Avengers: Infinity War - Comparing the sets to the film

Posted by ,

A decade has passed since the Marvel Cinematic Universe started and Avengers: Infinity War, the culmination of the eighteen movies released so far, has finally arrived. The film appears to have been very well received overall and the six LEGO sets based on the movie have fared similarly well with the majority of fans.

However, accuracy to the source material is an important factor where licensed products are concerned so today we are going to discuss how the Avengers: Infinity War range compares with the film. Marvel Super Heroes sets often perform poorly in this respect but I have high expectations that those from Avengers: Infinity War will impress.

This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War so I recommend not reading any further if you wish to avoid them.

76108 Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown

76108 Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown is the largest Avengers: Infinity War set and depicts one of the first scenes in the film, during which Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian arrive to seize the Time Stone on behalf of Thanos. This set provides reasonably comprehensive coverage by including both of those characters as well as Doctor Strange, Iron Man and Spider-Man who try to defend the stone. Bruce Banner and Wong also take part in the battle so would have suited this set and the absence of the latter is particularly disappointing as he is not currently available anywhere else.

Peter Parker's apartment does not appear in the movie but forms a perfect backdrop for the action in this set, potentially representing any building in New York. It is also worth noting that Spider-Man wears his standard suit during this scene in the film, only donning the Iron Spider garb when he leaves Earth in pursuit of the captured Doctor Strange. However, Peter wears that suit for the rest of the movie so I think it was wise to put the Iron Spider in this set as he is not found in any of the others.

76102 Thor's Weapon Quest

Thor resolves to construct a new weapon after being soundly defeated by Thanos so journeys to Nidavellir with the help of Rocket Raccoon and Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy. 76102 Thor's Weapon Quest compares very favourably with those scenes, including all three of the heroes as well as the small pod in which they travel to the legendary forge. This craft looks superb in relation to the movie and is surprisingly prominent so the set might prove more popular now that the film has been released.

Furthermore, Thor receives a replacement eye from Rocket so the minifigure is perfect, contrary to my initial expectation. The weapon forge is not based directly upon anything specific from the film but it is perfect for play and bears a loose resemblance to the lens that focuses energy from the neighbouring star. In fact, the only notable omission from the set is Eitri. He would have been a welcome addition but does not play an enormous role in the film.

Our full review of the set is available here.

76107 Thanos: Ultimate Battle

The Guardians of the Galaxy join forces with Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange to ambush Thanos on Titan. 76107 Thanos: Ultimate Battle takes inspiration from this conflict but also includes several important elements from the movie which would not be suitable for any other sets. Gamora, for instance, plays a vital role in earlier scenes but is killed before the Guardians reach Titan while their new spacecraft does not appear during this battle, although the LEGO rendition looks fantastic in relation to the source material.

Many Marvel fans have expressed disappointment with the Thanos bigfig and I think its flaws become even more apparent after seeing Avengers: Infinity War. The Mad Titan only wears his helmet and shoulder armour during flashbacks and the opening scene of the movie so it seems strange that he appears with them here. Hopefully we will see a version without these accoutrements at some point, perhaps in another set which has yet to be revealed.

Our full review of the set is available here.

76101 Outrider Dropship Attack

The climactic battle between our heroes on Earth and the remaining members of Thanos' Black Order takes place in Wakanda. 76101 Outrider Dropship Attack is the smallest of the three sets representing these scenes and includes a wonderful selection of minifigures. Black Widow's hair piece is not perfect but Steve Rogers looks great and I was pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of the Outriders who do have six arms in the film, just like the minifigures. These animalistic aliens attack in vast numbers so it is pleasing to see them in a small set, allowing you to assemble an army easily.

Enormous pyramidal dropships are used to deploy the Outriders and this model is therefore much smaller than the vehicles in the movie, as one would expect given the low price point. However, the designer has definitely captured the shape of the craft and its small size is tremendous for play so I think it would be difficult to improve upon this set, despite its obvious inaccuracies.

Our full review of the set is available here.

76104 The Hulkbuster Smash-up

Bruce Banner, Sam Wilson and Proxima Midnight all participate in the Battle of Wakanda so seem well suited to 76104 The Hulkbuster Smash-up. The Hulkbuster's primary opponent is definitely Cull Obsidian rather than Proxima Midnight but it makes perfect sense to include the female villain instead. It would have been brilliant to see M'Baku, Scarlet Witch, War Machine and Bucky in one of these sets based on the scenes in Wakanda, although the minifigure selections are already generous in my opinion. Perhaps the aforementioned heroes will feature together in a future set.

The Hulkbuster should be about the same size as a bigfig so from that perspective this model is too large. However, its size has allowed the designer to include impressive detail and the overall shape is therefore very faithful to that of the Hulkbuster in Avengers: Infinity War. The turret, on the other hand, is not present in the film but it does provide some additional play value by providing a storage space for the mysterious Soul Stone.

Our full review of the set is available here.

76103 Corvus Glaive Thresher Attack

The Wakandan wall from 76103 Corvus Glaive Thresher Attack does not make an appearance in the film either but the laboratory is important as Shuri attempts to extract the Mind Stone from Vision. I wonder whether the gate is intended to represent the narrow section of the energy shield around Wakanda which is opened by T'Challa. This tactic focuses the Outriders' assault on a single point in front of the heroes and drives them into a bottleneck where their strength in numbers becomes more difficult to exploit.

Corvus Glaive was definitely the most appropriate member of the Black Order for this set as he enters Wakanda surreptitiously, attacking Shuri and Vision without warning. The threshing machine outside is far smaller than the enormous combine-like vehicle which rolls across the battlefield in the film but even that exceeds my expectations. Not having looked at any other toys, I had assumed that the thresher was an invention of the set designer so was pleasantly surprised when it was actually deployed!

At the beginning of this article I made reference to past Marvel Super Heroes sets and their relative inaccuracy to the films from which they take inspiration. The Avengers: Infinity War range undoubtedly fares much better than any previous wave, including almost every major character from the film and depicting several integral scenes with surprising authenticity.

I would welcome a set containing a different version of Thanos and there are still some heroes missing from the subtheme as well as outlying characters such as Eitri and Red Skull. However, that was probably inevitable given the huge range of heroes and villains in the movie so I am very satisfied with the overall coverage of Avengers: Infinity War.

Did you enjoy Avengers: Infinity War and how do the sets compare with the film in your opinion? Let us know in the comments.

I have one set which is the captain America and black widow drop ship attack set, i love it, but have not seen the film yet but really looking forward to seeing it..

By in United States,

There were 64 main characters, according to Marvel, so they did a good job of putting the more important ones in

I don't care about the movie one bit, but it is nice that Disney is letting LEGO in more on the ship designs in their movies. Too bad the bad guys went from 6 hands to only four during production.

By in Ireland,

The movie was fantastic, and now I'm severely tempted to pick up the Sanctum Sanctorum.

By in United Kingdom,

I loved the film and am only missing one set so will be picking it up really soon but I think lego did a amazing job at keeping the sets low priced and capture scenes!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I haven't seen the movie but it's good to know that they're making the sets more accurate.

Would be really good if Lego created a series of collectible minifigures based on the MCU. Would allow us to some figures who haven't been released before :)

By in United States,

The sets are great depictions, great job Lego. I would have included Scarlet Witch given how prominent she was.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was impressed with the accuracy after seeing the film.

I don't know how else they could have depicted the Shields Wakanda used in a lego set so I'm happy with what they did.

I'm surprised there wasn't a set depicting the circle Thanos ship that sat over New York given the prominence in both the film and trailers.

Also being from Edinburgh the deep fried window sign is 100% true!

By in United Kingdom,

I would like to see a minifig size Thanos. Obviously the scale would be wrong but they could do better detail like on the Hulk from that polybag

By in Norway,

I was really surprised at how accurate the Tresher Attack set was! I didn't want to comment under the review so as not to spoil anyone, so I appreciate this opportunity. I thought the "Wakandan wall" represented the Panther cave/Shuri's lab, more than the outer defenses. The windows look like the energy fields protecting Martin Freeman while he pilots the Royal Talon.

By in Sweden,

I loved the movie, and I'm planning on picking up the Hulkbuster and Dropship Attack on Black Friday. I hope Lego puts out an additional set with Bucky, Wong and War Machine, as they were present on the Lego Infinity War poster.

By in United Kingdom,

Really great article, it's fun to hear these kinds of opinions. I was similarly delighted to see the thresher show up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Probably nitpicky, but T'Challa doesn't have them open the shield to deal with their 'strength in numbers,' as they were severely crippled in that aspect already since the shields were obliterating them. The shield was opened to keep the outriders from circling around behind Vision, where even the small amount that got through would be a much bigger threat.

All that aside, I don't imagine this set is supposed to represent that shield anyway, as this is pretty close to the architecture-style seen around the lab in Black Panther.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@XStrike - Indeed, although an additional result of that tactic was to focus the Outriders' attack on a single point in front of the defensive line, as described in the article.

Gravatar
By in France,

Red Skull appears in 76017-1: Avengers: Captain America vs. Hydra

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^, Right on that XStrike. They were about to circle around the kingdom and the Wakanadians don't have enough soldiers to fight on all fronts. The creatures where killing themselves to weaken the dome and break through on all sides. Military flaw though with the Wakanadians: having ALL your forces on one front/one side. Gotta' protect the rear.
When they opened the one point in the shield I thought they'd do the Zulu buffalo horn formation to draw them in and encircle with the 'horns'.
With the Corvus Glaive set, I wasn't crazy about it and even though not accurate it does capture alot for more play features and combines the 'shield' with the architecture and the lab where Vision is being worked on by T'Challa's sister. Makes it more of a fun play set for kids (and me ;)

I think they covered most of their bases with these sets. Thanos ship or that circular ship and other missing characters can be moc'd and figs found. Although Bucky does have a new looking cybernetic arm and Wong isn't in any official set.
Oh, and I would've LOVED a space forge playset with a big fig Eitri.

By in United States,

My only disappointment is the lack of so many important minifigures. Overall an amazing line.

By in United States,

"In fact, the only notable omission from the set is Eitri. He would have been a welcome addition but does not play an enormous role in the film."

I politely beg to differ... I would argue he literally had an enormous role XD

By in Brazil,

They were really faithful to the movie, with one or other exception. I truly believed the thresh was just some gimmick designers invented, heh. At first I was disapointed there was no Hulk but this totally justified since Banner is having trouble with his green part and he doesn't appear aprte from the initial scene. My only complain is the absence (for now) of Bucky and Wanda.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I do think it’s a shame they didn’t put in an Eitri, if only for the delightful irony of Peter Dinklage being represented by a bigfig

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I always enjoy reading reviews and comments about superhero sets because I haven't got a clue about the source material and keep lmfao when I read how some people obsess about details for such an outlandish franchise.
Best of all, Rocket Racoon. My god, sounds like the perfect companion to crazy 90s gaming mascots like Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Aero the Acro-Bat, Bubsy Bobcat or Awesome Possum.
;-)))

@Brickalili
If Lego does a Eitri figure, I think that they will doe a brickbuild figure, like Giant-Man or Aris.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

With the gigantic amount of characters from the film, a second wave of Infinity War sets is needed to include even the majority of characters from the film.
Wong, Bucky, War Machine, Loki, Nebula, Heimdall, M'Baku, Drax, Okoye, Mantis, Scarlet Witch are the major omissions I can think.

By in United States,

Great article! I just saw the film yesterday and loved every second of it. I really enjoy the current sets we have for it, but would love another wave. Also can't wait to see what Avengers 4 yields!

@The Red Squadron YouTube, it is not the Milano but is indeed the same class of ship as it - instead, this ship is named the Benatar and was acquired at some point in the four years since Guardians Vol. 2.

@jdm, he means stonekeeper Red Skull. ;-)

@Brickalili, but they have represented him that way before; as Mighty Eagle!

^ just seen the movie - i understand now! ;-)

By in United States,

Very accurate sets

By in United States,

Sanctum Sanctorum was really impressive, especially the effort to include Peter's apartment which doubled playability and could fit in with other Marvel sets not connected to the movie. Only two omissions in that set that I really would have liked to see: 1) a head and hairpiece for Peter Parker when his mask is off, which is frequent in this movie and would give an opportunity to show just some of the many Tom Holland facial expressions, and 2) Wong. I was really hoping to see Wong in that set. I love Benedict Wong's portrayal specifically and he was missing from the previous Doctor Strange release as well.

The additional scenery in the Thor Weapon Quest was disappointing though at that price point there may not have been many options.

The prioritisation of characters included, with the exception of maybe Scarlet Witch (who was pivotal in the film), I think were strong choices. Included the whole Black Order and most key players from the other big scenes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Six stones... six sets. Clever.

Ebony Maw could use a head piece though, imo.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Better idea - a Thanos bigfig that includes a removable helmet and armor piece!!

I'm disappointed LEGO has not allowed bigfigs to have removable headpieces yet. Would open up a lot of customization possibilities just to switch helmets and hair :/

Planning to eventually pick up all of the sets - already have the two smallest ones, but Thanos and the Gauntlet go for not much less than the full set, and after seeing the film, I'd rather like Ebony Maw and Proxima Midnight... and then the last set might just be to make it six for six. :/

By in Puerto Rico,

I loved the movie and it's Titanic/Rogue One a Star Wars story. I own all of the sets but Courvious Glavive Thresher Attack (so getting it and perhaps another building), Thor Quest and Ultimate Battle which I won't be getting. I wonder if Lego will make minifigures that disintegrate before our eyes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Any more info on rumors of an additional D2C Infinity War set for this summer? I like all the sets but Star-Lord needs his helmet and swap over the Owen Grady face from JW sets. Good should have also come with a 1x2 printed tile of his game. Maybe the Circle ship will be a Polybag later on. We need a Wong minifig!

Gravatar
By in South Africa,

Okoye, Nebula, War Machine, Drax, Mantis and Scarlet Witch left out, even though they had equally as big a role as some of the other characters featured in these sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There are some very in my opinion big characters missing, Although I would have to say that 6 sets does not justify such a large scale of a film. I only watched it today but I did want to get home set all the stones into thanos gauntlet and pull apart some minifigures (somehow putting them through a shredder would be a waste). How ever being nearly a big fan of the MCU as I am a AFOL. Apart from Antman and the Wasp there isn't another "disney" marvel film out until next Feb, Fingers crossed we see more infinity war sets then the disappoint "filler" sets we seem to get. Lego / Disney do it with Star Wars as a rule there seems to be 2 waves of sets for a film.

By in United States,

I remember the Thresher getting damaged in the battle, with the sawblades flying across the battlefield. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think that’s what the play feature is supposed to be.
