Review: 40382 Birthday Set
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has produced a number of birthday-themed sets over the years. The latest one, 40382 Birthday Set, is a colourful addition to the series that is available now at LEGO.com and in brand stores.
It contains an awesome new minifigure that might be reason enough to buy the set even if it's not your birthday yet!
The set builds a three tier cake, lavishly decorated a variety of bright colours. I think some restraint would have been beneficial because it looks far too gaudy to me.
The new minifig stands on top, holding a flag and balloon dog. The top tier rotates.
A sticker sheet is provided to label the flag with the appropriate number for your/the recipient's age, and a second flag is provided if your age is in double digits.
The minifigure is attired in a shirt printed with multicoloured balloons, cakes, hats, streamers and so on while the new head print features star-shaped glasses and a broad smile.
The printing continues on the back, making it a very attractive torso.
So, a nice little set that would be gladly received by anyone on their birthday!
It's now available at LEGO.com for £11.99 / $12.99.
Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

As it has two zeroes on the sticker sheet there should be a third flag so 100th birthdays can be celebrated!
Only two flags included?! justicefor100yearolds
Prefer the old birthday cake with the popping clown functionality. Definitely like the brick built letters more too. Would’ve liked if they included 20 flags because right now this set can only be used for one birthday - if I’m 15 this year, next year I have to use one of my own flags for the “6” sticker!
To be fair most Classic Lego sets have an age cut off of 99...
Elton John headprint!
Love the figure.
Also overall nice parts used, including those candles, which so far haven't appeared that much in smaller sets.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw it!
@TheOriginalSimonB But the highest age rating on LEGO sets is 99, so they had to be consistent.
I would buy this just for the balloon dog even.
Timmy Mallet lives!
Love it and the old one too - both are great fun! I quite like a bit of birthday gaudiness though.

Funny, that was my first reaction too.
But try explaining to modern kids who Timmy Mallett was, or why kids back then loved his antics on Wacaday/Wide Awake.
Gosh, this brings back memories...

MOCers, please please retrofit that guy into a proper Elton John.
This really su..... Stickers???? Come on.... The old one was better in so many ways! The brick bulid numbers was so awesome. And you can change them so often you want.
Wow LEGO hates the 100 year olds. Some sets say ages 5-99 and this one can't accomidate the oldmen. Smh.
Yay for trans colours :D
This is cute and the minifigure has won me over. However, as others have said, it really isn’t very reusable to have stickers on a banner instead of brick built numbers?!? We have the previous birthday cake and use it for every birthday at home. I will put these stickers on 1x1 bricks instead, and will use pieces from it, and the awesome minifigure, to extend our current display.
Awesome set! I sepcially like the minifig. Honestly, I feel a better setup for the age flag could have been used--with one instead of two. But, given the small 2x2 flag, I'd say it would be hard to read that way.
At $12, it's a very reasonable value. Most sets these days at that size are $15, or even with some City sets these days, as much as $20-25.

'Sorry, grandma. You're 100 today so we have to take your LEGO away. Happy birthday.'
