Ideas Showcase

It has been two months since my last Ideas Showcase article and since that article was posted I wrote about the new look for LEGO Ideas.

As always, I regret that the time between posting my Ideas Showcase articles is too long.

In this article I showcase nine Product Ideas projects. Read on to see whether you agree with my suggestions. I am always wanting to read your feedback and, this time, I am also interested to find out whether the new LEGO Ideas website has improved your experiences.

Voyager

By LuisPG

I share LuisPG's memory from the beginning of the eighties: I watched the television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage by the late Carl Sagan.

LuisPG has created many Product Ideas. His Voyager project has 1500 supporters but has less than five months to get to the 5,000 supporter milestone.

I'll leave you with Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot Quote: Consider Again That Dot. The link takes you to an image of Earth taken from Voyager 1 at a distance of 6.4 billion km (about 4 billion miles).

The Old Workhorse - Traction Engine

By Bricked1980

This is Bricked1980's only Product Idea.

It has an uncannily similar resemblance to a Fowler traction engine at a museum close to where I live, MOTAT.

This project is doing quite well with over 1,200 supporters. Pledge your support if you would like to see a LEGO minifigure scale traction engine.

Calypso Helicopter

By manganoid

This is a Hughes 269b/300 helicopter from the ship Calypso captained by, of course, Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

This is manganoid's only Product Idea project.

This model reminds me of a modern, updated version of the Technical 852 Helicopter from 1977.

The Calypso Helicopter Product Idea will need a boost soon to get it to the 1,000 supporter milestone.

It has over 600 supporters with just short of ten months to go.

Vostok 1 - The First Manned Spaceflight

By Graupensuppe

Over the years, LEGO has produced many models based on NASA rockets.

Let's not forget that in the late 1950s and early 1960s the Soviet Space Program was ahead of the Americans during the height of the Cold War.

Graupensuppe has modelled an accurate version of Vostok 1 which carried Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into orbit in 1961.

Vostok means East in Russian.

The model is 38 cm (15 inch) tall which is at a very similar scale to last year's 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V Ideas set.

This is early days for this Product Idea but I can see this project gathering some solid support.

LEGO Galactic Exploration Rover Vehicle

By GBailey46

In another Space themed Product Idea, although this time Classic Space, is GBailey's Galactic Exploration Rover Vehicle.

I can see some enormous play value in a set such as this rover vehicle.

GBailey has several Product Ideas projects underway and they are mostly based on the Classic Space theme.

This project has just over a year to archive 200 more supporters to reach the 1,000 supporter milestone.

Dwarf Dogs

By ZiO Chao

This is reminiscent of the 31021 Furry Creatures released four years ago.

I like how these small dogs have been created using LEGO.

The five dwarf dogs are:

  • Doxie - Dachshund
  • Corgi - Pembroke Welsh Corgi
  • Frenchie - French Bulldog
  • Puggie - Pug
  • Basset - Basset Hound

This is ZiO Chao's only Product Ideas project. At over 1,600 supporters it has a stable following.

Clockwork Aquarium!

By mjsmiley

Mjsmiley has created a ingenious Product Idea with the Clockwork Aquarium!

At over 4,300 supporters there is every chance that this Product Idea will reach the next milestone: 5,000 supporters.

When you turn the little hand crank on the side the fish 'swim' around and the crab and starfish move.

Please watch this one minute video which shows the full potential of this creative project.

Micro Worlds

By ZacharyA1999

I am always amazed at what can be created at the micro scale and Micro Worlds displays three themes: a castle from the medieval ages, a modern city and a futuristic Mars base.

ZacharyA1999 has several Product Ideas projects underway but Micro Worlds is by far the most successful.

It has 500 supporters and just over a year to get a further 500 supporters to reach the next milestone: 1,000 supporters.

Walking Dinosaur

By DansBrickBuilds

This is a refinement and re-post of an earlier Product Ideas project that Dan designed a while ago.

DansBrickBuilds has just under a year to get 500 new supporters for this project to reache the 1,000 supporter milestone.

You have to see the video to get a feel for the full potential of this innovative model.

So here are nine Product Ideas projects to have a look at. Two of these projects are very dynamic so please look at their respective videos.

I am always interested in your thoughts. Which projects do you like? Do you agree with my selections?

Has the new LEGO Ideas website has improved your experiences?

Feel free to leave feedback and links to your favourite Ideas.

By in United Kingdom,

Like the Micro Worlds, they're really well done.

Favourites the steam engine though. Its simple and very effective, and would fit a variety of settings for people just by changing the mini-figs.

By in United Kingdom,

I like all of these, finding it difficult to pick a favourite - I think top 3 would be Micro Worlds, Traction Engine and Dwarf Dogs, but good luck to them all!

With regard to the new website, I find it a lot easier to search and navigate - the old one was quite frustrating sometimes, not very intuitive, but impressed with the new version and have spent more time looking than I usually would :-)

By in United Kingdom,

Why does this review not contain any links to the projects themselves, either in the titles, pictures or text? Only the author's name is a link.
Bizarre.

By in Australia,

I was just about to say that I don't much care for any of them ... and then I hit the clockwork aquarium (that looks neat) and the Micro Cities. Nifty.

By in United States,

I supported all of them, because they are great.
The Old Workhorse Traction Engine is a perfect set, and it would be great for a lot of people's collections.

By in Netherlands,

I feel like any more space related stuff like the Voyager and the Volstok (despite being a nice build) is too much. The Ideas theme is saturated with space stuff imho.

The dogs could be a nice follow up on the birds set.

But the acquarium is what truly screams 'Ideas'

By in New Zealand,

@ Joefish: Thanks for pointing that out. I thought I put in the links when I wrote the article but something must have gone wrong. Fixed now. :-)

By in United Kingdom,

I like the Vostok, as the author mentions it describes the other half of the space race, and I think as a vehicle its distinct enough in colour and styling to differentiate it from the Saturn V. Personally, I would love an entire range of vehicles covering Gemini & Mercury missions but I think they could become a bit too similar, i.e white/black cylinders of varying proportions.

By in United States,

The Vostok looks sooo good. I saw it on Ideas a while ago just after it was posted. It's really taking off. I'd love to see it on the shelves.

By in United States,

I'm always thrilled to see one of your "Showcase" articles, because you always present such a diverse collection of quality models. This seemed a particularly fine selection--I supported most of them, and liked them all! Thank you for keeping me posted on the latest and greatest from Ideas.

By in Turkey,

Very nice selection of creations. My favorite has to be the fish tank. I can see it on my display. I wouldn't mind having others too though.
