LEGO Top Gear set on the way
Posted by TheBrickPal,
Something interesting has been announced today: a LEGO Technic set based on the long-running BBC series Top Gear! Find out more below, via License Global:
BBC Studios has signed a deal with The LEGO Group to launch the first-ever LEGO Technic set inspired by the series “Top Gear.”
The set will be geared for children, ages 9 and above. It will launch globally in early 2020. As a Technic set, it will provide a more-challenging build and include real-life functionality designed after its real-world car counterparts.
“We are extremely excited to have partnered with LEGO Technic,” says Jason Easy, head, licensing, U.K., BBC Studios. “Both brands enjoy a very close relationship with their fans; it’s certainly a natural fit for both, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the LEGO Technic set hit the shelves next year.”
“Top Gear” is one of television’s longest-running motoring entertainment shows, spanning 42 years. It has a following of an estimated 350 million viewers globally, across 200-plus territories, making it one of the world’s most widely watched factual TV programs. The latest series of show features Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris as they explore car culture in the U.K. and abroad.
In the licensing world, “Top Gear” previously partnered with Assured Products.

Technic Fig Stig please!
There's been all kind of wacky vehicles in Top Gear that would possibly be fun to see as a Lego model (and then maybe not). Let's see what they come up with; I suspect something rather 'normal' or 'boring'...
There was a Stig keychain
https://brickset.com/sets/THESTIG-1/Top-Gear-The-Stig-Key-Chain
Got to be the indestructible Hilux
aw man hope we get may, hammond, clarkson figs
@Mica: I haven't seen Top Gear in years, but the new cast after Clarkson was really rather harmless, despite trying hard...
After Overwatch, F.r.i.e.n.d.s. etc. I think we are beyond what TLG always touted as their "family-friendly" hypocritic policy.
They probably won't do minifigs at all, let alone of the famous three, as they are no longer part of the TG family. I suspect they will give us something like the Hilux or some other vehicle seen on the show. Technic Suzuki Liana anyone? Oh no, that was a reasonably-priced car. Something we haven't seen from Lego in quite a while...
;-P
If its not the proper Trinity, I'm not interested. They've partnered up too late for it to sell well I feel.
Plus, with all the 'blokeiness' and swearing etc on the show, it seems that Lego is realising that its 'family friendly' policy is holding back potential sales.
Although I like Top Gear and LEGO, I don't see the need to combine the 2, same with Forza although that was a tie-in with the Forza Horizon 4 add-on DLC.
Is it just a reason to add some money to the purchase price for licensing we don't really need?
Top Gear haven't really created a car as such, apart from daft customs they've A-team built for amusement. Maybe we'll get a destructable caravan or something?!
I'm sure I'll buy it anyway :)
I hope we get some of the conversions Top Gear have done, like the Toyboata.
Perhaps its the Hovervan or the Reliant Rocket or the Top Gear Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust!
I hope it’s minidolls.
It is an app controlled rally car. £125 . Released 1st Jan (so pre christmas in most shops)
It looks pretty awful I'm afraid. The battery box/receiver is sited where the seats should be. Dont get too excited
Wow, that's anachronistic. Top Gear is so old-hat, backward, irrelevant and unfunny it hurts my head just trying to think down to that level. I don't think anything about Top Gear will help sales and any association with Clarkson is a bad thing IMO.
Technic LEGO doesn't need this license, I'm sure the sets will be excellent and would sell without it.
This is what a backfire sounds like.
If Top Gear still had Hammond, Clarkson and May, I would be really excited about his. Now I'm worried. Well, I'll go watch some Grand Tour
The world is wating for a Toyota Pickup destroying set! With all the iconic stuff they used - a shore, a caravan, some fire, a skyscaper with TNT inside, a tree, a production office, a wrecking ball, a stairway....
I guess everybody would buy this set and will have a lot of fun... perhaps you should not use the fire...
by the way - these three guys were absolutely crazy...
I don't see the point of this. I forecast a spectacular failure.
LEGO Track-Tor?
That would be so cool!
Partnering Technic and Top Gear is a great move.
Again Lego seems right on schedule, picking up a license 5+ years past its prime. I mean, the Clarkson/May/Hammond era had so many legendary vehicles, like the Caravan Train, the iHammerhead, Shuttle Reliant, the camping cars, not to mention the Hovervan and all the other "amphibious but rubbish" cars that all could be great minifig sets. With the new hosts the show became gentrified, family-friendly and boring (just like most entertainment today), I haven't watched it for years.
Between this and the LR Pretender, it seems to be the year of bogus car-related Technic licenses.
My eleven-year-old will likely love this set.
This came like 5-10 years too late.
The show just isn't the same now.
There's a video out there of May/Hammond trying to build a technic set, which is fun, but that was made earlier this year, when they already weren't on Top Gear anymore.
Discovered the TV show a few years ago when came TNT here. And I'm still a fan today. There are even French and American versions, but my favorite still is the original English one. None can reach and match the humour and English point of view of the famous trio... And the Stig! OK, it's now quite old, I would say vintage, but as good wine it goes better with years passing by IMHO. In a few words, I really enjoy watching old broadcastd of Top Gear, the original one. And I am now so curious and excited to discover what it will be like in Lego set form.
Whatever it is, it will be "Ambitious but rubbish" and have a Stig mini-fig, just as it should be in the usual Top Gear fine form.
Back in the day when TopGear was presented by the Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, who became the driving force behind the show, the entire format, the sort of humour they brought along, and the entire reason the show became as popular as it did internationally, I would have tipped my hat to TLG and thought 'wonderful idea to team up'. However, TopGear has become irrelevant, a total PC cringe fest, and just plain boring ever since the BBC sacked Clarkson. TLG should have teamed up with Clarkson,Hammond, and May over on 'The Grand Tour' instead.
Also why does TLG need this license for something they have already been doing on their own successfully for such a long time?! TLG makes outstanding Technic sets of cars etc. Partnering up with the BBC is a horrible idea!
Looking forward to seeing what they have come up with. This probably wasn't an option back when TG was a show about one bloke bullying his co-hosts while the audience pretend not to be a bit tired of the out of date predictable 'humour'. It is probably safe enough now for Lego to tie up although I am not sure what the point is.
I would've thought that anything Top Gear related would've shunted neatly into Speed Champions, but I guess it makes sense if they're using more Technic styles.
Lego planned on this licence back in 2012, but we only got the keychain. It's weird to be getting an official set 8 years after the partnership was supposedly canceled.
Wasn't something teased about this a long time ago? Honestly, I'm not all that interested. One, Lego (as with a lot of the licenses as of late) waited a bit too late. The branding would have worked well with what would become Speed Champions. But I'm not too sure about this set. Secondly, Top Gear just isn't Top Gear without Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Yet, "The Grand Tour" was everything Top Gear was with them, and more.
TLG is mistaken. The show is called 'the grand tour'.
In 2019, when climate change is everywhere, a BBC partnership would have made much more sense with involving Sir David Attenborough. A Creator line with buildable iconic and interesting animals close to extinction, with educational value added to the set and booklet. Or a City line which is park guards vs poachers.
I hope it will be sets based on old, good "Top Gear" with Clarkson, Hammond and May. For me present show on BBC, shouldn't be called "Top Gear".
Years ago they did a trailer for a new season of Top Gear using LEGO. I probably read about it right here on Brickset. My young sons and I had never seen the show but we started watching it after that and they loved it and all the Grand Tour episodes that followed. That was years ago, as several people above have pointed out.
Angela Rippon, Noel Edmonds, William Woollard, Chris Goffey and Tony Mason please.
The show is good. Lego is great. Lego sets of the show...I am thinking no. I would maybe grab The Stig minifigure, but I doubt any of these sets will make it to my collection.
Cool!
Its funny watching drunk communists attempt to do licensing deals.
Ya done messed up, Aaron, when you pretended people gave a flip about the name “Top Gear.” It was nothing before Clarkson, May, and Hammond, and it’s nothing after.
Get a clue.
I wonder whether this is intended to replace the Technic supercar line from the past few years (Porsche/Bugatti). Perhaps TLG hopes to bump sales by putting an IP license on it...
*** Still keeps fingers crossed for a Technic Ferrari supercar ***
There was already a Top Gear K‘Nex Partnership... and those didn’t sell to well at the time. They also came with a Stig Fig...

Not being an expert on how well the BBC has sold out its shows, how big is the Top Gear market outside Western Europe?
Hmmmm, curious, if its just a generic technic car (Power functions or not) that would be cheaper without an IP license then that would be pure profiteering.
I’ll sit on the fence for now, but I cant see it jumping to the top of my buy list.
I don’t think it will have any minifigs, I’ve never known a Technic set to include minifigs and even if it did it wouldn’t be Clarkson, Hammond and May as they are no longer on the show or associated with it.
It’ll be interesting to see the set though, it could be a multi model set that can be made into several vehicles that have featured on the show. It’s also possible that it could include the new control+ system with a top gear themed app to control it.

Not strictly minifigures but figures nonetheless...
Grand Tour X Speed Champions = all in
BBC Top Gear X Technic = not for me, sorry
Hovervan for the win.
Lego has gone a long way regarding licensed sets. And thus a long way into the completely wrong direction.
This may interest everyone: https://brickset.com/article/8677/lego-to-produce-bbc-top-gear-sets
Well, interesting setup.
1:1-scale Peel P50!
I'm not sure what this brings to Lego other than licensing fees that will show up in price tags.
Even though the version of the show with the trio was insanely popular both at home and abroad, I never could see the appeal. May is tolerable for short periods on his own shows but the other two...
But now they're gone the show is all but dead. So what's the point TLG? But who knows a good set may come out of it, stranger things have happened. Let's see what we get.
PS Someone mentioned a Noel Edmonds minifig, that would be quality, think of the "tidy beard" printed face!
Considering the last BBC partnership garnered very little product (Hello Doctor Who 1-11 and 14.) I suspect this will be a one and done set similar to Ideas Doctor Who. No need to get all bent out of shape over it.
Also funny how "too late" this is - again. Just like Overwatch.
I stopped watching Top Gear after they lost Clarkson, Hammond, and May. If Lego put out a set that did a good homage to the real Top Gear team and not the worthless programme that came after the trio left, I'd be interested in it.
Clarkson, Hammond, and May minifigs in a studio with the demolished Hilux, the lap times leaderboard, and other popular bits would be pretty swell. Especially if the Hammond minifig used the toddler legs that don't bend, to make him shorter than the other two lol ;)
too bad it won't include clarkson hammond or may figs since they cut ties with the bbc.
The scope of my engineering genius literally knows no bounds.
Due to www.promobricks.de the new TopGear set (42109) will be a rally car:
I translated the below text automatically for you with Google translator - it's a litte bit to early for me to do it myself... ;-)
LEGO Technic TopGear Rally Car (42109) with Control + control
As we have learned, the said cooperation set is a LEGO Technic TopGear Rally Car (42109), which will be available from December 27, 2019 as part of the first LEGO Technic Innovation Wave of the first half of 2020. The model consists of 463 parts and also includes components for the new Control + control via App. The RRP is 129.99 euros.
Unfortunately there is no official picture material yet. However, we can tell you that this is a white sports rally coupe with some stickers (including one with "The Stig" and the UK flag) and lots of headlights at the front.

463 parts for 129.99 Euro. And Control+ with control via app.
Some say that LEGO licensed sets are overpriced and that they are unnecessary too.
All we know is... I'm out.
Plus, Top Gear after the "holy trinity" is just cringeworthy boring BS that doesn't even deserve the name.
Granted, Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May was also BS, but it was mostly funny BS, even for citizens of countries that were favorite subjects for Clarkson's ridicule ;-)
The Hammerhead Eagle I-Thrust.
I so want it to be the Hammerhead Eagle I-Thrust... I think that was the funniest show ever in TV.
