Brickset at the LEGO Fan Media Days
Posted by Huw,
Later this week CapnRex101 and I will be in Billund for the annual Recognised LEGO Fan Media (RLFM) days.
We'll be there, along with representatives from many of the biggest and best LEGO websites and magazines, to discuss matters of mutual interest with LEGO's community team, and also to interview LEGO designers.
This year we have an opportunity to talk to designers from the Harry Potter, Creator Expert, Jurassic World and Unikitty! teams, so if you have anything you'd like us to ask them then please let us know in the comments, but note that we will not be asking anything about future products and plans.
While we are in Billund we'll be updating our social media channels frequently, so make sure you're tuned in to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the latest news, which will include the official unveiling of the Technic Bugatti Chiron on Friday morning.

Did they design unikitty sets first and then made the show or they made the show first and them designed a sets?
Have a good time.
Make sure to ask about monorail revival, I know they love that question ;)
Just kidding, of course. I'd love to know about the design process for the new rollercoster track, how they came up with this particular solution.
-Where are my Triceratops?! :D
-Will we get more JW sets?
-WHo created Unikitty characters? Will they appear in new movie?
I'd like to know how they decided which specific scenes and characters from the original JP movie to include in the original JP set.
Do the designers ever feel shocked by the prices the sets they design end up being in the same way that a FOL might?
IF could just ask which "mean" person decided to double bag more or less identical Uni Kitty collectable figures. Series 2 lets have no inner bag and a unique "accessory" please its costing me a fortune :-)
When they designed new Harry Potter sets they based most of them on the old Harry Potter sets or most of them by a movie ?
Please ask if the marketing teams can find a way to make the location based exclusives more widely available to AFOLs. Perhaps directly to members of recognised groups? I am thinking of recent examples such as:
Canada - make and take Solo Falcon
Florida - legoland micro builds
USA - brick built Porg
I don't know how relevant a question it really is, but I'd love to know what their opinion is on 'feeling' the blind CMF packs - and whether it was a conscious decision to make the Unikitty bags impossible to feel? (I appreciate very similar to one of the questions above!)
Regarding Harry Potter sets, why the choice for brickbuilt Basilisk and Phoenix ( https://images.brickset.com/sets/AdditionalImages/75954-1/75954_alt4.jpg ) when we had nice parts for the old ones ?
Specially when we still have big dinos parts in Jurassic World sets...
"Do the designers ever feel shocked by the prices the sets they design end up being in the same way that a FOL might?" - they shouldn't because one of the basic parameters of new set design is its expected price. That's why they have to include e.g. stickers instead of printed parts if they want to increase part count or push new part molds.
I would like to know why they switched from sand green roofing to dark stone gray for Harry Potter.
See you there. Travel safe.
I know you cant ask them about new products so what happened to the SW Constraction line of sets (Solo, Darth Maul, Ranger Trooper, etc)? That train in the Solo film could go great as a set same as the RO turtle ship and the AT-ACT plus AT-Hauler and Enfys Nest.
I'd like to know what the designers' feelings are in regards to sets that connect with each other. They've dabbled with the idea, but never explored the idea to its fullest: Jabba's Palace + Rancor Pit, TLBM sets creating the Gotham Power Station, Hogwarts Great Hall + Whomping Willow... I wonder if they've considered the idea as a way to get a UCS-level setting released at major retail.
Would also love to know their preferred technique for squaring up single-stud connections! Currently building the Downtown Diner and my girlfriend is seriously peeved at trying to line up all the 1x1s to create smooth/uniform surfaces. (I had this same issue with the seats of the MINI Cooper!) Haha
Are these new HP sets supposed to be more based on the books, or early movies? And do they plan to slowly work their way back through the series again, ending with Deathly Hallows?
Would you mind telling the Jurassic world designers great job for me? But the Unikitty sets... I guess those are just for a different audience that does not include me.
Will the Unikitty sets & minifigure series be given a more general UK release - rather than just Tesco? And they are not even available on LEGO.com yet...
Regarding Star Wars: What are the major difficulties in designing models for upcoming movies - given the short amount of time and probably very restricted concept art provides. And what does it feel like when you watch the movie afterwards seeing "your design" for the first time on the screen?
Ask about the Hogwarts express why did they not include a track piece with the train station would have really completed the look
What i'd love to know is what impact did the fan community have on Lego deciding to bring back Harry Potter. Obviously there was a business decision due to Fantastic Beasts but they could have done only sets from that.
I would love to know why they chose to break with tradition for the Downtown Diner and include minifigures with unique facial expressions rather than the classic grin.

Was going to ask that very question myself!
I have a question: What made them decide to revive the Harry Potter theme?
Is the UCS Falcon as big a set both piece-wise and price-wise as we'll ever see or do they think, due to the level of demand that there is a market for bigger?
I'd love to know why they are re-introducing the Harry Potter theme, as they could have done so when the first Fantastic Beasts movie came out. Also, for Creator Expert, did they design the Roller Coaster because the pieces came with Joker Manor and then they could do so, or did they design the track pieces for the full Roller Coaster and use them on Joker Manor because why not?
Can we expect to see a new "Pirates" line soon-ish (1-2 years)?
Possible Creator Expert Questions ?!
How do they decide what cars are made into Creator Expert sets?
Similarly to how they based the London Bus off of the slopped piece in the back, do they find a particular section of a set and then design from there (or how do they go about designing the set once they know the car)?
Is there any reason the one-hit-wonder goat element (Design ID 96089) hasn't featured in any of the Jurassic World/Park sets? Seems like the ideal opportunity to bring back a great mold.
Please ask the Lego team why there are not more Lego Stores in the United States. My nearest Lego store is 80 miles away. As a result, I buy most of my Lego from Walmart, Target, and Barnes and Noble. Toys R Us is going out of business, so there goes another source.
I have a burning question for the Jurassic World team: why are no herbivorous (plant-eating) dinosaurs featured in the sets? These kinds of dinosaurs feature in the Jurassic World films after all, almost as prevanantly as the meat-eaters! Were they excluded because of licensing agreements (i.e. the license holder only wanted LEGO to feature carnivores), they didn't fit in any of the sets, or maybe did making them require too many new moulds/be too costly (given many of the Fallen Kingdom dinos re-use old dino moulds from Dino and OG Jurassic World)?
Please note, I am discounting the "Gallimimus" (technically not a carnivorous dinosaur) polybag from 2015 as the dino in that was a recolour of the Coelophysis mould.
Why do they only make one modular building a year. I believe there would be a market for more than one a year or is it restricted by cost or what the theme should be? I’m in billund this week on a holiday, can I join you (i
doubt it but no harm In asking)
When designing the Disney sets, why were minidolls used as opposed to minfigs, especially since there's a minifig of Aladdin, but a minidoll of Jasmine?
Ask them why they suddenly stopped using classic minifig head in Creator Expert modulars. What do they say to fans who lost their interest in Creator Expert collecting because of reissues, like the Taj Mahal? Ask why they didn’t improve the old antiquated Taj Mahal design when there were so many opportunities?
Could Lego make the bags in kits re-sealable so that they can be used to sort the bricks into separate colours when a kit is opened and then put back in the box.
I have always wondered.
How much of their own childhood memories influence the sets they choose to design or pursue?
Going to the carnival or a parents love of sports cars; does this affect certain details in the sets that we eventually see., to what extent.
why are there no plates/bricks half the height of a standard 4x2 brick? why is the height only available at 1/3rd height size?
