By in United States,

These look awesome! Nice to see the theme returning to it's past. My favorite is the samurai mech, but I also really like Cole's earth driller as I had the original set.

By in Australia,

I do like the small Samurai mech and the golden dragon ... but, and I say this with much love, but have they just started to run out of ideas?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Liking the look of these. Any idea what the cylinder devices are for?

By in United States,

As a fan of the first few seasons, I am beyond hyped for these. The samurai mech is dissapointing, but the golden dragon looks better than I was expecting. The three largest sets all look fantastic. This wave is a Ninjago fan’s dream come true! I just can’t wait to see the ultra dragon that wasn’t revealed yet. All aboard the hype train!!

By in United Kingdom,

@Zordboy to be fair, this theme has been going for 8 years now; I guess you can only stretch the idea so far, especially when you have to draw inspiration from a TV show in the process.

Personally I think these new sets look great. I wonder how many other old sets would benefit from a refresh like this.

By in United States,

Cool, wasn't able to grab a couple sets like these when I was younger, can't wait to snag these if I can.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh wow, I'm most hyped for the sets with things from the show that never had show-accurate toys, such as the giant Stone Warrior or the smaller Samurai Mech from Rebooted (which I believe is what that set is trying to evoke) and especially the Spinjitsu Monastery.

I also like that with the ones which are more remakes of old sets they've gone for taking inspiration rather than a direct translation of the original designs.

By in Norway,

@CapNrex101 great job on adding the links, saw other sites just rushed out the images without context.

Makes sense to “mine the gold”, and let new kids explore the early seasons. Especially with streaming the archives easier than getting the new seasons way later than the sets are dropped ...

By in Canada,

Jay's Storm Fighter looks awesome! I'm not a Ninjago fan, but if I was to get a Ninjago set, it would be that fighter

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Do we know uk prices for these?

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I really hope these are THE last sets of this theme. I want to see something new from a new theme!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The new spinners are super cool.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

As someone who doesn't know the slightest bit about the source material, I only judge the sets by their general looks and whether they appear to be of interest to me.
Going by that metric, I am not very interested in, let alone "hyped" by any of them, as they seem far less inspired to me than many recent ones. The Storm Fighter looks cool, and the Monastery will go nicely with older temple sets, but apart from those two, I say "Meh" to this wave.

By in Finland,

Oh no, does this mean Ninjago is ending? Oh well, it had awesome run and maybe my wallet can rest at last. By the way, first half of 2019 is gonna be really hard for my wallet as Ninjago, Overwatch and the giant of Lego Movie 2 are almost all must have for me and my brother... and all of the sets arent even revealed yet like Avengers 4!

Gravatar
By in United States,

They all look great, though I think that the skeletons look hideous and the Golden Dragon's legs look
kind of weird.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

I don't know, they're all solid builds, but are all kinda boring. And there's no antagonist builds at all. And why do we have to have a set with two motorbikes every year?!?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don’t know why people keep thinking that Ninjago is ending. The show creators and Lego designers have given no indication that the theme is going to be cancelled anytime soon. It continues to perform well, so we’ll continue to see the adventures of Lloyd, Kai, Nya, and the other ninja for years to come.

I think the sets are great improvements on the originals. The spinners look great and are also improvements on the ones from 2011-2012, even if I most likely won’t buy any of them. I will definitely be picking up the Monastary, Golden Dragon, and mini Samurai Mech from this wave.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There a reason we’re getting Ninjago Greatest Hits this year around?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Zordboy: Nah, I don't think I'd say that. For one thing, repetition is pretty normal in any theme that's really successful and lasts long enough. But also, this "Ninjago: Legacy" wave seems specifically aimed to celebrate the milestone of Ninjago reaching its 100th episode with its upcoming four episode special event/TV movie. 100 episodes is a big deal for any TV show, especially a kids' animated show, and so it's nice that the designers are pulling out all the stops. As a bonus, this opportunity to revisit some of the most iconic stuff from the first two seasons both makes those sets more accessible to people who didn't get into the theme until after season two, and brings them up to date with modern design standards.

@TheOriginalSimonB: Those handles are designed so you can attach a figure or a Spinjitzu tornado to the end with the studs. There's a wheel on the bottom of that end, and by rolling the edge of it along the ground the figure or tornado will rotate to swing their sword. So sort of like the type of play features that were in the LEGO Sports Gravity Games sets, Hockey sets, and LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Lightsaber Duel set in the mid-2000s, but with a more brick-built design that doesn't depend on bulky, expensive, pre-assembled parts. It seems like a really clever way to introduce a new style of play we haven't seen in previous Ninjago sets!

@TransNeonOrangeSpaceman @Squicman: Last we heard from its Creators, Ninjago is still extremely popular and isn't going anywhere anytime soon:

https://twitter.com/TommyAndreasen/status/1021274712960192513

@Hexx: I've seen an interview somewhere (I forget where) where the designers talked about how sets with two motorbikes tend to be really popular with kids.

Anyway, overall I'm super impressed by this upcoming wave! The Golden Dragon and Samurai Mech are perhaps a little underwhelming consider their greatly reduced size compared to the originals (though still fairly good designs on their own merits), but I am REALLY glad to see that the new Storm Fighter and Blade Cycle not only live up to but arguably surpass the 2012 originals in terms of both looks and functionality, since one of my biggest disappointments with subsequent Ninjago planes and motorcycles was that sense that they never quite measured up to the awesomeness of those two sets' transformation functions! The Earth Driller likewise maintains the function of the original while bringing a major aesthetic upgrade, as well as giving the Giant Stone Warrior (which previously only appeared in the TV show and as a minifigure in the Kryptarium Prison Breakout set from 2012) an appropriate set depiction!

The new spinners seem brilliant, being the most authentic depiction yet of how Spinjitzu is described and portrayed in the show and story, with the user moving so fast that they whip up a tornado of energy around them. It's nice to see them return to a style that can be customized after the Airjitzu, Spinjitzu Masters, and Dragon Masters sets that were less customizable and more geared towards indoor or outdoor stunts. Giving each set swappable attachments for Attack, Defense, and Speed modes is a really cool way of making sure each one has a decent building experience that doesn't feel as segregated from the actual play patterns of the spinners as the weapon stands in the Spinitzu Masters sets or the elaborate weapons of the Airjitzu sets.

And of course, the Monastery of Spinjitzu is amazing to see! It's far more authentic to the Monastery's appearance in the show than the original set the show version was inspired by, https://brickset.com/sets/2504-1/Spinjitzu-Dojo. It's got some great play features to represent the Monastery's training equipment, including the use of the new gear plates also seen in The LEGO Movie 2's Party Bus. Like many past Ninjago locations, it's got really beautiful architecture using creative techniques that we haven't seen in previous sets. And while it's light on en

By in Australia,

Okay, so we don't have UK prices yet, do we have any idea on prices? any guesses even?

@Aanchir Light on what? It looks like you were cut off there.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I have the original storm fighter and I have to say the new one is really well done.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Overlord! That giant stone warrior! It’s a good time to be a Ninjago fan.

To those talking about the series ending, I doubt it based solely on how the last series ended. There’s another dark force coming apparently, and it’s most likely the Oni. Admittedly, that series could be the last, but for now this legacy stuff is in no way connected to it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Similar to the Day of the Departed, early 2019 Ninjago wasn't going to release any new on-screen content, so the sets take focus from all around the timeline, which personally is my favorite kinda wave. UNLIKE Day of the Departed, no half-assed money-groping holiday special is gonna be released to try to fill the gap.

These sets don't look perfect: the Golden Dragon and Samurai Mech, while cool for sure, are undoubtedly inferior to the models they're based on.

Also, this wave can't seem to make up it's mind on whether it's going for more detailed versions of old sets, or unused concept art. Both would have been fine if Lego stuck to one. Together, it's a little weird.

Specifically, the ninja minifigures, which are wack. They seem to be based on the drawings Tommy Andraesan does on his twitter page, which don't translate well to actual plastic. Updated versions of the ZX suits would have been SO much nicer.

But despite my negativity, I'm overall happy with this wave.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@AgentKallus: Oops! I hate when that happens. That's what I get for making my posts so long. Picking up from where I left off…

…while [the Monastery of Spinjitzu is] light on enemies, it's nice to see that it includes all six ninja.

As far as the figures go, I have seen some disappointment that they are all re-imagined versions of the ninja and their foes rather than more show-accurate likenesses of the classic characters/figures. But I actually quite like this since show-accurate versions would feel pretty redundant after the figures from the 2011–2013 who were mostly show-accurate to begin with. Also, I suspect that the new ninja costumes at least will be used for the upcoming four-episode special event/TV movie, which will be telling a new story while also bringing back some of this stuff in order to tie in with the sets (for example, an upcoming Ninjago chapter book description on Amazon suggests that the Ninja will be rebuilding the monastery, which was destroyed in the second episode of Season 1 and was last seen in ruins at the beginning of Season 7).

As for the villains, the Skulkin generals are a mixed bag… I feel like not having their boots or armor takes away some of their original personality, but I like that they now have a more standardized head that is compatible with a wider range of minifigure headgear. I'm not really sure what to think of the Serpentine, either, since their new torso designs suggest a more human-like rather than snake-like musculature. If these were the first versions of them I saw, I'd have no problem with them, but while I appreciate the uniqueness, I do think I preferred their previous portrayals. But the Stone Army figures look great, with some new face prints/colors and headgear that will be fantastic for collectors who want to diversify their armies. I appreciate that their ranks (Scout, Soldier, and Warrior) also remain recognizable. The Overlord seems to blend attributes of his Season 2 and Season 3 portrayals to amazing effect. While not show-accurate I have no complaints about the changes. And Garmadon? Well, Garmadon mostly looks the same as he did in Seasons 1 and 2, but with some of the updated printing from the movie wave… and that's fine by me!

Really excited to see what's still to come. One set I know is coming and that is rumored to be a Target exclusive is a redesign of the Ultra Dragon from https://brickset.com/sets/9450-1/Epic-Dragon-Battle, something I've hoped to see since the Destiny's Bounty and Ultra Sonic Raider (2012's other two standout builds) were redesigned with great improvements in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Overall it's amazing to see such a beautiful celebration of how far Ninjago has come since it first began!

@PsychicTempestZero: Err, from my understanding there WILL be new on-screen content for Ninjago in the first half — a four-episode special event counting down to the 100th episode, which according to Ninjago's creators has also more recently been edited into a TV movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The monestary, Storm Fighter, Earth Driller, and Spinjitzu sets are perfect. The rest are meh. I do like the new figures, other than the skeletons.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

From what I can see, the new Jay’s fighter has a really vintage control console! Nice sets btw.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A full scale Giant Stone Warrior, a proper recreation of the Monastery, and spinners that actually look like they're tornados? SIGN ME UP!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's like watching my childhood come back to life! THOSE NEW SKELETONS YESSS

Gravatar
By in United States,

Another interesting thing to notice is on the box art for these sets (I've seen on a few other sites, not sure Brickset's put them up yet) the Pilot Season set (70670) is listed as "Season 1," but all the Season 1 and Season 2 sets maintain the proper markings. Then again, the Monastery was in Season 1 and the Skulkin made reappearances then too so who knows.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Cool to see the giant stone warrior finally get a set! It's been a long time coming! In the words of a true legend "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one".

Gravatar
By in Norway,

70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu looks great! Will work nicely as a starter for an sushi-ish restaurant in Ninjago District.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These look awesome! I'm surprised at how many pieces are in the Cole's Earth Driller set. I hope these are reasonably priced because I really dig most of them, and I like the new parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dang that update to Jay’s Storm Fighter is something else. I have the original and this looks amazing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

These look pretty good! A little disappointing they didn't use the original face guard piece for the stone warrior minifig, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, I will say that this is the first time in a long time where I want all the sets. I think it's a great idea to return to the roots of Ninjago and revive sets from that time frame, allowing for newer fans to get into the sets. Personally, I think the last few themes of Ninjago were OKAY, not counting the movie, but I think it's a wonderful idea to bring back these sets in an updated style. I'll probably get at least a few if not all of these sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Slight problem with the Jay’s Storm Fighter Nya was not a ninja during season 2. Other than that the sets seem fairly good the golden dragon doesn’t look as good as the original.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm most interested in the spinjitzu sets. I just wish the used the original suits for the ninja, and samurai x instead of ninja Nya.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know that a lot of these are rebooted versions of older sets. Don't care- I missed them the first time. I hope the Golden Dragon is reasonably priced so I can build if not an army, a squadron of these dragons. The Samurai Mech looks good, as does the temple set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@checkmate05: These sets are inspired by earlier seasons but not strictly based on them. There are a lot of creative liberties taken either based on the preferences of the current designers or to account for changes and improvements since those seasons, like Nya becoming an equal member of the team, the ninja's faces being given a design update for The LEGO Ninjago Movie, and the introduction of an actual Ninjago writing system around that same time. Some other notable changes that might seem to contradict the actual chronology of the first two seasons:

• The Overlord's appearance in the Golden Dragon set more closely resembles his Golden Master depiction in Season 3 than either of the forms he took after possessing Lord Garmadon in Season 2
• Kai, Zane, and Jay are wielding or attempting to obtain their Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu in the same set as the vehicles that are transformed versions of the same three Golden Weapons
• Cole is wielding his Scythe of Quakes against the Overlord's Stone Army in the Earth Driller set, whereas in the show the ninja lost their Golden Weapons to Lord Garmadon at the end of Season 1, and they were more or less melted/destroyed one episode before the Ninja confronted the Giant Stone Warrior in the Museum of History, two episodes before the rest of the Stone Army was awakened, and four episodes before Dr. Julien and Nya constructed the Earth Driller.
• The Monastery has conspicuous murals on the courtyard's interior walls that reference the battles with the Serpentine, the Stone Warriors, and even Master Chen, none of which were visible or referenced in the show at any point before the Monastery's destruction.

Chances are some of these inconsistencies will be reconciled by the scenarios in question re-contextualizing things from both past and future episodes of the show. For example, as I think I mentioned, the monastery is apparently going to be rebuilt at some point after the resolution of Season 9 according to an upcoming book synopsis on Amazon.com, and I expect the ninja's gold dragon patterned costumes will be new ones for the upcoming four-episode special event and not a re-imagined version of any of their Season 1 or 2 outfits.

Whether the returning enemies and vehicles appear via dreams, flashbacks, etc. or actually make new present-day appearances in the show by some means remains to be seen.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Probably only pick up the the Monastery.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this Ninjago's version of bionicle stars? and if so, does that mean it could be ending?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is an interesting idea for a wave, but it doesn't quite feel right to me. If it was a celebration of the theme at its end (and an end would be welcome by now-- a story shouldn't continue solely because it's still making money), I'd be fine with it. But celebrating 100 episodes? It just feels a little self-congratulatory. Like "Oh, we're such a long runner now, look at what we did, and we're not stopping by the way, just showing off". Maybe it's just that I don't agree it should have gone on so long.

I won't argue with a cheap set that gives us a cooler Overlord, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've been saying since 2011 that skeletons were the best thing that ever happened to NINJAGO, so I'm thrilled about this. The other sets look really cool too.

I don't like the brick built spinners though. I was hoping we'd get real spinners.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I remember collecting the spinners with my brothers at the start of the Ninjago line. I have to get them all.
Good to see sets based on the early seasons, which were probably my favourites.

Gravatar
By in Jordan,

I can't see a single" bad" or even "meh" set here, but 70667, 70668, and 70670 look especially nice!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m confused. Are they time traveling again?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Double J Bricks could be that, or maybe this is what the past looks like now thanks to the time-traveling that turned the Ninja into doppelgangers of their movie universe selves.

I think these sets are pretty cool for the most part, especially the brick-built Giant Stone Warrior. Still a few things I would say are missing from the line though. The Overlord's Dragon form, Garmadon's giant samurai mech, the Leviathan, and the Grundal would all be good candidates from the years covered by these sets. Were we to get into later years, more Elemental Dragons and a set of the Preeminent would be nice as well.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@ewokswithbricks: Just to clarify, the spinners aren’t brick-built and are “real spinners”. The tornado shaped elements in the pictures above are the spinners, and the rest of the parts are display stands that hold both the spinners and the Attack Mode, Defense Mode, and Speed Mode add-ones that you can clip to the handles on the sides of the tornado elements.

The box pic shows a little more clearly what the spinners actually look like in action:

By in United States,

It's probably because I don't watch the series but is Cole's Driller that big or is the Stone Warrior that small? I get cost efficiency comes into play but the proportions don't seem right. Some of the builds look refined but the only at that interests me is the monastery.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This wave reminds me of Bionicle Stars in the sense that they are paying homage to past waves of a fan-favorite Theme and some of the set remakes are smaller/not as good as the originals.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@MTBrickHouse: Watching the series wouldn't really answer that question most likely, because the Giant Stone Warrior never appears in the same scene as Cole's Earth Driller, or any ninja vehicles for that matter. That said, Cole's Earth Driller in the show WAS pretty big, to the point that it was able to carry https://brickset.com/sets/70500-1/Kai-s-Fire-Mech folded up on its back. For reference's sake, here's a picture of some concept art for the show's version of the Earth Driller, with a minifigure shown for scale: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5e/75/a6/5e75a6aa3ef6c9e6271b4680bfd6181c.jpg

@SaberSlash99: I'm not sure whether it's fair to make that generalization. The Golden Dragon, the Samurai Mech, and possibly the Blade Cycle are the only two builds that are smaller or less detailed than the ones that preceded them. The Snowmobile, Storm Fighter, and Monastery are considerably bigger and more detailed than the original set depictions of those vehicles/scenes.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Star Wars Fan: Yep. Brickset usually doesn't post box photos in articles or add them to the database until the sets are released and stuff like box photos or alternate images can be pulled from LEGO.com directly, but as a result a lot of major details are easily overlooked in new set discussions. Until this stuff shows up on LEGO.com, you can find lots more pics on sites like The Brick Fan, Flickr, or YouTube.

I love the look of Cole’s Earth Driller and I don’t even consider myself a fan of the Ninjago theme.
