Storage solutions: brickengineeringdude

Posted by ,

Cole and Nicholas, one of whom is aka brickengineeringdude, give us a look at their display and storage:

My brother and I have been building LEGO for around 13 years. We own approximately 240 sets, so about 60,000 actual pieces.

At first, we tried to sort by colour, but it was too difficult to locate small parts. We recently started sorting by part which works much better.

Most of our parts are still unsorted. Some of the sets in this red bin include 3677 Red Cargo Train, 7939 Cargo Train, 10219 Maersk Train, and 7938 Passenger Train, and almost all of the first wave of Speed Champions. Plenty of reasons to get sorting!

The display shelves are Ikea Kallax shelves. They could use some shelf dividers. On the top shelf are Ideas sets, Speed Champions, and MOCs. The bins on the bottom hold unfinished sets and instructions.

The storage drawers are basic Sterlite containers. The small pieces are stored in an Iris 64 drawer cabinet.

Minifigures are stored in fishing tackle boxes.

Small minifigure arms, hands and things are stored in this small box.

We use a duster as well as compressed air to keep models clean.

Thanks for the opportunity to show our storage system. We hope this helps others with storage ideas.

Your collections looks good. I am guessing that you each have your individual sets otherwise what will happen in the future with some of the larger sets when you move out? Thanks for participating in the series!

Way to go guys! Nice stuff. Keep it up.
Air canisters are great for dusting, use 'em too.

What are those cool grey military style vehicles (beside the Speed Champions)? Are those MOC's?

Looks like a great collection you've got going! I would suggest filing those instructions a little better though...

I would assume so. I think I see some BrickArm elements too.

Cool collection guys!

Ikea does options for the Kallax shelves including dividers, great collection by the way.

Military mocs, you must be from USA

Kallax is horrible for displaying bigger scenes. Its way too deep.
It seems to be good for technic though.

By in France,

Pretty cool and clean setup. I was all about the Kallax for my Legos too until I recently found the Yvar system. I think its gonna be my project for the next few months.

The Kallax is still pretty great to store lots of boxes since my house lacks storage space but it sometimes feels that it leaves too much empty space when I display small sets, and then not enough for the larger. The other system will allow me to setup drawers below, a stowaway table and shelves almost up to the ceiling... in theory.

Nice setup. I have some Speed Champions sets, too, but I don't think I'll go into 8 wide territory unless it's a really special car for me. One note on the instructions bin, you may wanna place them in orderly manner so that when they're on top of each other they will straighten each other, instead of staying bent and leaving creases.

By in Australia,

how do you create a storage solutions article on Brickset? I have my own method of sorting and storing LEGO and advice on how to clean LEGO that I'd love to contribute. Cheers.

Nice storing solutions. I use more or less the same. With tons of ziplocks and carton boxes as well, which I meticulously hide from plain sight in exactly those bins you use for your instructions. Small house, so wife (and me to a certain degree) can tolerate a certain number of exhibited LEGO models.

8-stud cars look waaaay more beautiful/"normal" in proportions but they interfere with the LEGO baseplate road system (if one uses them in a city layout). I am torn between those two styles...
