A trio of supercars

In yesterday's review of 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 I promised that I'd line it up with the other recent Technic supercars, 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and 42083 Bugatti Chiron, for a group photo-shoot.

I've done just that, and they look superb together!

My photography table is 1.6m wide and 0.8m deep, so normally big enough for even the largest LEGO model. However, lining the three cars up on it, and ensuring there was white backdrop behind them in the photos, was a bit of a challenge.

My flash softboxes are 1m square, so not small by any means, but it was not possible to illuminate the as evenly as I would have liked.

The table is set up in my oldest daughter Chloe's ex-bedroom (she moved out a few years ago) so I have her to thank for the dark red paint on the wall behind. I'm sure a lighter colour would help reflect the light a bit and probably improve things.

Nevertheless, the results are not too bad...

There's some confusion around the scale of the Porsche, with LEGO stating 1:8 in some places and 1:10 in others. As discussed in the comments, it appears to be 1:8, matching the other two, but closer to 1:7.5 in height and width.

View image at flickr

The vehicles are so long that the backs of them are very close to the vertical part of the backdrop, so cast shadows on it, which is undesirable, but not much I can easily do about it short of rearranging the room.

View image at flickr

I had to use a wide-angle lens for the photos, so while I had it out, here's the Sián at 16mm.

View image at flickr

This is how they look on my deep Billy shelves. It's annoying that there are not holes in the side for the shelf supports to enable them to be spaced evenly!

The Porsche and Bugatti are superb but the Lamborghini takes the series to a whole new level.

This concludes my coverage of 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. I hope you've enjoyed it and that I've encouraged you to think about buying one for yourself.

Personally, I can't wait to see what LEGO come up with for the fourth in the series. Any bets? Something in Rosso corsa perhaps? :)

The set is currently available from LEGO.com for $379.99 / £349.99 / €379.99.

Thanks to LEGO for providing it for review. All expressed opinions are my own.

By in Sweden,

I'm not into cars, nor into Technic, but those look fantastic together. The colors are really vibrant as well. I'm tempted to get into the line now...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Billy bookcases are easy to drill to enable you to space them evenly...I've done it for all my CD's

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If they are standard pins it's a 5mm drill with a depth stop and a very steady hand to fix the hole layout problem in the bookcase..

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow so that's what £1100 worth of Lego looks like (if anyone paid RRP) I wonder how much City or Creator you could get for that and how much it would fill the Cabinet. Huw a Challenge. :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ too much effort and mess. Looking again now I could probably move the Lamborghini shelf up one although then it would not be at the same level as in the adjacent Billy's

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

A red or yellow car would be perfect as the next Technic supercar!

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Next in 2022 is Red Ferrari.. one does not have to be a genius to know that..

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Porsche was the first?
Surely 8880 was the first supercar :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Of the latest 1:8 scale series...

By in France,

Still not a Technic range fan, but I can't say anything else than : they are superb. The last the best IMO, sleeker, more accurate. But having seen the Porsche exposed at Disney Lego store near Paris, can say that in flesh it is a magnificent Lego set, huge and impressive. And as usual, after viewing videos of the gear box and technic functionalities, I am really impressed with the quality and mastering of all those gears and mechanisms. Thumbs up to the designers. One can always find issues, or things that could have been done differently, but what I know is that I don't know many people who could match their designs. I don't know anyone who could in fact.

Nice one Huw, they look great altogether. Your reviews are such an enabler! I'm going to have to wait for a discount though.

@ LukasM
Yh, A Ferrari is definitely needed now. But which one will it be....?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow the Lamborghini is a definite standout for me!

This leaves me wondering - would the McLaren F1 would look better as a Technic or Creator Expert set...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Man the Porsche looks revolting from the front.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Are they in the same scale? I looked up some measurements from wikipedia
lenth, width, hight
Bugatti Chiron
4544mm, 2038mm, 1212mm
Porsche GT 3 RS
4562mm, 1852mm, 1271mm
Lamborghini Sian 37 FKP
4980mm, 2101mm, 1133mm
from the pictures it looks like the Porsche is a bit larger than the other two cars. But given the limitations of LEGO they still look great.

By in United Kingdom,

Wow, so lovely !
Although I'm not car fans, but I really like the pictures like this group photo-shoot.
I'll grab the Lamborghini at once & build the Porsche and Bugatti which are still in the original sealed box then for a group photo-shoot.
Thank you Huw for your nice pictures!

By in Latvia,

Why is it that I like the Land Rover more than the supercars? Maybe it's because it's blockier and more suited for Technic, although I still love them all!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I feel that they should make a car in all white at some point. I think it would look really nice. I would like to see the Lambo in all white!

A bit odd, given the Bugatti one says "Exclusive 1:8 scale LEGO Bugatti Chiron replica model with a wealth of luxurious features..."

However, the Porsche press release says "The LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a 1:10 scale model ..."

By in Switzerland,

Actually, there are four supercars in these pictures. The new Land Rover Pretender should be included in the lineup - which I love as a supreme LEGO model but despise as a real car :-).

i don't get it...on the Porsche's box it says 1:8...so they are labeled at the same scale, but the proportions are a bit off, though..

Also, if the Porsche is not 1:8, it's not 1:10 neither...could be instead 1:7 or 1:6, I suppose

what about the white Porsche RSR (42096) Is this 1:8 scale?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ya know, I was fine with having just the Porsche. Don't have the room for displaying anything else at this point anyway. But now seeing the three of them together, especially that last picture in the shelves, and I might need to get the Bugatti and the Lambo.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love the pictures, but should consider putting something in the images that provides scale. Those cars are pretty large, but can't really tell without something to compare with (i.e., a minifigure, etc.).

Now there needs to be a cherry red vehicle in the mix...

By in Russian Federation,

@Huw can you upload rear view with open/close spoiler ?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@Huw : far more annoying to me than the missing holes would be the fact that Ikea doesn't offer the deep Billy shelves at all any more.

Plus, the fact that the colour consistency of the lime green pieces is awful to say the least is one reason to not buy this set. Unless TLG manages to do something about it. A set this expensive shouldn't have problems like this. Even the **edited by admin** that I got has better colour consistency than this set. Which is really saying something about the self-touted "quality leader".

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Although not keen on the green gold color by itself, it oddly does contrast well with the orange and blue. Just need to find a way to display permanently from the front at a slight angle as in the 3rd photo, i.e. the angled car-park look.

Do you have a 8145 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano or 8653 Enzo Ferrari to compare them against as these are meant to be 1:10? The next car definitely needs to be a red Ferrari, say F8 Tributo as so much has happened in the last 13 years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Another Lego packaging mistake then as the Porsche 42056 box clearly shows 1:8 in the top right hand corner.

ferrari is not owned by Volkswagen AG... all the 1:8 Lego supercars are licenced by VW AG. I guess the next car will be Audi R8 or Bentley

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego already has a licensing agreement with Ferrari and has released 47 sets (including multiple technic sets) with the Ferrari name on them. A Bentley or Audi would be boring. I would rather see a C8 Corvette before either of those.

At least they still offer the Detolf showcases which I use to store my Modulars and other stuff on 32x32 baseplates like the Old Fishing Store.

I'm also not much of a Technic fan, but they look absolutely beautiful all together like that.

By in Canada,

I didn't order the Lamborghini yet but i will get it soon. Color wise I like the blue the best and the orange the least. I have all the supercars since 1977. Still hope they will come out with an upgraded 853 sometimes, and still with a lots of studded bricks.

About the change in the text: "
Correction: They are not to scale: the Porsche is apparently 1:10, while LEGO claims the other two are 1:8 which still doesn't explain why the Porsche is higher: it should be lower at a smaller scale..."

To me the Porsche (42056) appears to be larger than both the Chiron and Sian which are at 1:8 scale. Therefore I expect the scale of Porsche to be towards 1:7, e.g. smaller (second) number rather than larger. Aren't these scale ratings same as for maps?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Huw The product page for the Porsche states its a 1:8 model https://www.lego.com/en-au/product/porsche-911-gt3-rs-42056

Looking at the press release as well, it actually has both scales listed, 1:8 in the product description section, and then 1:10 at the end.

Based on the measurements provided by @Nordbart, and the product listings, the Porsche *is* 1:8, from the front to the back. Its 1:7.5 on its height measurement, and for its width

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The Porsche is definitely NOT 1/10 scale.

In fact, the closest to proper 1/10 scale we have from Lego is something like the the Creator Mini Cooper S, and possibly the Beetle.

A 1/10 scale car like a Porsche GT3 would be about 180mm wide, which is roughly the width of an iPad, or a Nintendo Switch minus JoyCons, or the distance between the Q and P keys on a standard keyboard.

Lego has stated in the past that they determine the dimensions of a car by choosing the best wheel/tyre combo from their inventory, to fit the intended design. For these sets a bespoke wheel is made to go with a pre-existing tyre, which happens to be the same across all three of the large Technic supercars.

Supercars these days have pretty large wheels, and let's say the are 20" rims, that means a 1/10 scale wheel diameter will be 2", or roughly 50mm. Give or take a few mm for different wheel sizes on the real car. The wheels for these things are 62.3mm, some 20% larger than 1/10 scale.

I can only conclude that they are in the ballpark of 1/8 scale. The obvious reason why they aren't accurately scaled against one another is because they are limited to the dimensions of the Lego system of building. And it probably doesn't matter all that much anyway :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for your comments on scale. It seems LEGO wasn't quite sure either!

I'd say it's closer to 1:8 than 1:10, and as mentioned above more like 1:7.5 in some dimensions.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

There is already a 1:8 red Ferrari: 8674

However, no gearbox an that.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It always gets me the people that nitpick these sets because they don't look exact etc.... I think these sets look amazing and those that are over critical forget these are built out of Lego. It also suggests they never grew up in the early days of Technic, therefore can't appreciate how far its come. If you want close to perfection, perhaps switch hobbies and start collecting die-cast models.

Boring ...... really ?? I suppose if Chevrolet were admired outside the US your wish may come true but in Europe we have corners and roundabouts so our cars tend to have a bit more thought around handling - which adds to the cars design and look ..... so yes a Ferrari or a McLaren would probably be more appealing to the majority ;Op

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think they are all close enough to 1:8 ratio considering the designer is working with lego, to be arguing minor discrepencies - I can't wait complete the trio !! Thanks for the review - really enjoyed it

A pre-production C8 posted a 7:28 Nurburgring lap time - I think they have cornering down with this one.
