Review: 5005376 Star Wars Anniversary Pod

5005276 Star Wars Anniversary Pod has been the subject of surprising speculation in recent months. A European LEGO store calendar first revealed that the polybag would be available in December and January but LEGO announced a short time later that this promotion had actually been cancelled due to a quality issue.

However, that problem has presumably been resolved as the pod is now available with Star Wars purchases exceeding £50, $60 or €55 at shop.LEGO.com. Hopefully the final product will prove worthy of so much discussion and anticipation!

Minifigure

Darth Vader last appeared in 75183 Darth Vader Transformation and remains unchanged for this polybag, wearing a large helmet which includes tremendous moulded detail and consists of two pieces. A smaller element fits around the Sith Lord's neck and is left behind when the upper section is removed, revealing the scarred face of Anakin Skywalker underneath.

I think the white component used prior to 2017 is more appropriate than this flesh design as the polybag evidently takes inspiration from A New Hope, by which time Darth Vader's skin has been bleached following a lack of exposure to sunlight. However, I do appreciate the impressive printed detail on both sides of the head.

The front of the torso and the legs are also intricately decorated and look marvellous in relation to the movie, featuring some colourful buttons on the life-systems computer and a metallic silver belt buckle. Unfortunately, the back of the torso is completely plain but this is concealed by a soft fabric cape that fits around the neck of the minifigure and matches the printed robes very nicely. As usual, Darth Vader is armed with a red lightsaber.

The Completed Model

Official images of this polybag suggested that it would include a plain black pod, much like that used in 5004929 Batman Battle Pod last year. In fact, the container is finished in chrome black which looks absolutely brilliant, although keeping the chrome surface free from finger prints is almost impossible! I presume it was this chromed design that caused a delay to the release of the polybag but it was worth waiting for in my opinion.

A lenticular panel is fitted to the front of the container. This shows either the LEGO Star Wars logo and the Death Star superlaser at the moment of firing or the eight superlaser tributary beams meeting at a central point, depending on the position of the viewer. It is difficult to make the LEGO Star Wars branding disappear entirely but this still works reasonably well when compared with many similar toys.

The pod opens to reveal a small section of the Tantive IV's white hallway where Darth Vader made his very first appearance. I like how printed tiles have been used to add some extra detail in this extremely limited space and the folding platform is a nice idea, allowing you to display the minifigure in front of the brick-built doorway or the sticker on the right of the pod.

Overall

I have enjoyed collecting these pods over the last few months and 5005276 Star Wars Anniversary Pod is probably my favourite one yet. The lenticular design looks good and I like the sliver of the Tantive IV's famous hallway inside. However, it is the chromed exterior that really distinguishes this pod from others so hopefully LEGO will continue to find ways of differentiating these little sets.

The Darth Vader minifigure is excellent too. Personally, I prefer the version with a white head as that is a little more faithful to the Original Trilogy, although this polybag is definitely a worthy acquisition if you have not yet added the Sith Lord to your collection. I would also recommend it to seasoned Star Wars collectors simply because 5005276 Star Wars Anniversary Pod is unlike any past Star Wars polybag.

Look forward to picking this up.
Nice review!
The printing on Vader's head looks excellent to me. Would be nice if they had blank pods to customize.
Is that background a sticker? Or already glued in?

I've been dying to see this properly the detail on the minifig is fantastic and I love the battle pod idea, and the scene around lord vader,
I would buy this out right if lego made it an option, 10/10..

Who thinks lego should produce a Luke skywalker battle pod next ?

The one Pod I didn't wanted and now I regret it, can't LEGO extend his availability till May 4?

LEGO went to the effort of chroming the pod but not Vader??????? They would have made this a thousand times more desirable if they'd left the pod regular black and chromed Vader.

I've just ordered. The solo sets are now available so loads to choose from. I was going to wait until May but really want this pod. It looks great, love the presentation.

By in Germany,

That "Chrome" just looks like glossy black to me. Have got some Darth Vaders already and this isn't any different or exclusive in any way, so an easy pass.

This looks great, especially the Tantive IV section

@Isaac The Animator Thx man. Wonder if they'll make these blank to add different backgrounds.

The original pod pictures, the pod appeared to be pearl silver, so looks like they changed out the pod. Chromed seems a step up though! And unless I'm mistaken the spend (in the UK at least) that was required back in December was £60 of Star Wars, not £50, so that's a plus too.

Mine is already on the road! Very collectable. I hope there are more of these in a future.

I considered buying some of the new sets to get this but after seeing that he doesn’t have his white head I’m not going to get it , I already have Vader’s transformation set so I have no need for this !

I don't need another minifig but I actually really love the interior design of the pod.

By in Germany,

Thank you for the review! The pods always reminded me of something from the 90s, like you're supposed to put this on your belt and carry around - what worked in a fancy TVC and not even one kid would ever do in RL : )

Happy for all those who will get their first Vader 2.0, cause the minifig is amazing. I got the Transformation set, so I'm not interested and will pass the May 4th offers as well. If they made an unreleased minifig from the movies, I'd be all over it. No matter how obscure it was. Would even make 2 purchases if they released a Tonika sister! : )

Thanks for the great review. I was going to wait a while on any Star Wars purchases but this made me want to really get the pod.

CapnRex, I hope you’re on commission!

It would have been nice if Vader had an ANH-style torso print, but it still looks good.

Wishlist: SOME TMNT-PODS!!! :-D

By in Germany,

The first pod I really want, but I don't have 55€ worth of sets to buy at the moment. As usual for these promos.

By in United Kingdom,

I was hoping that it would be the white face version as I already have the flesh colour one. Oh well. Just means I don't have to fork over the £50 for it

By in United States,

I agree with other. LEGO just does not have many sets I would want to buy to get up to the 60 dollars to get one of these. At least with items like the Batman pod, the figure was unique.

Id rather go buy the transformation set so I get Darth along with a battle damaged version, Emperor and a couple of droids (and it is still cheaper than what it takes to get the pod)

I wonder how many people are buying multiple copies of the transformation set to get the pod?

By in United States,

So they intentionally make it available BEFORE May 4, I'm tempted to wait and get it on the secondary market. Almost all of the sets priced around $60 or lower can be had more cheaply on the secondary market, thus making me want to buy this on the secondary market as well.

Anyone have any idea how much it would go for on eBay?
