Review: 853875 Sweet Mayhem Pod
Posted by Huw,
853875 Sweet Mayhem Pod has not yet been listed at shop.LEGO.com but it is now starting to show up in brand stores and I picked one up in Leicester Square after seeing the film on Saturday.
Sweet Mayhem is one of the new characters in the film, although not the most outstanding (that's the queen). However she is certainly going where no Friends figure has gone before. In the two boxed sets she appears in, 70824 Introducing Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi and 70830 Sweet Mayhem's Systar Starship, she's kitted out with a funky space helmet and suit. They are not included in this set but her fantastic sparkly hairpiece is.
Some pods are packed in polybags but this one, and 853874 Emmet Pod, the other TLM2 pod, are in blister packs, which to me at least make them less collectable.
Like many of the other pods this one has a lenticular image on the front, which in this case shows the film's title from one direction and Sweet Mayhem in her space suit from the other.
Among the handful of parts are the new 1x1 heart tile and 3x3 heart plate. I'm not exactly sure what it is that they build but it looks quite cool and colourful. I think the black dishes are speakers.
The Sweet Mayhem mini-doll in this set is unique (from BrickLink's cataloging point of view) in that she's not kitted out in her space suit but I believe she's otherwise identical to that in 70830 Sweet Mayhem's Systar Starship!.
Her hair is exceptional. It's produced from a soft material and finished with a shimmery, glossy paint that reflects different colours as you move it about.
She can sit in the left hand side of the pod and do whatever it is she does in there.
Pods are a great way for kids to carry their favourite figures around with them and I am sure Sweet Mayhem will have a lot of fans when she's been seen in the film so this is bound to be a popular little set, once it's more readily available.

It is a good way for people to get a striking character without buying a big set. Lego is very good at making the minifigs available at different price points for families. The heart pieces are sure to be popular, especially this month.
*oops....and minidolls..
Isn't it exactly the same figure as in 70820 LEGO Movie Maker?
I want this set
No it isn't the same as in 70820. In 70820 is without armor but with head with raised eyebrow like in 70824. This one has the same head with smile as in 70830 but is without armor and helmet. There is one more print variant of her face in 70834 with angry expression. So this is fifth variant.
1. Raised eyebrow, helmet, armor - 70824
2. Smile, helmet, armor - 70830
3. Angry, helmet, armor - 70834
4. Raised eyebrow, without armor and helmet - 70820
5. Smile, without armor and helmet - 853875 (Pod)
I like this. I want this!!
^^ Thanks
I agree, the build in it does look “quote” cool and colorful. This character is probably my favorite minifgure/mini-doll from the movie.
This is a nice idea i bought my daughter the Emma's ski pod where she wore an exclusive outfit last year,
This would of been more sort after and special if lego put an exclusive space suit on sweet mayhem maybe in black or metalic blue.. I, m getting the queen watevra set soon followed by the ice cream cone one..
I do like that blue hair-piece.
@Huw there are several typos or spelling errors.
"Some pods are packed in polybags but his one," believe its supposed to be this one.
"I'm not exactly sure what it is that they build but it looks quote cool and colourful" believe it should be quite cool and colourful.
^ Fancy a job as a proof-reader? :)
Fantastic review, Huw! But worth pointing out, Sweet Mayhem does actually appear in THREE boxed sets (four if you count the Movie Maker set although, much like this pod, her armour and helmet aren’t included in it), I think you forgot about: https://brickset.com/sets/70834-1/MetalBeard-s-Heavy-Metal-Motor-Trike!
Quite possibly my favourite of the three facial variants!
In the LEGO Shop I'm sure this was labelled as Sweet Mayhem's 'Disco Pod'. I assume the bit at the top with the stud on is some sort of mini dance stage. Not sure what the foot-grip at the bottom is for as she does look odd sitting down. And I'd expect the speakers to face inward if it was some sort of dance stage.
Also, never noticed her heterochromia before.
As cool as Sweet Mayhem is, she does creep me out just a teensy eensy little bit with that pink face of hers - especially when you take her hair off...
Also, @Huw, I believe I see a new modified 1x2 rounded plate attached to the one side of the pod, and is a new piece for 2019, (which debuted in the Corner Garage modular building)....
I love her hair I need to buy a set with in as soon as I can, I love these pods but £8 is a bit pricy for less than 30 odd parts a figure and a big piece of plastic
The new heart-shaped pieces are very interesting....when I saw those were some of the new pieces for 2019, deep down inside I thought, "why would they make a brand new pieces that have such limited use?"
Oh, how wrong I was! I'll just say I took it all back, when I saw how in just2good's review of the Chinese Dragon Dance set, they recolored them, and used them on the dragon to make a beautiful pattern! Sorry to rant!
^ Yes there are two of those but I thought they were released last year.
@Fatoran, I was going by BrickLink's inventory data when I wrote this but it turns out not all the TLM2 sets have been inventoried yet, so thank you for the clarification.
You midsed fact the small build is her flyingboard.
I hadn't seen the character without her helmet until I saw the photo show up in the news feed here...so minor spoiler. I think it's probably best that I stop looking at this site until after I've seen the movie on Thursday. I already know too much.
I'm happy to learn that she reuses the face print from 70824. Every one I've acquired (in 70824, 70830, and 70834) has had a different expression, so I was thinking this one might yet again. I haven't seen any sign of these at my local Lego Store, but at least now I won't stress it. It's a cute set if you have a kid who likes the character, but I don't really have any interest in these pods.
