Unique LEGO space calendar available on Etsy

Posted by ,

Brickset member celloguy, aka TheBrickArtisan elsewhere, has been in touch to tell us about a stunning 2021 calendar he's produced and is selling on Etsy:

"This calendar is the culmination of the last three years of Lego Space creations which I've built and photographed. In my working life, I am an opera director and musician, or at least I was before lockdown in the UK.

"This year all my creative work has been cancelled, so Lego has been an important creative outlet. I came out of my dark ages a while ago after seeing The Lego Movie on TV, which really captured the magical feeling that playing with Lego had had for me as a kid, and made me want to put some pieces together again.

"Though I'm a fan of Castle, Pirates, and classic Town too, I particularly love building in the neo-classic space style. I was born in the late 80s, so Classic Space was actually just before my time (my era was M:tron to UFO), but there's just something about those early sets, their creativity, ingenuity, and charm, which created the mould of so much of what was to come.

"I love adding to that classic Lego universe, and include a bit of story on each page of the calendar, so that it adds to the narrative and world building element of the designs. That's the director in me I guess, and I'm very obviously following in the path that Peter Reid, Tim Goddard and so many other brilliant neo-classic Space builders have forged.

"There are also a few M:Tron builds in the calendar, as that's another of my favourite themes, including the Bubble Scout that is a Lego Ideas Project of mine, and I just couldn't resist more M:Tron for the December spread, as the red and neon green colour scheme just seemed right for the festive season! I've also included some smaller comic pictures, such as the Bunny Space Evolution which I hope people will enjoy.

"I really like integrating unusual parts into my spaceship designs and love discovering new parts from Lego's vast back catalogue of elements that they have produced. Rare part recolours that never made it into sets are another thing I like to include. The joy of actually putting parts together in the hand, making accidental connections and working through aesthetic and design problems in 3D space, means I never build digitally. It's great to have a break from screens and digital life!

"I'm really excited to share this project and hope that people will enjoy it and be inspired by it throughout the year.

"You can find more of my work on instagram @The_Brick_Artisan and on Flickr (The Brick Artisan)"

It's a superb piece of work and a true labour of love. If you'd like to get hold of one you can buy it on Etsy, where you'll also find a video of flicking through all the pages.

Wonderful. I would have bought it, but just got my WWF calendar .... Nice to see people doing great artistic things during lockdown periods.

Absolutely delighted to support this initiative! As a fellow musician (French horn) and childhood fan of Classic Space, this is a must for me!

By in Netherlands,

Awesome builds! I have no use for a calendar, but I will definately support the Ideas project. Those little spaceships would make a great Ideas set!

By in Sweden,

Unfortunately I recently lost my job and I'm still a teen (19) so my savings are limited, while I still have monthly payments for car, meds and subscriptions
But items and ideas like this is what makes want to buy it, I don't really use calendars but the work and effort put into this is something I want to support, I'm really tempted to order one but we'll see

It reminds me of that book Lego Space: Building the Future, which attempted to put Lego's space themes into a wider context. Were they made by the same person?

The LEGO Space book was put together by the other two builders mentioned in the article, Peter Reid and Tim Goddard. All three are worth following for their additions to classic space.

I'd buy these sets in a heartbeat, especially that Galaxy Explorer update! Just ordered a signed copy and can't wait to hang it up at work. Hoping it makes it across the pond before the New Year :)

Man the submarine picture is gorgeous. I've always loved underwater things, and underwater scifi is a criminally underdeveloped concept. LEGO Subnautica when!?

For some reason Fin's bunny hat looks more like cat ears in that evolution picture. Don't know why.
