It's our 20th anniversary today!

Posted by ,

On 14th July 2000 at 08:51 BST I announced on Lugnet that Brickset.com was live!

Those of you that were around at the time, or who have read about the history of the site, will know that it actually started life a few years before in the early days of the Internet as a 'personal home page' on my ISP's server, and later at Brickset.co.uk. However, having registered this domain on 10th July and set things up in the following days, I consider 14/7/2000 to be the birth of the site as it is today.

It was not the first LEGO fan site, or indeed the first LEGO database, but it's certainly been one of the most enduring. Others that were around at the turn of the century, for example Lugnet, Peeron, and Brickshelf may still be live but are now a mere shadow of their former selves. In fact the only LEGO fan site I can think of, which is a similar age and still flourishing, is BrickLink, which is also celebrating its 20th anniversary this month.

I believe the reason it's survived for so long, and why it's the #1 most visited LEGO fan website [1] is because of you, our members. It's not just a news site and database, it's a thriving community of people with a shared interest: the amount of user-contributed content we've published recently is testament to that. So, I'd like to thank all 237,000 of you for helping to make it what it is today.

We have some exciting things lined up in celebration, most notably a tournament to determine what you consider to be the best set that's been released since the site was launched. We'll kick that off later today. We'll be publishing an updated history of the site, too.

We'd love to hear how and when you first discovered Brickset and what it means to you. Let us know in the comments!

[1]. According to Alexa. BrickLink has a higher ranking but it's no longer a fan-owned site.

Here's the original announcement on Lugnet:

Wow, time flies, happy anniversary! I discovered Brickset around 2008, and I was first a "silent reader" of the site, then according to my profile, I registered in 2014. For me, Brickset means THE source for everything LEGO, because it's not just a regular news site, and the huge amount of guest posts lately made it even better! :) Keep up the great work, and all the best for the whole team behind Brickset!

By in Netherlands,

Congratulations!

I've been a member since 'before November 2010' (don't know the exact date). I really like that I can keep track of the Lego sets I own and the ones I still want.
What really appealed to me the first time I saw Brickset, was the intuitivity. The site worked fast, simple design and very accessible.

Till this day I promote Brickset to other Lego friends to keep track of their Lego collection.

By in Russian Federation,

I like Brickset news line. I was more a reader over past years since I fell into Lego. This year I wrote an article on rare minifigures to share my love for the best hobby in the world. I really wish Brickset to be more informative, more interesting and more readable lego fan web site. Happy birthday and thank you for everything

By in Australia,

Excellent! Congratulations Brisckset-ers :D

I think this site is successful because of YOU, Huw, to be honest.

You keep it fresh and updated with new features all the time, and this blog/news/reviews format always keeps us coming back for more. You're always moving, and you never let it go stale.

Plus your blog posts about whatever interesting thing (like the dissertation on Technic motorcycles, for example) are just really interesting. If it is worth reading, people will always come to read it. That's the key, I think.

It just follows that people will want to engage with good content, and suddenly you have a flourishing community.

Here's to another 20 years of Brickset!

By in United Kingdom,

I'm a TFOL and I used Brickset to find all of my Father's Lego sets. I then spent 2 years rebuilding every set he had as a kid. I think my proudest moment so far was when I presented galaxy explorer and the original yellow castle to my Father on his birthday last year. Thanks so much Huw you really helped make his day!

By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations Huw, I discovered Brickset when I was properly coming out of my Dark Ages (I had noodled around with a few Star Wars sets previously) and I had a week of annual leave and I decided to rebuild all my Classic Space sets. The instructions has long since gone and I needed to find copies of them and source some spare pieces - hence I discovered Brickset and Bricklink on the same day!

By in France,

Happy birthday Brickset! Even here on holiday by the ocean shore I come to see Lego news every morning, drinking my morning coffee. The very first thing I do on my device. Every day. Since I discovered the site when I slowly came out of my dark ages, 10 years ago, and started to come back deeper into Lego mania. I honestly think I came every single day since. In fact I don't see any reason why I couldn't came once a day at least since I discovered Brickset. Love it, it even grew better during (and somehow thanks to) the Covid closedown with new articles (new reviewers, storage articles and so on...) and I know it will still improve again in the future. Thank you Brickset team, huge thanks and bravos to Huw, and hugs from French Atlantic shore to all of you BS members.

Congratulations on 20 years.
I've only been a user since 2015 after my wife gave me 70802 for Christmas 2014 and I enjoyed building the set so much I started researching other sets to possibly buy which brought me here.
What a can of worms that was.
At least I had an ideal place to log all the sets that have been acquired since then so thanks @huw.
Love the site and visit virtually every day. Long may it continue.

By in United Kingdom,

Sincerely, thank you, Huw, Huwbot, and all the rest of the team.

The importance of this site was driven home to me this week when a bug made my entire collection (temporarily) disappear; honestly, I felt a little nauseous!

For me, such a reaction is a surely testament of how I feel about Brickset - love!

Will there be a prize for guessing that the winner of the tournament will be Café Corner or a Falcon...? ;-)

By in United Kingdom,

Happy birthday, Brickset - and thank you, Huw (and Capn Rex and Megan and the others), for this excellent website!

I registered in April 2013. My son would have just turned five and was building a collection that needed cataloguing in some way - but I suspect we stumbled across Brickset even before then.

While my son isn't entering a full-blown Dark Age any time soon, it's me who has the most need to still use Brickset. :)

By in United States,

Brickset is my first stop for everything Lego, it also is the best site for a set collection (for loose parts I use Rebrickable). It is the place where I first discovered that there were in fact many AFOLS like me. Ever since I came out of my dark ages around 2006, I must have visited the site tens of thousands of times.

Thank you Huw, thanks you everyone who contributed to this great site. Looking forward to the next twenty.

I've been a member since: 23 Jan 2016 02:45 to be exact, Biggest dread my wife has is the fact she bought me the Ecto 1 ideas set that sat on display for a couple of years then she bought me the Doctor Who ideas set for christmas when it came out and well now got a house full of Really Useful boxes filled to the max with lego :)

By in Portugal,

Congrats Huw! Since I've known Brickset to exist it has been a huge tool in my LEGO journey! By far the best and only database I use whenever I need to find a set or a part. This was also true when I was working for LEGO believe it or not! And I believe to this day a lot of model designers must still be using Brickset as opposed to internal LEGO databases.

Keep up the good work!

By in Canada,

Congratulations! It's so wonderful that you were able to take your hobby and, using the skills you have, turn it into a career for yourself and enrich the lives of thousands of people. That is quite a legacy! In May of 2018, I finally started buying Lego for myself after decades of buying it for other people and that June I came across Brickset. On July 9, 2018, my 13 year old cat got mauled by a neighbour's loose husky and her injuries took nearly all summer to heal. (Her back left leg was amputated.) Jubbies and I spent most of that hot summer in the cool basement reading Brickset (and watching Jangbricks) as she slowly healed. I learned so much about Lego through your database that summer. Also, I don't actually know any AFOL's so the community here at Brickset is quite important to me. Thank you very much!

Happy Birthday Brickset. I checked and I only joined in 2015, but it feels like much longer ago. I found the site in 2010 when I was coming out of my dark ages and keep reading the news and reviews. January 2015 must have been a busy time as I started laying out the last 5yrs sets I'd bought to add them to my owned list and then trying to work through the 70s/80s sets from my childhood. Its an invaluable resource.

I guess I have been lurking here since 2014 when a visit to the LEGO store at Disneyland saw me bring the Delorean home from my hols and I started searching around the net for what else had changed in the last 30 years.

Keep up the good work.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Congrats, this has been one of my most visited sites since I joined in 2018 and greatly helped with categorizing my sets and minifigs. As someone who also collect Halo construction toys though I just wish that other other brands have anything close to the depth of detail offered by Brickset.

By in United Kingdom,

Happy birthday to BrickSet and thank you very much to Huw for doing such a great job in creating and growing it!

I first came to BrickSet around 2008, I think, after seeing several mentions of it on the Eurobricks forums. I particularly enjoy the articles, reviews, news, records/pictures of sets and the comments, and visit most days.

I never got into the cataloguing function of the site though. By the time I discovered BrickSet, I had already been an AFOL for 15 years and it would have taken too much time to work out all the sets I had had since then. So I never engaged with that side of the site.

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

This site has been instrumental in fueling my interest in the Lego hobby. From organizing my collection to determining what sets I want to collect and what new parts are available it's been a fantastic resource. Perhaps most important are the real-life and virtual friends I have made in the forums and by connecting to my local LUG. Thanks Huw and Co.!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Congratulations on this massive achievement. With real quality content and an open and honest attitude, you and your team survived all tough times and managed to remain on the forefront of the community. I take my hat off.

I only discovered Brickset in 2009 when I emerged from my dark age, but since, it is my primary source for anything Lego.

By in Singapore,

Honestly, I don't think I knew about Brickset before my Dark Age. LUGNET, yeah, Peeron, uh huh, BZPower, natch, BrickLink, indeed... but somehow I missed the ball on Brickset completely. I have no childhood/teenage memory of it. I only came to know about it around the end of my Dark Age at the start of 2018, when I was just about ready to get back into the hobby.

How exactly did I discover the site then? By watching JANGBRiCKS.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’d say the reason the site survived and is thriving is because of the high attention to detail, the fantastic layout and design, making it very user friendly. Keep up the great work!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was so happy to find this site when I got back into Lego and not only because of the database and reviews but because it showed me that I wasn't so alone in being an Adult fan of lego. I'd just bought the Doctor Who ideas set on a whim as a bit of fun and really enjoyed it so I went looking for a site that would show what was available and found Brickset been an avid user ever since. Thank you for making such a great site and congratulations on 20yrs.

My Profile says that I joined in December 2010, but in reality I had been using the site for a bit before that too, just as I was coming out of my Dark Ages.

Happy birthday, Brickset!

Thank you, Huw, that you give credits to the user of Brickset as well, but most of all the website is still alive and in best shape because of YOU personally and the team behind you!
When a person puts a lot of time, money and enthusiasm into one special interest, it's the best requirement to have a long time success even on/in the internet.
And in times of webpage hopping and briefly attention you have managed to have the important news spot on and on spot! Congratulations - it's more than deserved.

Personally I'm browsing the site for around 17 years now.

Happy birthday!

I've become aware of Brickset much, much later. I came out of my (very long) dark ages around Christmas 2013. Seems it took less than a month from that time to find Brickset (via some Google search for a Lego set or similar, I'd suspect) and becoming a member (on 17th Jan 2014 according to my profile). So i'ts been a good 6 years of daily visits for me now.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh wow, congratulations Brickset!

I... quite honestly don't even know when / why / how I discovered the site; which is odd because I usually have a good memory for miscellaneous details like that. I *thiiiiiiink* I was probably googling for details of a specific set, and turned up the Brickset database for it as one of the results. I feel like I took to browsing further, was very impressed by what I found - particularly the ability to keep track of my own collection - and filed the site away as a resource for future reference.

That looks like it must have been in 2008, since that's when some of my earliest (and awful, but shh!) reviews were posted on here. I kept a comprehensive record of my collection here, and it became my go-to site whenever I needed to reference sets or minifigures, but I didn't follow the news on the front page or anything... indeed, I don't think I even realised that was a big part of the site at all.

After I entered my 'dark age' years, I used the site as my primary reference guide when I sold off a lot of my old sets, to make sure I was listing them all correctly, and the database kinda became my place to visit whenever I was looking for a nostalgia trip. I became a more frequent visitor in 2016, when the news of the Disney collectable minifigure series drew me out of said 'dark age'; but only began checking the site news daily, as I do now, with the addition of the Random Set of the Day feature. It's one of my favourite things to see on the front page: I love reading reminiscences (or snide comments!) about old sets, and sharing my own too.

Thanks, Huw and team, for keeping this place running for so long! :D

By in Ireland,

Bricklink may be turning 20 but of course back in 2000 it wasn't Bricklink. It started life as BrickBay but eBay's corporate lawyers didn't like that name...
Anyone remember Auczilla?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I started visiting Brickset pretty much at the exact same time that I got properly into LEGO collecting almost 3 years ago. I've always liked to keep track of everything that I collect, from books to video games to DVDs, to ensure that I don't double-buy anything that I might see cheap while I'm physically shopping. I was looking for a way to do just that with my foundling LEGO collection which was more efficient than just a Microsoft Word document, and Brickset was just perfect!

I then explored the site a bit more and found the collection analysis, all the additional details in the database and the Bricklink links. And then the news and articles produced on the home page. Brickset truly is a treasure trove of goodies and an essential site for any LEGO collector. It's easily my most visited site and I'm proud to see Brickset as the first recommended site whenever I open a new Google Chrome tab on my phone.

I almost forgot: Happy Birthday Brickset!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Congrats Huw & Team!

I first stumbled across Brickset on April 01 (following Google search results) and saw posts about supporting MegaBloks, remember being quite confused for a while.

I think the question we all want answered though, is when's HuwBot's birthday?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Happy Birthday and all the Best for the next 20 years.

I may have come to an early Brickset which was, I think, mainly a database for minifigs and poly bags (?) - both of which I wasn't particularly interested. I have created an account in 2006.
I preferred to use Peeron to keep track of my sets at that time. After some dark grey period I discovered that new sets (2011 ...) are not covered by them. Therefore I put my data to Brickset when I increased my collection.
A few years later (2915) I started to write reviews (mainly) for current technic sets.

I found this site a few years ago as I got back into collecting LEGO once again after a 30 year absence. I love the articles, the reviews and being able to find out what is coming out. And I especially love being able to keep track of my families collection. Kudos for such a well run and informative website.

By in United States,

A well-deserved birthday to celebrate! Man, I've been affiliated with Brickset since at least the start of 2005. I even have saved an email I sent Huw back in May 2005 in response to his call for volunteer moderators as he made plans on making the site open to registering members. Though Huw responded, he fortuitously did not to follow-up with me on it (a good thing because I was just a 16 year-old kid at the time and was about to go away for the summer, where I definitely would not have had the time to devote to Brickset). I feel like I had to have "discovered" the site in 2004, but I can't be certain. Of LEGO fansites, I was super-involved in BZPower at the time and their once-thriving forums. But without BIONICLE, that site long ago fell to the wayside. As such, Brickset more and more became my sole LEGO fansite to visit regularly. Nowadays, it's really the only LEGO fansite I visit at all. It's essential to tracking my LEGO collection (far, far larger than it was, even in 2005) and for the vibrant AFOL community I've gotten to interact with. And personally, I'm glad I've now contributed something to this site other than just set reviews, in the form of my Featured Set of the Day articles.

Here's to another 20 years!

By in United States,

Happy 20th Birthday. I've only been a member since September 2018. I'm a TFOL with other distractions that sometimes pull me away from LEGO. But it's always exciting to hear of another set coming out. And while Brickset hasn't been the only LEGO fansite I've visited and still isn't, it's probably the best out there. I just catalogued my sets as I know them and while a modest collection, it's ever-growing and it's nice to know which ones I have. I'm not really the moc making guy as my 11 year old imagination has disappeared some. But all of these guest articles are so inspiring and I've found some good tips to help me find my place in LEGO building , something I've been trying to decide as I've been mostly a collector in recent months. In all just in the past half year this site has helped me discover myself and my likely future with LEGO. And that makes this the best LEGO fansite in eyes. Thankyou and Happy Birthday.

My user profile says I've been here since 2013, but I think that was when I finally registered - I'd been coming here for a few years prior to that. I've been quite pleased/honoured to be a contributor for the last few years :-)

July 14 is also National Mac and Cheese Day (here in the US). With that and it being Brickset Day, I think it may be the best day ever.

By in Brazil,

Brickset definitely helped me get over my dark age when I got back into LEGO. Had it not existed, I'd have probably waned back into a colorless, brickless adult life. So happy it was there, with its database showing how much fun LEGO still poured into the world and opening the door to a community of people connected to what is much more than a mere hobby.

Thanks @Huw and all the folks that make Brickset and hope you continue to thrive in the next 20 years as you did in the past 20!! And then again, and again, and again!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Congratulations Huw and Brickset.com!
I remember the announcement on Lugnet back at the beginning, and it was very exciting to me because of the expanding database. I believe I started keeping track of my collection by 2001 when I started cataloging all of my opened set instructions (and selling or shredding the extra copies) to the online database. The best part of Brickset for me has become the mobile device app for tracking owned vs wanted and even favorite sets. Brickset has made it easier to track my large collection, to browse future purchases, and to share highlights of Lego fun with people quickly (especially with the app).
Everything is awesome!

I first encountered Brickset in 2009 when I was just 12, and it brought to my attention the wealth of LEGO sets from the past I’d never been aware of. From that day onward, I truly became a LEGO fan. And 10 years on from that, I became a designer for the LEGO Group :) Thanks Brickset !

Well I was just 6 years old when Brickset launched. At school I used to be embarrassed to tell my friends about my dads LEGO collection and website, and in 2011 I made this account mainly to leave annoying comments... but look at me now! I am proud of what he does and how he turned his hobby into such a popular & valuable resource for you all.
Thanks for letting me be a part of it, Dad :) @Huw .

By in Germany,

Dear Huw and all the members of the Brickset family, I wish you a happy anniversary! May the wind be always in your back!

You can't even begin to imagine how much I value Brickset. It is the only website I visit each and every day. No other website has such a place in my heart. Even during the darkest times coming here has always managed to brighten up my day.

You have evolved this into such an invaluable tool for every fan of LEGO.

I certainly make no secret of my declining fondness for the LEGO Company as an entity, but that does not take away anything from my fondness for building with bricks, playing with LEGO with our kids, MOCing or simply enjoying looking at some of the built sets I have on display around the house.

Keep up the good work. And stay safe.
All the best.

Happy Birthday Brickset!

I think my first visit here was around early or mid 2003 after following a link from BZP I guess... What a surprise it was back then to discover all those promotional and US only sets that I never knew existed all these years!

Thanks to all for keeping it going :)

Don’t sell yourself short, @Huw. You are also a major reason why this site remains so popular while others have faded away. Your commitment to keeping the website modern and constant efforts to improve its functionality are nothing short of heroic. Thank you, sir.

Happy Anniversary Brickset!

I've been visiting this site starting around October 2012 when the Lord of The Rings theme brought me out of my prolonged dark age (circa 1985) when I ended up finding Brickset while researching for sites that tracked lowest Amazon pricing. To my delight I discovered a plethora of addition useful tools here!

But it wasn't until May 2015 that I registered as a member due to a contest Brickset was running at that time which required an user email address in order to contact any of the winners - I don't recall now what the contest prizes were and didn't end up winning any of them, but I was already a big winner for having the knowledge and discovery of such a great fan site as those of us visiting here on a regular basis know quite well!

I've stayed logged in ever since.

2001, most likely! The HP sets were new, and I was excited to find the knowledge of upcoming sets. My info says that I've been a member since before November 2010, so I have no idea, though God does, I'm sure... I can't believe I've been using this wonderful site for so long. It has been a blessing!

I can thank this site for pulling me out of my dark age in 2014. I remember telling my girlfriend at the time how I always wanted a skulls eye schooner as a child but never could save enough lawn mowing money before it retired. She wanted to see what it looked like so I googled it and first thing that came up was an entire database of every set ever made. Mind blown! I spent the next two months just looking at nostalgic sets as well as sets released during my dark age. Eventually I got my me and my brothers collection out of my parents basement and have been building ever since. Thanks for awesome resource and the hard work! Best site on the web!!

It was nearly 4 years ago I found you, this was when I was starting to get back into Lego Technic and found out on Facebook about a site which literally tells you everything you need to know about the brick, now I tell everyone about you ?? the sets have sure changed since my childhood and always use you on a daily basis for reference.
keep up the great work you do and
happy birthday ?? ??

By in Czechia,

Checkd my mailbox and found "Welcome to Brickset" email from 25.09.2007 My hobby just took off from that day. Brickset is "the resource" when it comes to Lego.

Very often I am browsing through my sets, checking inventories and watching/reading reviews.

Ultimate and irreplacable tool for every AFOL!

Happy birthday, thanks a lot for all your work!

Well done Huw :-) All the memories come flooding back: UK LEGOfest 2 at mine in 1999 in Chatham, then another when I was in Orpington in 2002; getting discount at the original LEGO store in Bluewater because so many of us suddenly appeared en masse; booking out the entire Red Letter Days event at Windsor and getting 30% discount across the park; Tony starting Brickish; Duncan before Bright Bricks; Ian coming down from Scotland; Mike coming over from the States... And all the other names I've long since forgotten! Wishing you the very best :-) Jon.

Well according to the site I joined in October of 2017, a few weeks after my son’s 4th birthday. That would make sense as that is when I got him his first Lego (not Duplo) sets. I thought it was cool how I could inventory my Lego collection from my childhood, and add his to it.

Of course that is how it all started, then I realized how truly amazing this site is, and my bank account has never been the same since. I’m pretty sure if I got a lawyer I could probably sue you for selling an addictive drug without any disclaimers. But don’t worry, I won’t, I’ll just keep on fueling my addiction.

Congrats on 20!

By in United States,

Looks like I discovered Brickset just after my son turned 3 in 2018 as I exited a long, dark age building and researching Duplo sets with him.

Brickset has been an amazing resource, especially as he's starting to leave Duplo behind to move on to smaller bricks and ever more complex and creative building.

Huwbot's set of the day is a daily must-check for me. Can't imagine a world without CapnRex's reviews. And I've really enjoyed the recent featured set articles and of course Huw's various deep-dives into the details and data, like the analysis of set release dates by region. Why speculate when there's data to answer that question and Huw's got it. I've particularly enjoyed the organization articles as they reassure me that our small but growing collection is in fact tiny and manageable! Great content that's unique, the site is accessible and intuitive, and the database.

Happy 20th! Looking forward to seeing how Brickset grows and develops over the next 10 years!

I think this is my first ever post to Brickset, and what better time, right?!

But I really can’t say it better than it’s already been said before me. Best LEGO site, hands down, and I tell anyone who needs to know. The positivity alone is probably the reason I visit almost daily. (And to check my rank - like it matters. It, umm, matters, right?)
I obsessively love LEGO, my daughters love LEGO, their mom tolerates our collection (and my obsession), so really, what’s not to love? Brickset just makes the lovin’ better.
Thanks for that. Thanks for everything.

Happy Birthday. I don't know when I discovered the site, but I am a daily user. What a great database and being able to keep track of your inventory is wonderful. Keep it up, and keep those reviews coming.
