First images of 42082 Rough Terrain Crane
Posted by CapnRex101,
42082 Rough Terrain Crane is currently on display at a European trade show and rus.afol has published a couple of images taken at the event. This set will cost €229.99 and contains 4057 pieces so will narrowly surpass the 3929-piece 42055 Bucket Wheel Excavator as the largest Technic set ever released!
Thank you to Zusammengebaut for drawing this to our attention.
You can view an image showing the full length of the crane boom after the break...
What do you think of this enormous set? Let us know in the comments.

To be perfectly honest, it looks good to me, but I can't imagine where all those pieces go. Looks roughly the size and complexity of the Claas Xerion which has less than half the pieces. Or is the model in the pictures incomplete? Judging by the box in the back of the second picture, it doesn't appear to be.
Anyway, going by the RRP, this will someday be available for between 150 and 180 Euros, making it quite a bargain for that many pieces.
Whoah! Where am I going to put that?
After the BWE, I swore off buying any more large Technic sets.
Well, that's out the window now, ain't it.
I'm not buying Technic anymore but it seems like a nice set.
If it's really gooing to cost EU 230, that's an excellent price for such a large set, comparable to the BWE, even considering many of those will be simple pins and axles. Compared to things like the 911 or the 6X6 tow truck, for instance....
All AFOL sets are getting larger and larger with the likes of UCS Millennium Falcon, Roller Coaster and now this one. This is not so pleasant for our wallets but I guess releasing larger sets is more profitable for the LEGO Group.
Looks like a great model indeed, but I'm gonna pass on this one. Just waiting for the Bugatti...
I really miss Studded Technic and the Metal Crane Hook- I’d get back into it if there were more of it. This is a beautiful model though. Is it Technic Dude scale?
Is it 2018 summer release or end of 2018?
“What do you think *of* this enormous set?”
Sorry, my grammar alarm was going off.
Hard to see the true scale but that looks like a very big set. I can only assume there's a lot of pieces tied up in the chassis. Looks like one of the better models from the Summer line-up. I now just need pics of the Bugatti!
It's hard to tell, but it looks like it's got some of those big quarter circle gear racks from the BWE in black.
This looks great! I'm an industrial crane technician, and the only love I got was the semi-gantry with the cargo train. This is a beautiful mobile and will be added to my collection!
That thing looks like a beast.
Are there only two sections to the boom, i.e. one telescoping stage? You'd think after 40 years they could have improved on the 855 design!
When the boom is retracted and lowered it's still going to stick out a foot in front of the crane.

Actually just picked up one of these classics on eBay...
@Joefish - I had the same thought, but from a quick google image search this appears to be typical of this sort of machine: https://www.google.com/search?q=rough+terrain+crane&rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS758US758&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjIgvborfvaAhUPNd8KHTSkAAYQ_AUI1wEoAQ&biw=1309&bih=699
But I'm sure @Alxlwson could confirm for us!
Powerfunctions? Check
V8 engine? Check
Massive tires from the Volvo front-end loader? Check (I think)
Great red/black color scheme instead of that tiresome light blue we can't seem to escape? CHECK
I've been leaning towards the Chiron ever since I saw early pics. But this looks like a potential addition. Ever since they nerfed the Ship-in-a-bottle, I've had some extra room in my budget.
Looks meh. I never was a big fan of Technic.
What a model. I love how bulked up it is. The transition to the crane seems kind of rough, but the crane itself looks great, and very tall. Not much else to say, it seems very complete. I may give this one a shot. But then again there's the Bugatti that's yet to be revealed...
Very nice set...and now on my "buy" list. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the transmission works on this thing!
Wow, I think I love it but I have a few comments.
First, how the heck are they shoving 4,000 pieces in there? There must be 2,000 technic pins. I have the crawler 42042 with 1,401 pieces and the MK II 42009 with 2,606 pieces. Both are sitting next to me right now in my home office (I am a structural engineer so they are a business expense...right?). I keep staring at these new pics trying to figure out how this thing has over 50% more pieces than the MK II. The body is a little wide, but also probably a little shorter overall length. Just not seeing it without them using a ton of extra pins.
Second, regarding the boom sections, many real world cranes with similar uses have 4 or more boom sections. Zoom into the pics from that google search and look at the rings near the top of the boom. Heck, even the technic MK II 42009 has 3 sections of boom. They could have allowed for the lowered boom to be shorter...or dare I say it...made the fully extended boom even LONGER!.
What a monster of a set!!! The set does include that sort of building behind it which will swallow up some of that piece count. Looking forward to seeing how it all works.
Im puzzled how 4,000 pieces fits in to this thing like the size of the Claas Xerion. Also, kinda strange the Chiron has been a no show so far. Forest Harvester, Forklift and Volvo Im guessing will be revealed soon too? Excited tho
Will it hold the UCS Falcon?
I like that it is other than yellow. But it is just too big and expensive to seriously consider to add it to my collection. At least not before I see the Bugatti...
Would be interesting to know how they've solved the turntable? Such a large and heavy structure is not easy to rotate smoothly. Will we see a new turntable element in this crane set?
@HoMa - donutsftw has noticed that it probably includes the large quarter circle gear racks (in black) so it will use the same, or similar, rotating support mechanism as 42055. Question is: will this one do the full 360°...?
Love it, can't wait to get one....
@donutsftw & @bananaworld - It definitely used the quarter gear racks in black, and uses piece '4211758' as a ball bearing type rotation. It's quite sturdy, and can do a complete 360 rotation.
In terms of size and complexity, this this is much much larger than the Claas model, and has a lot of amazing features. With the boom extended, the model is 1 metre tall, and the functions are highly complex.
Having seen this model in the flesh, it's probably going to take the crown of my favorite technic model to date, as it truly is outstanding.
That is so cool, I want to get one.
@Ddave: much larger than the Claas? How so? The length seems almost identical, the hight of course is larger, but when I compare this to the BWE (which has less pieces), I still can't wrap my head around where all those pieces are supposed to go.
The chassis looks very much like that from the Claas, the crane house reminds me of 8043, and the crane boom looks less complicated than the one found on 42009.
Odd. Yet still a cool set nonetheless. Definitely on my list.
Crane looks good but won't be able to get. But are those boxes to the left of it the city trains? The small images on the side of the box when zoomed in look similar to the leaked images of them.
Just sharing my thoughts.
I bet that piece of a building is 400+ 1x2 bricks and plates alone :)
Let's hope it has some exciting technical tricks up its sleeve and doesn't suffer from the same issues as 42009 MK3 crane did.
@apcsb: what kind of issues does your 42009 have? Mine works perfectly in every way.
@r12ax7 Yup, it's typical! Then they lower the block down some, chain it to the front of the crane, and spool in the rope some. Keeps the block from swinging around and helps keep the table from rotating during travel.
I'm stoked for this!
great and stuff. But what about Bugatti? It's coming soonish and still no leaks? whoa
WHOA!!! VERY NICE....
I haven't bought a Technic set for years, being a Star Wars fan I'ts normally grey Lego that I'm building with, and to be honest grey is getting a bit boring, so I was looking for something a bit different.
I liked the look of Ninjago City, but this set has certainly got my attention!!!
It looks superb...a real substantial model with some weight to it, and looks great in red as opposed to the normal technic yellow.
Lego funds directed towards this for sure.
