Storage solutions: Charleslegoguy
Posted by Huw,I'll let Charles introduce himself...
Hello everyone! I am Charles, and I am a TFOL. I have a relatively medium- sized collection compared to the other Brickset members, totalling roughly 31,000 – 35,000 pieces. I store my LEGO in a variety of ways, and I have changed my methods over time.
At first, I used these MANO craft/toolboxes. They are relatively easy to store and come in a few sizes. I find these toolboxes somewhat hard to access when building, because there are multiple steps involved when trying to get a part out.
Taking the box from the shelf, opening the 2 latches, opening the cover, and getting the part I need. This is not a very efficient method when building compared to using drawers. The advantage of using these would be that they are easy to transport, so you could put a small selection of spare parts to take to LEGO exhibitions, etc.
For small parts, I use Livinbox small parts drawers. I live in Asia, so Akro-mils drawers are not very accessible to my region without paying shipment that costs as much as the drawers itself! Livinbox drawers are very similar to Akro-mils drawers, possibly even better in some ways! They are made from polystyrene, so they are very sturdy and transparent. Each set of drawers come with enough dividers for every drawer. They come in lots of different sizes.
Finally, this is more of a concept idea, but I think it would be the most practical to put the Livinbox drawers inside an IKEA ALEX storage cabinet. I think this would be the best method, because I can access all the little drawers at once and that I can see everything at once.
Moreover, I’d like to share a DIY storage solution that I made when sorting. I used a computer monitor box and cut out paper grid- dividers. I will not go into too much detail with how I made them in this article, but if enough people tell me they want a tutorial in the comments, then I would be happy to write one and share it with everyone on my website or maybe here on Brickset.
Here are some pictures of my MOCs:

Great mocs, very inventive!
I don't have enough pieces to justify a drawer system but it sure is more convinient than boxes with latches.
I like your mocs. :-)
Looks good, Charles. Your MOC's are really interesting to look at. Very creative. Thank you for including them in your article!
Someone down to earth.
Nice! Thanks for sharing.
