Site enhancements

Posted by ,

I've made a few tweaks to the site today:

Set inventory pages, such as this one, now have links at the top to enable you to view unique and rare parts in the set more easily. Rare is defined as being found in 3 or fewer sets.

There's a new section on the home page sidebar: 'Sets you want at Amazon'. If you're logged in, are in US/CA/UK/FR/DE/ES or IT, and your local Amazon has sets on your wanted list available at a discount, they'll be listed there. This will enable you to monitor their prices more easily.

The sidebar on news article pages used to repeat the Twitter feed that's on the home page, which I felt wasn't the best use of space. I've replaced it with lists of recent news articles from the same category as the article you're viewing and, on another tab, all of them.

You can keep abreast of all site changes in the change log.

As always, your feedback is appreciated, particularly on the Amazon list.

When I click the "wanted list" link in the new Amazon section, I sort of expected it to take me here:
https://brickset.com/buy/country-uk/vendor-amazon/mycollection-Wanted
(cf. my whole list of wanted sets.)

That makes more sense to me, as it's more Amazon-centric. What do you think?

As ever, Huw, thanks for the continuous improvement!

EDIT: forgot to add that I really like the new Amazon section concept though.

By in Italy,

About the definition of rare parts, I think that the size of the sets where it appears is a parameter to take into account: large sets are produced in small numbers and often the value of a a part heavily depends on that, because it is more difficult for a LEGO fan to buy large sets, so that often he/she is prone to buy a specific part at high price instead then buy the whole set.
Ok, here we are speaking about rarity and not about value, but the two things are often closely related.

@bananaworld, good idea, I'll change that with the next update.

By in United Kingdom,

Perhaps the Amazon list could include discounts from other sites? Brickset tracks discounts from Iwoot and Bricklink; since I try and avoid Amazon where possible seeing discounts from these sites would be very useful.

Incidentally, why did Brickset stop tracking Smyths discounts?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Good idea. That might be possible.

Smyths Toys stopped its affiliate programme a few years ago so we can't get data automatically, or earn a commission from links to it.

The inventory change is very useful!

Is it possible to list/filter parts in an inventory/parts section not in your collection or low in your collection (say <5)? Between unique/rare and the above it would be useful for finding essential pieces you need before getting the bulk of a set you want to make from parts.

Keep up the great work on this site!

By in Finland,

I have an addition i would personally like to see, however i feel i'm in the minority of people who would use it. An option to just add X number of undefined parts to your collection. I use my brickset collection only really to know approximately how many parts i own, not to know which specific sets. So whenever i buy loose parts from bricklink or whereever, i don't want to go through and add each part individually, i just want to have a button to add, say 324 parts into my collection since that's how big the order was. Currently i have been very backhandedly adding multiples of set 6117 to mark my loose part purchases. (along with other stuff like adding another 75055 because i bought a lot consisting of *most* parts of that set along with extra stuff)

Nice to see those Amazon discounts for the wanted sets right away. Thanks!

Almost relatedly, Huw, have you any plans for the next engagement-increasing series of articles?

I very much enjoyed Storage Solutions and would love to see a come-back. The Set of the Millennium was good fun too (if a little divisive...)

This is great Huw, thank you so much.

I spend endless time searching, and working out discounts and this has just made it completely simple!

The want list at Amazon feature is brilliant. Thanks for adding it. The others are also good too.

@Huw
Thank you for adding these features and making Brickset better and better with each update!

I spent some time analyzing the parts in the Bowser's Castle set you linked to in the article for the new features. I LOVE this new feature and ability to see unique and rare elements in each set. I would get this info by doing a few clicks through elements that I thought were new or rare while looking at set inventories. Now this work is already done for me! Thank you!

By in France,

The section 'Sets you want at Amazon' is really great. But it's not very "visible". I had to go through your article to learn about it. Maybe it's me...
Anyway, that's great enhancement: I just saw a set I was looking for, so I will buy it by clicking on the link.
Thank you,

This might be my favorite round of upgrades to Brickset yet! Thank you so much, Huw, for going above and beyond to provide the best Lego fan experience for all of us. I will use all of the changes!

Huw - any idea why the eBay tab on a set page now displays in a single line horizontally across the screen exceeding the screen width several times? Used to work fine and display in two columns.

Unfortunately to become a Amazon.nl affiliate you need to reside in the country and/or have a NL bank account so we can't do so at the moment.

eBay has withdrawn the means by which we were generating the list so we've had to resort to another method to show eBay items.

It would be interesting to try and come up with a formula that takes into account the number of sets a part appears in, the quantity in the set and the number of parts in the set it comes in, then assigns parts a value between 0 and 1: a rarity score.

If anyone has any ideas about this, because it would be a useful feature, let me know!

By in Italy,

Thanks, Huw! The amazon part is great (and would be greater if Amazon.it had better offers).

Thanks for putting the number of helpful scores column back on the "Your reviews" page, Huw.

The 'Sets you want at Amazon' addition is brilliant. I didn't know I needed it but I do. Now I need to update my needed list. Thank you for all of the updates and your work!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I just wanted to say I really like the Amazon discount list, I check my Amazon wanted list every day when I come here so it's nice to have it displayed without having to navigate through menus.

And may I add that a big percentage of would-be discounts on the list are simply not real - at least here in Italy. When you click on that 50% bargain, it often winds up being a 6% discount. But I'm sure it is a glitch from Amazon and not Brickset's.

BTW, thanks Huw for improving the site with better and better features.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the new Amazon feature! I check Brickset (daily) to see the latest Amazon discounts, but I'm interested in all their discounts - not just those on my wanted list.

My wish: that there was a way to remove Amazon Marketplace discounts - I have found that these offers usually don't come with free shipping, which is what makes Amazon deals particularly appealing for Prime members (like me) - so these just get in the way when scanning down the list. Any convenient way to exclude those?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Will have to check this out in detail tomorrow.
Both new features sound intriguing and very useful. Thanks @Huw.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Thanks as always for the new features!

This is more out of curiosity, but is there a way of seeing a list of the sets with the most “rare” or unique parts? Of course this might bias towards new sets with new parts, but it would change over time too as those parts become less rare. Just curious. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'll change the discount to 10% rather than 1% so avoid negligible discounts being listed and also show only items that are free shipping for Prime members (since we can't currently determine free shipping otherwise)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thanks Huw! This feature will help a lot :)

Huw, how about articles regarding “most challenging build”? Some might be due to sheer number of parts, some might be due to unclear instructions, whatever. I think you mentioned something like this in an article a while ago, citing 8480 as a Top 10 candidate. (I’d agree with that— it was probably the most frustrating experience I’ve had.) I’d be interested in hearing from the community.

I’d like to see Australia added into the “sets you want at Amazon”

That will certainly be a great timesaver. Thanks Huw

By in Germany,

@Huw The Amazon list is a great new feature and a very welcome addition. Thanks!

Only downside is that it does not always show the actual pricing. About half of the links have already resumed a higher price on Amazon. How often does the system update the price? And when would be the best time to check for new offers?

As an additional feature a price curve over time would be neat. This could be shown on the individual set pages. Let's say: Home/BrowseSets/CitySpace60226-1: Mars Research Shuttle
A graph on the right hand side could show the price development over time for my regional Amazon link (as here: https://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/OffersOfProduct/6624826_-city-mars-forschungsshuttle-60226-lego.html).

By in Luxembourg,

@Huw Any chance that for people residing in other countries, you show this Amazon sidebar for their nearest Amazon store, similar to how you did it on the forum? E.g. show Amazon DE for LU residents. (Usually better Lego deals than Amazon FR, but not always.)

Prices are imported every 4 hours during the day and in the case of Germany it's at about 9am, 1pm, 5pm and 9pm.

"As an additional feature a price curve over time would be neat. "

We used to track prices over time and show a graph exactly as you describe but Amazon objected, to the point of kicking us off the associates programme. We had to fight hard to get back in. I guess sites like that you link to have some agreement and/or pay for the right to display historical data.

Good idea, although a solution is to change your preferred country by clicking on the flag at the top right of the page to Germany. Then you'll see Amazon.de and other German-specific links, prices and data.

Thanks @Huw, I had completely forgotten about the ability to change preferred countries! Also makes it easy to switch between DE and FR.

I don't order from Amazon, so I don't care about those changes, but I love the unique and rare parts lists.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Is there a way of printing a list of parts owned that also prints the picture of the brick? I know I can print one page at a time (200) brick types. But I have 42 pages on the website where each is 200 brick types. I’d love to be able to press print once and get my entire parts list printed.
