Storage solutions: DM Brick Studios
Posted by Huw,Dries, who runs the DM Brick Studios YouTube channel shows us his studio and LEGO room.
I am 40 years old, living close to Brussels, and my passion began around the age of 6. While I was discovering most of the small city sets (different vehicles, police station, hospital,…) the Lego brand transformed from a classic toy series in the eighties into a more experimental period in the nineties. Nowadays my passion is still something that is present every day.
Collecting, building, reading articles and watching vlogs and organising my Lego room has become my favourite time spent.
What I especially like in my Lego room are the white Billy closets to display my Lego collection, I choose white shelving, i order to have the colours of the Lego sets as much visible as I can.
I sorted them by theme, like e.g. all the Architecture sets together, all the modular buildings in 1 row, vintage cars together.
I made the choice not to build a kind of city combination with streets and so on, in my opinion it looks to busy. I'd rather have them organised by theme.
For the Modular Houses collection I like to keep them on top of the shelves in one row to accentuate the length of it.
For my minifigure collection I’ve reworked an IKEA Ribba frame with tailor made shelves in it. In total, I can display 270 minifigures.
Some of my Star Wars sets I try to keep them as much visible. Therefor I use black IKEA tables. Since this collection is growing, I tend to have them as much in the open space, so I can enjoy them from above and other sides.
For the Star Wars minifigures I keep them separate in a Perspex cover box.
I’m very keen on the vintage sets like smaller vehicles from the 80’s, because of their simplicity. I like to put them together with more recent sets, in order to see the evolution in the sets.
The biggest closets are reserved for my most precious builds. The classic ones like the Yellow Castle and the Galaxy Explorer. The entire back wall features as background for my weekly YouTube channel
Besides the sets, I try to keep as much of the original boxes on the lower shelves and I’m always looking for some nice Lego books, containing a brief overview of the history.
Since I’m more like an AFOL instead of a MOC builder, I don’t have that much of brick storages, but I implemented some shelves underneath my desk in order to have the bricks I do have as much as organised as possible. I use plastic modules of Curver with transparent draws and I organise the bricks by colour, by size, by usage (wheels, heads, trees, windows, …)
Next to that, I have some additional drawers for all the instructions, which are organised by year or theme.
As an extra my room is lightened by a light with a Lego lampshade, made by my kids...

Love the lamp shade, i may steal this idea :)
Nice cleam room. I Like it. I think black shelves work great. Makes the sets look better.
I like that you let each set have its own space. Most try to cram as much as possible on a shelf which results in an overloaded and messy look.
I like it so much! I salute the more human space (or better, the more "bricksy" space) you gave for each set.
Congratulations to your kids for the lamp!
Love the white and cleanliness of this
Pleases my OCD. Very neat.
Love it all!! Actually quite jealous.
Your collection is so easy to see due to the clean, spacious aesthetic in your studio. It looks great! The lampshade stands out as a creative piece of art when contrasted with the linear look of the rest of the space. It's got a wild, fun feel to it. What an original idea! Your kids are MOC builders:) Thanks for participating in the series!
Nice & clean...proving that less is more, rather than the over-cluttered displays we've seen in others.
It's a truly relaxing environment. Everything is so neatly organized. I can even hear the classical music playing at the background.
I love the restraint put on display here. Those classic sets really shine when there is enough empy space around then.
What a great collection! Really organized, and I love the classic vehicles. Really cool!!
And that lamp shade is really cool!
A wonderfully curated collection of old and new so your collection tells a story.
I think less is more when displaying Lego as a cluttered display detracts for the quality of the sets and becomes a Cacophony of colour and dust.
I love the Lampshade. Thank you for sharing with us!
Love the lampshade but... exposure to light and heat can be harmful to LEGO bricks!
These displays where each set has enough space to stand out on its own look so much better than those where all sets are crammed together.
Absolutely beautiful!
@Gataka - most of us would usually agree with you on this, but on this occasion I think you’d accept any damage to those bricks as a pay off for having such a wonderful creation from your own children. I know I certainly would!
I’m about to start work on my own Lego room, but I doubt the ‘storage solutions’ articles will still be featuring on Brickset by the time I’m finished. No matter, I’m still getting inspiration from seeing what others have done :-)
Very well thought-out collection and neatly organized!
What I especially like is the idea to make a minifigure display out of a IKEA picture frame! Could you explain how you did it? Is it just wooden slats for crossbars? How do the minifigures hold?

I hope that the storage solutions articles stick around for the long haul. I can see the enthusiasm for sharing solutions dropping enough to no longer warrant daily posts, but there's gotta be enough people out there in the world who want to share their solutions to justify at least a weekly or monthly article after they slow down.
@Huw:
just out of curiosity, how far out do you have these articles already lined up? Or has the well begun to dry up?
I have about a week's worth in hand.
I think your clean space is very relaxing. Wonderful presentation, from the Ribba frame to the glass cabinets.
As others have said, so clean! What's mounted on the tripod in front of your desk?
I like how many people commented on the lamp. We need more lego built furniture/appliances.

And so do I... the lamp is really amazing
Love your idea of IKEA frame for minifigs! I may still that idea, but one with the glass for me. And drawers just for instructions, nice
