Tutorial: How to indicate you have minifigs missing

Posted by ,

When you add a set to your collection, Brickset automatically adds the figures it contains to your minifig collection.

But what should you do if you sell the minifigs, or if you've bought a used copy of the set that has some or all of them missing? And what if you have two copies of the set, one with minifigs, one without?

This tutorial explains how to deal with each of these scenarios.

Scenario 1: You own one copy of a set but none of the minifigs

Brickset provides a number of collection management checkboxes that can be shown below 'own' and 'want' in the set lists. They can be used for any purpose you like. One of them can be set to indicate that you have minifigs missing.

To set this up:

  1. Log in, if you've not already done so.
  2. Click on your name at the top of the page to open your profile page
  3. In the side menu, at the bottom, click on Collection checkboxes. Here you will be presented with four coloured checkboxes and labels. Any that you enter text into will be shown in set listings.
  4. Check the 'Use this flag to indicate 'minifigs missing'' box and enter some text into the label beside it.
  5. Press save, browse to the sets that you don't have minifigs for, then check the 'minifigs missing' box.

Checking this box will not have an immediate effect on your minifig collection. The change will take effect next time you log in, at the same time as your entire minifig collection is recreated taking into account any recent changes or additions to the minifig data.

You can change the colour of the minifigs missing label from blue to something else on your general preferences page.

Scenario 2: You own one copy of a set but only some of the minifigs

The minifigs missing checkbox described above will remove all the figures in the set from your collection. If you have some of them you can mark them as being owned loose:

Scenario 3: You own multiple copies of a set, some with, and some without minifigs

The minifigs missing checkbox described above will remove all the figures in all the sets in your collection.

Again, if you have a full set of figures, but only a few in a second copy of the set, for example, simply use the 'owned loose' checkboxes and adjust the quantities to suit:

I believe that covers every likely scenario. If there's something else you need to be able to do, let me know.

@Huw any plans to add animals/creatures/non-minifigs to set inventories? I'm curious how many sharks and horses I own

By in Netherlands,

I was recently struggling with this problem, now I just created 2 separate accounts. One for my minifigs and one for my set collection. Now I am probably going to put everything back into 1 account, Great tutorial!

^^ No, because our minifig data comes from BrickLink so we therefore rely in their definition of a minifig to determine what's included and what isn't.

However, in the case of some animals, e.g. https://brickset.com/parts/design-62606, you can see how many you own if you enable the parts collection functionality as described in the relevant tutorial.

Great and thorough tutorial, thanks for this!!

THANK YOU I've got quite a few sets without the figures for one reason or another, this makes things a lot easier! :)

By in United Kingdom,

I found out about this little feature ages ago, when I was poking around the settings after I first joined. It's super-useful, especially in the cases like, for me, Royal Knights' Castle, which I was given second-hand with only two of its minifigures present (the king and the skeleton).

I feel like I've poked around the site's functionality pretty thoroughly; but still, I'm looking forward to see if future tutorials teach me about anything that I've missed! :D Thanks for all you do to make this site so useful, Huw and co!

Thanks but, since minifigs are the stars of the show in most of my sets and I wouldn’t buy a set without minifigs, I don’t think I’m going to need to use this.

Just in case, I’ll add this to my menu pages!

@huw, is there a time delay in when the set owned minifigures disappear after you've checked the Minifigure missing box?.
I've just tried it on 76052 to account for the second set I have without minifigures but it still shows the 2 owned in sets and the loose figures.

With so many neat tricks that use the collection manager checkboxes, can we double or triple the amount of checkboxes available? Mine are all in use already...

By in Italy,

It would be really helpful if you can do vice-versa
I own the minifig but not the set

By in Italy,

I didn’t know about this feature, and I’m very pleased to learn that it is available. I like to buy used sets, which can be much cheaper but sometimes lack of one or more minifigures.

You can! On a set's minifigures page - as seen in scenario 2 and 3 above - or in the minifigure database, each minifig has a checkbox for "I own (number) loose"; you can check that box, and update the number to as many of each minifigure as you own :D

@ALEXDTI , what @BionicleJedi said.

You don't need to find the set it comes in first, you'll also find the checkboxes on every minifigure listing.

Great new function.
Brickset continues to impress with good ideas. Just when you thought it couldn't get much better, it does. :-)
Thank you very much for the effort.

It's not new, it's been available for a couple of years, at least, but like many other advanced features it's perhaps hidden away a bit.

I don't want to admit I lost Jedi Bob...

Isn't it a little redundant over the "Parts, minifigs, instructions, box" flags in the ACM?
What's the purpose of the minifigs flag in ACM if it doesn't adjust minifigs from your collection?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ The ACM isn't well integrated into the rest of the site at the moment.

Thanks for the additional option, Huw! I've never included 6210 Jabba's Sale Barge in my Brickset collection because I bought it off eBay without the skiff and no minifigs, but now I can. Hurrah!

Hmm... if only there was a way to indicate there's a vehicle missing...

By in Venezuela,

Hi Huw, this feature is not working for me, I previously used the 4th checkbox for "No minifigs for this set" but all 5 sets that I have under this checkbox have the minifigure count on my collection.
In the site works, but when I export my collection via CSV file the minifigures are there

By in United States,

So I've known about this feature since it was mentioned as a feature a year or so ago; however, I find it very clunky and don't really use it because I'm thinking the checkbox for missing minifigure should go on the list of minifigures for a set and not require removing all minifigures and then re-adding the one you are missing.

I would think that it is more common for one minifigure to be missing (dropped, lost, or taken at a convention) than all of them to not be there. In which case just identifying the missing one would be easier.

For example, I had a pack of 4 minifigures with one of the missing (https://brickset.com/sets/6105-1/Medieval-Knights). By clicking the missing minifigure I now listed as missing all of the minifigures of a set consisting of mainly minifigures. This feels really clunky to re-add all the ones I am missing just because of the one missing.

My bad , missed it in the the last paragraph on scenario one. Sorry.

Fascinating. It had totally escaped me up to now.

That's brilliant. A feature I can use...mostly as I'm completing used sets. I just tested it out on my Jango Slave I. I haven't yet found a good enough deal on the Jango, but I have Young Boba Fett. It's not a big deal, but I never liked having it showing up as owning the Jango figure. That's now rectified (I just tried it and it worked perfectly). Now I just need to track down that Jango figure :-)

Also, when completing sets, I often hold off adding the set til it's complete with all the figures, now I have the option to add the set with some or none of the figures.

Love it! Thanks for the tip!

@Huw

Can you enable users to have more than four category flags? I am already using the four allotted flags to organize my collection. I could use a few more.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Great feature, but now my collection ONLY shows my loose minifigs. If I look at the "in sets I own" option, it's blank :(

Edit: Weird. I added another set to see what would happen and that fixed it.

@maxzeecoolguy that can happen at around 05:00 server time (currently GMT+1) while data is re-imported and crunched.
