. Shame to see dimensions go though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

sad they didn't make a sauron minifigure, but I'll take what I can get

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Well, so much for a 3 year promise! I think Tt should have produced a final wave 10 on green or purple plates and made an announcement proclaiming it to be the grand finale. Launch it for E3 2018 with a few fun packs only and a lord vortech bonus level that answers the cliffhanger end.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lack of a PC version killed any interest in this household. I'm hoping that TT do a coda release ala Disney Infinity, where it's just the game minus the toys aspect - keep the packs as DLC perhaps, but there's no guarantee of that. Like others have said, the brands/themes chosen felt quirky, but ultimately limited in reach year two, and I can't see how that helped them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope the servers continue to support the game for a long time, because we plan on wiping off the dust of our Dimensions every once and awhile (again, more often when baby brother no longer considers the little LEGO bits to be tiny tasty chew toys aka choking hazards). Does anyone know if one could download the latest update (like downloaded directly onto your own console) and play forever w/o worry of servers going off-line? As an unrelated tangent I really want to buy the Ghostbusters Story pack (it's 50% off on LEGO LEGO.com now) just for the Asian store-front pieces!

By in Brazil,

I never got really interested in Dimension for a couple of motives, like the fact that I never seen a set of it in Brazil and due to the sets high prices, but I always found pretty annoying the fact that Lego invested on some movie and TV series franchises that looked simply ridiculous because they are barely relevant for younger audiences.

The A-Team? Mission: Impossible? Knight Rider?? Bettlejuice??? Man, I always thought that it would be better for Dimensions that Lego choose more modern TV and video game franchises and others that have greater appeal nowdays, like they did with PPG, Teen Titans and Sonic. Instead, it looked more that Lego would do a Highlander, MacGyver or Three Men and a Baby packs if the game continued.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Only just started playing this so in some ways I'm okay with it ending as I now know how many packs I have left to buy to be complete but it's a shame that more of the story packs weren't made as I think it would have been a good way to make use of the toy pad and get content that we wouldn't have got as stand alone games.
I am also glad that I'm late to the party because there is no way I would have brought all the packs for it at full price. It was far too expensive for the additional content at retail price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was fun. It's a shame we never got Steven Universe packs or some updated BIONICLE minifigures, but it's still a nice collection of rareities and a decently fun game.

I think LEGO Should now move their attention to LEGO Worlds. The game is already huge, but there's so much it's missing the company could add! (More themes, more biomes, and of course some sort of checklist)

If I was in charge of LW I would produce a free DLC for each theme containing 2-4 characters and a vehicle for each, and a pay-to-play DLC for all the other characters and builds from the theme. That way you could give people a taste of the universe they'd be getting into, and those who wish can delve right in. They wouldn't come out at the same time (obviously!) but it would be a fun way to keep things alive.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not to be a downer, but "Ding Dong the Witch is dead."

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like many have said, Lego Dimensions would have survived if they had made newer and more modern characters. Kids don't know what a lot of these themes are. If I were in charge, and I saw sales dropping, I would make themes like Disney and Star wars.

I'm not saying they should have done away with older themes, I loved the Back to the Future one! I just think they should have limited it to only a few 80's themes and kept it mostly themes like:

Pirates of the Caribbean (Level Pack with Jack Sparrow)
Super Mario Bros. (Team pack with Mario and Luigi)
Star Wars (Possibilities are endless there!)
Disney (Mickey, Stitch, Donald...Etc.)
And maybe even Pokémon or something popular like that.

But I think this game had a good run. It will still be fun to get the discount packs now!

Gravatar
By in United States,

^There are some issues with the Super Mario and Pokemon both are to different block companies though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know.
I was just pointing out a few random ideas : )

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have an 8- and a 10-year old. They love LEGO. They love video games. They did not love the Dimensions game, though. They got most of Wave 1 for Christmas... 2015 (sorry, had to go look up and see how long ago this came out!) and a few fun packs after that, but the interest waned very quickly. As a child of the 80s, I loved the BttF, A-Team, Knight Rider, and other related releases. But I think it was a bad move to start releasing the 'story packs' at an rrp of $49.99 USD. Having skipped over a bunch of sets up until then, I saw that as "Really? I don't think these are selling that well and they want you to spend $50 more?" (No comment on the Ghostbusters reboot...)

Anyway, I'll pick up some of the others when they start clearing out.

Just like I did with Disney Infinity where I picked up the rest of the figures we wanted for $3.
