Review: 41619 Darth Vader

LEGO has produced six Star Wars BrickHeadz so far, the majority of which have been reasonably impressive but have not really stood out among the best of these figures. 41619 Darth Vader, on the other hand, appears very interesting.

The Sith Lord's distinctive helmet is intricately detailed and I like the colourful designs on his chest. Hopefully this model will look as good in person as it does in official images, doing justice to one of cinema's greatest villains.

The Completed Model

I find that the most visually striking BrickHeadz are often those which are particularly colourful, such as 41588 The Joker or 41595 Belle. Darth Vader might therefore appear somewhat drab, wearing a black armoured suit, were it not for some lovely printed detail and an excellent helmet which captures both the appearance of the villain in the movies and the characteristic BrickHeadz style.

Altering an iconic design is always very challenging and I expect the designer of this set had difficulty when building Darth Vader's helmet. Its complicated shape seems ill-suited to the BrickHeadz theme but most of the helmet's vital features are present, including rounded eyes, a curving protective shell around the neck and an air intake which is represented by a printed 2x2 triangular tile. The printed 2x4 curved slope on the forehead looks great too and further detail covers the front of the torso.

Darth Vader looks less interesting when viewed from the rear, although his cape is constructed nicely and the Sith Lord's red lightsaber adds a welcome splash of colour. The green, red and metallic silver chest controls look marvellous as well. Dark bluish grey plates and some printing combine to form Lord Vader's shoulder armour which works well but I think pearl silver may have been a more suitable colour.

While one hand grips a lightsaber, the other is stretched forward as though prepared for a Force Choke which is a fun detail. Darth Vader can be displayed on a standard BrickHeadz base, consisting of a 6x6 plate with some tiles on top. This is of vital importance here as the Sith Lord's large helmet feels fairly heavy and there is considerable weight focused at the back of the model.

Overall

I had high expectations for 41619 Darth Vader and this set does not disappoint. Part of its appeal is in the idea of turning such a mighty villain into an adorable BrickHeadz figure, much like 41605 Thanos, but the model is also highly detailed and includes a wonderful selection of printed pieces.

However, that reliance upon printed elements is perhaps somewhat disappointing when compared with other BrickHeadz and the square helmet design may not appeal to everyone, despite being consistent with the style of the series. Nevertheless, 41619 Darth Vader is undoubtedly my favourite Star Wars BrickHeadz model to date and I would certainly recommend it.

By in Slovakia,

Looks like Stewie as Darth Vader from the Family Guy Star Wars specials

@cselenka I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Kinda wish all these Brickheadz sets could get reviewed in one fell swoop. They're all too similar to really warrant separate reviews IMO.

I love this one!!!

By in Netherlands,

I'm sure this idea has popped up before (surely, right?), but these things would be a much more attractive proposition to buyers if they included a minifigure of the character they portray.

By in Bulgaria,

This might end up being my first Brickheadz, I really like it!

By in United States,

Honestly, my first thought on seeing this was that it reminds me of the Vader Pig from Star Wars Angry Birds.

I can't help but think it looks like Stewie Griffin in the Family Guy Star Wars episodes.

By in France,

Sorry but even if I'm getting used to BH range and even like more and more of them (JW, BTTF, coming Yoda and Rocket Raccoon for instance), and even as a huge Lego SW fan, I don't like this rendition of Vader. I think the global shape of the front of the helmet does not work. And I don't like the global shapes of the Stormtrooper. Even as a growing BH fan.

@cselenka @legoavenger14 @wattybricks
I told BrickHeadz design lead Marcos Bessa that Vader made me think of Dark Helmet from Spaceballs, and he said he thought it looked more like Stewie's Vader--so even Lego sees the similarity!

He looks so cute.

By in Germany,

I agree with everyone who thinks this is Dark Helmet, not Darth Vader.
Mer-chan-di-sing anyone?
;-)

And may the Schwartz be with you!

By in Switzerland,

Jesus Christ this looks more horrific than Vader's charred ballsack :D
Generally hate these but this might be the worst one yet

By in Netherlands,

I agree with kickasstodon: all these separate brickhead reviews is dull. one review with all of them is sufficient.

Holy-midichlorians, Sidious! That's the worst rendition of Vader I have ever seen!

It just gets worse the longer you look at it.

What were they thinking...?

I think I must have missed a press release, I can't remember seeing these before? Ah well still very cool!

I’m not even the biggest Brickheadz fan so it’s strange to defend them. It’s a Brickheadz Vader. If you don’t like the design you probably don’t like the entire design concept. It’s that simple.

As for reviews, a group review makes no sense. Part of the review is focusing on new or printed parts, which is specific to each set.

The execution of each set design is interesting to me, no matter how minor and whether or not I plan to purchase the set. This applies to themes I don’t even care for. It’s part of the hobby, and at least for me, why I enjoy the site.

I get that they aren’t a widespread hit, but this isn’t a poll for the Lego group. They will or won’t continue to make them.

Happy building everyone. :)

By in Spain,

Lord Vader does not deserve this offense...
"Go Brick Me" is the only one BrickHeadz set you really need. Everything else looks repetitive and bored, IMO.

Love it? Hate it?
I love it.

I like them. I have both this and the Stormtrooper one and they are - currently - the only Brickheadz I own or want to own. Possibly. For me, the block nature of the heads doesn't quite work for people, and yet it does for these two. Maybe its because the helmets are odd shapes already...

I'm a Brickheadz collector. I collect certain ones and generally I like the fun proportions, but this Vader is terrible.
Sorry to the designer but it should've had a more built out mask. The prints are excellent but you can break the rules and shape, carve out a better more elaborate mask/face.
Obviously such an iconic character gets this rendition is a big fail. But, if it's a matter of size and parts restrictions, I get it.
There's a larger version from tanKM on flickr that has the shaping and roundness on the helmet that I thought Lego would try to get on this regular sized Brickheadz. I know tanKM's is a bigger build but I was hoping Lego would capture some of that look and build. https://www.brothers-brick.com/2018/05/04/darth-vader-brickheadz-is-a-larger-than-life-character/
