Review: 30478 Jolly Santa

Christmas polybags are becoming a regular fixture in LEGO's portfolio. This year's offering is 30478 Jolly Santa.

It's cropped up in a few shops in various places and was available as part of a promotion at shop.LEGO.com but the easiest way to get hold of it if you can't get it locally is on the secondary market. BrickLink seller BergensBricks is currently offering it for about £4.50 / $6.

Let's see if it's worth tracking down...

For a polybag it's quite a substantial build. Its 74 pieces, mostly bricks, plates and slopes, combine to build Santa Claus, who stands 8cm/3" high, his sack, and three gifts.

His beard, belly and hat have been captured perfectly and, unlike last year's seasonal set 40206 Santa, is unlikely to scare little children.

The sack is attached to his back with a clip which allows it to be removed easily. There is no opening in which to insert the gifts, unfortunately, but that would of course increase its size considerably.

It's delightful little set that would make an ideal stocking filler, and is of course an essential purchase for collectors of polybags.

Speaking of which, in the article about collecting them that I published in the summer, I mentioned that I needed 30036 Buggy Racer. Shortly afterwards Martin in the Czech Republic contacted me and offered me one, so apart from the last couple of 2017 ones I need to track down, my collection of 30xxx polybags is now complete. Thanks Martin!

Thanks to Cédric for sending me this set to review.

By in United States,

Grabbed one of these yesterday at our local Target. My kid wants the Minecraft Crafting Box ($12 off this week) for Christmas, and "Jolly Santa" was free with a Lego purchase of more than $30. No one at Target could figure out what "Jolly Santa" was, so they gave me this polybag.

@mcjaco: It's funny that Target didn't know what "Jolly Santa" was. When I bought mine from Toys R Us the receipt shows it as Jolly Santa. I thought to myself that it was a cool set name.

I got mine from a local facebook group, but from BergensBrick. Nice guy and always doing a good service on bricklink orders.

@Joefish and Huw, I know what I'll be putting in my turkey in a few days. ;-)

Cute set!

I gotta say I'm not a big fan of the no-nose and no-mouth approach. But it's a cute set nonetheless.

40206 might be a bit ugly up close, but from a distance it actually looks pretty good.
