Polybag competition winners

Posted by ,

We had a terrific response to our polybag competition with something like 500 entries, on Flickr, Instagram and also submissions sent in by email.

The judges (myself, CapnRex101, MeganL, Alice and, last but certainly not least, ex-LEGO designer Tiago Catarino) have spent the last few weeks deliberating and I can now announce the results.

We have awarded prizes in two categories: polybags with minifigures and those without. The winners will each receive a 40407 Death Star II Battle and two runners-up in each category will receive a LEGO goodie bag.

So, without further ado, the winners are...

Polybags containing a minifigure category

1st: Aquaman's Sea Dragon by Dan Ko

The judges said:

  • Tiago: The most common type of polybag you usually see are IP related ones.Considering all aspects that go into designing a real one, this is the best entry in my opinion! It has a great character, and the side model is just the right size! Extra points for a very nicely presented and photographed model.
  • Chris: The outstanding use of a Green Lantern power battery really sets Aquaman's seahorse apart from other models.
  • Huw: Beautifully designed, nice parts usage and a sought-after minifig. A worthy winner!

2nd: The Magician by Teazza

The judges said:

  • Megan: This is wonderfully colourful and fun! By the very nature of the build, a terrific assortment of parts are included, and to great effect. I love the story it tells.
  • Huw: It's a riot of colour and action! The pieces look to be precariously connected but that's part of its appeal.

3rd: The Flash Cosmic Treadmill by LEGO Images

The judges said:

  • Megan: I'm not much of a superhero collector, but I love this piece. The humour included is great, and the colour contrast between the red Flash and the grey treadmill is fantastic.
  • Tiago: I'm a sucker for super heroes, and speed based ones like Flash are some of my favourites. This scene with the treadmill is just perfect!

Polybags not containing a minifigure category

1st: Jurassic Park Gate! by nicolas_builds

The judges said:

  • Tiago: Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favourite movies so this entry is a no-brainer for me! The size feels right and the part selection is also super cool. I would buy a couple of this myself!
  • Megan: I haven't watched many Jurassic Park movies, but this build was immediately recognizable to me. Terrific parts usage, and I'm surprised a polybag like this wasn't offered when the larger set came out.
  • Chris: I love the bright colours of this model and its accuracy is impressive, especially above the gates.

2nd: Mini Moai by Veyniac

The judges said:

  • Tiago: If Architecture ever considers making polybags they should start taking notes here! This made me smile and its brilliantly designed, well done!
  • Megan: Through terrific parts usage, this is a fantastic resemblance to the original Moai. I love this because it is a great rendition, but also so different to anything we've seen in a polybag before.
  • Chris: I appreciate the simple elegance of this model, nicely recreating the famous Moai from Easter Island.

3rd: Pua by Brix just4me

The judges said:

  • Chris: This model definitely captures the adorable nature of Pua and really looks as though LEGO would release it.
  • Tiago: This is great! The character is super cute and faithful to the original source and the size for a polybag feels just right! I'm sure many kids and adults alike would love a copy or two!

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who entered, who took the time to build and submit their models and, I hope, had fun while doing so.

We'll be in touch with the winners to arrange to ship their prizes in due course.

Congratulations to all the winners above!

I can easily imagine their entries as real polybags by LEGO. Had they been actual polybags, I would have sought the two superhero ones.

Are instructions available for all the winning ones?

Well done,
I'd love to see instructions for all of these,
I really want that Moai on my desk!

By in United Kingdom,

LEGO should take these up and give a commission to those who designed them. Have you presented it to them? Many of us would buy them and many more hundreds around the world. Great designs, well done.

Congratulations to the winners! I would have bought all of those and will try my hand at copying them. I can imagine one of the baby dinosaurs outside that gate.

By in Puerto Rico,

Man these are great entries and while I am salty at how I lost two competitions in a row I am more than happy to have lost to such amazing entries both here and in the Ideas vacation one.

That Jurassic Park entry gate would be finished off perfectly with one of the baby velociraptor parts standing in for a microscale T-Rex!

Congratulations to all the winners! This was a tough competition with many excellent entries. If anyone is interested, I could definitely make instructions for my model (the Classic Space rover), and I also think instructions for the winning models would be excellent.

Congratulations to the winners! There were so many great entries into this contest, so many nice techniques and food for thought for future builds. I hope Brickset does something like this again!

Wow!!! Very happy for my second place! Congratulations to all the winners!
As you can imagine there are no institutions for my Magician, it is more a “way to build”, but for more info just contact me in instagram teazzateazza
Thanks to Brickset and all the judges!

I thought my submission was pretty good (albeit quite a bit niche - UK) but on seeing the final selection, I must recognise that those are much better and proper candidates for polybag. Congratulations to all the winners!!!

I adore polybags. Honestly this article just makes me want more highlights of fan-made models especially at this scale. I'll have to take a look at the ones that didn't win sometime

Pua was my favorite. It looked very accurate to a real LEGO set. But all the winners looked great. Good work everyone!
