The next Ideas set is...
Posted by TheBrickPal,
The results of the first 2017 Ideas review have been revealed on Twitter and the Ideas blog.
Find out after the break which project has been selected and let us know what you think of it in the comments.
From the Ideas Blog:
Congratulations to BrickBros UK for their inspired design, which will officially become one of the next LEGO Ideas sets!
We can't wait to see Tom and Drew's Tron Legacy Light Cycle come to life in LEGO bricks.
If you'd like to learn more about Tom & Drew then make sure to check out their 10K Club Interview.
Here's what didn't make it:

Unfortunately not a surprise, given that this was leaked a few days ago. Sad that Ideas winners are getting leaked now. As for the model, I doubt I'll get it. We'll see what the final version looks like though.
Shame about the watermill not making it. I'd absolutely have bought that.
GG brick bros uk
Looks like it will make for a cool little display piece, and I'll pick it up if it's not overpriced. I'm a bit confused though, I thought they'd put an end to licensed submissions?
PS. Thanks for the licensing clarification guys :) I wish that Rubicon would've come to fruition, I still miss my Jeep terribly and would have had to buy that. The Blues Mobile and Classic Arcade Machines would have been very cool as well, although a bit too large for minifigure scale. The Venetian Houses and Medieval Watermill are both beautiful but would have come w/too large price tags. Two cents dropped.
^ Ones based on current licenses that LEGO already has, only.
@LegoSolo77 I believe the only licensed submissions that aren't allowed are for themes that are currently licensed by lego.
Not overly excited about this one - will probably not purchase it. Loved the original movie, though.
I have followed their page on and off. Congrats to them for getting a set passed.
I like it. Actually Tron as a series would translate to LEGO quite well. (but it's not popular enough).
Not bad, I'd be interested, but not in it's current form. If it's just this, it'll be too small. I hope they slap the Rinzler bike next to it, or spice it up a little bit with something else.
Think I'll buy it :)
Meh. Was hoping for the Blues Mobile.
So much on that list that I'd have easily gone and bought, and yet they've gone for one of the few that I'm not remotely interested in. Another smaller set, though - maybe they're waiting for the likes of Saturn V and the Old Fishing Store to finish their runs before selecting another bigger project?
Tron Legacy, yes! One of my favourite movies, but nooo! Quest builder looked awesome and so did the Medieval Watermill!
I am okay with the results. I was really hoping for Quest builder but sadly it didn’t make it. Fantasy and Lego, nothing can go wrong...
Oh... I just noticed that the set was made by BrickBros Uk, congrats guys! I watch them on YouTube!
Really disappointed that the Red Arrows Hawk didn't make it. What a great model and designed by current Red Arrows to boot. Shame.
Yes!
YEEESSSS!! I was so hoping for this! TRON Legacy is so awesome that it was unthinkable to not get a set from it!!
I completely forgot that IDEAS was still a thing, so this post caught me off guard.
Either way, the cycle has potential, but I doubt I will pick it up unless it is super cheap. Or I can wait for Amazon to discount it like it has all the others.
I can't say I thought this was going to win, but I can't say any of the others had a good shot either. MMPR could have been neat, but with Voltron releasing I am guessing it would be too similar. And the watermill is too much of a MOC to be a set.
I do hope they severely modify the minifig though.
There were surely better Ideas to select than this one... LEGO can simply remake Ultra Agents set 70167 and hey presto, done!
Not really that surprising. Blues Brothers is probably a bit too adult for the Lego's tastes (though I still can't believe they made Big Bang Theory). The arcade machines are cool but have very limited use. Surf Rescue and the Office were both a bit vague and didn't really have great propositions. Basically that leaves a bunch of large, expensive models. I'd thought the Red Arrows Hawk had the best chance and I'd thought the Tron Cycle might be too niche, but i still don't find the results surprising.
Meh. Although it looks nice (congrats to Brick Bros UK), it's not really a set I'd be dying to get at full price. As someone said earlier, it does translate well into Lego form but it's just not that popular given the latest Tron was released 7 years ago. I think it helped that LEGO has a close relationship with Disney to make licensing it easier.
I know they have a good relationship with Disney, but Tron is a completely dead franchise. So all they are making is a redone Ultra Agents bike.
It’s a shame about Blues Brothers and the arcade games, but congratulations to BrickBros UK.
@David1985 There must still be some life left in the franchise with Disney planning to build the Tron Lightcycle Power Run rollercoaster in WDW in the next 2-3 years.
Bummer! No go.
OMG! I absolutely LOVE Tron! I hope they tweak it a bit and offer an opponent as well.
Bought. Love Tron, and any way I can support the franchise, I will. Hopefully there's still some life left in it.
Never heard of it so thankfully one I can pass on!!
Boo... Blues Brothers... Boo...
Tron fan since the very first one was released into theaters when I was 7yo. Don't know if I'll buy this set though
Shame about the Arcade Games.
This just doesn't interest me at all. At least if you're doing TRON, do the original. TRON Legacy was no more suited to kids than The Blues Brothers.
Even less inspiring is the next set of 10,000s - I can't see any of those being made into sets.
What about the Lego S.T.A.R. Labs ? Is that ever going to be a set?
YES! I'm thinking I might wind up with a copy...
Tron is pretty, "meh". I would have liked Venice. And that roleplaying one may have had good castle parts.
I built something very similar from a rebrickable free moc last year... Still this does look more involved and with a stand.
@Joefish Why do the original, I mean that movie was fine and all but Legacy was amazing, Why was it not more suitable to kids than The Blues Brothers. I know that some programs exploded into pixels, but keep in mind that Tron Legacy is pg-13 and the blues brothers is R rated. Just sayin
Agreed, shame that Quest Builder didn't make it! As mentioned above, the set may end up very reminiscent of Ultra Agents.
I'm interested. Hopefully the price is fair.
Oh my gosh, YES!!! I'm getting that no matter the cost.
Sorry but I think I’ll pass on this one. For me it’s possibly the least appealing of all those being considered and the least exciting announcement from this range. The Red Arrow would have been a must buy but at least now I get to avoid a big spend??
Not a great lot this round, but the Tron cycle and the Bluesmobile would have been my top picks, so well done. But even the winners seem a bit too niche this round.
I too was very much hoping for the BLUESMOBILE. That would have been so sweet.
Oh Well! Have to build my own,....
As to Tron...wait and see. An opponent would definitely seal the deal.
@David1985: No more of a dead franchise than Back to the Future, Yellow Submarine, or WALL-E… I think LEGO has seen enough to know that the nostalgia market can support an Ideas set, particularly one like this that will probably have a fairly low price point. It may resemble an Ultra Agents vehicle, but I'm sure there are plenty of nostalgic adults who have never heard of LEGO Ultra Agents, but will read about this set on Facebook or someplace and want it specifically because it's a TRON light cycle.
In general, I think people need to remember that the Ideas platform isn't about choosing the best MOC, it's about choosing ones that would make viable sets. And sometimes that means something simple will have an advantage over something more elaborate but less iconic.
I’m quite relieved. My credit card couldn’t have taken much more!
@Aanchir very true!
Yes!!!!!, let's hope for a 25-30 USD set
I wanted the Jeep. Maybe LEGO will be making a Creator Expert model next year.
I would have liked to see the Arcade Games get through and I thought the Red Arrows had a really solid support base.
These six sets are still in review:
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/discoversearch/f:projectStateFilter=in_review/s:most_recent&scroll=200
I’m still waiting for a chance to buy the two NASA sets...so I’m just glad that there wasn’t anything in this round that would be too difficult to acquire!
Mmh, it's certainly one of those I'm rather less interested in. We'll see how it looks like in the end, and what the price point will be. The arcade machines would have been really cool, and the Jeep an instant buy...
It seems I'm one of the very few excited for this! I love TRON and TRON: Legacy, and the light cycles are very cool.
Oh, for brick's sake... another licensed product? I thought the ideas program was supposed to encourage innovation, not imitation.
I'm not a fan of this set at all (because I disliked the movie) but I'm glad that BrickBros were able to read her 10k supporters, that's awesome!
So glad that Lego is finally making a TRON set! I was hoping for something like a whole sub-theme back in 2010 (when Tron Legacy was released), but better late than never, I suppose. Both the lightcycle and the minifigures should be wondrous to behold in official set form (hopefully before the end of 2018?).
I was hoping for the Red Arrows jet, but I didn't really expect it to pass. After all, it is a REAL military jet, even if it is in airshow colors. Lego is happy to make generic military jets and helicopters in airshow colors for City and Creator, but I guess the Red Arrows stretched policy a bit too far. Besides that, I thought Surf Rescue had real potential to fit in with City. That one was rejected, but the blog post says there might be some set from its creators anyway - just not Surf Rescue itself. So there's some hope there.
The Red Arrows Hawk was my personal favourite of these projects but would perhaps be of limited appeal outside the UK. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the Tron Legacy Light Cycle and congratulate BrickBros UK on their success!
Shame about the beach project not making it but I guess it is too similar to a previous set. I am not buying this set as I have other sets in my sights (Ship in a Bottle for example).
Since ghosts apparently have voices, I will use mine!
I think it sucked that someone leaked the announcement, as I can't stand leaks or people who leak. I was also hoping for the Sega Classic Arcade Machines, but I predicted (and am not overly disappointed about) the Light Cycle being chosen.
I would have liked to have seen at least one project held over for the next review, which itself is going to be interesting.
Happy about the Tron light cycle, wish it was scaled up a little, but was really hoping for the Blues Mobile. At least no more pointless TV show sets.
Hopefully they can package in two cycles into the kit. Maybe add in other colors to switch up looks, etc.
This 2018 lineup turns out better and better. Ever more sets announced that don't interest me at all.
I really liked the original TRON film, but this set doesn't appeal to me very much. From the current selection of Ideas I would have preferred the Red Arrows Hawk as I love this plane as it brings back many happy childhood memories. I have the 1980s Matchbox plastic kit (anyone remember those?) of it though, so at least one model for display.
I also liked (and would have bought) the Bluesmobile, the Arcade Machines, the Venetian Houses and the Medieval Windmill.
But my wallet will thank me when 2018 turns out to be sparse on Lego highlights for me...
I'm kind of hoping that the actual model includes a bunch of transparent colored bricks forming a light ribbon behind the bike. I think it would add quite a bit to the TRON feeling of the set, and look pretty fantastic if it was done right.
What i'm excited about is the next Ideas review. I really hope for the Space Shuttle. It is the same scale as the Saturn V!
I'm guessing they wanted another very small set after saturn V and the fishing store, but do kids even know what Tron is? If they're aiming for the adult market then I suspect the red arrows hawk would have been more popular, given a suitable price some people would have even bought multiples up to 9 (although RAF/Bae licences are more work than expanding their Disney licence)
@dawid I'm really hoping for that one too, although I doubt they will pick it up, since they don't seem to want to start any running themes in the Ideas space, which makes me sad.
Not terribly original considering it's just recycled Ultra Agents.
Wasn't enamored by this round of options in general - my favorite was the arcade games. I have no attachment to this and will pass on it, but am optimistic about the shuttle for the next review!
This will appeal to a relatively niche market, as do many Ideas sets, and that's ok. It's designed by fans for fans. I have not been excited about every Ideas set to go onto production, and there are some submissions I would have very much like to have had instead, but the fact that Lego is mass producing *any* of these fan submissions is pretty incredible and should continue to inspire us all. Likewise, our votes are surely making an impression on Lego. There are many reasons a set might be passed on for mass production, but the support of 10,000+ fans sure gets their attention and has to have some influence, so keep voting!
Devastated that Quest Builder failed but this would've been my second choice
That looks to be a great set! I would have liked to see a Lego "The Office" though.
@Interstellarpig: I didn't really know what the Red Arrows even were before sites started reporting on the Ideas project, and most (not all) of the comments I see wishing it were chosen are UK-based, so I wonder if it's a situation where interest in it was too region-specific.
There were so many good ones to choose from. Personally I was hoping for the Blues Mobile or The Office set (this one would have sold like mad) but I will still be getting the Tron Light Cycle. My wallet likes to see an ideas set with a likely lower price point.
Well, instead of spending $200 on the Medeval Watermill, I will be spending $0.
Thanks, Lego!
So dissapointed. Why not Red Arrows Hawk?! :(
I like the Light Cycle, but Quest Builder is what I was rooting for. =[
I like Tron but I'm actually disappointed the Arcade machines never made it through, no reason why that shouldn't have. It would have been great to make a lego town arcade and Sega are always cool when it comes to obtaining licensing!
The tron bike to me kinda needed a second one for Clu to make the set really nice, it just seems to small otherwise. Also Tron should have been a line years ago by Lego!
So I'm surprised happily but ... let down as well.
Really, really happy about this!!! This will be a purchase from me for sure.
Like 'Adventure Time', I'll be passing on this one. Quest Builder, Bluesmobile, Medieval Watermill, Venetian Houses, Arcade games, The Office: any of these I would have bought. Not interested in this at all.
@ Aanchir. Surely you are taking the piss. The RAF Red Arrows are the world's premier aerobatic display team, and are seen regularly in coverage of major events.
As to why they picked the Tron light cycle, it's an easy tie in with their working licencing agreements with Disney, while the Hawk asumedly falls afoul of TLG's policy of no modern military, as, despite the bright colours, they are fully functional combat aircraft.
I'm a little sad the Power Rangers didn't make it, but the Tron cycle is cool enough. I'll definitely buy one of those. Nostalgia seems to be a big part of the decision making for these things.
I really wanted The Blues Mobile to put next to Ecto-1. Plus, 2 Dan Aykroyds!
Surf Rescue should have made it. No interest in TRON at all. A few dollars saved!
Just wanted to say that I did not appreciate the random origami video spam that started to auto play with the volume turned up when I clicked on this post.
People complaining that the Tron Light Cycle looks too similar to an Ultra Agents set which was likely based on a Tron Light Cycle are somewhat ironic here. I'll admit the set doesn't look overly interesting right now, but it's a prime candidate for significant 'Ideas' production changes and adding a rival Cycle in orange. I kind of wonder whether we could have a trans light blue built-in visor on the helmet of a minifig?
In a similar, smaller progression on Avatar, Tron really showed 3D film making at its best, replete with an atmospheric soundtrack that still (!) gets used in tv and advertising now, so I'd say it was pretty significant as a license, even if there were flaws in the writing. Having said that Disney didn't seem to want to make another Tron sequel because it got obsessed with another Sci-Fi franchise...
Taking a more objective standpoint, 2 great architectural models and 2 fantastic real vehicles in this review, but unfortunately neither of them got picked. Still, at least the medieval mill is a great inspiration piece! I'm afraid I didn't quite realise how many people didn't know what a Red Arrow was until I saw so many puzzled global comments. However, there's also something that frustrates me by prefacing The Office with 'NBC's' but that's probably because in my universe only the Ricky Gervais version exists ;)
At least nothing was NASA based in this review, makes a pleasant change...
@Privatematrix: I’m not kidding in the slightest. I’ve heard of the Blue Angels (which I guess are the US equivalent), but I don’t even hear about them all that often. Maybe I just don’t watch the type of events that aerobatic performances happen at in the first place? Never been too into organized sports or that sort of thing.
Out of the next 6, IMHO:
Wonders of Peru - limited use, extremely big, although a smaller, modular/stacking system might work.
NASA Space Shuttle - already covered by existing sets.
NASA Saturn V umbilical/launch tower - limited use unless you have the Saturn V
I Am Your Father - existing license conflict with SW Disney.
Gilmore Girls - limited appeal, but useful for sticking inside other buildings, unless they shrink the entire building and then create it as a set which might appeal to City builders or part hunters.
NF-15B - limited appeal, extremely similar to the Red Arrows set which has already failed.
The final two look to have the best chance of success, but remember LEGO reserves the right to approve all, some, or NONE, so we could have a time when no sets go through!
Yay for Tron!
But sad news for no Power Rangers...maybe otaining licence was a problem?
Aanchir, I'm with you on zero knowledge of the Red Arrows. Up in Canadaland, we all seem to know about the Snow Birds, primarily.
Also, next Ideas looks like nothing is going to pass. And my gosh people need to chill with all the NASA stuff!
@ Aachir & Willowbee498. Fair enough then. I guess since I've been obsessed with military aviation since I was quite young, I'm not the most impartial judge.
As to the space shuttle, I'm in two minds. I love the set idea, and would buy it to go with my Saturn V, but have a love/hate relationship with the shuttle, as the deadliest NASA platform ever, with 14 fatalities, and also the single biggest killer of exploration of deep space, as a low orbit delivery truck. The new SLS will fix all this and take us back to deep space. It did however launch and then fix the Hubble space telescope.
TLG have done many versions of the shuttle though, and anticipating it not being selected, I have started gathering parts to make my own copy....
I hope the final product at least has the wall effect or whatever it is.
I wish they would have gone with either The Office or Power Rangers...not interested in Tron, although it would make a nice display piece.
Another display piece :(
The fishing store got me excited at the play possibilities, but it seems Ideas is more geared towards display pieces than toy making.
Looking back at the last few selected projects that are still available for purchase:
1. women of nasa - display
2. old fishing store - play
3. adventure time - more display than play IMHO
4. Saturn V - display
5. caterham car - display
6. yellow submarine - display
I want sets I (and my kids - yes, mostly my kids) can play with.
Hm...I’m twelve and I’ve seen Tron, like many of my friends have. What’s this about a limited market towards children?
@TK-421: I am old enough to have watched the original TRON as a kid, but never watched TRON Legacy after having seen the trailers and tought "Meh". None of my friends, family or colleagues know TRON (or TRON Legacy), nor would they be interested. And my own kids only know that there is a DVD labeled TRON in our DVD rack. They never expressed interest in seeing the film. Not up their street either. I am an Eighties geek though, hence my liking of the original film, but as I said above, this set doesn't interest me the least. I for one will be interested to see how well this set does, if it becomes another shelf-hugger like the Exo-Suit - or Adventure Time that also no one I know had ever heard of or seen. Must be a general problem with regional themes, just like the Red Arrows.
Congrats to BBUK - Looks like this one is really dividing opinion. Personally I think it looks pretty cool although a little simplistic for an ideas set. Hopefully the price point will be very low. I buy most ideas sets and will also get this.
I admire anyone who gets through and their work made into an IDEA. Good work BB.
However, there are many others here that deserve to get made too. Jeep, Arcade and Blues Brother are sets id buy in a heartbeat and alot of other good designs that Im sure would look great in other peoples collections
The Tron set is not of interest to me personally, but I'm glad for those who seem to find it interesting. Always good to see more fan-designed sets produced. The only set I personally found appealing of this lot was the Venetian Houses, and honestly I'm not too surprised it didn't get selected - I think it's probably tougher for a large, complex set like this to get the green light, especially with the Old Fishing Store already in production. Oh well - still looking forward to more good Ideas sets in the future!
Daft Punk polybag with purchase of Tron light cycle would be epic
Tron is superb to translate into Lego. However does this mean you have to build a solid brick wall of light trail behind your vehicle?!
Congrats, BrickBros UK! Bummed that the Arcade Machines didn't make it, but oh well.
I'm not the biggest fan of the latest Tron movie, but I adore the original. If TLG can include a classic light cycle as well, it'll be an instabuy for me.
^ I suppose one option for the Light Wall would be to mod the wheel area with clips and have a trans-orange banner element behind the bike - the kind that's used for Merlok 2.0 in Nexo Knights. The light blue version could also come from a Batcave etc. There's probably a better way of doing it and I'm sure the Lego designers will be thinking about it already.
Awesome!!! A must buy for me....maybe even multiples.
Up next 1982 light cycle a mesh to set will be at to pack containing both types of light cycles
1982 light cycle next unless it's a two pack containing both Cycles
How in the world are they going to make that big enough for an ideas set?
It'll probably be the first Ideas polybag set. I thought the marble maze was bad enough but this? No thanks... Its a pass from me.
A shame that the Quest Maker didn't make it, but other than that this was the coolest finalist, and I don't even like TRON!
Yaaaaasssss! I've wanted Tron: Legacy Lego for ages. Can't wait to get it.
Btw, old Tron is really bad
@Brizza_is Back Polybag? It is probably going to be bigger than that!
