What new licensed theme should LEGO produce next?

Posted by ,

LEGO has introduced many new licensed themes during recent years, encompassing various films, television series and video games.

We therefore invited your submissions for which properties might be appropriate for future LEGO themes. Having received almost 540 comments and numerous fun ideas, we have created a poll that includes the most popular suggestions!

Cast your vote after the break...

What new licensed theme should LEGO produce next?

Asterix
Discworld
Futurama
Godzilla
Gravity Falls
How to Train Your Dragon
Pokémon
Star Trek
Studio Ghibli
The Adventures of Tintin
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Legend of Zelda
Thunderbirds
Transformers
World of Warcraft

Brickset member GSR_MataNui recommended dividing the suggestions between properties that would be completely new to LEGO and others which have existed previously but could potentially return. That certainly seems sensible so licensed themes which could return will appear in a subsequent poll.

We might also publish a separate poll which would comprise properties that seem unlikely to become associated with LEGO, given their mature subject matter. They have been omitted on this occasion but many interesting suggestions were made!

Moreover, many people stressed their interest in more original themes in the future. While potential licensed sets are the subject of these articles, the return of classic ranges or the development of new examples remains similarly important and must be acknowledged.

Which possible new theme did you vote for? Let us know in the comments.

No m.a.s.k. ? ??

Hard to choose between zelda, pokemon and transformers, but zelda gets my vote

By in Turkey,

Not only that I love Adventures of Tintin, but also the vehicles of the era are marvelous. Think about the red rocket! I wouldn't mind having it as UCS.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Definetely How To Train Your Dragon, best animated franchise ever!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

These are not listed but Thundercats, MOTU, captain scarlett, Gi joe, stingray, wacky races & the jetsons..

By in United States,

Pokemon is being handled extremely well by MEGA right now. The purists need to look past the brand name if they want a good Pokemon theme. It's already out there.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was torn between Godzilla, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Star Trek. Star Trek won because the other two would not be conducive to brick form.

I would also love to see an Over the Garden Wall series.

By in Poland,

I think Startrek is a useless option because Lego is so deeply connected with Star Wars which is like an arch enemy of Startrek business wise. It's like Coke and Pepsi, no way that will happen.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Zelda, HTTYD and Warcraft. But i picked Zelda!

Gravatar
By in Austria,

All of these are pretty boring, but I think Astérix is the one who would translate better into a LEGO line.

They added Marvel sets after a decade of DC only sets.

By in Canada,

Star Trek, hands down.

Because of licensing I assume we will never see a Lego Star Trek theme. I also certainly can't see how Trek and Star Wars could exist concurrently with each other either; Lego is definitely not going to end Star Wars. Additionally, If Lego is hesitant to bring Space back because of Star Wars, Trek doesn't stand a chance.

I can dream though.

By in Hungary,

Narnia, Warcraft.

Gravatar

What? No National Geographic/Historical theme?

Gravatar

Warcraft

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Gravity falls got my vote. I would love a $200 mystery shack in a similar style to the Simpsons sets

Gravatar
By in United States,

Where's the "None of the Above" option? I want Lego to go back to its '80s roots and build Castle and Pirates sets.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I voted Star Trek even though I am certain it will never happen. Mega has the licence and has produced some awesome sets. TNG and DS9 would be my favorite era and that has never been done, but it is also so far in the past that chances are even more remote - the new Picard series notwithstanding.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don’t mind licensed themes but have no interest in any of those.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't remember reading any comments asking for WoW....must have skipped past them.

That said, they REALLY need to pick up Star Trek as a theme.... Ships alone you've got hundreds of models from The Enterprise to the Romulans, Klingons, Borg etc. Not to mention minifigures, various planet sets, holodeck situations etc etc. Certainly more of a potential market with it then say for instance... Trolls.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I know it's not on list, but how about Charlie Brown

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Austinpowers: Megabloks had the Despicable Me Licence, but now we're getting lego Minions. Character had the Doctor Who licence, but we had sets for them... So its not impossible.

Gravatar

I’d love to see both the Legend of Zelda and Gravity Falls properties explored in brick form!

gravity falls

I couldn't not to vote for Studio Ghibli!

And I am glad, that "my another choice" gets so many votes!

TINTIN bien-sur, such great figs and véhicules

Gravatar

I've voted for Asterix but Thunderbirds deserved mine as well.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Thunderbirds! Thunderbirds!! THUNDERBIRDS!!!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I could never grasp the appeal of Zelda thing... but would be pleased with Asterix (imagine all the main characters plus your army of Roman soldiers!).
Also Tintin would be amazing.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

While I'd love to see Transformers, that ain't happening... Transformers is a Hasbro brand, which is a direct competitor of LEGO.

Since that won't happen (apart from some industry-shaking company acquisition), my next preference is Thunderbirds. Both the concept (rescue missions in a "near" future) and the toyetic potential are totally in line with the LEGO values. I just wish the recent Ideas flunk is due to an already ongoing licensing deal to bring Thunderbirds to LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hard to choose between Thunderbirds and Discworld, but decided I would love to see a CMF of Discworld characters, unlikely as it is :)
But in all honestly, i would rather Lego just slowed down a bit, and concentrated on what they have atm, instead of rushing a new theme out every few months and only doing maybe a couple of sets for it, then moving onto to the next theme

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just thinking about a series of giant buildable monsters from Godzilla movies made me have to vote Godzilla

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Tintin and motu!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know that Nintendo and Lego just announced a partnership. There's rumors floating around about potential sets, but the focus is Mario. Some of these rumors are saying that there could be sets from other Nintendo properties besides just the Mario series. We could be getting Zelda and Pokemon sets. Also, there is a rumor CMF series that I'm super excited about.

Narnia was an easy choice for me

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If I'm being brutally honest everything apart from one doesn't interest me in the slightest, the only one I would actually like to see is Futurama. Don't even know half of them, and the other half I do know I couldn't care less about tbh.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Transformers are never, never, never going to happen. They are wholly owned by Hasbro. There is no license to be had. The only possible way for this occur is if Hasbro and Lego merged, which seems highly unlikely. Wholly owned IPs by Hasbro or Mattel should not be on poles.

This. That goes double for star trek and Motu. Have you seen the mega castle grayskull? It's an amazing set. Actually a full castle, and not just a wall or facade.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I also picked up the Mega Enterprise, and it is a fantastic display piece

Gravatar
By in United States,

With no Darkwing Duck, Babylon 5, or Muppets on the list, that pretty much nailed Futurama as my vote. Here's hoping for the Futurama Ideas project to get approved!

@jaredhinton:
Um...what? The Dork from New York had a run of sets from 2002-2004, based on the first two Sam Raimi/Tobey MacGuire movies. Then the best superhero got his run from 2006-2008. DC Superheroes was next with two SDCC minifigs in 2011, which were teamed up with a stock Superman minifig at NYCC a few months later, and followed by the first retail sets in 2012. Marvel Superheroes also came out in 2012, with two NYTF exclusive minifigs, preceding the first wave of retail sets. So, that's three years of only Marvel, a gap year, three years of only DC, two more gap years, one year of a hint of DC, and then both Superheroes themes kicked off in the same year.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Could we have a redo and get to choose our top 3 choices?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Zelda for the win! I mean, who, who has played breath of the wild, would chose any other theme? It’s clearly the best for massive structures and beasts, let alone some awesome minifigs.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

YES! Give us the opportunity to vote for two... :-)

But "Asterix & Co." would be a best seller.... there is so much fun to be had with Romans, Gauls and endless of crazy minifigs.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

None of them.
Use your own imagination and build anything you like from non-licensed parts.
Compare 10266 with 367 which is 45 years older yet very recognizeable.

Gravatar

Asterix, Futurama, Discworld - Treehouses, funky spaceships, medieval towns :)

Gravatar

Indiana Jones and Back to the Future please.

Gravatar

Between how to train your dragon and gravity falls for me. Very good choices there! Would love futurama as well

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There's some good themes that I don't think would work well as Lego

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Hard to choose between How To Train Your Dragon (chose it), Gravity Falls, Godzilla and The Legend of Zelda.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don't think that any of these will be good themes, maybe a one-set like "Strangers Things" or "Flinstones" Ideas, but not a line. Just like Trolls and Minions are pretty bad. Lego already licensed the super-brands. IDK, Maybe Zelda ? but even that is a stretch.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I voted for Warcraft but wouldn't be unhappy with Star Trek or Zelda. Guess I have a penchant for pointy ears!

Funny thing is I've never played WoW or Zelda. I just like the look of them.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@elangab said:

Warcraft Mega Bloks did exist and even that was a very limited range of what the theme could be, could easily be a line of LEGO sets, as there are many many games, books, even a movie to based on, and a huge base of lore on par with Harry Potter or LotR.

Literally hundreds of characters, creatures, locations, weapons, magic spells.

Gravatar
By in France,

I really hesitate between Asterix and Miyasaki fantastic worlds and characters. I don't know if Asterix is as popular in your country as it is here in France, but I guess both could sell well. As a beta and first era player I would certainly get WoW sets if they were released, but its all about factions and war or battles and thus does not fit Lego in my opinion, which is first for kids, and as we already have many themes of the kind, conflict between good and evil. Asterix is more on the comic side of it, and Miyazaki, who talks a lot about war too in some of his movies, mixes it with much fantasy. And just imagine a Totoro or Ponyo figurine !

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for Asterix. I can see how LEGO can adapt this. I grew up with Asterix even here in the United States.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I went for Studio Ghibli. Spirited Away is easily the greatest animated movie ever and My Neighbour Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Laputa are excellent as well, but it was tough. I would instantly buy Asterix, Tintin, Transformers or Thunderbirds as well.

Hope an ideas set based on some of these pass a review soon.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

WoW would be limitless potential. But no kids would get it :<

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Im super happy to see Tintin and Thunderbirds up there! I didnt even think of Tintin! I was only thinking of that great film (not to mention the great original comics) the other day!

A Karabujuan with seaplane catapult would be a pretty awesome set! Plus the crane battle from the film would be very popular with kids.

A small $10-15 set could be Tintin and Cpt. Haddock in the red jeep with the bazooka.

My inner child would also love to have the rocket as someone mentioned, thats a classic.

LOL professor Calculus and Thompson and Thompson would be hilarious (good excuse to create a walking stick/cane piece) Plus green hair would be popular. (I forget if that was from Land of Black Gold or the Space ones)

It would be interesting to see an Arab headgear mould if they did Land of the Black Gold.

Sadly Marlinspike Hall would probably be too big for a set. Maybe a scaled down D2C? Like the front entrance (a full enclosed building MF haunted house style just with the Classical architecture at the front and the all important haddock, as opposed including the wings of the building)

Tintin would be an awesome theme, I finally get old cars and aircraft plus pirate & classic space fans could be happy with the Golden Unicorn ship and that rocket! This MUST become a theme!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would prefer a "none of the above" option but that's just me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Out of those? Gravity Falls got my vote. It was a pretty big disappointment when the Ideas Mystery Shack was disqualified (did we ever learn why that was?), so my support goes fully behind seeing that realised in the brick form officially.

Studio Ghibli was the other serious contender for my vote: mostly because Howl's Moving Castle captured in Lego would be a fantastic set to see. And How to Train Your Dragon in Lego is absolutely something I wouldn't say no to - though I know the license for that one is elsewhere, so...? *shrugs*

Gravatar
By in United States,

Totally up for a new Castle theme, It's been awhile (Nexo knights not included XD). Though as always, LEGO should re-release LOTR and the Hobbit again.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's stunning for how many years now we all wanted The LEGO Legend of Zelda and even now it leads in the survey. On the other hand, now that LEGO teamed up with Nintendo for Mario, this dream might be closer than ever.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Only one is cruel... my choice was Pokémon, but The Legend of Zelda, Grafity Falls, Studio Ghibli and Transformers would be welcome too.

People still expecting Lego to return to the 80s and do Space, Pirates and Castle, oh my... blind nostalgia can be so funny sometimes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can’t say I have some special attachment to the brand itself, but I think Transformers would provide some interesting sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Who’s voting for Star Trek?

Don’t you people follow the news in this biz? Star Trek merch is deader that dead. MacFarlane LOST money on their last Trek deal. Why? Because the overly zealous religious nuts that own (co-own?!?) the franchises want them to focus on the new garbage only the Twitterati love (but never buy). They won’t produce the TOS and TNG stuff people love.

Not enough preaching in it, you see. LEGO would be out of their minds to enter into any kind of agreement for Trek merch.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just realized I should've suggested a MAD MAX line!
Man that'd be a great line with all those vehicles!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, I heard the Mega Bloks Star Trek didn't sell well. Not sure but I heard.
I even picked up their large USS Enterprise that retailed for $250-, for only $80 bucks at BestBuy like a year plus back.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted earlier today, and it wasn’t doing this before, but for some reason, it is giving me the voting screen again without telling me that I already voted. I wanted to check up on how the results are doing (probably about the same as they were a few hours ago), but I don’t want to have to vote a second time to do it, as I feel that voting twice would be unfair.

Gravatar

Hi! They have already made a Stranger Things set, in fact! It's based on the first episode, and you can get it on Lego.com. It is a bit pricey, though, so maybe look out for a second hand one(although TBH I'm not sure anyone would want to sell theirs!!!) Hope this helped ;]"

Clearly, @elangab already knows that a Stranger Things set exists. That is why he references it as an example of a franchise with a single set, not a range.

Thank you for communicating articulately what I feel would be an incredible Theme! So much potential as each of Herge's books provide a wonderful world of rich characters, settings and vehicles. What a treasure trove of inspiration for our Lego Master Builders! I've already filled the study at home and will need to take over the rumpus room if this happens as I hope!

I'm a "more original themes, please," kind of guy (Aquazone, Chima, Ninjago, Alpha Team), but of the choices, I voted Studio Ghibli.

@Brick_t_:
As with most things in the world, you can find a few people who have encountered it and enjoy it. Generally speaking, though, you're more likely to be corrected on your spelling of "asterisk". If the minifigs are interesting enough, it might sell better on that basis than on name recognition. For that reason, I don't think they're likely to ever do this as a theme. Even an Ideas set is a long shot, since the current trend for licensed IP is to only produce those that have some sort of fan base in the US.

@BionicleJedi:
There were two projects that were disqualified for undisclosed reasons during the same review period. I've read that at least one of the two designers (by their own admission) was employed at a LEGO Store, and there's a strict "no employees" rule. The question, then, is if too much time will have passed before a new project can be submitted, voted up to 10k (which may be a lot harder if people think they already voted for it), and sent to review.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A lot of these themes wouldn't really fit great into Lego. I mean how many Narnia sets could be made? And then others would be interesting, Tintin or Star Trek (although unlikely on that one) would be really cool themes. But I personally voted for Transformers because I feel that would be the most interesting new subject in the craft of Lego. There are lots of cool Transformers type mocs and mocmakers (IXRolloutIX, M1ndxbend3r, aranobilis98, etc. for some examples of good builders). But I'd love to see that brought into a more official space, where I could just go to the store and buy instead of parts sourcing through the web and building on my own

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Ghibli. Obviously. A great way to show respect LEGO lovers from Asia. I'd love to see some of those fantastic and colourful constructions done in LEGO. And a LEGO Totoro would be wonderful if they did it well.

No Power Rangers, no vote from me. I can't see myself investing in the rest.

Gravatar
By in United States,

From the options here, I went with Thunderbirds. To bad Splatoon isn't on here, it would work well as a Lego theme. It also has a big fan base so it could bring a lot of gamers into the Lego world.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would love World of Warcraft (even though I don't play yet) because of the new prints and pieces that would result. A close second would be Studio Ghibli, but only if they did a large-scale Totoro in the spirit of the big Star Wars BB-8 or Porg.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I selected Godzilla from this list as that would be something I'd be interested in, BUT when ever this topic comes up I will also suggest Wizard of Oz. I probably sound like a broken record but I think Oz would be a great theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wish Lego would go back to basics. Bring back Fabuland, Space, Castle, Pirates, studded Technic sets especially Universal Sets with the ability to build multiple models in each set, a return of Technic Maxi figures, 9v Trains, and most importantly of all, a return to a proper, comprehensive Town series. Also, Lego never used to have girl specific themes like Friends, Lego used to be for everyone. When I was a boy my first set was the Shell Petrol Pumps with a Lego Girl. I didnt care the character was female. Saying that, all these themes deserve sets at affordable price points in all sizes as they used to do. Legos reliance on over-pricing and licences isn't as creatively stimulating as it used to be.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can TLG just invent a time machine so I can go back and get all the cool sets I missed out on previously? That would solve the problem going forward as well, since it wouldn't matter if they did licensed or original themes - I could just go back at anytime and get pristine new sets at the then current price of whatever tickles my fancy!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BrickerRalph:
Hundreds? No, seriously, the books are rich with different fantastical settings, creatures, and characters. One of the huge advantages it would have over other fantasy themes is that the core characters slowly cycle out as the series progresses, so you'd never really get a pile of redundant minifigs the way you people did with the original Harry Potter run. I'd say it has more potential for a LEGO theme than LotR did, strictly in terms of the variety of sets that could be made. LotR wins hands down on the strength of sales, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Several of those are off the table as I believe Megablox already has the license. I'd say Zelda is the obvious choice--even if it weren't a disirable theme, no one else is doing it and Lego and Nintendo have already worked together extensively. Kind of a no-brainer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope you take the opportunity to highlight some ideas projects based on these themes. There's tons of great ones for many of these themes.

I mean, if 14% of voters supported one, that could be 1,000+.

Yes and no. I have bought a lot of the Mega Construx Pokemon sets and they are inferior in every way. I have had two sets missing a piece, the instructions are woeful and the sets are more expensive than Lego! Lastly the fitment of bricks as well is totally inferior as well. I bought them as I wanted to check out other building block products and I love Pokemon but really, really wish Lego got and hopefully get the license and do it justice.

It's not listed here, but what I'd really love to see are some sets based on Zootopia (AKA Zootropolis).

I want Fast and Furious sets I think they could cross over well with Speed Champions and I know we got the dodge set but it would still be great

With the Super Warrior in the latest wave of collectable minifigures they could easily do Power Rangers. However what I would really like to see is for LEGO to redo/update the Indiana Jones line of sets.

As cool as some of the other options (e.g. Star Trek) might be if done properly, I went with Tintin since that has so much potential for awesome sets.

The difficulty with this would be that a lot of these we can just forget about. Sadly, most of this list is items that are nice to wish for, but from a business perspective are non-starters for a global corporation.

Pokemon and Star Trek are with Mega- never mind any perceived or demonstrable difference of quality, there are long term contracts in place. HTTYD has been passed around with limited success- Kreo and Mega both had it, dropped it in two years, and now it is a Playmobile. I'm seeing people say Power Rangers- they are a Bandai property, might as well try to get Hasbro to license Transformers to TLG. Odds of that is somewhat less than zero.

(The fact that Mega took a bath on Despicable Me/Minions and TLG picked it up tells me someone at TLG isn't paying attention.

Asterix would be neat, but it has no significant market base in the US and probably not in Asia Tintin has more fanbase globally, but it isn't going to work in the US due to lack of awareness. Likewise, Gravity Falls and other Cartoon Network and Nickelodian based properties that don't have the same depth of market penetration in the EU and Asia. Any one of those would be too niche.

Futurama has a drunken robotic sociopath for a major character and too many sex jokes for TLG. This is part of a problem I keep on seeing, that TLG can't decide if it is making toys for kids or curios for adults.

Thunderbirds would be a weak maybe as they are niche one offs. Nostalgia sells a little, but it has very finite capacity. You need an IP that has been globally successful within the past few years. That isn't Thunderbirds. It would sell like Stranger Things- too expensive, too few potential sets, and odds are we'll be finding that one set on clearance in a couple years.

Anything that is novels only, like Discworld, is likewise probably too limited in fanbase. Yes, even Discworld. Or Wheel of Time. Too limited, not worth tooling up for.

I DID vote for HTTYD, but that's based on my wish. For available IPs that haven't flopped, though... Ghibli, although I'm not sure about the playability and it would probably be things like a brickbuilt Totoro who looks like a UCS Porg. Godzilla has the same problem.

From this list, that leaves us with WoW and Zelda. Mario is still Nintendo's mascot IP. They're going to wait to see how this partnership goes. I'm not sure that Nintendo is going to be happy with this deal long term, but if they are, maybe TLG will get other properties.

TLG already has a similiar deal with Blizzard for Overwatch. WoW might get there, but OW hasn't exactly been flying off the shelf from what I can see.

Star Wars saved LEGO, along with Bionicle. I think they're trying to capture the same lightening in a bottle a second time. I'm not sure that is possible. A successful property would sell by the truck load in all three major markets (US, EU and China), be part of the cultural conscious and subconscious in all three, recent enough to have residual hype, sell equally well to kids and adults, and isn't already tied in with existing licenses. I honestly can't think of a single property right now that could do that that TLG doesn't already have access to.

Sad to see Godzilla falling so far behind. For what it's worth, those sets would probably sell really well with the legendary series picking up steam and kids recognizing the monsters. Would've loved to see Biollante or MechaGodzilla.
I really hope the X-Files show up in the unlikely for LEGO poll. I want the minifigs more than the sets, honestly.

Forget about these new themes. BRING BACK PIRATES!

Hard one, if any of these were released I probably wouldn't buy them. I was hoping for Mega Man or Sonic The Hedgehog, since a Mario line with Minifigs is probably coming soon.

They should make a standalone set for the animated short film Cliffside

@VerMonster:
Keep in mind that at least two other companies had the Batman license before TLC picked it up. Then they ran it three years before giving up on it, right when it was primed to take off (2008 sets were nearly impossible to find because The Dark Knight released and everyone hoovered them up). Give it a few years, and they did very well with the launch of DC Superheroes. Someone else also had the TMNT license before the LEGO theme came out, and that also did well. Someone else took the Spiderman license away, had a total flop with Marvel, and now Marvel is one of their top sellers.

Just because another company can't figure out how to be successful doesn't mean that every licensed IP they got their hands on is at fault. Even some of TLC's most successful themes have had sets that were total duds.

Would loved to have seen a Discworld series, but only three votes so far, so I doubt it will happen. Not on the list, but a Firefly set would be amazing too. Of the options left, it would have to be Star Trek of course, I could see that happening at some point, surprised it hasn't already.

I agree, plenty of set options, like the City/Night Watch, the Witches and the Wizards, (the Nac Mac Feegles could be those micro characters!) and many individual characters. Not many votes at the moment though, which is a shame.

Brickset, please don't forget to give us the poll on returning licenses so we can vote for Indy!
