Site changes

Posted by ,

As you may know, in addition to the 'own' and 'want' checkboxes, you can also use additional checkboxes to help organise your collection, which are set up here and colour changed here.

By popular demand, I have increased the number available from 4 to 8, which I hope will be enough for everyone, and I plan to add them to minifigs in the coming weeks.

I've also resurrected the change log, which will list all changes made from now on.

As always, if you have any comments or suggestions about how the site works, get in touch!

We asked and you listened! This is a great change; thank you, Huw.

Edit: Erk! Our 'LEGO Interests' are gone! I quite enjoyed reading about people's LEGO-lives.

By in Australia,

Can I request that an all-encompassing tag be added for parts which are part of either a creature or a minifig or anything of that nature? Its kinda annoying having to individually filter out all the "creature", "creature component", etc, tags when browsing through colours, especially since there's a limit on how many tags you can exclude and that limit isnt high enough to filter out all of the creature/figure parts.

Unfortunately we have been having a bit of a problem with spammers who join simply to post spammy links or other off-topic, sometimes totally inappropriate, messages there, so I decided to remove it completely for now. I'll keep the text in the database so it can be resurrected later if conditions permit.

Maybe link it to some activity so you cannot edit it unless you showed some useful activity on the site

Thank you, Huw! I only became aware of the "notes" after it was mentioned in your last update post. They have been very helpful in tracking the sets my sister and I have been buying for my nephew's kids. Last weekend during the Christmas in July GWP my sister was texting me from the Lego store in Calgary to help her pick out sets for them while I scrolled through their collection on Brickset here in Atlantic Canada. ( I was buying for them online, too.) It was actually a lot of fun!

That's not a bad idea. Maybe I could make it so it's not editable until you've been a member for a month or something.

Good plan. And perhaps disable links & email addresses, along with using inappropriate-language filters.

It's a shame the spammers have brought this about; the LEGO Interests section really helped added some humanity to people's usernames.

The LEGO interests section is back, but can only be edited once you've been a member for a week.

HTML is stripped out, as it always has been.

Aaaah! AAAAHH! :D

Thanks ever so much, Huw, that's gonna be really useful for me :D I sort of... have been keeping track of several different minifigure categories in my head, so it'll be great to be able to use this system to organise them into such groups more effectively. Really appreciate this addition!

Haha this is brilliant, using the flags as binary bits! Using this method, now you can have 256 different flags instead of 8!

seeing al those coloured boxes.. are you planning of adding a "Parts collection Analysis"?
I would love to see how many red bricks I have, or what percentage of my bricks are yellow :D

I guess there might be some scope to do something like that! I'll give it some thought.

Yes, users who joined the site, logged in once within 24 hours of doing so, then didn't log in again.

That tends to be the way spammers operate, of course.

I may start archiving collections that haven't been touched for 5 years soon, too, because the collections table now contains 31 million records. Its size doesn't seem to have much of an impact on performance, due to the number of indexes in use, but it certainly bloats the database and increases the time it takes to back up etc.

If you click on the 'xx comments' link at the end of the article on the home page it will take you to the one after the last one you read, so no need to scroll, or for paging.

By in Denmark,

Sorry, maybe it is just me, but I can not get the “Minifigs missing” funktion to work. It is checked on the site, but nothing appears on the minifigures.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm probably being daft, but I can't find anymore in the settings the option to remove themes we don't care about (e.g. Duplo and Star Wars in my case) from searches and listings.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a great addition, along with the more accessible notes being recently added. I have been using a Google Sheet to keep track of all of my son's sets, duplicating the info here, but with a notes field so I could keep track of who got him each set and when (e.g. "5th birthday present from Uncle Mike"). The notes field now being more present (I did not know they were there previously), and these check boxes should go a long way in helping eliminate the need for an external list.

My only comment, is that I can't seem to sort on the new checkboxes, as then I could create 2 sub lists for my sets and my son's sets, w/o the need for two separate accounts or a mixed bag of owned sets. But that's a "me" problem and a nice to have. :D

Love the changes and the site, Huw. Thanks for your continued passion and involvement in the community!

I've implemented this. I've given minifig/creature parts an additional flag 'MCP' so you can view them all here https://brickset.com/parts/tag-MCP and more importantly view all parts that are not minifig/creature parts https://brickset.com/parts/tag-!MCP.

It's perhaps a bit cryptic but I didn't want another long tag name, they need shortening as it it.

They are not removed immediately but the next time you use the site, or add a set to your collection the flag should be taken into account and minifigs in the sets so marked will not appear in your minifig collection.

I removed it because it was the cause of an endless stream of support calls: people were checking the themes they *are* interested in then wondering why they didn't appear in the listings.

You can't sort on them but you can filter: there will be options in the 'Collection' drop down that enable you to view flagged sets and there are links on the My Sets page.

OK, good! It can take a while to take effect, simply to avoid straining the database on every mouse click.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Is there any chance of enabling emoji in these comments? Or would that bloat the database too much... or open doors for weird ASCII quirks (and emoji abuse) that you don't want to deal with?

I like the way emoji helps me convey tone, but I can understand if you don't want them in here. Just curious, though.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Just a few days ago I thought "would be nice to have more categories available". Now I can't remember for which purpose I've wanted to use them...
What a luxury.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

*Please* no emojis! Maybe it's just me but I consider them incredibly trashy, if nothing else from an esthetic/typographic point as full-color emojis sticks out like sore thumbs among otherwise all-black text (personally I think the Unicode project jumped the shark when they started focusing on these). If you need to convey tone you still have the perfectly usable :-) , :-( etc, I prefer to be able to use these without them being converted to garish color icons.

BTW, is there a reason you've closed the Osprey comments *again*? I could've understood temporarily closing them if you had no-one to watch over the discussion at night, but got disappointed they weren't opened again today. The only remotely bad I could see was two or three users having a needlessly lengthy discussion about the appropriateness of a rumored Colosseum set, and the main reason it became so lengthy was 'cause everyone insisted on quoting all previous posts in their entirety. Maybe you should add a "trim your quotes" note to the "read the entire thread before posting" part?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I noted that the number of 'votes' for my reviews has (very) recently decreased. Would that be due to the removed accounts?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@axeleng, don't worry, I hate emojis, too.

@chefkaspa, quite possibly. I did also delete orphaned content belonging to deleted user accounts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I use those boxes for my kids' sets, too, so good to know I can filter by them--thanks!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ra226 - I found the trick, based on Huw's feedback was that you can filter when you click on Browse -> Sets from the site's header. Under the "My Collection" dropdown, you can filter on the tags (e.g. "Jack's Sets" or "Jill's Sets").

So my process now is "Owned" checkbox for my own sets, and then these tags (and not "Owned") for my kid's sets. So far, it's working great!

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

why is no one talking about the leaked Star Wars Bespin set?

Because we don't discuss leaks here. This is a reputable site.

By in Turkey,

Hi Huw,

Before I buy a set, I check its inventory to see how many new/interesting parts I get. I am currently reordering the inventory table on number of pieces owned, get a piece of paper, note the ones I don't have/want, and make a decision about buying the set or bricklinking parts.

I would love to have a checkbox in every line, so I can select the pieces and have a dynamically generated total line at the end (No need for it to be saved on the DB). Would you be interested in such a feature?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@axeleng said:

Another option is to insert code in the site that automatically removes the rest of the quote tree besides for the most recent part of it. A different site I frequent does this, and it works well.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Wonderful, this is great, thanks Huw. I've used this feature extensively, keeping track of the exact state of all my sets and always wished we could have more than then 4 customizable check boxes. Let the new enhanced set organising begin!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It seems that the extra categories no longer show on the pages for buying - ex: https://brickset.com/buy/country-ca/vendor-Amazon/mycollection-Flag4 . It is showing the sets I have added Flag 4 to, but it only shows columns for 'own' and 'want' on the right. It used to show cols for all the flags, which is helpful as a visual aid especially when I use multiple flags for a specific meaning.

I get that it might be too 'cluttered' for some people with all 8 flags, but I would like to see them - perhaps that's something that could be turned on/off in a drop down or user profile or something?

EDIT: Also, is it possible to add an option to the filter for 'My Collection' where there is no category picked? I can then easily find sets that I haven't categorized yet. Right now I have to bring up everything from 2020 and go through the whole list to notice ones I haven't already categorized

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks, Huw,
Often, I don't initially understand what the tweaks to the site are or why people might want them but after I figured out what the extra categories were and how they could be used, I had to ask, "What took you so long?!" Seriously, though, these are a really nice addition. These will help me identify which sets I'm ready and willing to sell. And will help give me something to show the spouse that will prove I'm at least making an effort!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good morning everyone, and what a new dawn..... sounds mad but I can now sort by wanted again (and therefore bargains) without my cluttered double flag means "to do next" sub sets. Bliss. Thanks again Huw.

I removed them simply because there was no room to display potentially 8 of them.

The ad spam if you're not logged in is simply horrendous. Every time I go to the page and I'm not logged in, I'm bombarded with at least three embedded pop-up windows I have to close out before the site is able to be decently read. And when I go to a new page, I have to repeat the process.

That much ad spam is going to turn off people new to the site.

Gravatar

Save a cookie and log in once, the ads on the site allow Huw to make this his full-time focus.
I also think that logging in to remove the ads is a good incentive to help combat the spammers Huw mentioned, that little extra effort probably does a lot to keep the trolls at bay.

Would it help to have a the portion of the link non-editable? For example: youtube.com/[channel link here] or twitter.com/[profile name here]

This way the only part that could be modified would be the name, not the entire link.
