Review: 40348 Birthday Clown

The first of this year's seasonal BrickHeadz are now shipping from shop.LEGO.com in Europe, having been on back order for a few weeks. Mine arrived yesterday.

After the unsustainable glut of BrickHeadz that were were bombarded with last year it seems that output has slowed to something more manageable this year. Currently we know of no others apart from the seasonal ones but the numbering of those suggests there will be more.

Before I take a quick look a 40348 Birthday Clown, I'll list the numbers of the 2019 sets that we know about.

  • 80: 40354 Dragon Dance Guy (available now)
  • 81: 40349 Puppy (available now)
  • 82: 40350 Chick
  • 83: 40351 Ghost
  • 84: Presumably an unrevealed Thanksgiving set, 40352
  • 85: 40353 Reindeer, Elf & Elfie (Reindeer)
  • 86: 40353 Reindeer, Elf & Elfie (Elf)
  • 87: 40353 Reindeer, Elf & Elfie (Elfie)
  • 88:
  • 89:
  • 90:
  • 91:
  • 92: 40348 Birthday Clown (available now)

If rumours are to be believed, we will be seeing BrickHeadz versions of The LEGO Movie 2 characters, so if that is the case they may well occupy the 4 unreserved numbers and be revealed or released soon.

Anyway, on with the review...

40348 Birthday Clown must be the most colourful BrickHeadz ever released! I count eleven different coloured elements, and those are just those that are visible. Despite that I don't think he looks too garish!

He's also one of the few human BrickHeadz to have a nose.

The flowing curls of his orange wig look great at the sides but no effort has been made round the back so from that angle it looks very plain and dull.

In common with other seasonal BrickHeadz this one comes with an expanded display base. The left of it is occupied by a couple of balloons, while a table with cupcakes and a birthday cake, complete with the new candle pieces that first appeared in last year's Harry Potter set, is on the right.

This year, the printed tile on the base indicating that this is a seasonal BrickHeadz has been dispensed with.

The 2x4 tile is decorated with a sticker. The sheet contains about a dozen stickers with Happy Birthday in different languages.

You would hope that this set will have a bit of a longer shelf-life than most BrickHeadz given people have birthdays all year round, but that remains to be seen. So if you're planning on buying it for someone who has a birthday later in the year you might want to grab one now while you can.

I was in the Leicester Square store yesterday and an employee told me that Brickheadz are being discontinued. They are just going to keep selling their existing stocks, and also the planned seasonal ones for 2019, but that's it.

They could have at least added a 2x3 plate on the back of the head to give it a little more texture / shape.

They really nailed this one I think. There's something completely unsettling about his dead visage, just like a real clown.

I grabbed mine January 1 so I wouldn't miss out. This clown is one of the first Brickheadz I've built in a long while but it is so colorful I wanted to have it on display.

I also got a second copy in case I wanted to try my hand at making it into Pennywise. Not sure why I would want to look at that all the time though.

If i bought this it would just be for parts,
Very nice colours and interesting elements like the balloons and candle stick, lego could of added a clowns horn or a water squirting flower also the happy birthday banner should of been a printed Tile..

@brewemj They said the same to me in the Leeds or Sheffield store (I forget which) a week ago. As they also told me this year's Seasonal Brickheadz were for "later in the year", even though I'd already ordered them online, I'll not rely on that info alone!!

I think this is a great Brickheadz model overall, as this one of the ones that really caught me eye when the new 2019 seasonal wave was revealed. As Huw said, there are a ton of colors, particularly bright colors, although I don’t think they clash too much, as it’s intended to be bright and cheerful. I think they did a great job of capturing the look of a birthday clown, without any prints or stickers for the body. I love the relatively rarer parts, such as the candle (introduced for Harry Potter), and the balloons. Interesting to note how they didn’t include the ‘standard’ seasonal, numbered Brickheadz base. I don’t particularly like the way the back of the hair was, as I think it should have been rounded, or even just tiled over. I also must admit, that until Huw’s review, I totally though that the ‘Happy Birthday’ sign was a print - alas.....
However, this still looks like a really awesome set - so colorful and fun looking!
Can’t wait to pick this great little set up, as it will pair quite well with the Iconic Birthday Table Decoration 40153 I already own.

@brewemj, I really hope that isn’t true. Unlike most of the Lego fan community, I love these little guys and to see them disappear would be disappointing. Luckily I know of a store where they have a few of he original (non comic con) Brickheadz.

Oh I am interested in the Dragon Dance guy.

Anyone else think the candle is grossly ill-sized when compared to the cake?

I think this wave of seasonal brickheadz is the best we’ve seen yet. This not excluded. And I like that it is more than just the figure, but it has other scenery around it.

@kyrodes:
Yes, that's totally what it needs. That's a great idea. They really should have used the balloon dogs/animals from the CMF Series 18 Birthday Clown...

They churned out BrickHeadz way too fast IMO. Great for people that love them but I feel that they got quite lazy with the design and image. Would have been better to have 50 or less and have them a lot better quality and thought out in more detail.

Edit: Just to add comment I do really like this Clown one, think its pretty good

By in Canada,

Like many others, I just can't seem to get into BrickHeadz.
However, I'm wondering if I'd be willing to give them more of a chance if LEGO had just spelled it with an 's'. Maybe I'm just biased against lame attempts to sound hip.

That being said, this clown design is pretty dope. For realz.

I'm definitely in the minority, but I enjoy collecting the BrickHeadz series. I also think they went a little crazy with them last year:

2016: 8 San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives that were unnumbered.
2017: 22 total including 4 San Diego Con Exclusives and 2 New York Con Exclusives. (16 retail)
2018: 56 total! (All retail)

As a collector, keeping up with these things is getting tough...

Was there really no way to make the thing smile?

^ Really? Do you really want him to smile?

Relevant Deep Thought of the day, by Jack Handey:
"To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kinda scary. I've wondered where this started, and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus and a clown killed my dad."

I just wish that these Brickheadz sets had been available to buy for longer than they were. I missed out on Marty & Doc, Venkman & Slimer, and Luke & Yoda because I thought it would be some time before they were discontinued. The Luke & Yoda set was available to buy for only three months. Three months?! What the hell is going on there, Lego?

LEGO wanted to deviate from the classic smiley face minifig head because their kid focus groups thought they looked like zombies; then LEGO come out with this. LOL!
