LEGO Super Mario coming soon!

LEGO has announced the brand new Super Mario range in a short video on Twitter and Facebook!

Little information about these products has been revealed, although this video exhibits an unusual Mario figure with a digital screen in his chest.

You can watch the teaser video after the break...

Are you looking forward to LEGO Super Mario and what do you think the range might include? Let us know in the comments.

Let'sa Go!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This sounds really cool, but I don't see this being more than a few sets. Once the main characters are released, I feel like there is only so much you can do "scenery" wise. Still exciting though. Hoping for a Bowser big fig!

Gravatar
By in United States,

WAH-HOO! First Mario, next Splatoon! Just hope they do normal styled Minifigs, but with moded heads or hair.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

i want a bowser in his flying thingi!

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

Please no. Not another pointless license. First we got Trolls, then Minions, and now THIS? COme on LEGO, you really need to slow down with all those licensed themes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hope they make Kirby at some point

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ohhhhhhh, I don't know. I'd welcome link or and adventure game but I'm not so sure a mario theme. I'm think I'll pass on this one.

Is Super Mario still a thing? My kids play Fortnite. My kids and their friends never talk about this. Seems like this train has already left the station.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well my boys will be delighted. They love MARIO and Lego, gonna be a big hit in this household. Hoping for a great Yoshi

About flipping time! Pokemon is probably on the horizon.

Lego Mario Kart, collectable character karts would be nice

Super Mario Odyssey sold almost 17 million copies in two years. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is the best-selling third party game on Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 23 million copies and is the best-selling game on Switch.

Mario is a strong enough brand that there were K'NEX sets, a line of action figures, a Uniqlo clothing line, Vans shoes, and probably more mass-retail clothing options at stores like Target than at any time in Mario's history.

Even if not a single one of these LEGO sets are sold to kids, it's a strong brand that has every expectation of selling well.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

for anyone asking, the 1992 game "Super Mario Land 2" for the Game Boy features a level made of building blocks. That's surely a nod to that level.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I think that if this goes well, we'll see also some The Legend Of Zelda sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is gonna be an expensive year for me lol

I’m sooooo exited right now

Gravatar
By in United States,

C’mon Lego Zelda!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will be buying all the sets plus many duplicate sets too.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

@woosterlegos probably neither you or your kids or their friends have ever played any Nintendo game, but many other people did, including myself. So I would hesitate to say that it would fail

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome! I can’t wait to see the sets!

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

This is amazing. I have been fantasizing about a LEGO Mario theme since as far back as I can remember. Hopefully, they have actual minifigures instead of whatever the hell that thing is.

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

I'm excited for nintendo sets, but that Mario looks weird. I'll wait for more pictures

Gravatar
By in Italy,

@LegoDavid I see a particular pattern here. Both Trolls and Minions have been produced by Universal Studios, which is also co-producing the upcoming Super Mario movie, to be released in 2022. Probably Lego has partnered with Universal, but I wouldn't say that Nintendo is a pointless IP, given that it's one of the most recognized video game brands worldwide

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This has just made my day!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just thought of this, but what if they use the Dimensions toy tags and do LEGO Amiibo!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This has a lot of potential! I seem to remember K'Nex doing an interesting Mario Kart theme a few years back - although I can't see LEGO doing racetracks.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

okay, I can hear my wallet crying, since Nintendo games are sadly known for being a hella expensive (60€ for a first-party game)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the Minecraft theme really exhibited how well LEGO can implement a blocky/pixel theme that I think has a lot of potential for inspiring the direction of a Mario line. I am beyond excited!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'm grown up with nes, SNES and N64..... So shut up and take my money....

That level was made of Nintendo's long-discontinued N&B blocks. They were subject to a lawsuit by LEGO. There are still blocks in that line that LEGO hasn't made their own version of.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This should be interesting. I hope they have 'Boo', which is my favorite character. If these do well, could they do Zelda sets?

Gravatar
By in United States,

“And the times they are a changin”

I want to mourn for the good ole days of non licensed sets, but this is a great move for LEGO, a profit maker for sure. While I’m not personally interested, this will sell.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why is no one talking about the fact that the teaser video seems to show some sort of Lego figure with multiple built-in working screens/displays? That seems incredibly unusual and newsworthy to me.

My boys are massive fans of Mario (& Sonic), most of children at their school are too, the only ones we know that play Fortnite are the ones no-one wants their kids playing with (on account of their behaviors & attitudes, the game seems to encourage bullying).

Can’t wait!!!

Gravatar

I'm a bit concerned about the Mario figure from what I can see in the video.

Gravatar

This does bring a smile to ones face...

I hope they produce the princess, Yoshi those mushrooms and then hope to see Zelda & starfox and donkey Kong in lego form!!

Gravatar

Mario is the best-selling videogame franchise of all time and the latest main-series game has sold over 15 million copies, so yes, it is definitely a thing

Gravatar
By in Finland,

That figure looks really weird but I'm buying them all regardless of what they look like

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Hope this opens up to the rest of Nintendo's franchises. I like Mario but I vastly prefer the Zelda series, and I also want Star Fox, Metroid, Pokemon, Kirby etc characters to Lego form.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both Lego and Nintendo are big non-American companies with a red logo with white letters which end in o, are zealous about protecting their intellectual property (as said above Nintendo made the clone N&B blocks in the 60s and was sued by Lego, but Lego lost) Both companies market themselves for all ages and have a large adult following who grew up in the golden age of the 80s and early 90s. Lego and Nintendo have been my OTP (as far as multinational companies go) and I'm glad to see such likeminded companies with similar values work together. I think Nintendo worked with TT Games to develop Lego City Undercover, but not with Lego themselves. It's a smart move for Lego if they want to incorporate AR and electronics into their products so much, since results have been mixed for Lego while Nintendo is a leader in the field with such AR games like Pokemon Go.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego Pokemon pleeeeease!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This was unexpected, I wonder if we can expect other Nintendo series to have sets in the future as well. I think Mega Construx is still making Pokemon sets so I wonder how that'll work out if Lego wants to make Pokemon themed sets as well.

Ah yes, the good ole days when LEGO was bankrupt. Licenses are why we have LEGO today. If there’s no profit, there’s no company.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yes YES YESSSS!!!
Here's hoping this opens the door to Legend of Zelda sets in the future!

And of course memers are gonna love a Walugi fig.

On a slightly less series note: Hold on... could Chase McCain or Pepper Roni get into Smash? They *are* video game characters.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO, if you're listening, please give us at least one Legend of Zelda (w/proper Link!) set! Someone above mentioned Star Fox, oh the memories :) I'm just hoping for real Minifigures rather than whatever that is in the video. The integration of a small screen in the torso looks like a cool concept, but not something practical, and if from LEGO let's be honest, it won't be affordable lol. Some of TLG's recent acquisitions seem to have missed the mark, as in not a proper fit or just a couple years too late. If TLG is going to chase the current popularity trends (chasing the dragon is not something I think they should focus on btw) they need key folks in their marketing and research dept.'s who have a good pulse on trend curves and "the next big thing." If you all at TLG are still listening, I am willing to quit my day job :) As for their partnership w/Nintendo though... well done, now please don't disappoint us... we've waited a long time!

You track what games all the children at their school are playing? That sounds a little creepy to me. I have several nephews that play this game and they don't have any behavioral issues.

In line with the point of this article though I'm excited to see what they do with this theme and hope like others they expand to Zelda.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome but if the Mario figure in the video is the one that they’re using than I’m confused and slightly disappointed. It’s not terrible but the legs don’t seem to be articulated and a normal figure with the “teenage Harry Lotter”-sized legs and a molded head would make more sense.

Amen amen amen...

When I saw this news I literally screamed like a little girl, and that’s hard to do for someone who has a bass voice. I have been waiting for this for years. LEGO has just killed my wallet though. Between boba fett, the Fiat, and this, I’ll be in serious debt.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is awesome. My almost 12 year old daughter loves Mario (well she prefers Luigi - not sure why?). We may bond over this. My favourite is Toad. I definitely want a little Toad minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES! I had been hoping for this for ages and clinging to any sign of hope that it could ever happen. Back when Lego City Undercover was announced (in a Nintendo Direct with "Lego Iwata")... when Lego Minions was announced (thanks to Illumination also making the upcoming Super Mario movie)... and now it's finally here.

I do hope that that figure shown is some sort of specialty figure rather than the standard one used for all the sets. I had sort of expected that if this theme ever happened it might not use standard minifigures (since at the very least I'd expect molded heads like the Simpsons theme due to Mario's distinctive nose and moustache), but this one seems no less blocky than a classic fig while still not fitting in with other minifigure characters. But there's definitely things to like about this teaser too, like the use of masonry bricks for the Mario series' classic brick blocks. The Mario series is a great fit for Lego with features like castles, haunted houses, airships, and all sorts of other fantastical settings, and ideally it could also pave the way for other Nintendo partnerships like a Legend of Zelda set or theme!

This isn't a blanket "Nintendo" license. Pokémon would be licensed through The Pokémon Company, anyway, not Nintendo. Kirby would be licensed by HAL. Many of Nintendo's first-party franchises are actually partially owned by other companies, which may or not in turn be owned or controlled by Nintendo.

Gravatar

We need a real Star Fox set of minifigs (heck, maybe a whole CMF series of Nintendo) and a Yoshi

Mighty Micros style Karts could be a fun way to collect some of the characters

Yes, Mario is still a thing. Just on the Nintendo Platform. FORTNITE is on all consoles and they are completely different games. Im pretty sure Mario doesnt require parental settings, in game transactions for skins and a lobby that would make a nuns ear bleed. I myself, enjoy both genres but only play FORTNITE when the kids aren't around. You never know, this may kindle their curiosity into the Mushroom Kingdom.

Gravatar
By in United States,

For once LEGO gets a GOOD license where Trolls and Minions being fairly weak ones, Trolls is absolutely failing so far from what I see in my LEGO store. However, if the Mario theme figures look like whatever that thing is in the teaser, then this theme is probably going to be a flop... But if they make the right choices, this theme will be worth the investment hopefully.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

massive yawn,

I think it is time for another on of my dark ages. I mean, is there even any originality left in LEGO? Lego city has been horrible for years now and even Ninjago and creator expert have been a bit of a let down the last couple of years....

Gravatar
By in United States,

@stupibea_yahoo_com: Hidden Side? Dots? Whatever Monkey Kid ends up being? Not to mention mainstays like Ninjago, Friends, and City. It's tiring to see people complain about there being too many licensed themes every time a new one is announced, especially when so many of them (like the Minions and Trolls themes you mention) are likely to be one-wave themes that catch the hype of an individual movie release before disappearing.

@CopperTablet: Not only is Pokémon licensed TO a separate company (Mega Bloks/Mattel versus K'nex which previously had the Mario license), it's also licensed FROM a separate company (The Pokémon Company International, which is a separate entity from Nintendo). While a Nintendo partnership could pave the way for other Nintendo-owned franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and many others), Pokémon presents very different licensing challenges.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would much rather they revisit an old license like Lord of the Rings (which deserved far better) than these micro-lines...

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

@Legoman_John
I totally agree, Mario is huge and was huge especially in the 80-90’s, where a lot of us AFOL’s grew up.
Lego and Mario makes perfect sence. When you look at the graphics of the several Mario games, it’s kind of boxy and fits great with Lego bricks.

Can’t wait to see what they come of with.
- Minifigures?
- Brickheadz?
- Side scrolling scenes from the games?
- Individual sets, when put together makes a game level, with pipes, goombas, bricks and so on

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m going to be massively ticked off if we don’t get a massive airship.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The Mario fig looks to be 4 studs wide. If the turtles are proportioned to it, then this can be giant turtles for minifig scale. Nice!

I’ll only wait for the magazine with gift foil packs with Mario figs though.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Mario?
The last time my kids were interested in Mario Games was years ago. And what kind of sets is this supposed to yield anyway? Or is this going to be another video game?
But sure, bring on another pointless license instead of proper themes.
I'm drifting ever faster into another Dark Ages.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers
Mario games are still really popular, so it won't be a pointless license.

Gravatar
By in United States,

*facepalm* Lego's shooting themselves in the foot with this one. Clone Wars doesn't get it's own wave, Empire Strikes Back gets no 40th Anniversary love (aside from maybe an AT-AT), but Mario, sure, let's waste resources with another freaking license, instead of fostering the ones we already have.

Great if you like Mario, but infuriating when other themes are suffering.

Right, because Lord of the Rings is super hot right now

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mario (which I fully expect to expand to most Nintendo 1st title properties) is huge. I get the people complaining about more licensed themes, and maybe I'm biased, but this is different. This checks all the boxes: kid friendly, nostalgia, imagination friendly (think Mario Maker only with actual bricks), proven (Lego Minecraft sets; the huge legacy of Lego video games)... It goes on and on. This is the best match a license has had with Lego in a long time and I'm super looking forward to it!

While I’m happy for the Mario sets being announced, Amazon is launching a LOTR series next year with a huge budget. So it will be in the public again. A small wave wouldn’t be out of the question. Sauron, Denethor, Eowyn, plus maybe some of the characters from the series would definitely sell. Especially, if it were a limited thing.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@ra226: with Minecraft I agree, it was a match made in heaven for LEGO. I mean the game looks like it was made out of LEGO bricks to begin with.
But what kind of LEGO connection has any of the Nintendo games? Don't get me wrong, I loved playing Mario games from the original NES right up to current consoles. Same with Zelda etc. But I don't see what this has to do with LEGO or what a kid would want with those games in conjunction with LEGO bricks.
Rebuild levels? Collect figures? What kinds of sets is this licence supposed to offer?
I'm at a total loss to see any appeal for kids. The ones I know who love playing with Nintendo games have zero interest in LEGO - and vice versa.

Gravatar

the list of highest grossing franchises puts Mario at 9, if you don't have a Nintendo console then it would make sense you don't have Mario in your house, 'cause Fortnite's on just about everything, but Mario's still going strong and isn't going away any time soon.

Not sure what kind of kids you're interacting with but I don't think I've met a single kid who wasn't interested in both. I don't understand your argument at all. The appeal for kids is that it's Mario! The same appeal that comes with every other license! Also, rebuilding levels and collecting figures would be exactly what these sets would be about! Just like Minecraft! Just like every other theme. I don't know what gripe you've got with Italian plumbers but this is going to be a wildly successful theme as long as the figures don't look like that teaser. (Even if they do look like that, it'll still do very well because People Like Mario)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers I was (still am!) a Space fan since the early 80's. My mode of play was my space men in their ships going on adventures, getting in trouble, getting out of trouble. The ships and the minifigs provided the frame work, a place to start, to get the imagination going. Nintendo characters and sets would provide that same framework. Mario and his friends (and his enemies) have enough personality to provide that framework while at the same time not locking your imagination in a box (which I feel Starwars slightly does).

I believe Nintendo sets would provide just that right framework--open enough to leave plenty to the imagination, but with enough little constraints to give that imagination direction. I think that may be why Space appealed to me so much when Town did not. Space gave just enough direction to let my imagination get going.
What surprises me is how popular Overwatch sets are. I completely agree with your argument there--I'm not sure who plays Overwatch but who is also still playing with Lego (but clearly there are enough).

Examples of possible sets (and I'm assuming Zelda and others will eventually happen):
- SMB World 1-1 Flagpole and Castle
- Hyrule Castle
- A shrine from BotW
- Metroid Samus vs. Mother Brain (Metroid is a space theme begging to happen)
- New Donk City (plenty of stuff: i'd go for that stage with the jazz band on it)
- Odyssey Moon level (adorable moon bunnies? yes please!)
- An 8-bit level creator set (can you imagine the desk decorations for us AFoL's?)

I'm specifically going for stuff with kid play value here. If you go strictly on AFoL display value, there's plenty more. But I tend to prefer Lego stick to making toys, not display pieces so I'm hoping they go for more kid-aimed playable stuff.

Gravatar

What!

I actually turned my phone off and on again upon reading this. While I’m not much of a gamer myself, I’m quite excited. And it’s better than Trolls or Minions.

Can’t wait for Zelda as I’m also interested in fantasy themes like LOTR.

I just watched an interesting video suggesting that the Mario in the video is actually a case for a Nintendo Switch. They speculate that you can see part of the Switch sticking out between Mario's legs. This could explain how his teeth and question block are digitized, it could be some sort of interactive game. It's an interesting idea if it is correct. Below is the link to the video.

@AustinPowers , the appeal is most definitely there, I just don’t think you’re actually looking. You see it as another licensed theme you don’t care about, which therefore it means it’s terrible and has no appeal to anyone anywhere. Nintendo has been popular for decades, thanks almost entirely to Mario. Plus, a Mario/Nintendo Lego theme has been requested constantly for years and years. I don’t know how well it will perform, but I can assure you, the interest and appeal is there. More than many other licensed themes that have come out in years. Frankly I think you’re out of touch.

By in Norway,

@CapnRex101 - Could you please post some screenshots from the video, like was done for the Trolls article? Videos no longer plays in any of my browsers, so right now I feel pretty left in the dark as to what it's all about.

Even googling doesn't yeld anything more than a badly cropped thumbnail from the video - the only thing I can see are parts of the most gawd-awful, nightmare-inducing blocky figure with screens in its face, I can only hope this is just a part of the promo and not the actual product. Otherwise I feel Mario/Nintendo at least has some "evergreen" quality to it and a great potential, as opposed to the many short-lived bottom-of-the-barrel licenses (Trolls, Minions and Angry Birds) Lego's been wasting resources on lately.

When it comes to the N&B blocks, what I heard was that Lego didn't sue over the blocks themselves (as the patents had expired by then) but rather how the ads depicted Lego as an inferior product (even if they weren't mentioned by name). So Nintendo stopped those specific ads but continued making the bricks for a few more years, but in the end they weren't very successful. To me it seems like the system was hampered by a very limited part selection, the round parts (their main selling point) doesn't look all that useful and it seems like they didn't even have plates.

Seriously? Your problem with this is that Star Wars (Lego's largest licensed theme hands down) needs MORE attention? Easy pass here but I can see the appeal. Time will tell if this is a success. You can always tell which themes flop hard as they will be at Wally World for 50-75% off and I have a sneaking suspicion these will fall into this category. Cool concept but we shall see how they turn out if they are anything like the angry birds sets Nintendo fans can count on deep discounts.

They may be discounted, but I certainly wouldn’t compare an Angry Birds IP with Mario. 100% different animals, and some sets will sell simply so people can have a Lego Mario character. Angry Birds doesn’t have nearly the recognition as Mario, let alone the decades of games to back it up.

I'm surprised that it's 2020 and we still get these "Oh no, not another licensed theme!" complaints from AFOLs. What are you hoping for? More Hidden Side? Friends? CHIMA? Most of the most popular themes among AFOLs have been the licensed ones - Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter - and the others have been evergreen themes that have been around in some form forever - Creator and City.

I just don't quite get why themes like Ninjago or Hidden Side are inherently better / more appealing. Evaluating them case-by-case, sure, I get. CHIMA had cool figs, Ninjago has lots of interesting Asian architecture, Friends has great colors. But other than pricing, I guess, I see no reason to frown on licensed themes still. We've had them for 20+ years and LEGO has arguably only improved in that time period.

Ooh, add in the prequels and you get to pair up Ep1 with the theme every five years, Ep2 will pair with Ep4 (just 25 years behind, and Ep3 matches Ep5 (again, 25 years later).

I suppose if you really wanted to, you could also loop the Disney Wars flicks into this, but after the last couple movies a lot of people might be offended. I just finally got around to watching Ep9, and I’m pretty sure that, where Lucas borrowed heavily from The Hidden Fortress when creating Ep4, Ep9’s script was written by a drunk guy who was ripping off a really badly translated budget anime movie, and then Uwe Boll threw out every other page of the script while ghost-directing for JJ Abrams.

I'm entitled to my opinion, just as you're entitled to yours. Every new license steals resources from existing themes, not just Star Wars. I might have mentioned Star Wars specifically, but there are other existing themes that could use better treatment over yet another license.

@speedorz4ever Those helmets do not count. I'm talking about a dedicated wave of system sets, like last year's 20th sets, or even 2010's ESB wave.

Maybe not exactly like this, but I was saying that if other toy & merchandise companies are celebrating Star Wars anniversaries, then Lego should too. But no, instead we get three new licenses. I do hate to lump Mario into this sentiment, but that's how it is.

I think this is a license that has been done to death, and like Minions, another building toy maker has "Been there, done that" in the form of K'Nex. Tomy, Mattel, and Carrera, in addition to K'Nex have done it in the past 5 years. The Mario Kart Tomica models my Tractor Supply had sold badly; I was still seeing them in 2017, 5 years after my store stocked them, and long after the Johnny Lightning and regular Tomica models they had been sold alongside had disappeared.

Why not use some of the themes introduced in Dimensions? That way, you save money by using molds produced for those themes, minifig designs for that theme, and companies you've already worked with. I'd love to see a minifig-scale A-Team GMC van and KITT. Molds for the Gremlins already exist, as do multiple Doctor Who characters. We haven't had a full Ghostbusters theme, and the minifigs of Slimer and the Stay Puft Man are just asking for sets including them. Issuing a set with the Sonic minifig introduced in Dimensions near the time the film came out would have been a license to print money, I think,.

A-Team, Knight Rider, and Gremlins are far past their time, nowhere near the continuing popularity of the Mario franchise. You could maybe make a case for Ghostbusters but there's already been close to the maximum amount of GB sets. Doctor Who has fallen completely off the radar, as much as I would like to get a Tennant or Eccleston minifig. Outside of the movie (which didn't knock it out of the park), Sonic doesn't have much going for him.

Not to beat a dead horse, and all opinions respected, but those that can’t see the appeal or interest this has just simply aren’t looking or don’t want to believe. it would be interesting if the sets are based on certain Mario games like Mario kart and luigi's mansion
they would certainly be a lot of new moulds for the theme and bowser would have to be a big fig likely in a more pricey set like his castle

I was hoping for some sort of Mario-Maker level designer with a LEGO theme, but it looks like the giant figure shown is a dock for the Switch screen with holes in to show through an animated face and chest panel. Which suggests the interactivity of any application is limited to a simple novelty. Probably triggered by some sort of barcode or something contained in each related set.

Rather than a joint entertainment opportunity it thus seems more like just another licensed line of toys for LEGO, and for Nintendo, an opportunity to advertise their over-priced and under-specced console to susceptible kids.

Don't see what your issue is with what I said. There's a range of sets, but I don't see how there could be much interaction with anything playing on the Switch itself, if it's going to be placed in a dock that covers up most of the screen. The number of sets doesn't change that.

@Korpen4444 :
Sure, I get that. However, they've now celebrated the 30th anniversary of Ep4/SW in general, and the 20th anniversary of the theme. In a way, the release of UCS MF2 in 2017 could probably be seen as a nod to the 40th anniversary of Ep4/SW, since the UCS MF1 actually came with a "30th Anniversary" sticker ten years earlier. Not only are they terribly inconsistent to begin with, but they're skipping the bigger milestones. Traditionally, it's the ones that land 25 years apart that are considered more significant, termed silver (25), gold (50), and diamond (75), but we got nothing in 2002 (25th of Ep4/all SW), 2005 (Ep5), or 2008 (Ep6). We have to wait a bit to see if we get anything in 2004 (25th of the theme).

@AustinPowers :
So it's been pretty well-established by now that Germany no longer charts the path of The LEGO Company, and you're bitter about it. The thing is, the US has been enjoying the limelight for 20 years, and we're rather enjoying it. Themes that you complain about often do very well over here. However, which China on the rise, who knows how long it will be before they hold more clout, and how that will change the LEGO aisle going forward? From what Simon Liu told me, it sounds like Germany was just about maxed out on how much product they could purchase, and from what you've said it sounds like sales have really dropped off in recent years. Not that there was really a chance that Germany could climb back to the top of the pile, but any influence you guys may have still had is likely rapidly shrinking. You can accept that, or you can rail on about every new theme that doesn't fit your interests. But unless you become fabulously wealthy tomorrow and start buying LEGO sets by the shipload, you can't really change it. I guess I don't see what you're getting out of this, unless the goal actually is to have a bunch of people getting mad at you. Hopefully not.

@cody6268 :
Um...what? Sorry, "Tractor Supply" is not a name I would associate with the sale of video game paraphernalia. Like, _AT_ALL_. Anyways, SW Ep1 held the distinction of setting records both for being the most successful movie merchandising blitz of all time, and the _least_ successful of the same. It sounds weird, but the truth is that Phantom Menace both sold more merchandise than any movie prior, but due to the sheer quantity of oddball tie-in products (there was an entire warehouse full of unsold Jar Jar and Darth Maul neckties), there was just a ton of stuff that they couldn't move short of bulldozing them into a landfill. Right now SW merchandise is warming pegs everywhere, _except_ LEGO Star Wars is still one of their top performers. Just because an IP is hugely popular doesn't mean you can slap the name on any random object and have a hot seller, and just because someone else dropped a total stinker on the market doesn't mean you can't make a solid hit out of the same IP if you do it right. That said, my concern is that the more people figure out about this teaser image, the less confident I am that _this_ falls into that last group.

As for Dimensions, we don't know if any of the exclusive IPs have contractual rights to produce regular themes, or if they even still hold any of those licenses. We do know that they have _designs_ for all those released parts, but we also know that they have a penchant for scrapping molds that are no longer needed. Many of those molds may no longer exist. They just passed a perfect opportunity to transition the Sonic Dimensions pack into a movie tie-in theme, but the fact that they just announced a partnership with Nintendo may explain why they let that one pass them by.

@fakespacesquid:
We still don't have Stay Puft, Gozer, the ballroom, or pretty much anything from Ghostbusters 2. Ghostbusters 3 is also on the horizon, so expect to see this theme pop up at least one more time.

As for Nintendo, keep in mind that the Gamecube was the most profitable console of its generation, the Wii ranks amongst the most profitable media franchises of all time (more than TMNT, Sailor Moon, Frozen, Superman, or Star Trek), and both Microsoft and Sony had to heavily subsidize their own consoles just to get anyone to buy them. And by that I mean they were selling them at a loss early in the production cycle because nobody would buy them otherwise (for that matter, Sony had to strongarm retailers into buying the PSP if they wanted access to the PS3, and then nobody wanted to buy the PS3 except with the intention of flipping it on eBay). Nintendo consoles aren't overpriced. They just seem that way compared to consoles that have to be given away to establish a viable market base. You see the return on the game prices, which are generally lower because Nintendo doesn't have to recover their losses on game royalties.

You see, I am not even that bitter that TLG has shifted its focus more towards other markets. I totally understand that they want to throw the most of their resources at those markets that promise the biggest return on investment. If that is the US, so be it, if it is going to be China in the future, even better, as I love Asian source material, especially the architecture.

We in Germany have alternatives now that are often even better than LEGO (as far as instructions or source material or brick quality or prints instead of stickers or designs are concerned), catering to the interests of brick fans here. Right now I am in the process of building the Titanic from Cobi and it is an awesome set. A while ago I built several BlueBrixx sets of fire engines and railway locomotives and carriages, before that several City-type sets by Qman as well as a Technic set from CaDa. After I am finished with the Titanic I have the LEGO Fiat 500 and Vestas Wind Turbine as well as many other unbuilt LEGO sets to look forward to. And then there is my growing collection of monofigs, another cool LEGO pastime, hunting down all the rarer parts. :-)

You see, there is plenty of great variety and still stuff from LEGO as well that I am highly interested in.

I am not even that bitter about the announced Nintendo cooperation. If it yields great sets I will be the last to complain.
At the moment I just can't fathom what kinds of interesting sets this cooperation could bring about.

But I absolutely wouldn't mind if LEGO also produced some more of their Classic own themes again instead of only ever more licenced sets.

Anyway, no hard feelings. Moving on.
