By in United Kingdom,

Glad to see a new rebel trooper, even if it is in a juniors set

The Death Star escape is really neat, and the dewback is real cute!

I'm surprised we are already back at Kashyyyk, but those battle droid look really nice

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

those X-Wing and Tie Fighter sets are fantastic for little kids, if my nieces were any younger I'd be snapping them up for birthdays.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are those TIE Fighter wings one piece?!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You know the gun turrets on top of the AT-APs seem to get larger and more cluttered every time Lego makes a new one

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I want the Tie Fighter for the Death Star schematic alone, if it’s printed then it’d be perfect but a sticker will be fine too. But I Love the Death Star escape vignette scene. Easily replicated with the Death Star set but I’d love to see more mini-scenes like this depicted in sets, hope it sells really well to encourage similar sets in the future.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

These are amazing! Can't wait to get all the battle packs and micro fighters!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Tie wings do look as if they are single pieces, can't see a whole lot joining the plates together otherwise.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Death star escape is a bit expensive, but the stars for me is the dewback - it makes me want a scaled brick built one!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's annoying that they put Chewie in the AT-AP and Tarfful in the gunship this year. In 2014 it was the other way round and I got the gunship but not the AT-AP so I missed out on Tarfful. This year I'll have to get the gunship again to get him.
Can't wait for Inferno Squad battle pack. I was hoping they would do it.
PS the TIE Fighter reminds me of the old ones from the early 2000s

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

finally an updated rebel trooper!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Adorable dewback is adorable.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why, why, WHY, WWWHHHHYYYYYYY???

Why are you making 2019 such a poverty-inducing year, LEGO??

Best Microfighters yet, and a great direction for them.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I actually really love that Naboo fighter.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Interesting to see this swerve to sets targeted at younger ages, despite Disney and TLC's ages-long neglecting of that audience.

Could it be Disney is worried young children by and large fail to connect to the Star Wars brand, in part due to its mishandling since George Lucas was bought out? It's honestly pretty intriguing. It's not like other Disney properties weren't used for sets for the younger age range previously (Cars, for one), so something must have spurred them on to suddenly go for this approach....

By in Canada,

With the exception of the prequel trilogy sets and the Battlefront II battle pack, these sets look horrible. I don't collect prequel trilogy so I will be saving a lot of cash this wave.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Also, I'm not sure we needed a battlepack that reminds us of that abominable EA Battlefront game. Terrible, terrible campaign. Including a helmet for Iden Versio alongside her hairpiece would have made it more palatable than the unappealing package it is now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Regarding the "normal" sets, this is one of the weakest Star Wars waves ever, honestly. Only the Escape Pod vs. Dewback set is really good.

Death Star Escape looks decent, but too small. The battle packs and the other microfighters are very unimpressive, with the only highlights being the minifigs.

Finally, AT-AP and Droid Gunship again? At least, if they looked really different from the previous sets, alright. But these two looks almost identical to the previous ones, this is sad.

About the 4+ sets, I know these sets are focused on the young, but that X-Wing set is awful. TIE Fighter and A-Wing looks pretty, but the X-Wing is terrible, could be better.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

For an AFOL, pretty weak wave.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@CapnRex Inferno Squad BP includes 3x inferno squad agent, no hask/del etc. Just 3x same torso same head unfortunately.

The Droid gunship design has actually changed quite a bit! I like it. But overall the wave seems not what we'd have hoped for.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I feel like that's the 20th A-Wing that they've released.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Happy to see smaller versions of starfighters for the ones with less money fattening up their wallets.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

I'd like to hear what more 4-5 year old kids think of the 4+ sets, they're the only opinions that really matter regarding those sets.

Some of the children where I work (kids hospital) are pretty jazzed about them. The youngest opinion I've heard was from a 2 year old who pointed at the X-Wing and said "Daddy!". That sounds like an endorsement to me :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Dewback and escape pod are the first microfighters to make me say "cool!"

The X-wing and Death Star escape look nice. Good to see original trilogy representation!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really dig the dramatically improved Droid Gunship and the Dewback/Escape Pod Microfighters. The rest don't interest me and the AT-AP looks 92% identical to the 2014 one.

I hope they have something great cooked up for the spring/summer since it's the 20th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Meh, to the lot of them from me.
The only interesting bit to me is the new 18x14 (?) wedge plate used for the TIE fighter wings. That's one massive, and probably very MOCable piece.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m probably not going to be getting too much from this wave, but the sets are far from bad. The Juniors sets looks much better than in the prelims and I’m sure younger kids will be enjoying them; they’re just not for me and the majority of the people on this site I imagine. The Microfighters are a good cheap way to get young Anakin, Maul, Threepio, and Artoo, but I already have all of these characters, so no real drive for me. (I do really like the new Sandtrooper though).

The battle packs are great, but I can’t help but feel that they should’ve released the Inferno Squad battle pack like a year ago, when the Battlefront 2 game was first coming out. (Hopefully some of the recent updates will bring back attention to this game). I love the Death Star Escape and will definitely be picking it up. Finally, there is a cheap way to get classic Princess Leia and it also comes with the new Stormtrooper helmet mold. It’s also interesting that they give Luke Skywalker a white version of TLBM belt piece to better differentiate him from the Tatooine Lukes that we’ve been getting in recent years. The Droid Gunship looks great, but the minifigure selection doesn’t interest me. Same with the AT-AP, and its lack of screen-time does not help its case. Maybe if there is a very significant discount, I’ll consider picking them up, but otherwise, I’ll pass.

Overall, I’m content just buying the Death Star Escape and both of the battle packs from this wave.

By in United States,

Cool sets. The at-ap and Gunship looks cools
.the Death Star escape is also good.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

The micros are pretty cool, definitely getting the Maul one, and possibly the dual pack
Definitely getting both battle packs

Dont understand why LEGO keeps making AT-DPs and droid gunships, do they sell super well or something? At least the gunships appear a lot in TCW, but neither of them are important vehicles, and the AT-DP especially only appeared for like a minute as background

The junior sets are cool for a young audience, I might pick up one or two for minifigures, the builds themselves are meh for me, but I'm not the target audience anyway

By in United States,

Capn, there was talk about a Resistance Transport release from TLJ to come with Leia, Lt Connix, Nien Nunb - have you heard anything on that? Has that been scrapped?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does that escape pod microfighter not have stud launchers or flick missiles? How is it supposed to be a micro"fighter"?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Added 75229 Death Star Escape, 75233 Droid Gunship and 75234 AT-AP Walker to my wishlist. By the way, that new Battle Droid print is super lit!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The "fight" between C3P0/ R2D2 an the Dewback just consists of them all walking in the wrong direction anyway, no need for any stud launchers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Four members of Inferno Squad? Are they including Seyn Marana, thereby acknowledging the various books, etc. sources of canon and opening the gate for more relatively obscure characters from said other sources of canon? Squeee! Gimme Momin and Mr. Bones!

@Golem25: While LEGO Star Wars stuff targeted at younger kids is new territory for LEGO, Hasbro has had Playskool Star Wars Galactic Heroes playsets for a while now (similar to the ones they have for stuff like Transformers and Marvel), as well as Star Wars branded Mr. Potato Head sets. I've also defintely seen a fair number of Star Wars board books, though some of these are arguably more for the benefit of nostalgic parents who want to introduce their kids to Star Wars than kids who are expected to enjoy the Star Wars brand on its own merits.

As for why LEGO is only now making a concerted effort to reach that market, it could be because they're warming up to the idea that kids in that age range can enjoy "good vs. evil" fantasy play in a healthy way much like older kids can, or because they feel like a greater need has arisen due to the increasing complexity of many of the more iconic Star Wars ships (the original 7146-1 TIE Fighter was aimed at ages 7-12, while the new 75211-1 TIE Fighter is aimed at ages 9–14), or just due to feedback from parents about their younger kids wanting Star Wars sets even though they're not yet experienced enough to build them.

Of course, there HAVE been Star Wars sets aimed at a somewhat similar age range in the past — most notably the 7159-1 Star Wars Podrace Bucket, which used mostly basic bricks and was targeted at ages 5–9. But evidently it wasn't enough of a success at that time for LEGO to follow up with more stuff like it.

@BlueStation: I don't know anything about those rumors, but I do greatly suspect there are probably other Star Wars sets for the first half of 2019 besides these that we haven't seen yet. $60 seems rather low to be the peak price point for a Star Wars first half year wave (I suppose it's possible that the $130 Darth Vader's Castle might also have been designed alongside this wave. but even then I'd be a little surprised not to see any sets at price points in between that and the AT-DP).

Anyway, some nice designs and new directions being taken here, but little that interests me enough to want to get it. Episode III/Clone Wars vehicles don't have anywhere near the same nostalgic value for me as Episode I and II stuff, and generally I haven't bought Star Wars sets in over a decade except for the buildable figures or the few playsets that REALLY hit my nostalgia buttons like 7962-1. Just as well because pretty soon there's going to be plenty of LEGO Movie 2 and Ninjago: Legacy stuff calling my name, not to mention some of this year's Ninjago stuff from my wish list that I've been waiting for the right time to pick up!

Dark blue ice cream cones in Droid Gunship

Gravatar
By in United States,

I haven't bought a single microfighter in the past, but I gotta get these. Great sets here.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the use of the Lego Batman Movie belt piece for the stormtrooper belt luke wears in this scene. It really clever

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely gonna have to get some Praetorian Guards.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Finally! I've heen waiting to see luke with a belt for ages! Now I just need another for han.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Those TIEs and A-wings look almost small enough to where you could build a carrier ship for them.

According to Wookieepedia, the TIE is 7.5m in height and a minifgure corresponds to a human 1.82m tall, so a TIE should be 4.12 minifigures in height. Most Lego TIEs are way too big.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@CopperTablet: While that may be true, it's often way more difficult than it might seem to effectively scale things from human-size to minifig-size based on height, because compared to humans, minifigs' height is a lot less relative to their width. So especially for stuff like door frames or vehicles that a minifigure has to fit inside comfortably, a version scaled according to height alone is often much too small.

Also, building a sturdy structure around a minifigure can require greater wall thickness than building a sturdy structure around a person, considering the latter can use thinner parts with sturdier materials and more secure fasteners. A lot of people criticized the Nexo Knights Battle Suits (https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Nexo-Knights/subtheme-Battle-Suits) for having such a specialized cockpit/torso element, but it'd be extremely difficult to make a sturdy cockpit that fully encloses a minifigure at such a small scale using more standard bricks.

By in Germany,

Love that Dewback! Besides, neither the PT nor the Junior sets are really made for me. The Death Star set is not really on the same level as the Dagobah set, but it's alright. Strange step about renewing those Stormtrooper helmets, but still not printing the hip piece. Lego has a history of making strange decisions about Stormtroopers. Changing the FO ones after just 2 years, or not offering battle packs for years and years in the past.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The sandtrooper on dewback looks cool. And the Praetorian Guard battle pack is of course a must-have for the minifigures. Apart from that, this wave seems pretty uninteresting to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will say that the only sets that interest me are the microfighters, the battle packs and the Death Star Escape set. I think it's a little early to remake the droid gunship and the AT-AP. Also, I'm way too old for the Juniors sets, but honestly, that's alright. At least I like a few sets of this wave. I guess it means I save more money for the Ninjago and Lego Movie 2 sets then.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Lego AT AP just blew up my wallet.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That droid gunship looks cool, especially with those new droids. I might get the 4+ tie, it doesn't look that bad, and it is way cheaper than the tie for the solo movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A low cost, minifig-scaled TIE... THANK YOU, LEGO! You finally brought out a set I'll buy three or four of, so I can have them as props for roleplaying games. There are some "rerun" sets here, but taking things out of print forever only helps speculating re-sellers and people who want to buy a set and then say "neener needer" to people who didn't have the chance to buy that particular vehicle or figure the first time. Now if only they'd bring out the Hovertank again, maybe with an alt build or two so that rather than being a "tank" that is set up as a flat bed prime mover you have an APC or an actual tank/cav vehicle built on the same frame.

I"m liking battle packs, but what I really hope to see later next year or the year after is origional trilogy Stormtroopers with no officers or "specialists" other than a Scout with a speederbike.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't care about your "video games"...
PRAETORIANS.
MORE Praetorians.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I just think these are really boring compared to the space games from the 90s. See 6939 Saucer Centurion.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

This is such a fun time to have a 4 year old! I get to buy sets for him! He'll love the new 4+ range! (may be boring for adults, but that isn't the audience!) :)

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I only have eyes for the Inferno Squad Battle Pack but that Dewback looks adorable, it's interesting that we are getting SW Junior sets and I am also willing to see what happens next.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh, look yet another AT-AP and Droid Gunship...bizarre model choices. Meanwhile, a new TIE Interceptor/Bomber are ridiculously overdue...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Great sets for Star Wars minifig collectors! Want, want, want!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh my! I have to get the Death Star Escape.
The battle packs, juniors A-wing and micro fighters are also really interesting, but the others I'll pass.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the praetorian guard set! what an awesome moment that was in the film!
Those Kashykkk battle droids are epic too! (I love battle droids!!!!)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

While I like the opportunity to get a Droid Gunship, it is a bit stupid, that it contains the minifigs(Yoda an Chief) that where in the AT-AP the last time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really dislike Juniors sets. From the outside they seem quite attractive, with detailed and sometimes unique minifigures and printed parts. The models often don't even look too bad. But then when you have one in your hands, you realise it's just a bunch of oversized bricks that are too unsightly and unwieldy to use in your own models, and too large to store anywhere neatly.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Mm, not really impressed with this new wave of star wars sets. Maybe the Elite Praetorian Guard Battle Pack and the dewback have my attention a bit. But I'm not really excited. Perhaps a good thing, so I can get some more sets of the current wave of sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Death Star Escape is pricey for what you get—and the grappling span is so short — besides the anchor point not being central, which is the point of a swing— they could just jump it.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Maybe LEGO should submit it's own set plans through Ideas from now on...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A Microfighter that isn't: The escape pod and BUILT dewback are practically almost to scale!

There seems a growing divide in designs to cement 3 basic target customer groups. Before Juniors and Expert/ Collectors sets all sets had a generic appeal and worked together. Now there are clearly JFOL (KFOL), TFOL and AFOL set designs.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@darthsutius: That'd be pretty pointless. Ideas is generally aimed at getting forms of consumer-driven ideas that are outside the scope of existing themes — the sort LEGO can't come up with via the normal forms of market research for sets aimed at their core audience.

If Ideas sets tended to be anywhere near as successful as Duplo, Star Wars, City, Friends, Ninjago, etc, then LEGO would absolutely use that type of crowdsourcing more extensively. But the reality is that Ideas is usually better at generating products for an older-skewing audience that is considerably smaller and more niche than the KFOL crowd that these sorts of sets are aimed at.

If Ideas sets are more appealing to AFOLs than these more mainstream themes, that's all the more reason to doubt that the Ideas support/approval process would be better at generating sets for mainstream audiences than a more conventional approach.

@CamberbrickGreen: I mean, in the Star Wars theme at least, there was never much of a time before Expert/Collectors. Not only did the first Ultimate Collector Series Star Wars sets only come out in like the second year of the theme's run (2000), but they coincided with some of the first "advanced models" type sets that would now likely be released under Creator Expert branding: 3450-1 and 3723-1.

And it's not really as though sets targeting the Juniors demographic are a particularly recent thing either — it's just the sets aimed at 3+/4+ audiences used to be limited to basic building themes like Basic/FreeStyle/Creator/Bricks & More, and "beginner" System themes like Fabuland and Jack Stone/4 Juniors that had far LESS compatibility with the themes those kids were expected to graduate into.

In other words, from the early 80s to the mid-2000s, beginner builders fresh out of Duplo were targeted with figure styles like the Fabuland figures, "finger puppet" style Basic figures, and Jack Stone style figures. Intermediate builders were more or less the only ones targeted with minifigure-scale sets. And advanced builders were targeted with sculpture/model-style sets that lacked minifigures altogether.

Now, however, beginning builders, intermediate builders, and advanced builders can all enjoy many of the same themes, with similarly sized figures, covering a range of different levels of complexity suited to their particular skill levels. How is that current situation worse or any more divided by age range than it supposedly was "before Juniors and Expert/Collectors sets"?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A lot to like in here, the new battle droids, Luke's belt, the Praetorians and their amazing arsenal of weapons ...
Something for everyone, surely.
My little girl's not into Star Wars but if I was six years old again I'd love any of these and want them all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm surprised that they didn't make any MicroFighters for Solo; I feel like the AT-Hauler vs the Conveyex train would've been good, also both of the landspeeders in MicroFighter form. The Droid Escape Pod and Dewback seem like strange choices for MicroFighters, but at least they look to be decent builds so I'll pick them up.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

@Golem25 what's the deal with toxic SW fans and their need to insert poorly-thought-out criticisms in unrelated threads? Stop. Take some time to look at yourself and figure out what made you like this.

Gravatar
By in Japan,

Are those new prints on the OT Stormtrooper helmets? They look deeper (more bordered) than the fare we have gotten recently.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Japanbuilder I believe it's a new mold, in a similar style to the patrol troopers. There's more discussion of it at Eurobricks; pretty lukewarm reception it seems. A little cartoonish.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I actually like the junior TIE fighter as it looks the most accurate of the three sets. I just cannot afford main sets like the Solo TIE fighter anymore. The price of Lego Star Wars sets just keep getting worse. The junior set is a more sensible choice.

The junior X-wing design is the worst though. Lego should've left out the laser tower so more pieces can be crammed into the X-wing instead. The canopy part alone from the 75218 X-wing would've made it so much better. It's only worth buying for the minifigures, especially that new Stormtrooper helmet.
