Ideas Showcase

Every time I post an Ideas Showcase article I seem to apologise that it has been some time since the previous article. This time there has been over three months since my last Ideas Showcase article.

I haven't been idle but that is no comfort for you so I am committed to getting more reliable in posting these articles.

This week I showcase eight projects. Some have been running for a while and I have gone through the most recent projects to see what is emerging.

Read on to see the eight projects I showcase this week.

Steam Fire Engine

By Mr_Kleinstein

I have Showcased several of Mr Kleinstein's projects. He manages to make really great historical models.

Near where I live is a museum called MOTAT - Museum of Transport and Technology. Many of Mr Kleinstein's projects could easily be displayed at MOTAT.

This project has over 2,000 supporters and is well on the way to the next milestone, 5,000 supporters.

Food Stand Diners

By FrostBricks

This is Frost Bricks second Ideas project and by far the best.

This collection of small diner stands could easily sit in a fairground display.

The project has nearly 3,500 supporters and should get to the 5,000 milestone soon.

El Ángel

By Alan MB

This is Alan MB's only project and it has nearly received 3,000 supporters.

I have chosen an image that shows this model in juxtaposition with the real El Ángel in the background.

The Angel of Independence, or "El Ángel" as it is commonly known, is a victory column on a roundabout on the major thoroughfare of Paseo de la Reforma in downtown Mexico City.

This is an ingenious project that recreates a real-world monument using the limited parts pellet of LEGO.

Hong Kong Street Food

By kaloktoys

This is kaloktoys' only active project.

This is another project that would compliment a market of fairground display.

There is a lot of detail in this model. It will soon reach 3,000 supporters.

Snow-groomer PRINOTH LEITWOLF

By redera00

This is one of Redera00's three Ideas projects. Any one of them could be recommended for this Ideas Showcase article. Go to his profile page to see the other two projects.

Technic does not appear very often in Ideas projects. This snow-groomer looks fantastic and it would be great if it were made into a real Technic set.

It is early days for the snow-groomer but I am confident that it will reach the 1,000 milestone soon.

Parrot with Green and Yellow Feathers, White Face and Yellow Beak Pattern

By ChaMi

ChaMi has produced several Ideas projects and currently has four projects still active.

I like this parrot with green and yellow feathers as it is a large version of the small parrot found in a variety of LEGO sets.

It would be a great display model.

It is early days for this project but I hope it reaches 1,000 supporters soon.

First Flight

By DavidHiller

This project could be renamed First Manned Space Flight as it represents Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in Vostok 1 as he successfully orbits the earth in 1961.

Vostok = East or Orient

During the height of the Cold War, the Russian space program was significantly ahead of the American program. John Glenn archived this feat more than ten months later.

There are many LEGO NASA sets but this Ideas project celebrates the Russian space program.

This is another set in its early days but it should reach 1,000 supporters soon.

David Hiller has two other Ideas projects that are quite good.

3D Puzzle, 2 in 1

By Jcreations912

J Creations 912 has two Ideas projects underway and this one has only just been submitted.

I like the versatility of this Idea: two puzzles in one; a 2D flat Tetris styled puzzle and a 3D cube.

This project will need some help to get it to the 100 supporters and I am confident that this will happen soon.

Queen Victoria Cruise Liner

Later in the week I am giving a short presentation at The New Zealand Maritime Museum for my own Ideas project.

This coincides with Cunard's Queen Elizabeth cruise ship being berthed in Auckland where the museum will be having a presentation on the history of Cunard's Queens.

So there are the eight projects that I have selected this week to showcase. Let me know what you think of my selection and post links to your own favourite Ideas projects.

A Russian space program set would be interesting given all the NASA sets we have had, I would also love any Hong Kong set but a skyline would be my choice.

By in United States,

That parrot is super cute. I could see that being a set!

By in United States,

The street food scene is my favourite of these though without a more substantial building to back it up, I doubt I would buy it.

By in United Kingdom,

First Flight appears to be representing a space walk that didn't occur until Alexey Leonov on Voskhod 2. Gagarin never did a space walk.

By in Canada,

Great selection any of these could have beat out the recent wave of Legp Passed on. I fear though some are too big.

By in United States,

Totally thought the "snow groomer" was a Terran Siege Tank from Starcraft.

By in United Kingdom,

The street food ones pretty cool due to the level of details within it. I could certainly see the parrot selling though as a display piece.

That said, none of them appeal to me enough for me to want to own any of them.

By in Australia,

I really like the Hong Kong street food stall. And I remember the Angel of Independence statue from one of the early seasons of the Amazing Race, heh.

By in United States,

Really like the Steam Fire Engine (with actual working water pump action!) - supported.

This classic modular castle project could use a boost:

@FlagsNZ now that Ideas has been running awhile now, I'm curious as to what the success rate is for projects that have made it to 10,000 supporters. I've supported 79 projects (starting back in Oct 2011) of which 14 have gathered enough votes for review, but only 2 (!) made it into a set. Maybe you could do an analysis of percentage of all projects making it to review phase that have gone on to be approved in your next article?

By in New Zealand,

@ darkstonegrey: I've thought about doing an analysis of the projects that have been reviewed here and where they eventually got to. Thanks for reminding me.

@ Bricklunch: Yes, I was aware of that inconsistency.

By in Germany,

I really like the Vostok idea (and with just a few parts it could be modified into a Voskhod), and I'd also buy the Hong Kong street food thing.
The fire engine is great, but I doubt they will go for that and the snowgroomer should be a real Technic set with a longer shelf life than most Ideas sets.

The snow groomer and the steam fire engine look fantastic! They both really push the detail resptively in System and Technic and it's refreshing to see such a high calibre Technic project, as you say there aren't a huge amount out there. What's more, both of these don't need to be licensed!

That fire engine is amazing. I love everything about the set. The colors, the design, and the parts.

I read this as Ikea Showcase and thought I was lost or Brickset sold out. lol

That modular castle project is so awesome and well thought out. Disappointed to see it not gaining the traction it deserves. Would make great parts packs, too, as well as serving as a nice intro to MOCs for people. Actually, for me, too. I’d love to MOC a castle but Bricklink is unwieldy if you don’t have a pre-made parts list and any retired sets that would make a good base are usually pricey.

I don’t know if LEGO would actually do it because it would kind of be a new theme/series, but I would love it.

The classic parrot is awesome!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love both the food court sets listed - supported both.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That Steam Fire Engine is a beauty.
And those Food Stands are great! They'd add so much to just about any of the 'fairground' kits.
Plus that Modular Castle Creator system mentioned above looks excellent too.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The food stands - American and Hong Kong - are both great but I really like the Vostok. There's so many historical space projects and Russia doesn't get enough recognition. First man on the moon is cool and all, but in light of all of Russia's achievements I wouldn't call it a win to the space race.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love the parrot. I idea of large brick-built models of iconic Lego pieces is a great one and other than the parrot, I wonder what other pieces would be good subjects.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Still hopping for a S.T.A.R labs from the flash!

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Really love the food stand sets, especially the Hong Kong one! Supported both, hope they go far!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It would be best if they make a Hong Kong style modular building with the street food stalls on the ground level.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

The only one that calls out to me are the food stands but the rest are cool for their public.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Steam Fire Engine looks great, and yet I wouldn't buy it because there are too many other must haves to start collecting large vehicle display sets. I can see myself buying the Food Stand Diners, if the price were right. Yes, they would look right at home in a Fairground, along a beach side boardwalk, or to be modified into the Aqua Teen Hunger Force lol.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the food stands but the snow groomer, parrot and cosmonaut are pretty cool too.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

Steam fire engine blew my mind! Hong Kong street food is a why-didn't-i-think-of-that?! moment for me!!! AMAZING AMAZING AH-MAZING!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Great projects all. But , I'd buy the fire engine only

Gravatar
By in United States,

The street food one would go well with some of the Ninjago Movie sets.
