Storage solutions: CmdFox

After a couple of neatly curated and modest displays, Konstantin aka CmdFox, show us his LEGO room from the other end of the spectrum:

I have been collecting Lego Star Wars since 2009. In 2015, we finally moved into our own house and my dream became reality: My own Lego room. My wife is very understanding of my hobby so it wasn’t as big a discussion as you might think!

I started by having the shelves custom-made for the room. They go all around the walls and the plan was to sort all the sets by appearance in the movies. For example, in Star Wars the first thing you see is the Tantive IV, so the Episode 4 section should start with it.

I soon realised that I had way too many sets to display them in that order. So, I just tried to sort them by movie, TV show or era they belong to. Even that proved to be difficult as some sets are really high and I had to place them on top of the shelves.

Another “problem” that occurred was that I started to collect other themes as well. It began with Lord of the Rings, Monster Fighters and Super Heroes. Then came Speed Champions and of course larger Creator sets, Brickheadz and Ideas. I am running out of room – a problem many AFOLs can relate to I guess!

My ultimate goal is to own every Star Wars Set, that has ever been created and was publicly available. Up to 2008 I have already succeeded – I am not missing a single Set! (Some 2020 Sets are missing but I only buy sets at a discount, so I will eventually get them.)

Concerning the other themes, I stopped collecting Super Heroes and Speed Champions in 2019 and I also only buy sets from the other themes that I really find appealing. For Star Wars I really buy ever set, even those I find ugly – and there have been a few over the years!

What I also like collecting is SDCC special Sets or Minifigures like the gold C-3PO. They all still are in their original sealed boxes or bags and I don’t think I will ever open them.

I also have every CMF except Mr Gold – the price is just too ridiculous and back in the day I visited every store I know but couldn’t find any! I keep my CMFs in IKEA Ribba frames.

The last part of my collection is my city. The table is also custom-made and is exactly eight 32x32 plates wide. Below the table I store my other train sets and the instructions. I flatten all the boxes and keep them in my attic. I think eventually I will have to throw them away but the day has not yet come!

As for parts, I never dismantle any sets and build something new (I am not very creative) and so I only have very small surplus parts collection that I sort by colour.

Concerning the dust problem – there isn’t really such a bad problem as only I usually enter the Lego room and even that not so often or long. Therefore, there isn’t much dust. The sets have been on display since 2015 and have never been dusted! The Sets in my office collect some dust of course, so I use a Swiffer to dust them now and then.

By in Turkey,

I hear of this Ikea Ribba a lot, as a CMF display. I'll take a look at it. I was a bit like you, but in a smaller scale. My aim was to have at least two sets from each theme, so that no set is alone in my collection.

Wow! Having every single Star Wars set is dedication to the task. Congrats on that! Best of luck getting this year's sets on sale as I went birthday gift shopping yesterday and both Walmart and TRU have marked a lot of their Lego above LEGO.com prices by a dollar or two. Good to hear your room stays relatively dust free so you can spend more time just enjoying your collection. Thanks for participating in the series!

By in Russian Federation,

Dang... I stopped with Star Wars last year because of rare minifigures collecting. I have collected everything produced by 2019 but like 50 SW sets. And I was going to get rid of the collection. And now I take a look at your Lego room and something deep inside of me tells I shouldn't sell my SW collection.
Thanks for your write up. It's amazing true AFOL room. Keep track of what you like! Well done

By in Germany,

Both versions of UCS Millennium Falcon side by side is quite a wow factor in its own right. And that's not even taking into account the UCS Star Destroyer next to them.

Impressive collection! Do you also have the 2002 UCS Star Destroyer? I use to have that set, really regretting selling it.

By in Australia,

Amazing collection. How do you accommodate the city for the new expert building every year? Looks like it's full.
Do you collect the Xmas sets?
I collect CMF, poly bags, Xmas, seasonal, expert buildings and try to get the limited editions.

Hi,

Yes, I also collect the X-Mas Sets and Fair Ground as well. I have all the Modulars and the table is 64 32x32 plates wide - there is room for some more modulars. I just have to rearrange some other parts of the city.
