What’s with the cheap looking renders?

Gravatar
By in Latvia,

These look really cool, especially the Toad's Treasure hunt and the Fortress!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not really interested, to be honest. Money better spent elsewhere.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I might pick up some (?all) of the character packs if the game code/interactive function thingy is a sticker that I don’t have to use...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dare I say there are too many of these? I mean wow they are going all in. This theme is going to be scary expensive to keep up with. I guess I just really wish they were Minifigure scale, I certainly wouldn’t complain about that.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

These are starting to shape up nicely - I was not convinced at all with the initial concept but it’s Developing well and my kids have started to get into it - I’d still like minifigures though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW! I love the character packs and all these sets look amazing!

First 2 paragraph tells that. Pics are out of the app's building instructions

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I rather like guarded fortress. Also might pick up some of the character packs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'll likely only get one or two, due to price, but I can't shake that getting all of them and modifying them, one could make a nice LEGO version of the Galaxy's Edge style Mario theme park currently being built in Japan...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

i am dissapointed as i thought the toads treasure hunt set would be captain toad kind of set

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Actually none. But I don't have any great nostalgia nor attachmend to Mario

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I will wait for the 71360 review, at the moment this appear to be a very expensive £50 starter board game, possibly because of the relatively large bluetooth Mario single piece object, requiring at least a few further purchases shown above to be large enough to be interesting.
It would be more playable if 71360 could be reconfigured into half a dozen different layouts, but as the Mario character is large and the piece count is small this is difficult to do. Either way, the full set-up is going to hurt someones wallet.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I love Yoshi being brick built.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Need Mario nostalgia but don't want to spend mad money on not-very-good LEGO sets?

Get yourself a SNES mini on eBay, along with a big box of Classic LEGO.

= same result!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Well, there’s no doubt these are pretty fun sets and I like the system with them, but I’m not buying any until some minifigure scale sets are released.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

The fact that there isn't an interactive app/game for the Nintendo Switch lets me a bit down... I just started my Switch collection, and I might buy Luigi's Mansion 3 and The Origami King... but then this appears...
And the rumors about the 3D Mario collection might be true. oooh my wallet is gonna suffer a lot...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

My only query at the moment is where all the other characters are at - Toad and Yoshi is cool and all, but where's Peach and the real hero Luigi?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They all look great; even though I didn’t grow up with Nintendo, they look appealing. I hope this isn’t a Dimensions Part 2 for them and is successful.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I love this I need them all

Gravatar
By in Poland,

The only good are the blindbags. I can see them being 3$ online. I will but them all just for pieces!

Gravatar
By in Austria,

What? Children still not tired of just swooshing the ugly Mario figurine around?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The 71361 character pack, looks like it’s going to packaged like the CMF series, and it has series 1 on the bag (image on insta)

Gravatar
By in Israel,

The more I look at these the less I like them.
You know, as a kid I never played with LEGO for the "challenge" (trying to balance Mario on a slide, etc.), I played because I liked creating new stories and worlds, or expanding the ones I already made. And when talking with other AFOLs I discovered it was actually the same reason for many other kids to like LEGO.
I don't think this theme is a good platform to eplore Mario's world at all. The builds are generally just paths, whenever you see a building it's probably going to be just an empty facade (e.g the castle).
So this theme is not for me at all, maybe other people will like it, I don't know, I'm eager to see how they will sell (especially since LEGO is getting even more expensive as of late).

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The sets look fun and colourful, but it is not a theme for me. I hope someone creates one big Mario World with all the sets and characters and then posts that.

Gravatar
By in Romania,

The character packs are kinda neat, but the bigger sets are gonna be completely useless without the Mario figure from the 60$ starter set.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Idk, the whole theme seems to be at least 25 years late. As a kid, in the 8/16 bit era of mario, I would have LOVED to get some of these sets. Now, they don't interest me as an adult, as I wouldn't PLAY with the toys. I don't know if today's kids are that much into 2d-Mario. As LEGO models, the sets don't do much for me and are therefore much too expensive. Just look at the content of the starter pack. But the decorated designs look nice.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Tempted to buy most if not all of these sets, I really hope that these are price decently though.

Love the blind bags as well.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I want all of it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Some elements are nice but it all looks a bit to Duplo to me. I prefer smaller Mario characters made from smaller bricks: https://flic.kr/p/258jaax

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Interesting how they renamed Bullet Bill into Boomer Bill. I guess it's to keep Lego kid-friendly.

I now wonder if Nintendo will follow suit.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm still a big Super Mario fan and play it al lot with my son. Although the sets look really familair, I really don't understand why anyone would buy it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Still not interested, despite being a huge Mario fan, but I have to commend them for not sticking to just the NSMB series. Whomps, King Boo, Peepas, and Mario's house are all pulled from different places and I love it.

The character packs are the only things from this theme so far that I'd consider buying, but I wish they didn't look so... square...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Future sets with a perceptual 30% discount on Amazon.

It's just referring to the big ones, although, yeah, it's a bit weird, considering the ACTUAL name is "Banzai Bill".

Gravatar
By in Canada,

These look great and all, but can somebody explain to me why the Canadian Shop Site keeps sending me to Mexico or somewhere else whenever I click on Super Mario or Dots? It kicks me out of my region and sends me to another region. What is the deal with that?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Still not a fan of this theme. I'd rather play the games themselves.

**wanders off to dig up his old NES**

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm surprised they haven't done a set with Luigi in it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Mario is very nostalgic for me. I remember when the NES came out and we got it for Christmas. And honestly with the release of this game at first I wasn’t interested. But with all of this expansion now I am intrigued! The character packs are great. I will still wait to see people’s reviews though.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

We just got the official announcement in Australia and the prices, oh the prices!! You can get a UCS ISD at discount cheaper then you can get all these on release day - coming in at just over $850AUD. Wasn't interested in them to start with and would run a mile from now if was even vaguely thinking about getting any. Would have to be a hard core fan with a nice bank account or well off parents if a child. If you are spending that much on toys for your child, congrats on doing well in life and stop spoiling your kids so much lol!! Just kidding :P

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think it's hilarious that each of these boxes depicts Mario interacting with the sets. As if he were a ghost or a spirit. And yet ... boxes state "LEGO Mario is not included". You gotta buy the big starter course, too. Sorry, kids!

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

I'll keep my hopes of seeing minifigure scale sets of this theme.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Is Mario only in the set with Baby Bowser?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wasn't that impressed with the early sets but they are doing a good job of drawing me in, bit by bit. I was hoping to hate these but as a massive mario gamer I fear I will struggle to stay away...I might just have to persuade the kids they like them so they can fill their Christmas lists with them. I think the PS5 is gonna win that race tho...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great to see the full line of sets, but am I the only one who's in the dark about how you actually "play" the game?? Curious as to how that all works, is there a video or article on that yet?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'll wait for the Great Giana Sister Sets from L***N ;)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

why does everyone seem to have their only memories about Nintendo with NES and SNES? aren't there any people like me who grew up with the Switch?
Plus, the starter set costs the same as a first-party Switch game (60€ in Italy)... I guess I'll go over Luigi's Mansion 3.

Sadly all of the stickers on the characters are pre-applied. I don't know how easy they will be to get off though.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Am I alone in not actually understanding this concept? Perhaps I've missed something. I understand Mario interacts with the course, okay, but is there a game that dictates how he moves, or is it just a push-along the track type thing to see how he reacts at various points?

Well, considering the Switch is just three years old... X-D

But yeah, I'd love to see some guys who grew up with the modern games voice their opinions! Anyone else here started with a Gamecube and Super Mario Sunshine...?

I've been wondering that as well. What's the point? Is it just a figure that reacts to where you place him?

There's a bullet bill in the character pack, it's smaller and has arms. I assume it will still be called bullet bill. The big ones had different names, like in Super Mario World the gigantic ones were Banzai Bills. I'm not sure if there have been others called boomer before.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Character Packs seem like something that would be in a small blind bag, like CMFs. Would this be considered a minifigure series? I can tell that they would be in polybag form, but will they be randomly assorted?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Fodder said:

The stickers are pre-applied and not intended to be removable, so you'd have to replace those tiles with your own.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Do any of these sets have an Albatoss? That was one of my favorite baddies.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it all looks good and well designed as one expects from LEGO and Nintendo, but like a few others here I'm thinking what's the point after a few plays. I'm interested to know what area space all sets connected would take..

As someone who spent a lot of time with Super Mario way back when, some of it lures me in but mostly I'll pass. Besides, I'm still counting the costs from Dimensions!

It wouldn’t make any sense to sell Mario with each set.

There are a ton of Mario games from NES to the Switch. I don’t think this is limited to fans of a certain era.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I kinda want Mario's House just for that Yoshi build...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now we’re cooking with gas!
These sets are much better than most of the initial reveal to me. So many of them seem to have a, you know, actual structure where you can glance at it and tell what it’s supposed to be. It feels more cohesive when you have something like that around the course, and not being as large as say Bowser’s Castle makes it easier to not look like everything is spaced apart. The sets still need mini figures in my opinion, but I love how you have a variety of scenarios to put Mario in along with more recognizable locations from the game.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love Mario so I'll be getting them all eventually. My biggest 2 gripes are I never got a chance to get the Monty Mole & Super Mushroom promo so day 1 I'll be paying eBay prices and wondering who will have the 2 exclusives and how available they will be. I was a huge Brickheadz fan until they started doing limited Target exclusives and stopped buying due to my inability to get those sets.

I would also hazard a guess that Luigi is being held back for next waves starter set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

At first I wasn’t totally behind the idea this theme presented, but after seeing these expansions I’m 100% on board.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The designs are brilliant but the prices are not collector or kid friendly for sets that are strictly bricks and pieces, non of which are specialized like minifigs or accessories. I'd be 100% on board with Mario World minifigs but I see the point of building the 10 character packs from bricks.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

As someone who enjoys playing with level editors, or with dice, cards, paper, etc, to make my own games, I love what LEGO+NINTENDO are trying out here and want many of these sets. Among these newly revealed sets, Mario's House, Desert Pokey, and the Character pack are my favorites.

While there's already a decent amount of variety here, I can't wait to see how they're going to expand in the future.

However, some of the prices are hard to deal with, so I'll have to wait for promotions or sales.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Definitely looking for a review on this as I still don’t understand its appeal. If Lego ever failed at a good opportunity to market this to AFOL this would be the one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Way too many sets (i.e. $ matters) for ppl aiming to "collect all characters made" :(
Even though those exclusive pieces/parts are attractive to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll admit the idea seemed interesting at first, but unless these things have like a $0.025 price/piece ratio Lego's not gonna sell any of these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

these are good, but the price is a little bit steep

Gravatar
By in United States,

I -want- these to succede because I like Lego and I like Mario... but I'm just not seeing it. I hope their strategy works. Waiting for minifig scale.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will like to ask lego why all the super mario Characters have Square ish faces????

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@TheLegoFan said:
"I will like to ask lego why all the super mario Characters have Square ish faces????"

I suspect part of it was to ensure that they could keep the number of specialized molds for enemies to a minimum, while also making sure that they didn't look out-of-place next to characters like Mario and Toad. I've seen a lot of folks express wishes that the sets featured standard minifigs, but I think that approach would have probably ended up much more reliant on character-specific sculpting to keep all the enemies looking authentic and recognizable at that scale.

Of course, another factor that I think I've seen mentioned in an interview somewhere is that the Mario figure was designed to be pretty much as compact as possible while still having room for all the electronic bits. Considering that things like battery boxes tend to be squarish, making his overall design (no pun intended) more rounded would probably require him to be even larger, which would end up driving up the cost of the other builds.

Anyway, super impressed (again, no pun intended!) with a lot of these builds! I think LEGO did a great job coming up with new parts that would allow them to make a lot of different types of characters and levels. It does a great job adapting a LEGO building experience to the somewhat cartoonish, bubbly look of classic Super Mario scenery. It helps a lot that LEGO building and Super Mario level design have a similar sort of "modularity".

I can imagine a lot of potential for even more expansion sets in future waves, and potentially even for other player character figures like Luigi that expand the gameplay possibilities even further. It's definitely a bit of a gamble to approach the design of this theme in such an unprecedented fashion, but it seems like LEGO put a lot of thought into making sure that it truly brought together the most playful and engaging aspects of the Mario play experience AND the LEGO play experience. I hope this theme does well and paves the way for more Mario products in the future!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I only want Shy Guy, so of course he doesn't come in the ONE set of the theme that I like (the Toad one)

ROFL

That's like asking why people only have LEGO memories about Classic Space, Castle and Pirates and if there aren't any people who grew up with Hidden Side.
Ask again in twenty years, but I doubt many will remember stuff like Hidden Side by then.
;-)

By in United States,

Nice explanation video of how it works. A little damning of Lego for not offering paper instructions or creative direction for kids.

https://youtu.be/FetXImiV-wY

Gravatar
By in United States,

Some of these look interesting for parts. Without seeing prices I don't know if it's worth considering seeking any out just for the parts. I played a few of the games years ago when my nieces were little on the rare occassions that they spent any time with me. I'll be happily spending my money on the Harry Potter sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I continue to not understand the appeal or intended audience for these sets.

I enjoy Mario, I enjoy Lego, seemed like a natural combo, and we’ve seen now several successful translations of video games to Lego.

But something about this aesthetic, which seems to go out of its way to not look or feel like Lego, and with more focus on playability in a theme that I think would benefit from more focus on collectability, I just cannot get on board. No judgment to anyone it’s working for, I just don’t get it.

I think maybe the lack of traditional minifigs and minifig scaling is the biggest curveball for me?

Gravatar

The character packs/blind bags look fantastic, my favourite sets in the series by a large margin!

You can remove the tiles on the shells too. newelementary has a close look at all the new parts:

By in United States,

@MugenLazlo:
If they're willing to make more molds, the Mario outfit recognition system can accommodate 6! different outfits (that's 720 for those who don't want to multiply it out). Of course, Luigi wears blue overalls just like Mario, so it would be the electronic part that would need to be molded in a different color. Give it time, and a successful sales record, and it'll probably happen. Or it'll end up hanging out with Dimensions Year 3.

@JCool:
Indications are that this will be a timed game. You do something to activate the countdown timer, and then tap Mario on the different "spaces" as fast as possible. Mario registers each type of space, and adjusts your score accordingly. Some will give you coins, others will cause you harm if you linger too long, and others won't do anything at all. When time runs out, your score is finalized. So, in terms of maximizing your score, being able to buy _EVERYTHING_ works in your favor, as you will have access to more lucrative spaces.

What we don't know yet is how free-form this system will be. The fact that this stuff is all in an app suggests that you'll need to build a virtual copy of your level so the app knows where you are. We don't know if it'll allow you to cherrypick just the best spaces and leave out anything dangerous, or if each set will be treated as a cohesive unit where you have to include the hazards to get the rewards.

@gabri_ves:
Sure. They're still growing up. And if they live in the US, they're probably not legally allowed to have a registered account if it requires the collection of any personal contact info.

@Gataka:
_ALL_ stickers can be removed. It just depends on how aggressive you want to get. And whether you care about the condition of the sticker afterwards.

To be fair, I grew up with the Wii, and just last year got back into videogames. That's another reason I'm pretty excited for Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga (obviously the main hype for me goes for Switch games, but other consoles exclusives, like Persona 5 are really cool too!)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

@AustinPowers I guess most people dropped out of videogames when the PS1 and the N64 launched. That's the main reason there could be a 3D Mario collection coming this year (SM64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 & 2, 3D World Deluxe), to regain attention from old people who seem to not care anymore about videogames and focus on their nostalgia.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

It’s just paving the way to Zelda isn’t it.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nintendo should do a lego mario game for its console as well.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@AustinPowers: Why would today's kids be any more likely to forget about Hidden Side in 20 years than kids growing up in the late 90s/early 2000s? Because I still encounter plenty of AFOLs who grew up in around the same generation that I did, and who still have nostalgic memories for themes like Insectoids, Rock Raiders, Slizer/Throwbots, Alpha Team, Drome Racers, etc. And I think we can probably agree that most of those haven't aged well at all in terms of either the qualiity of their builds OR the quality of their media tie-ins.

Needless to say, kids' nostalgia when they get older doesn't really tend to be any pickier than their tastes or interests when they're still young. After all, nostalgia is often rooted just as much or more in that childlike sense of wonder that can make just about ANYTHING seem endlessly fascinating than in what the childhood interests in question were actually like!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers:
Hidden Side is a cheap comparison. Wait one more year (hit an even 20, so as to be completely fair) and ask how fondly people remember Bionicle sets. Give it another decade or so and do the same thing with Ninjago.

Split the Space and Castle themes up into their respective subthemes, and they don't fare as well as the combined groups do. Every Space and Castle fan has their own favorites, like Blacktron I or Forestmen, and others that they're not so fond of, like M-Tron who are chumps.
