Friends Advent Calendar - Day 2
Posted by MeganL,
Day 2 of the advent calendar! We started off yesterday with a lovely heart. Last year, for the first time, the advent calendar had a gift that represented each of the Friends. It turned out that those days were days 2, 7, 12, 17, and 22.
From the looks of the door for day 2, we may have that pattern again. On today’s door there’s a musical note in flame yellowish orange, so that should represent Andrea.
Some of you may notice that unlike previous years we do not have pictures of each advent calendar door for the front picture. Huwbot has taken a fancy to the Friends doors and informed me he may want to use them for the Clikits calendar. Naturally, wanting to get in well with the boss being an agreeable person I offered to use the doors that CapnRex created a couple years ago. Thanks Capn!
Anyway, let's see if I'm right about today's gift representing Andrea.
Today’s build is what I call a boom box, though I think that just dates me. Others would probably call it a stereo. I like the use of the flame yellowish orange at the top to tie the build to Andrea.
There’s been a stereo included in the advent calendars before - it’s a convenient and easy build, even though it’s not necessarily holiday themed. It fits Andrea’s theme well, though, and the inclusion of a bar shows we have another ornament.

It's one of those stereos that you can plug your phone into. New-fangled technologies for an 80s kid like me, but I imagine the target audience will appreciate this. Not a bad build, either.
That middle tile looks nothing like a cassette.

Perhaps its a retro MP3 player :-)
its a ghettoblaster...
I asked my 9 year old daughter this morning what today's was, and she replied she didn't know.
I guess almost no one has these in their house nowadays...
For true retro style one can easily change that mobile phone tile for the real cassette tile ( https://brickset.com/parts/6257668/flat-tile-1x2-no-254 ).
And loads of people I know still have these things, albeit with mp3 and streaming functionality in addition to the CD and cassette player functions of old. Remember, especially small kids tend to still have loads of CDs and even cassettes with series of kids' plays/stories (Benjamin Blümchen, Bibi Blocksberg, Conni, Die drei ???, TKKG, Barbie, Friends, Filly, Disney, etc.), at least over here they do. Perhaps not in other markets though.
I mean I'd call it a boombox, Brickset calls it a "Ghettoblaster" and apparently people also call it a stereo.
Someone packed my daughters calendar wrong!
We got the [item] from day 18 today!!!!
So have got to wait 16 days for the ghetto blaster!
Although there is a smaller minifig accessory sized boombox, which is a bit more appropriately sized, this one isn't half bad either. Lots of good parts too.
Ghetto Blaster
Ok... that dates me too...
