Build a Bonsai competition reminder

Posted by ,

Our Build a Bonsai competition is in full-swing and as you will see on Flickr, Instagram and blockheads.builders, there have been some awesome entries already, including this one by afol_minifigures_78 which utilises a Rock Raiders monster for the trunk!

I'm delighted to announce that Nick Vas, designer of 10281 Bonsai Tree, has offered to help judge, which is just as well given the high standard of the entries so far.

Find out how to enter here. I've extended the deadline to 14th February to allow for the supply chain delays that are plaguing those of us in the UK and Europe at the moment.

You may also like to enter a related competition that The Rambling Brick is running at the moment: Create a LEGO vase to win the botanical collection.

Good luck!

There's a Pokemon called "Sudowoodo", which is a rock that disguises itself as a tree.

Seems like Rocky the Rock Monster has the same idea.

I've only known Rock Monster tree for five minutes, but if anything happened to them I'd disassemble every fig in this room and then myself.

What exactly did you mean by “life-sized” in the rules?

Roughly the size of a real Bonsai tree and not tiny microscale.

Then why on flickr is someone's entry a microscale tree?

At a guess, because they didn't read the rules...

By in Netherlands,

I'm going to be disappointed if no one enters a money bonsai tree. The green from the 1x2 money tiles is perfect for this.

By in Canada,

Still waiting for my Bonsai Tree to arrive (ordered on January 1st). The order now shows "shipped", hopefully I'll receive it some time this week. Some great entries already out there :)

By in United States,

Rules aside, the Flickr microscale bonsai with the Joker hair is actually pretty cool, and technically would be lifesize...for a minifig. Besides that, I tend towards the weird, so my other favorites at this point, out of what I can see (it appears you have to log in to Instagram to see everything posted there) are the gingerbread tree on Flickr, and the rock monster and tree costume trees on Instagram.

The set is still out of stock in the US :(
Really hope it’s back soon!

Why should I enter? I never win.

"Interesting ideas. Maybe I will try to enter, but I never seem to win anything I enter so I would just enter it for fun...

P.s. A lego horse in tan with unique bridle print will be released this febuary. I found this out by watching a youtube video."

I agree.

No bricks needed: digital entries are welcome.

Because it's fun? That is why I enter in these competitions in any case, even though I also never win. And I'm hoping that if I enter enough of these I will one day develop the skill to actually win!

You’ll never win, if you never try! Just give it your best!

@aztecwarrior

Building a lifesize bonsai tree will not require 500 billion pieces. If you like, you can use a digital designer, and have access to all pieces in all colors. Plus, you can use the official model as a base!"

That wasn't supposed to be literal. But the best ideas are made by the people with the pieces to build them, and those people don't need to win because they already have tones of Legos!!!

Grab Studio or log into Mecabricks and the sky's the limit! That's what I'm doing. I've made four different designs already and don't have the set (or parts to make it) at all!

Doesn't look like even 2/14 is going to be enough time, availability-wise.

i'm not sure i could create anything better than trunk monster there ... I guess i could try a vase instead

By in United States,

I built my copy of 10281 last night while watching a certain bonsai-related trilogy, and worked on modifying the design while watching the first season of the follow-up series. I've got to collect something that went home with another LUG member before it's complete, but I managed to figure it out without having to purchase any additional parts.

After taking some photos, I decided to tweak the design. I added volume to the branches...and it's still pretty packed, so I took another shot showing what it looks like after being trimmed.

Like most sets, this needed two things to be better: purple, and Batman. It's posted to Blockheads now.

Umm, i don't have an account on any of the suggested websites, do they cost any money to have?
I'm leaning towards Blockheads.

Can it be viewed on Mecabricks instead?
