Han Solo Carbonite Metal Key Chain

©2020 LEGO Group

The November store calendar for the USA has just been published showing the offers available at the start of the month.

From 1st November to the 8th, VIPs will receive 5006363 Han Solo Carbonite Metal Keychain as the gift with purchase with Star Wars orders over $100. 30464 El Fuego's Stunt Cannon will still be free on the 1st so that will be a good day to make a purchase.

It's not known yet if the offer will be available in UK/Europe as well: hopefully we'll find out this week.

Details of the offers available over Black Friday weekend are not disclosed on the calendar, unfortunately.

Can the SW promos get any worse? WOW

I actually like the GWP, but $100 of a specific theme seems a bit steep for a keychain that would retail for $5.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmmm, not much there. Where is the lovely GWP ideas car? Glad to see brickset finally flagging up the instore calendar.

Gravatar
By in Slovakia,

In my opinion one of the worst SW promo yet. Also in general compared to upcoming Christmas Carol promotion which looks wonderful this looks even worse. Lego should keep making promos from bricks or exclusive figures.

By in United Kingdom,

@Huw Perhaps more intriguing is what looks like a four stud wide Star Wars Dots bracelet next to the keyring.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Suspension of your normal reality is required for what I'm about to say:

In an infinite multi-verse where every possibility is an inevitability, all Star Wars stories are 100 percent true, historical events. Now, re-read that and make sure it's sunk in.

With that in mind, can you imagine how grossly offensive it is to commemorate the capture and enslavement of this hero of the people... with a key-ring! :D

Only Star Wars orders and the AT-AT is still out of stock? So much for that

LEGO DOTS Star Wars sounds like something I would buy day one

Gravatar

I like the keyring a lot but $100 is too much at this time of year. I've already got almost all the Star Wars stuff I wanted.

That Solo guy? I heard he cheated Lando Calrissian out of the Falcon. Made a Wookie war hero keep flying and fixing that thing for decades. Never pays back what he owes. Tried to rip the Hutts off over some spice he *claims* he dumped to avoid an Imperial inspection. Once got so blind he smacked Boba Fett into the Sarlacc with a stick (that one's pretty funny though). All of that I could forgive. But he smooched a girl when she said no.
I say, key ring the guy.

It's good that I haven't bought the Razor Crest yet so I might get this keychain this month during Black Friday.

It says its metal, it's not a standard one made from a minifig. I rather like it!

Keychain only available until the 8th...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ComfySofa:
So you’re saying it should be a keychain of Jar-Jar in carbonite?

@HangedSanchez:
Huh. So it does. That threshold makes a lot more sense now. And I definitely need to own this. Maybe make a little alcove in my condo, with some mood lighting, with a curtain that can be swept to the side to dramatically reveal that I’ve secretly been watching if anyone tries to steal it...

By in Puerto Rico,

I feel like it's about time they update the hair on that piece.

Gravatar
By in United States,

nothing on the calendar about VIP weekend like in past years during the weekend before Thanksgiving. I'm guessing it will be announced when the time gets closer. Similar to the way they did double VIP points in October and didn't add that to the calendar. Not even any info about the Christmas Carol gift with purchase on the calendar either. Hoping for double VIP the weekend before Thanksgiving like in past years.

yep, plus since i spent that much so soon, can't justify blowing another $100 just for a keyring. 'Crest gotta wait longer for me, sorry Lego

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Ladondorf:
It’s a lot easier to update the hair on a minifig. Hair can be generic, where any theme can make use of it going toward, or it may just be a matter of taking advantage of another theme’s hairstyle (like how Joker ditched the vampire hair after Dollar Bill added green CMF S2 Judoku hair to the production lineup). Changing this mold is of limited use to the line theme that’s allowed to use it at all. If it wears out, or someone _REALLY_ wants it so bad that they can convince their bosses to green light a new mold, you might see an updated design. Otherwise, you’ll just have to settle for it being a vast improvement over the 1x2x5 slab

By in United States,

This is my favorite Lego promo in a looong time, though I understand it's not for everyone.

I've used Lego keychains for the past 10+ years (Original Boba Fett, then Chewbacca, and now BB-8), but the printing wears off over time & heavy use, and my BB-8 is now a plain white droid.

As soon as I saw that this was a metal keychain using the same (or similar) mood for Han-in-Carbonite, I began planning what Star Wars set or sets I'd be buying on November 1st to get this keychain. (I settled on the $130 Darth Vader's Castle, which I fear will retire soon.)

Gravatar

Do we think the cantina will be back in stock for this promo?

By in United States,

Very cool keychain, but $100 threshold?! No way. That should easily be the $35 mark.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Totally underwhelmed. A key chain? The most boring product available. Who uses keys anymore anyway? What do I need a key chain for?
Plus 100 Dollar threshold? Riiiight.

Let's hope at least the Black Friday deals will be worth it. Otherwise there's not much to look forward to in terms of LEGO for the rest of the year.

I don't believe that you need $100 of Star Wars to get the keychain, every theme-related requirement for GWPs in the past can totally be met by other themes as long as you've got at least one thing in the required theme. So if your order had $97 worth of Dots and a $3 Star Wars keychain, you'd get the promo. And I don't believe that a metal keychain like this would retail for $5

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly really like this, and would gladly add it to my keychain, but there just isn't $100 worth of star wars this year that I feel that I need to buy.

Gravatar

It does look like that, but it is just a graphic they created. They did the same thing in their new Holiday catalogs

Gravatar
By in Australia,

You still can’t put Han’s new hairpiece on the Carbonite mould. Lazy!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The $100 threshold still feels high even though the keychain is metal. I would have pulled the trigger on this if it was like $50 or maybe even $75, but with most of the higher priced new sets being out of stock anyway I’ll pass.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

This seems like a good promotion to run, given it's sandwiched between two major ones - Double VIP Points and Black Friday - and is at the midpoint between the previous and next retail waves.

It's definitely not a must-have, and given all the whinging involved when LEGO does make must-haves limited exclusives, I see this as a positive.

@AustinPowers :
What's your address again, and can you give an indication as to the total volume of your collection please? Would it fit in, say...an unmarked rental van with stolen plates?

Seriously, though, car keys, door keys to my condo, and keys to the locking travel cases that I use to pack up many of my MOCs (besides making it at least a little difficult for crimes of convenience, the latches on these cases are particularly prone to popping open with a slight bump if you _don't_ lock them). I've got them on a keychain that I picked up in San Diego about 30 years ago. I've got coworkers who carry a wad of personal keys so large that they could be used to fend off a mugger in a pinch. Or if the hoarding comes back, maybe to drive off anyone who tries to swipe that pack of toilet paper that you're trying to buy.

@STL_Brick_Co:
There are 2x2 tiles in the print, while DOTS has only ever used 1x1 parts to decorate the bands with due to how much they have to be able to flex.

@Yo_dA:
That's going to depend on two things, which are the type of metal it's made of (it has to be something that won't rust or corrode), and whether it's formed exactly like the plastic part or if it's a solid brick like the carbonite slab was in the movie.

By in United States,

I'd be more excited for this if I literally did not just spend $100 on Star Wars stuff for Double Points, the Mini Robots, and the in-store exclusive. I definitely got a better deal with that than just a keychain, but that's a pretty rad METAL keychain, something that will definitely be more sustainable from the wear and tear standard LEGO keychains endure.

I also think that $100 is a bit too much, however, we are talking about metal, and depending on what they did with the underside, it could be a pretty hefty chunk.

Maybe I can get an employee friend to take pity on me.

On par with the Ford Mustang/Lego themed metal keychain from this past Spring. I love that keychain! Gonna love this one, too. Now I'm really excited about working 20 hours of overtime the past two weeks... cuz I know I'll be buying some Star Wars Lego on November 1st! Guess Sesame Street will have to wait.

I’m confused about this whole multi-verse thing. Didn’t Star Wars happen a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?

I’m homeschooling my kids this year and for history we’ve been watching Star Wars movies. For science we are learning about biology of alien species. Our unit on midichlorians alone lasted three weeks. And of course for theology we have been studying the ancient Jedi religion. Are you somehow implying that there is a chance that what I’m teaching my children isn’t true, I mean besides having to round down when you say the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs?

We know the "one per customer" isn't true. And "$100 and up" can mean $99.99 and up sometimes. Their stipulations can't be taken at face value. You have to actually try it and see.

By in United States,

I'm wary that it's actually metal. In February, the "metal" brick keychain was released, but it turned out to actually just be a plastic brick painted to look metallic. Lego had to go back and change the description of the item from using "metal" to "metallic" after a few upset reviews. Is there a way to confirm that the Han Solo in Carbonite is actually made of metal?

@Nytmare:
The “one per customer” rule may well be in effect for LEGO.com orders. Remember, they’re strictly imposing the customer limits on all purchasable items online, and will cancel your entire order if you add on a baseplate if you’ve already maxed out your limit on previous orders. It’s not really something you can control directly (unless you can delete a GWP from your cart?), but I could see them flagging any highly desirable GWP you’ve already qualified for so it will only add to your cart once.

Funny. On the other fansite (not brick related) I frequent it was the Americans who tried to tell me why no one needs keys anymore. And now that I finally begin to understand what they mean it is an American who tries to tell me how important keys still are.

Just for the record, I still have one or two keys. Not for my car though.
;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh, if you _want_ to divest yourself of keys, it's definitely possible. There are electronic door locks for homes, you can use a phone app to unlock and turn on a (new) car, you can skip cars altogether and just walk/bike/bus/etc., and you can avoid buying any personal possessions that come with a keyed lock. You can also live entirely off of food you grow yourself...if you really want to.

But there are a lot of things you can't do without keys. Any 100% original, classic car will come with at least one key, depending on the brand (some use one key for ignition and another key for doors/trunk/glovebox, and some cars come with a valet key that only works on the driver's door and ignition). A lot of antiques have keyed locks. Many jobs require you to use keys.

When anyone tries to explain all of US culture as if it's a uniformly cohesive thing, the only truth you can glean from that is that they have no idea what's going on in the rest of the country. We have Amish and Mennonites, who both live pretty much as their ancestors did in the 19th century (horse and buggy for transport, and usually no electric power at all). And we have Silicon Valley, which is pushing for the Internet of Things, and a day when everything can be controlled from your phone. We have people who wear tinfoil hats to shield themselves from "mind control satellites". We have people who move to the most remote parts of the country to get away from...everything. On the criminal side, we have people who specialize in low-tech solutions like hammering a spike into a door lock, or even just breaking a window. We also have high-tech criminals who can hack a lot of these "keyless entry" systems because nobody ever bothered to incorporate even a hint of security (not even the equivalent of a "Keep Out" sign).

But I can't remember how long ago it was that I first heard how we were going to have a paperless society. I get a fresh pile of paper every day right now, pimping various politicians who want to get (re)elected, so clearly that isn't happening any day soon. The same pretty much holds true for keys.
