Vote for a set to celebrate LEGO's 90th Anniversary
Posted by Huw,
To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the LEGO company, the Ideas team wants us to choose a classic theme to be reimagined as a single new product to be released in 2022! Thirty popular LEGO themes have been selected for us to choose from.
Here's how the process will work:
“Splitting this fan vote into two parts, you will have three votes in the first vote. You can vote a maximum of once for each theme in the first vote. This vote will be 100% transparent!
“The second vote will be the top three themes from the first vote. One of the three themes will be the theme the 90th Anniversary Set will be based on. This vote will not be transparent.
“We will run this fan vote of all 30 themes from today to the 25th January 2021. Then on February 3rd, we will launch the second fan vote. One of these themes will be what the 90th Anniversary Set will be based on, but we still want to know what the most popular of the final three is!”
So, the second vote won't actually be used to determine the set. It appears that will be ignored and is just for information.
View which thirty classic themes LEGO has chosen after the break...

Evidently LEGO could not handle the inevitable victories of Clikits, Galidor or Znap so omitted them from the poll options.
I think we all know the likely suspects to win. Yawn...
Interesting that themes as recent as BIONICLE, Alpha Team and Studios — all from 2001, a mere 20 years ago — are included. The very same themes I grew up with, along with Adventurers, Rock Raiders and Arctic. Meanwhile Knights' Kingdom is omitted, presumably because it doesn't really fall under Classic Castle?
ohhh, wolfpack Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man, do we have to choose one? I want almost all of these.
As interesting as some of the other themes are, they don't stand a chance against Classic Space.
Personally I'd like Adventurers to win.
SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE! SPACE!
Bonkle gang, now is our time. We didn't get the ideas set (perhaps this had something to do with it), but we have the chance now to claim victory. Hail Denmark. Praise Mata Nui.
Classic Space is gonna win this by a landslide but I really want my Black Falcons castle.
Also, Time Cruisers? Imagine having the wealth of classic Lego at your disposal and voting for 'vomited together spare parts we had a surplus of in our warehouse'.
I voted Imperials, M-tron and Ice Planet
Wooden toys?
Guessing something boring and predictable's gonna win.
Trains, Town and Paradisa for me. I'd be happy with anything that isn't Bionicle, though.....
Which means Bionicle will no doubt win.
I appreciate the pictures on the Ideas blog to remind me of the differences between some of these themes. I picked Adventurers, Paradisa, and Studios, but I am pretty confident that the winners will be space, pirates, and some form of castle.
All of those suggested entries are pure gold, it was a struggle to pick 3. Even better would be if Lego made it an annual revival, improving one classic set in a grand way as they release a new modular every January.
Aren't Town, Trains, and Model Team kind of still being released today in one form or another? I'm sure Space, Castle, and Pirates will be the top three at least.
Adventurers would be amazing!
As much as I love trains and classic space we have gotten a bit of both what with lego movie and crocodile new train line (still crossing fingers for steam engines though).

Thats a pretty genius idea.
And yes, a total struggle to pick just three to vote for.
Most of these themes are before my time, but I became familiar with them after reading a book called "A Million Little Bricks". I think a modern interpretation of Ice Planet 2002 or Adventurers would be absolutely awesome!
I voted for the two I mentioned above and Classic Space.
"Vote for classic space to celebrate Lego's 90th anniversary!"
Rock. Raiders. Come on people, teal is back, we can make this happen! Or don't you want giant chrome drills?
Seriously though, I kinda want mini tributes to *all* those themes. Collectible vignettes?
Very difficult to narrow it down, I'd love wolfpack to win but I cannot see anything but three of space, pirates, castle and Bionicle making it.
If it were a series of releases then I'd be all in on train in the "make your own" theme but as a one off, would Lego want to make another pirate set with the creator ship and barracuda bay so recently released, and would they want another castle set so close to blacksmith?
Or is this another gimmick or ploy where they have a set already to go and ate using the vote as a ruse?
Interesting that Town, Divers and Trains are all considered legacy themes, given that they all have modern equivalents.
And before someone points it out, I’d consider a one-off Trains set to be equivalent to the other one-off train sets we get.
I voted for Classic Castle, Imperials and Adventurers, but i guess we already know that among the top 3 will be Bionicle and Classic Space ...
I know it's overrated but I would easily spend $300 on a refurbished Classic Space Set
Also the lack of Western themes?
Bionicle is the line that saved the LEGO company from going bankrupt, I think it deserves to win more than most of the other themes on the list.
I picked:
Black Knights (bias but that castle was my childhood dream)
Imperials (since we got barracuda and creator ship they need an enemy)
Adventurers (because adventurers)
I know the nostalgia factor is huge, but I think the classic space won't be good winner. you can get figures from the lego movie 2 set in four colors and lets face it, the classic space sets was kinda khm lame. so I would vote for sets where the minifigures are unique and we didn't get them more than 20 years now.
I'd be game for an adventurers set that was about collecting the golden armor.
But the set could have a few different builds that cover each subtheme: Mummy, Jungle, Dino Island, and Orient Expedition.
The set could essentially cover a globetrotting adventure in a single set.
I will be attempting to vote for the 31st theme - “do whatever you want LEGO”.
Vote Adventurers! We might not get droves of Classic Space, Pirates or Castle, but they haven't been completely gone for the last 17 years. One amazing modern Adventurers set would be a dream come true. Classic Space fans, you had your Spaceship, Spaceship! SPACESHIP! Pirates had their Barracuda Bay, Imperial Flagship and other great sets, while Castle have had several amazing sets, with the Blacksmith Shop as the latest example. Now, let's pave the way for a truly epic, exciting, booby trap filled, crown jewel for the Adventurers theme. Show good ol' Johnny Thunder some love!
Oh come on, no Futuron but Time Cruisers are included? From the selection I hope for Lion Knights win. Although most likely Classic Space will.
Btw, did anybody else get a message like this after voting? “Awaiting Approval Please note, it may take 1-2 business days to for your submission to be approved.” What is there to approve? :)
Really hoping Johnny Thunder will make a full return in a new Adventurers set!
Aquazone, M-Tron, Adventurers, Ice Planet, Space, Castle, can't decide, also is Blacktron I and II? This one could be like a two in one...
M-Tron! Or Space PolicePolice I!
Yes, I know, no chance for that :/
Wonderful idea! Even though my votes are certainly "boring", it's nice to see so many good options!
Ice Planeeett! :D
Voted for:
Paradisa, Wolfpack and of course BIONICLE
Bionicle, Rock Raiders and Adventurers all got my vote since they were the ones I remember most fondly from my childhood. I then told them a good sub theme for Bionicle would be the Rahi beasts, figuring the possibility to modernize one in Technic fully exists.
I love Trains, but it already had an anniversary set recently, it doesn't need more.
Allowing Classic Space (in several forms), Pirates and Castle feels cheap. All of those themes have had their day in the sun lately via Ideas or the Lego Movie. So if they won it's a case of "jeez the same three themes Gen X AFOLs keep picking again and again." So yeah, I am fiercely guarding my Bonk vote here because hell I want my nostalgia to have its day in the sun too for once (at least Rock Raiders would give us TEAL and who doesn't love Johnny Thunder either?)
My votes went to Alpha Team, Adventurers, and Classic Space. One theme that I have heavy early childhood nostalgia for, and two that I was always jealous that they were before my time. Simple. :-)
Come on. It has to be Scala.

Just wanted this to be read one more time, @Lego group
Huw's been grooming us for weeks to be outraged that Scala isn't in the running.
Lion Knights, Forestmen, and Studios for me. Even though I grew up with mid-late 80’s and 90’s sets I was mainly into Town then, but feel I missed out on big gray walled castles. Also, I always felt I could integrate a Studio backlot into my Town display for more playability.
The other themes either didn’t interest me or have current themes or recently released sets that did what I feel this vote intends. I got my Adventures kick with the shout outs included in Haunted House this past year.
I feel like space is gonna win but I'm rootin for castle
I voted for Model Team, Foresters and Black Knights.
All the Trons/Spyrius/Exploriens/etc. are so similar it’d be better to posit them as a combination of all in one set. Same with the various Castle and Pirates themes.
It doesn’t feel that long ago to me that Pirates, Castle and Space themes were revived in various incarnations, and Bionicle already came back and failed.
I’d lean towards adventures, but would love to see it reimagined with less of the imperialism.
Blacktron!!!!! Or Wolfpack!!!! Common!!!!
Where’s the love for Forestmen? That was an easy first choice for me! Then Adventurers and Dragon Knights.
I'd love to see Adventurers, simply as it's iconic / quintessential and unlikely to see a full range anytime soon so a one edition set as homage would seem perfect to me.. but know with this list there aren't many wrong answers, just lots of great choices.
not sure what the point of the poll is, given that the same theme always wins
Adventurers and Imperial Guards have my vote, and something else...
I'd love to vote train, but as has been pointed out, it recently had a couple of tributes and they'll *hopefully* keep producing a large train each year now. I'd honestly love to see what a modern Time Cruiser's set with all of TLG's resources thrown into it looks like, we might finally figure out what the theme was supposed to be!
Adventurers is 1 for me, what a fantastic theme! I actually played with these sets when I was too old for play. (As if one could be too old for play...)
Voted Blacktron and Forestmen for other two, but there are a lot of great themes there, Lego.
I voted Black Falcons, Forestmen, and Imperials. I think those would be the most fun to pair with the recent Ideas sets.
I’m sure Classic Space will win. Classic Castle has a shot too, but I’m not 100% sure most people will be thinking specifically of the yellow bricks unless they look at the pictures. I almost made that mistake myself because I think of the lions and Falcons as part of the “classic castle” theme from my childhood (mid-80s-early 90s is when my brother and I were into Lego).
teambionicle
Oh one more section in my Lion Knights wall <3
Blacktron, train, Classic castle
Fans of system LEGO are going to split their votes all over the place (Space! Forestmen! Castle!), while the Bionicle fanboys only have their one option to vote for.
It's as rigged as it could be without actually being intentionally rigged.
If LEGO were smart they'd do 4-5 sets from the 4-5 most popular choices. They did multiple sets for the Star Wars anniversary the other year after all, so why wouldn't they care about their own IP just as much?
The time has come for us to bring back BIONICLE

My thought exactly although I wouldn't mind a harbor to pass.
I predict that the top 3 will be Classic Space, Adventurers and BIONICLE
@Huw, I just contacted you about this, sorry but that Scalia article diverted me from scrolling down more (great series).
Having 3 in the final could end up being a bit unfair if you have say have two space and one castle it could split the space vote. But let's be honest thats the only way classic space won't win.

But without the 80s themes, would it have meant as much to a lot of us here? Arguably, parents’ nostalgia and Afols drive the market for them.
Classic Space honestly deserves a genuine, no strings attached, heaping spoonful of love in this decade.
I find the vitriol against it to be oddly misplaced, it was one of the three cornerstones on which the lego system became what it is today. And all fans have really gotten is maybe the occasional slight nod, the tiny but much appreciated Benny's Space Squad, and a single orange guy in a $30 book with no real way to obtain them in bulk without selling a kidney.
Admittedly though, I would make a good faith argument for Futuron over CSpace - for thematic reasons.
Glad we get 3 votes and a write-in.
Had to pick my namesake as well.
In the end, I'd quite like a real set celebrating the history/evolution of lego rather than a popularity contest.
Model Team would be amazing.
Adventurers, Rock Raiders, Bionicle. As a Lego fan of the late 90s, that's not even a difficult question, from my perspective.
...though I also thoroughly expect all three of them to be vastly overwhelmed by votes for Castle and Space, and I'm fine with that. But those are my personal choices, by a wide margin!
ADVENTURERS! I actually submitted a "Return of the Adventurers" model to Ideas once (https://ideas.lego.com/projects/ecca7b07-4693-4625-92e9-b1a7a5b61d1e), but it didn't get a lot of votes. I hope the theme will score better in this poll.
With regard to the perceived dislike for Classic Space, I think that is because the range has been celebrated by LEGO on various occasions. There have been multiple sets, minifigures and an entire character from The LEGO Movie dedicated to Classic Space! Seeing repeated calls for more might therefore seem strange because LEGO already pays regular tribute to Classic Space while other influential themes are overlooked.
Personally, I would favour something different on this occasion so I voted for Adventurers, Imperial Guards and Rock Raiders. I also respect BIONICLE and would be happy for that to win, although I have little personal connection to the range.
I must also mention that some options seem bizarre to me. Presenting an enormous range like Town alongside numerous tiny subthemes, including several which belong beneath the Town umbrella, is surely going to manipulate the result.
"Is there a specific subtheme [...]?"
monorail Monorail MONORAIL!
Why don’t we just go to the final round now - we already know it will be Space, Castle and Pirates
Although I fear the Classic Space will win no matter what we do, for obvious reason I did not vote for it. We've had a wonderful 70816 Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! not that long ago, let's make some 'space' (you see what I did there?) for something more unique.
My votes are:
1. Adventurers - sure, a bit of homage to that was a recent 10273 Haunted House, but not really. It was a great theme, well designed, with Johnny Thunder becoming as iconic as Captain Redbeard.
2. Aquazone - that was a blast of the '90s! Loved the whole theme as a kid, would like to see a modern iteration.
3. Xtreme Team - just because it was 'something else' back in the day. Show us those crazy vehicles!
Maybe voting for a Best Year would have been better, then re-releasing a selection of classic sets across all ranges from that year.
I’ll go with 1983.
The number of votes cast will be a useful indicator to TLG regard which non-winning themes could make a successful comeback. If Harbour gets half as many votes as the winner, and the winner sells tremendously well, that bodes well for Habour.

Unfortunately that is not going to happen
Not much love for Paradisa I fear... but one can dream!
No Wild West :(
Bionicle and Adventures have to be bolted on favourites as they don’t split the demographic they appeal to. I assume the Ideas team are desperately angling for anything other than Classic Space vs Classic Castle vs Pirates (not that we’re predictable or anything)

"
So Spaceship, Sapceship, Spaceship doesn't count? Exosuit doesn't count?"
No offense to the designer but Exo Suit is not a classic space set, it retains none of the design philosophies or aesthetics, not even any of the color schemes. The only thing space-y about it are the two green astronauts shoehorned in and those came with modern helmets.
Spaceship Spaceship Spaceship is a bit more complicated. It's a kid's toy and uses a lot of modern design philosophies - which ideally it should be and should have, I'm not knocking that. But it is not the sort of Barracuda Bay adult-level love letter I'd hazard fans are looking for.
Worth mentioning that they were both also over 6 years ago.
There's this specific niche that I'd hazard I'm not the only one wanting filled. Either way, I still don't see the reason for people being downright toxic at the thought of Classic Space getting more than a logo printed here or there.
MONORAIL - as a Subtheme. PLEASE
Feels pretty disingenuous of them to split Classic Castle, Lion Knights, Black Falcons etc into different themes. Like come on, they're pretty much one and the same line and this just makes the vote messy and ensures neither is picked in the end despite the overall theme's overwhelming popularity.
I will vote for Model team, M tron, Town, Blacktron and also Monorail.
Curious which theme will win. Voted for Town, Imperials & M-Tron.

Likewise, I immediately thought Classic Castle, not even realising Lion Knights & Black Falcons would be considered separate themes.
As to what is selected, I think its going to come down to doability. If the winner relies on a lot of defunct parts or colours, unlikely to succeed IMO. Many if the space themes may fall in that category, especially with all the specific transparent stuff that is core to the look. Bionicle, likewise, that seems to largely rely on now defunct parts.
My guess would be this is a core reason for both allowing 3 inyo the finsl vote and keeping the final vote secret. They've been upfront that the final vote doesn't determine the final choice.
anything BUT Alpha Team - the faces on the minifigs are just weird and creep me out.
I only voted for two:
Classic Space -- 497 to be specific
Classic Castle -- 375 to be specific

With all due respect, what Classic Space has gotten over the past decade generally amounts to the occasional wink or nod. A logo here, a figure there. Maybe a mini model, but nothing so steeped in love and care as Barracuda Bay.
Frankly, if Lego Star Wars got this kind of treatment, the fanbase would have pitchforks sharpened and torches lit. Again.
And as much as my heart belongs to the quirky themes of my childhood, it would be naive of me to think they're influential enough to represent the company for its anniversary.
Shoutouts to Aquazone, Rock Raiders, Throwbots, Time Cruisers and Ice Planet.
Please don't choose Classic Space! The other subthemes deserve a bit of TLC too! We've already had like 9 different homages to it in the last 10 years alone.
Yes, the theme was nostalgic. But so are the other themes right? Don't turn this into another classic space homage _again_
That said, this poll is going to be wild, what with 2/3 of it being castle and space subthemes. That will likely ensure one of either theme will be chosen. But it might eat votes away from other entries.
I know it wouldn't be fair after Barracuda Bay, but I've submitted Pirates and Imperials anywhay :D (plus one of castle themes)
I really don't like that a bunch of what I would consider subthemes to Space and Castle are listed as their own themes, which is just gonna split the vote and most likely make Bionicle win
No hate to Bionicle fans but I don't think it's right to have a non-System set as the main set for a big anniversary
I feel the better option would be to have a wave of 5 sets (just like Lego Star Wars 20th), consisting of a Space, Castle, Town, Pirates (the main 4 classic themes) and Bionicle
As much as I love a lot of these themes, to pick them to celebrate 90 years would feel a bit odd.
"To celebrate 90 years of lego, we've made paradisa/extreme team/artic set...?"
Only space/castle/town would feel right.
If they hadn't divided it in to subthemes it'd be an easy choice of Castle, Pirates and Adventurers. however as they have it's much harder. I guess it's too recent, but it's a shame that Vikings isn't one of the options.
Aquazone, Adventurers and Forestmen for me...
This is really hard. I wished they would at least make one set per 5 years or something like that, right now it's very 80s versus 90s, childhood versus childhood., and that does not feel good.
Anyway, a big Time Cruisers set would be a chance to smash multiple themes together.
Backtron, Space police 3, Forestmen got my vote!
Classic Space or Town... Please!!!
CLASSIC SPACE and please make a UCS version of Galaxy Explorer
Bionicle shouldn't be on this list. Bionicle had a run in 2016. Anything else on this list would be great to see. Tell your friends and family to join in on the vote with you. Let's not let Bionicle fans ruin this for us like Star Wars fans ruined the Brickhead vote. Jaws or Lilo & Stitch would have been something new and great but monotony prevailed. We can't let that happen again.
Don't get me wrong I love Bionicle and Star wars but... c'mon people. LEGO extends the olive branch and people just set it on fire.
I'd have voted for Classic Space three times if I could. However in the end I went for:
Classic Space
Town
Trains
Black Knights, Forestmen and Lion Knights :)
Adventures
Blacktron
Studios
Three votes is definitely not enough. So many good themes to choose from...
I would have picked them all (yes, even Paradisa), but I'll have to go with these:
Adventurers,
Xtreme Team (because why not),
Rock Raiders
Paradise... I have waited so long...
I also wouldn’t mind a revisit of the studios theme though!
I voted Forestmen, Blacktron and M:Tron, some of my favorite themes from my childhood (duh). Pirates and Classic Space would have been my first choices, but we already have a great representative set for Pirates (do I have to name it?), and Benny's Spaceship has been a good representative for Classic Space. We could also use a good castle, whichever subtheme it is from...
Uh, monorail? I think to celebrate the anniversary, we need something seriously out of the box.
@Vladtheb said:
"Oh man, do we have to choose one? I want almost all of these."
You are allowed to choose 3 for the first vote.
Seeing as we’ve recently gotten Benny’s Spaceship, Barracuda Bay, and now the new blacksmith shop, I chose not to vote for any space, pirates, or castle theme. Instead I voted for Town, Paradisa, and Adventurers. It’s a shame that the wild west theme wasn’t an option. I’d love a large set of western storefronts in the style of Diagon Alley
The issue with "Classic Castle" and "Classic Space" is that they are usually not referring to those particular limited series, but to the whole range of sets that was done in the 90s or before. So by splitting up all those subthemes, fans of those series will be divided. Which leaves Bionicle as an almost certain winner because they didn't split it in subseries.
My votes probably go for Aquazone, Adventurers and probably Pirates, but not by much.
For those trashing Time Cruisers, clearly you weren't kids when those came out. They had FANTASTIC playability, encompassed really well the "build whatever you can think of" Lego was pushing on kids, and they had great technic functions as well. We had the flying boat, the train, and some other smaller ones, and had great fun with all the provided elements. They're not sets for AFOL, but they were a great success with their target audience.
Lego designers Nick Vas and Toothdominoes have both professed the winner they want to see.

Even though there are some great themes, there are only two sets, in my opinion that are the true holy grail. The Yellow Castle and Classic Space Galaxy Explorer. For many, its these two sets that started our Lego love as a child. The Galaxy Explorer is my 1 and it doesn't hurt that it was Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen's (former president CEO of Lego) favorite set also.
I'd love for it to be bionicle, and for the set to be a take on Mata Nui's original body. That way, you could work around the possibility that a lot of bionicle specific parts are potentially retired and made it a bit moresystem parts, something like one of the annual big Ninjago Mechs where the stystem parts really create the right texture.
I think that classic space fans shouldn't be too worried about their votes being split compared to the one ballot line that Bionicle is restricted to- you do have 3 votes, so that's Space Police, Blacktron and a third subtheme of your choice there. SO two big names and a niche choice, you're good.
Edit: SP, Blacktron and Classic SPace. I could easily see space fans using their 3 votes to put all 3 over the top. So no room for a niche choice, maybe, but tbh if the niche space subthemes weren't individual items, they wouldn't be the focus of a more general space set, would they? A general space banner would focus on one or two of the big space themes, not Ice Planet or whatever.
Classic Space, Classic Castle, and Black Falcons. Considered Blacktron, Town and Trains. Might have voted for Atlantis, Monster Fighter or Alien Conquest if those were options.
Also voted for Huwbot.
I will also join some others in saying the Exosuit 21109 was not 'classic' space. It is neat, and I would have liked it as part of 1983-85, but as a stand alone I did not feel like I was building a Classic Space when I got it. 70841 was better in that regard.
I would also support a revival/update of 6000. Maybe even a series to visit/showcase several themes.
Time Cruisers!
They put all those Space subthemes i there and left out Futuron? I guess Classic Space is destined to win this anyway.
Classic Space, Adventurers, Lion Knights. Should have entered "specifically the Galaxy Explorer" in the subtheme box, but I didn't think of that before hitting the submit button.
Forestmen, Black Falcons, and Town for me :)
ADVENTURES FANS LETS GOOOOOO
Space, castle, pirates, although I did prefer the old town than current city but this is fairly current, the others aren’t.
I was kind of expecting Vikings to be in here. Should we make anything of its absence from this list?
@drscottypavarotti said:
"I was kind of expecting Vikings to be in here. Should we make anything of its absence from this list?"
Yes; that the themes on this list are 20 years or older and Vikings is only from 15 years ago.
Spyrius! But I’ll take anything as long as it isn’t bionicle
Classic Space
Classic Town... don't they have a City line already? Unless they make a huge set using as much as possible time-appropriate parts, I don't see how different it can be.
I know older Lego fans love their classic space but it's so plain you can just do it yourself. Easy vote for Bionicle.
Gosh! I've never even heard of half of those themes! Was hoping to see a monorail option (as, apparently, were a few others), but I'm guessing that's not an option.
Will have a think before voting.
Classic Space, Classic Castle, and Model Team are my choices.
I wish I could vote but LEGO won’t let me. I have an older LEGO account which LEGO can’t integrate with Ideas. So as a result of LEGO’s IT ineptitude, I can’t vote on or contribute to Ideas. And I’m not alone in being locked out for that reason. Shame on LEGO!
If I could vote, it would be Classic Space, Dragon Knights and either Lion Knights or Forestmen.
SSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was very mean of Lego to divide up the votes for castle and space with all the popular subthemes. I love the idea of making this an annual thing with a new 18+ nostalgia set every year. That way we can all win.
I went with Lion Knights, Blacktron, and M-tron. I wish they were making a set from several different themes to commemorate it as if buy from many of the options. Classic space, pirates, different castle themes, space police, etc would all get a serious look if they went that route
Blacktron Forever! The GOAT of space themes (my favourite anyway). Throw in some Futuron small fighters and it's a killer set.
Also Forestmen, as they deserve an Endor-style Sherwood Forest hideout, and haven't had a return yet.
Lastly Classic Space, but in the cleaner looking white/blue livery which needs some love :)
Classic Space, because.
Blacktron, because a remake of Message Intercept Base or Renegade would be epic!
M-Tron, because we were cheated out of an official M-Tron base back in the day.
Classic Space - because it doesn't need any villains Just good old space exploration.
For your consideration...
Bionicle (would love to see Toa and Bohrok return in some form)
Adventurers (Orient Expedition)
Studios (Universal Monsters)
Well I've browsed all the themes, and as I don't have any nostalgic link to most of them, I've just picked the three I like the look of the most:
Trains
Classic Castle
Model Team
Be interested to see which other two themes make it to the final, along with with Classic Space...
Am I missing something? Trains have been reimagined. They're still called Trains. Town has been reimagined. It's called City. Model Team has been reimagined. It's called Creator Expert. Divers and Aquazone have been reimagined. It was called Atlantis.
Pirates have recently been reimagined: Barracuda Bay.
Before knowing the options it was clear to me what I was going for: Castle, Pirates, Space! But seeing the actual entries makes ist sooo difficult to select three over the rest. In the end I was surprised by my own choices. Going for less obvious picks which, in my opinion, deserve as much a revival than the ones gaining usually most of the attention. In any case: Imperials, M-Tron and PARADISA for the win!
PS: where was the Western theme?
Trains, Town, Model Team
I voted Ice Planet 2002, Blacktron, and Aquazone. I love the designs and color scheme of those lines. None of them are going to win though.
I just hope its not Bionicle. I know people love it, but I just don't get it. At ALL. Ugly, unimaginative sets that all look exactly the same.
Adventurers, Blacktron, Classic Castle.
Adventurers most of all.
I agree Classic Space receives nods from Lego, but I think its popularity points to a larger general Space market to cater to. I don't know if the scarcity and nostalgia factor builds the demand, and whether an updated theme would spoil things. However, Space as a larger original theme away from the drab grey wedges of so many Star Wars sets should have room to exist. For one of the Big Four foundational themes alongside Town, Pirates and Castle, I'd say it doesn't get enough love from Lego. If it were better served, it would allow more room for other worthy themes like Adventurers and Forestmen in limited releases like this. (I always preferred Blacktron and Futuron anyway, so a new Space theme please, Lego, just Space something!)
What would be interesting is the results of a similar competition in 10 years time. Would it be loaded with film licences or original themes? Which would have the most fond memories and longevity?
Lion Knights, Black Falcons and Forestmen. This was my childhood more than classic space. We have plenty of spaceships and rockets etc... We need Castles back!
Classic Space all the way, followed by Classic Castle and Trains. Simple as that.
By the way, many of the names on that list must have happened during my dark ages, because I have never heard of some of them, such as Wolfpack (I always think of U-boats when I hear that term), Extreme Team or Lion Knights.
Now that I have looked up Wolfpack I know why I have never heard of it. This would have been part of Classic Castle over here, where set names used to be quite different to the English versions. Then again, this "theme" appears to have been just three sets. Not much of a theme if you ask me.
The omission of the western theme clearly surprised me at first too, but maybe it is considered a bit touchy nowadays.
I love it nonetheless.
It’s arguably a timeless classic.
But even back then there wasn’t even a single set which contained cowboys and Indians together.
The odd thing about this is the fragmentation of "Castle" into all the various sub-themes ... Lion Knights, Black Falcons, Wolfpackers, Forestmen etc. I'd quite like to see a large set with a number of these factions. And I suspect this diminishes the likelihood of any given Castle theme rising to the surface.

You're being extremely hostile. At no point did I say it wasn't proper, nor did I say it wasn't good enough. What it isn't is what I, an adult fan, wanted. People keep calling for a UCS style set and that's what myself and others want.
But sure, call us names. That'll get your point across real well.
Though it would be nice to see a space theme on shelves for once that isn't militarized, stereotypical good guy humans vs bad guy aliens.
Classic space is more than just a logo or a color scheme. There's more to it than aesthetics, or a particular shade of gray. There's a reason why people revere it, even if they never grew up with it. Those philosophies permeated lego space for years, well beyond the end of CS. You can see it all the way through the 80s and 90s.
I agree that all of the subthemes present are kind of strange, but I think this is a fantastic idea! I'd love to see Paradisa return since I love the color scheme of the sets, but getting more Classic Space or Castle would be cool too. I'm a little bit confused about the wording for the second vote - one of these will be the theme that the set is based on, but we still want to see what's most popular? Doesn't that make it sound like they already know what they're making and that theme will be included in the top 3 for the second vote?

Similar with Classic Space by the way, which by my recollection included themes such as Blacktron, M-Tron, Space Police or Ice Planet.
@GoldenNinja3000
They'll be selecting which theme the set will be from out of the top three from the first vote. The second vote is "just for fun" to see what is the most popular of those three.
So, say Time Cruisers, Ice Planet, and Paradisa win the first vote, the Ideas team will have free reign to chose their favorite of those three, regardless which one wins the second vote.

Ah, okay! Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Big debate here! Curious to see the actual results in the end. I voted Paradisa, Imperials & Adventurers. Town was too big of an umbrella for me. Although I do like Fabuland as well but guess that's not really 'in scope'.

The only reason they revere it, is bias, based on their childhood memories. When you take off your nostalgia goggles, you'll see, the CS sets what they truly are: blocky and primitive, with boring minifigs that look like teletubbies. They didn't introduced any new pieces, the builds are unappealing and ugly, with doubtful play features, and it's just clunky and awkward. Classic Space was the first Sci-Fi theme for Lego, sure, but the ones that came after it, did a better job in set design and theming. I didn't grow up with it, and what I say is objective. Sorry man, I just don't feel the magic."
I didn't grow up with Classic Space, I grew up with Aquazone and Ice Planet because that's what got handed down to me. I have very little in the way of nostalgia bias for Classic Space, I just appreciate it for what it is and what it did. You want to talk blocky and simplistic, go look at Life on Mars - a theme I'm more than likely supposed to be nostalgic for.
The builds aren't nearly as simplistic as you claim, especially towards the latter end, and even sets as early as the Alpha-I Rocket Base have plenty going on in them. There were plenty of new parts introduced across the line. Frankly most of your argument boils down to personal opinion, which you're entitled to.
CS's biggest weakness tends to be the fragility of several parts and designs, though that's true of Lego as a whole in the 70s-80s, and gradually got ironed out over time.
The core philosophy and what I'd hazard is the appeal of the line, which carried on to its predecessors, is that they tend to leave a lot of room for the imagination. There's an element of good, clean fun with a splash of bright colors.
Sure later waves/subthemes improved over the original, but they all have their roots in the design philosophies and ideas starting in Classic Space.
We've gotten Classic Space tributes recently. We just got Barracuda Bay for Pirates. There's rumored Castle stuff coming out later this year. 2021 is Bionicle's 20th anniversary. It's a theme that saved the Lego company, along with Star Wars and Harry Potter. I think it deserves a tribute! That being said, I'll be happy with almost any of these themes winning.
Voted for TRAINS! :D
Voted for Bionicle, Adventertures and Alpha team
Team BIONICLE!
I went for BIONICLE, Classic Space, and Ice Planet (though if Insectoids was on there I would've chosen it over IP)
I mentioned on an article a few days ago that reboots of lines like Pirates 2015 or BIONICLE gen 2 seem to fail while one-offs like Barracuda Bay and Benny's Space Squad sell like hot cakes, and so I thought LEGO Should to more one-off Legacy sets. Hopefully the runners up of this contest get their time to shine in the future!
For example, perhaps the 1 spot could get a >$100 set in spring of 2022 while the top 2-5 could get <$50 sets in fall of 2022? That would be fun!
I think I won’t be happy with the outcome of this vote, because it’s going to be so predictable with overrated, overhyped nostalgia.
(No hate, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and vote!)
An Ewok Village-sized, Foresters tree complex grand enough to put 6079 Dark Forest Fortress, and its "$100 for an unbroken baseplate(!)" to shame!
If I was rooting for whole themes instead of just one set ->
The year 2022 would fit like a pressurized thermal glove for an Ice Planet 2nd wave. The astronauts of Krysto will have moved beyond just setting up, surveying, and reporting; they would now be about the tasks of extracting blocks of fresh water ice and transporting them to all the inhabited worlds in the greater local sector. A treasure worth it's life-sustaining weight in gold to criminal elements such as the Blacktron Empire.
A minifig scale Heroica Castle subtheme would cover A LOT of medieval fantasy tropes without the need for a licensed IP. Otherwise, torn between Black Knights, Foresters, and Dragon Masters. (No Royals?)
It's also high-tide time that the Imperial Bluecoats had a vessel with as many sails as the Barracuda! Bluecoats not available, sooo.... Adventurers.

There is a non militarised space theme, City Space.
You asked why there is vitriol against bringing back classic space, a big reason is when lego does modern versions of classic space and people still complain that it isn't classic space. Any modern sets should look modern and not copy designs that are 40 years old.]]
Last I checked, people really liked Benny's Space Squad. Sure there are going to be humbugs, but there's always going to be humbugs.
As for City Space, I shouldn't really have to explain this but there's quite a difference between something mostly grounded in reality versus something largely built on fantasy. Maybe if you squint really hard. There's a reason the "we don't need X, we have it at home" retort is a meme.
Anyhow if we're planning on throwing out 40 year old designs we could start with the Millennium Falcon, Tie Fighter, X-Wing...
Also what's with the obsession with modern aesthetics? This being a 90 year anniversary aside, modern aesthetics are not necessarily better for a variety of reasons that should be self evident if you've lived through any of the last 50 years or so.
I went for:
Train (4558 Metroliner).
Town (6399 Airport Shuttle) **MONORAIL!!**.
Model Team (5580 Highway Rig).
On a sidenote, how on EARTH can tiny themes like Arctic and Time Cruisers be anything near a 'classic theme'!?!
And BIONICLE, omg.. that is the first and last time I have thrown genuine LEGO in the trash. Because it is.
I've made up my mind.
Aquazone: underwater space.
Rock Raiders: underground Space!
Blacktron: ...dark side of the Moon? SPACE!
I'd love some Paradisa, but not sure it would be the same without the same pink?
I’ve always looked at Classic Space and thought “hey I like that”. It has its own charm to it from the 70s & 80s plus I love the classic spaceman.
Bionicle ftw!
Train - can we dream about electrified rails?

I vote for trains because I want a modern 12v set and other two themes are iconic
cast vote Blacktron, Forestmen, space, it's a pity it's a classic space and not a futuron with monorail 6990

The problem with this vote is that many people won't be happy with the results if only one set will be made (or one or even two themes chosen for temporary resurrection).
I've grown up with Classic Space, so I am totally biased of course. I could be unhappy if Classic Space doesn't win.
So could the large Bionicle fan community if their favorite doesn't make it. Same goes for all the other proposed themes.
Some people have mentioned a great idea. LEGO could start a new theme, something like "Retro Classics 2.0" which could yield an annual set similar to the line of Modulars. Every year could bring a new interpretation of one classic theme. That way fans of all the great classics would have something to look forward to, and still it would not be blown out of proportion.
I really wish they wouldn't add "Trains" to the list, it'll just play with my heart and give me hope, just to see it completely ignored :(

Lego released The Lone Ranger sets with Indians and soldiers just a few years ago.
Castle, Knights (any), Pirates, Trains - I cannot choose.
I like space, but I have Benny's Spaceship recently, so happy with that. Anything Castle and Knights will have their votes split though :(
Although the idea of Retro Classics as an annual theme sounds excellent as suggested by @Rimefang.

I like this idea. I always thought they should resurrect Legends and give it another shot.
It's working well for Ninjago at the moment with the Legacy sub-theme which is a similar concept. You could easily apply Legacy to any theme and update some classic sets and create completely new ones within those classic themes.
This way we all get what we want.

It was a licensed line and not legos own creation. It’s much harder to put an ideology behind it because they can just say: “it was in the movie”. Plus because it’s just movie, the sets themes have to be much more strict too.
Classic Space
Classic Castle
Adventurers
Call me predictable, but I know what I like. :)
Much enjoying the passionate discussion across the themes here, and taking my nostalgia goggles off, I am still going to vote for Classic Space, or at least when I was growing up, was just Space. Interesting too to see the way Lego have mixed themes and sub-themes which may fragment the voting and the community. Their commitment to transparency, at least in this round will make some fascinating reading. I am an AFOL now with Benny’s spaceship and was fortunate to have 375 Castle, 928 Space Cruiser and the original Barracuda growing up (and long since given away!). Classic Space sits at a historical nexus for the growth and direction of Lego and helped to take it beyond Town and further spark children’s imagination - that for me, as well as my childhood bias make it feel like a good anniversary fit.
Looking ahead to 2022, Ideas has now done Pirates in 2020 (with complementary Creator set), with the Blacksmith it looks like Castle this year, why not Space in 2022? Whatever the result though, the passion across the fanbase and the breadth of themes and choice (past and present) continues to be exciting and encouraging.
@SirBrickalotOfLego:
You might be surprised. Castle and Space are each split between seven sub-themes, while other popular themes only show up once. And in the second round of voting, tiered choices are going to make a huge difference, so that maybe the theme that has the highest vote total going into the second round doesn't pick up any additional votes, and simply gets buried under the other two finalists' tallies.
@LegoSonicBoy:
20 years is long enough that people who were born right after those themes launched are now old enough to have their own kids. Themes that are 10 years old would be premature, since Ninjago is still a current theme, while Batman and Spiderman have been rolled into DC and Marvel, and very little else that was original and came out between 2001 and 2011 has the following to really stand a chance.
@tgewin:
Lion Knights and Black Falcons both have their own entries on the list, so if anyone thinks Classic Castle refers to either of those, it's their fault for not reading.
@Graysmith:
I would not be even remotely surprised if Bionicle makes it to the top three, but after that it has to beat two other finalists. For Bionicle to actually win, I think it would need to land votes from about 40% of the voters, and get matched up against two equally-loved opponents. I don't see it picking up a lot of additional votes in the finals. Conversely, Castle and Space are each split seven ways in the first round, which means they could both get completely shut out in the first round. If they don't, however, it means getting just a single candidate through the first round gives them a huge pool of voters who might throw their support behind _any_ Castle/Space theme that remains.
As for why they did multiple SW sets...consider the fact that SW has lasted over 20 years, the Disney Empire takeover, the Disney Wars movies, and still shows no signs of being ripe for cancellation. The only two original themes on this list that have actually lasted longer than SW are Town and Trains. Town, now City, is still a major theme in their catalog, but it's going through another rocky patch at the moment. Trains has survived, but not thrived, to this point, as it's considered a big year when they get one new sets.
I voted Ice Planet as my 1. I don't think it's gonna win compared to the others though..

Them’s fightin’ words
@CapnRex101:
Oh, this vote is going to get very messy. I think Bionicle has a shot at making the finals just because it was the most popular theme when it debuted. I think Classic Space/Castle both have a shot because people won't read the full list and realize that it specifically means pre-Futuron Space and yellow castle Castle. That will probably have more of an impact on Castle than Space, since actual Classic Space is still one of the most popular Space themes, while I don't think the same can be said for Classic Castle over some of the later sub-themes.
Town does have an advantage in that it's got arguably the largest back catalog if you consider World City and City to be evolutions more than proper sub-themes. Pirates, Adventurers, and Aquazone were never as popular as the Big Three, but aside from one Pirates sub-theme, they also won't be splitting their votes. Beyond that, Trains have a loyal following that feels underappreciated, Model Team is really the only theme that would appeal to Technic fans, and Rock Raiders is something I see mentioned regularly with fondness. Otherwise, unless one of the Castle/Pirates/Space sub-themes manages to squeak through, I see a lot of filler on the list.
@Kynareth:
Even in a straight-up fight with no sub-themes, I think Bionicle would do well going toe-to-toe with those three. There are a few others I could see having a valid shot as well. Judging by the comments, a _lot_ of people are excluding themes that they feel have gotten too much love in recent years, which will greatly impact the vote regardless of how it's set up.
@krysto2002:
Um...what? You know, the first set I ever got that came in the recognized Classic Space color theme (blue w/ trans-yellow) was Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! My brother and I had a ton of actual pre-Futuron Classic Space sets when we were kids, but they were always in one of the forgotten color schemes. One was white w/ trans-blue, which would later go on to be associated with Futuron. The other was light-grey w/ trans-green, though I don't think we had many that included trans-green windshields. Rather, they tended to be solid light-grey with an open cockpit. So Exo-Suit perfectly fit my mental image of what a Classic Space set looks like, at least in terms of color scheme.
@AgentKallus:
I'm half-Viking on my mother's side, and I still wouldn't vote for Vikings if it was on the list. The only really good thing they've done Viking-wise is the most recent CMF with the hornless helmet.
@stank2k:
Strike a blow against monotony by picking the same themes that get all the nostalgia attention anyways? Bionicle may have had a brief revival, but it felt more like Hero Factory 2.0 than the original Bionicle theme. I think there's been _one_ minifig that had a Bionicle-themed torso print. No CMFs, and the only Ideas project to clear 10k got shot down. Bionicle fans have been begging for some sort of acknowledgement of how significant a role that theme played in the current state of The LEGO Company, and they are constantly being told that they need to step aside and let someone else have a turn instead. If you want to make sure this vote goes to a theme that's gotten less love from TLC than Bionicle in the last ten years, you better pick Paradisa, Alpha Team, and Time Cruisers.
The Bionicle fans have been initiated.
If you wake one, you wake them all...
I hope imperial guards win or classic castle. Imperial guards are my favorite, and classic castle is number 2 on this list. I’d also like some classic pirate sets back in production to go with my barracuda bay.

I loved Bionicle G2 myself, but it was pretty short lived. Yeah the Bionicle fanbase is rabidly awaiting for another acknowledgement from Lego and the nostalgia is only growing. The Bionicle fandom has entered that sweat spot where they have the time, money and will to become a major force in AFOL fandom. I don't even think the term "Dark Age" applies to a lot of Bionicle fans, a lot of us went straight from being kid Lego fans to AFOL's on our 18th birthdays as we never really lost interest in Lego during our lives.
I mean I don't want to knock on Classic Space, Pirates and Castle; but for almost the entirety of Bionicle's history (and hell a decent part of this thread) that "Holy Trio of Lego Fandom" has been crapping on Bionicle's existence. You think comments like "bland unimaginative crap meant for the TRASH" is something that is not going to make Bionicle fans bitter and ready to pull the rug out from under the "Holy Trio" and dethrone Space, Pirates and Castle from their vaunted pedestal? So yes let there be blood spilled on this battlefield (okay that is a bit dramatic :P )
Seriously though it shows how many Lego fans are oblivious that Bionicle holds the same place of nostalgia the older generations held for the Holy Trio. Look at the fangames, fan music, the archival work by BioMediaProject, how TTV, Mask of Destiny and BZPower have been able to stick around for years; the massive crowd on Maskposting, the canon contests... or even how original Bionicle creators like Greg F, Christian Faber and Nathan Furst are still interacting with the fandom (Nathan Furst even re-recorded the entire soundtrack of the three films and released them as digital albums only a few years ago). Can we say the same for the creators of the Holy Trio themes, can you Tweet the creator of Castle and ask them questions as easy as the Bionicle fandom can ask say Alastair Swinnerton or Greg a question? Or again look at Nick Vas and Toothdominoes both Lego designers who as soon as the Ideas poll launched both of them got on and announced Teambionicle to get fans to vote (not to mention how they snuck in the Kanohi Kakama bonzai tree into the instruction manual for the recent botanical set...) Bionicle's fandom is back on the rebound as nostalgia grows, and this time the fans are adults with purchasing power and open wallets desperately waiting for Lego to give us something. So yeah, give it a few more years and I fully expect that the Holy Trio will begin to wane in nostalgic influence as Bionicle storms back into the spotlight (it it hasn't started already).
G2 failed because it was six years too early if anything...
Ultimately this never should have been an us vs. them situation to begin with (plenty of Bonk fans would also admit to loving Castle or Pirates or Space...) but its been a pretty one sided abuse from the "hobby elders" for 20 long years that I think has caused enough festering resentment we are going to come out and vote en-mass to knock the Holy Trio down when we have a shot.
I can't believe they count some of these as separate themes and not sub-themes (M-Tron, Blacktron, Space Police, Ice Planet, Exploriens don't all count as one Space). I feel like a traitor for not voting for Studio, but Castle/Blacktron/Space Police are better and more likely to win. And where are Insectoids and Western?
Town, Model Team and Aquazone
Town: although there are plenty of CITY sets nowadays, but the theme is narrowed to mostly Police and Fire with huge scale builds. I like the classic scale (e.g. 4 studs wide vehicle) and the decent buildings in the 80s 90s design.
Model Team: surprisingly to include this as an option. Although Creator Expert Line may be treated as the successor of MT, I still miss the building style of the MT sets, especially with the chrome pieces.
Aquazone: personal loving the underwater themes with fictional factions. The colour scheme is also classic and lovely.
So what we really need is a Time Cruisers monorail that explores/travels through vignettes of all the themes throughout the ages, right?
How about a classic Lego advent calendar where each day we get a small set from each of the classic themes?
Strange! Everyone seems to believe Classic Space will win but I have not seen that many people actually vouch for it. I voted for Classic Space and M-Tron (M-Tron were during my dark ages and I believe they had a few very neat sets).
And NO, Spaceship Spaceship Spaceship!!! does not count. That would be like saying that Nexo Knight is castle - heresy! The Idea space suit also does not resemble anything like Classic Space. Classic Space: (1)v-shape grey wings, (2)blue fuselage, (3)transparent yellow windows, (4)yellow and black stripes, (5)white and red spacemen. Points 1 to 3 are definitely important 4 and 5 are optional.
I've said it many times and I will say it again: Lego should create a new "Legacy" theme where a set or two is produced each year from the list presented above. Now the question is: do they have designers that can reproduce the whimsical look and feel of our beloved themes of past... They certainly did a good job with Pirates, so there is high hope! There is just too many to pick just a few.
@Darth_Dee:
You want the "Spa" theme to win?
@tenfootgerbil:
They've gotten a few nods over the years. The green Forestman has appeared in both black (Volume 4) vintage minifig collections, one Bricktober magnet, and got an updated look in CMF S1. The Forestwoman showed up in the original red (Volume 5, which was all females) and revised green (Volume 3) vintage minifig collections. I don't remember seeing any of the Forestmen with colored collars and sleeves, or any instances of the Forestmen or Dark Forest logos on shields. Maybe the only other recent salute to either sub-theme was the inclusion of a statue in handcuffs in 60271.
@oldfan:
M-Tron couldn't afford a base back in the day. All they harvested was magnets, and tons of other Space factions had plenty of those to spare. It's like trying to sell sand in the Middle East.
@AustinPowers:
Where Space (mostly) had clearly delineated factions, Castle didn't do as good a job of identifying theirs. I think this was partly because some of the sub-themes had multiple exclusive factions (the yellow castle had four, and the very next castle had a few more, plus Ninja was only ever identified as a single sub-theme but clearly had three distinct factions represented). I had the yellow castle, and I was never sure if those other three knights were supposed to represent different factions that were against the yellow castle faction, or if they were supposed to be knights who had sworn allegience to the ruler of the yellow castle, but wore their own coats of arms.
Pirates may have been just as bad (hard to tell unless you can see all six sides of some of the boxes), and it didn't help that all three Euro-style factions were Imperial Something. Aquazone is in a similar situation, but they didn't get a split entry on this list.
@Toymaker:
It's not just Castle that got split entries:
1. Classic Space
2. Blacktron
3. Space Police
4. M-Tron
5. Ice Planet 2002
6. Spyrius
7. Exploriens
1. Classic Castle
2. Lion Knights
3. Black Falcons
4. Forestmen
5. Black Knights
6. Wolfpack
7. Dragon Knights
1. Pirates
2. Imperials
1. Town
2. Trains
3. Paradisa
4. Divers
5. Extreme Team
6. Arctic
The other eight entries are top-level themes.
I think this poll/contest/proof of concept thingie isn’t the best idea so far. I don't see any reason why LEGO couldn't do a few sets based on several of these themes.
I myself want BIONICLE to win. It’s a massively successful property of LEGO that was a massive help, it’s a well-developed world with a great story and characters, and I of course have a personal connection to it.
BUT… not only do I like most of these other themes, but I also understand that other people, some of them far older than I am, want to see their theme make it through too. I'd say it's not fair to any party to just have a SINGLE Lego theme for this 90th anniversary.
I could easily see 2, 3, 4 heck even 5 or more sets based on Classic LEGO IPs appear.
I say they should've just made the 3 most popular picks into 3 different sets. That way LEGO fans both younger and older can get a bit of what they love. Of course, I’d argue that the massive multibillion-dollar company could just go ham and give most if not ALL of these themes at least a small set that’d sell well. Classic series like Adventurers, Aquazone, Alpha Team, they all deserve more attention.
Not to mention some of these picks and how they separate them is pretty whack.
Look at Classic Space. One of LEGO's most universally (heh heh) beloved themes. However- Classic Space is not a monolith. It's made up of many subthemes as well, each with a devoted fanbase. Splitting them up almost invites a smaller chance of seeing any Space theme making it.
It’s also odd as- well, one of the best aspect of Classic Space was how all of the subthemes fit in and complemented each other perfectly. M-Tron were merchants, Blacktron are space pirates, the Space Police are… you know.
For instance, my hypothetical set if Classic Space got through is a big space-port, with at least a build or reference to most of it’s subthemes. You’d have a main-ish Classic Space shuttle, an M-Tron rover, a Blacktron fighter, a Space Police speeder, etc. That seems totally doable, and would appeal to ALL Classic Space fans.
Instead? All of the potential options are segregated. Blacktron is set apart from Ice Planet, which is set apart from Exploriens, you get the picture. Doubly odd since, there’s an option to CHOSE a favorite subtheme. What?
And they did this with not just Space, but Castle and Pirates as well.
In addition, I don’t know what they expected to happen with some of these. You think Time Cruisers and Studio weren’t going to get BODIED by Classic Space and Bionicle?
This just seems like it's here to divide and stoke animosity among different groups. Younger BIONICLE fans will be yet again ticked off that their possible acknowledgement has been snuffed out by older fans, especially when some of the most recent Ideas and Creator sets already cover Pirates, Castle, and Space, AND after their recent fan efforts (the Ideas anniversary set) were snuffed.
Likewise, older fans will see it as entitlement when they've barely been getting anything for their beloved themes too. A set or two every other year with a reference or paying the slightest homage to the thing you really like isn’t the same thing as getting the thing.
This just seems like the wrong way of going about this, when there are better ways to cater to more people and more accurately reflect LEGO’s history.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

"Of course they're gonna choose friggin' Classic Space. As if there wasn't enough sets of it. I'm beggining to be sick of all this stupid nostalgia, for an otherwise unappealing, old theme, and boring, ugly, blocky sets it produced."
I really like 15th century European arms and armour. The reason that it appeals to me so much is that that was the current style of weaponry and personal defence when I was a kid. It’s just nostalgia. You’re absolutely right: there can’t be any other reason for finding something pleasing.
If they really wanted a clear winner, they should have just included that most treasured of themes, Bulk Goats.
Nothing else would've stood a chance.

No, no, this guy's got a point.
@GoldenNinja3000:
They stated that the first vote will be transparent, meaning we'll either be able to monitor the results as they happen, or they will post the results as soon as the polls close. Those votes will determine the top three themes for the final vote. The winning theme will be picked form those three themes, but we won't know the results of the second vote until next year. It's also not really clear, but it sounds like they will select one of the top three, regardless of how the second vote turns out. If that's true, we have no idea how they will determine when to elevate a second or third place finalist to be the winning theme. If the Castle or Space themes end up placing 3-9 in the first vote, they may decide that it makes sense to go with the one Castle or Space theme that made it into the finals, especially if it's narrowly edged out of the top spot in the final vote. Or they may just look at the three finalists and vote amongst themselves which they feel is more deserving, at which point some of these themes stand very little chance of actually being selected as the final winner, unless they get matched up against two themes that are even less favored.
@Eggyslav:
When you get right down to it, any theme that was introduced in the 1900's was pretty clunky, except _maybe_ Model Team (but only because it was scaled up so much). Bionicle wasn't clunky, but only because they used just a tiny handful of System parts mixed in with a bunch of sculpted techno-organic elements, which is the main reason so many people hate it. But look at any of the big Space/Castle/Pirates D2C sets that have come out in the last 10-ish years to see what many people are hoping to see come out of this vote. Big or small, there are a ton of classic elements that are no longer being produced, and a ton of new elements that allow for greater detail, so the chances we'll just get a blocky 80's-style set are pretty low, regardless of what gets picked.
@Lego_King_I:
Well, there's _one_ confirmed Castle set coming out very soon, which is the Ideas Blacksmith Shop.
@GSR_MataNui:
I don't remember 2015 Pirates being a flop, but I had other themes I was more concerned about at the time. Bionicle G2 was a flop in large part because they didn't learn from the waning popularity during Bionicle G1. G1 started out as lightning in a bottle. It was so popular they couldn't keep up with demand. As years went by, they shifted the set designs away from the original G1 look towards the start of CCBS, which performed modestly for the start of Hero Factory but shed customers pretty quickly. They used it for a handful of DC/Marvel characters as well, but those sub-themes lasted one wave before they were abandoned. And then G2 came along and dove headfirst into the CCBS where it broke its neck in shallow water. Star Wars made it a couple waves with CCBS characters, but even the strength of what is arguably their current most popular theme couldn't make people buy those unless they were 100% completists.
And it also didn't help that most of the Bionicle fans had aged out, and weren't interested in buying any sort of reboot sets, no matter what they looked like.
I almost forgot:
I love democracy!
@xboxtravis7992:
I started MaskofDestiny, remember. I wasn't one of the kids who grew up on Bionicle, though. Rather, my LEGO experience dated back to the dawn of the minifig (my brother and I each got a copy of the same set from the Homemaker run, then one unique set with a plank minifig, after which our childhood collection was dominated by Space and Castle sets). There are a lot of items on this list that I would be reasonably happy to see win, but my vote will be for Bionicle, Blacktron (proper Blacktron, not the Super-B Cadet/Decoy Corps that came later), and Forestmen, as the latter two were my favorite sub-themes growing up.
But I hated G2. I started to lose interest in G1 when the color change hit, they tweaked the element color schemes to a more muted palette, and they ditched a lot of the early molds for ones that didn't make sense (the Nuva limb was a hollow shell, which I think I only ever used for my Super Battle Droid), or which shifted the scale of the characters up by about 50%. But there isn't a single thing I like about CCBS. The models always look half-finished because they never fill in the back of the torso. Part of me really wants Bionicle to get picked, but I'd honestly rather see them do something System-based than revive CCBS and just slap some colored shells on a stick-figure.
Anyways, keep in mind that Bionicle only gets one slot to work with. It gives it an advantage in making it to the finals, but there's going to be two System-based themes in there with it. There's no guarantee over which of the three gets picked, ultimately, so there could be themes that are listed simply to keep people from complaining about being excluded. Besides rejecting the Ideas project, there was also a video game timeline that omitted the Mata Nui Online Game in favor of Junkbot, which I doubt was ever ranked as the most popular Flash game on their site. Bionicle could be one of these "red herring" themes, which would need to end up against two others to stand a real chance of being picked.
As for waning popularity of any of the classic themes, keep in mind that the people who grew up on those range from their late 30's to early 50's. It's not like that fanbase is out shopping for caskets, or getting shuffled off to retirement homes. Nobody is aging out, and there are always going to be new fans of those older themes because people can relate to space, castle, and pirates outside of the LEGO experience. You won't see that much with Bionicle. That really is tied to a single generation, with a fanbase that's not likely to recruit new blood to replace those who age out (you're not quite done shedding fans to their Dark Ages), shift interest to other themes, or pass on. The construction was really unique to that theme, which makes it very difficult to just buy other sets and build Bionicle MOCs on your own, so about the only way most people are likely to acquire sets that they aren't actively hunting for is to pick them up randomly in garage sales and other bulk lots.
I agree that there's a loyal fandom who want nothing more than to see G3 happen, but I see a lot of themes that many AFOLs would buy in a commemorative set, even if they weren't in their top 10 from this list. Bionicle really isn't one of them. From my LUG, I doubt more than 10% of our membership would buy this set if Bionicle gets picked, and most of them grew up reading the articles I'd written for MoD. I think the best Bionicle fans can hope to get from this is a Top 3 placement that proves there's still a viable fandom, so that the next time someone gets an Ideas project past the 10k mark, they might take it seriously.
@HOBBES:
You should probably look through the Classic Space "sub-theme" a little more closely. Out of 77 distinct sets that were released during the original Classic Space run (excluding repeat models, value packs, and anything released post-1990), I count 19 that fit the traditional blue/trans-yellow color scheme, 26 that are grey or grey/trans-green, 12 that are white/trans-blue, and 10 more that don't neatly fit within either of those three color schemes (either they blend all three in one model, or the set consists of two vehicles of similar size that fit neatly within two different color schemes). Even within the ones that I consider to fit within the fan-favorite CS color scheme, most of the bases have ancillary vehicles that don't. My brother and I had a lot of CS sets growing up, but I can't identify a single blue/trans-yellow one that looks familiar. Also, your first point becomes very problematic given how many CS sets were ground vehicles, bases, or small flyers that had no wings between them.
@aztecwarrior:
By that logic, space should be the icon of Space, but nobody seems to be asking for them to release a box of it...
Adventurers, Black Knights, and Model Team for me.
Falcons, Forestmen, Wolfpack.
Lego should make an anniversary Serie, let's say 5 sets so every set would be based on one of five themes with most votes.
Forestmen, Classic Space, Blacktron. I’m totally cool with just about any of the other 27 options though.
@Huw
A bonus regarding this poll is that Lego has kindly provided high-res images for all these classic sets to remind us what they looked like.
Are they able to be used to update some of the low-res pics found on brickset?
I voted Spyrius, Space Police and Forest Folk.
This is where I'd vote for the Fabuland entry.
IF I HAD ONE!
Classic space theme is boring.
This post was made by the BIONICLE gang.
Although in all seriousness, I have to say I am surprised that Bionicle theme is included, as it is not as old when compared to other themes. I really wish it would win (and it will be DEFINITELY be on my triple-choice vote), but I'm not giving myself any hopes here. Even if it reached the top 3, people (*cough* *cough* AFOLS) will choose something space/castle related (castle def. better than space though).
However, if Bionicle won (fingers crossed), I really wish they would do a final farewell to the series with a gigantic (but not too much haha) set, with side builds, different characters etc. If not, well, then I hope that at least the winner will be at least slightly interesting.
My favourite picks, apart from the above, are: Xtreme Team, Adventurers, Aquazone, Imperials and Forestmen (and 50/50 on Rock Raiders). Actually when I think of it, these themes are more fun than I initially thought! Off to choose three now...
This was tough. So many of those themes and sub-themes easily could define in a word what LEGO means to me. I'm talking about Blacktron, the Imperial Guards, classic Town, Black Knights, Aquazone, Time Cruisers, BIONICLE... hard to narrow down to three. But I did. I went with Blacktron, Wolfpack, and BIONICLE. I gave Wolfpack an edge over my beloved Black Knights because Wolfpack had only two mainline sets release and could do with having a huge (comparatively speaking) new set tributing it. Besides, I already have most of the Black Knights sets from the 1990s. Blacktron was not only my introduction to LEGO Space, but also my introduction to MOC building since I had a bunch of these black pieces and no instructions (at first) to show me how to build the cool spaceships seen in the catalogs. And BIONICLE exemplified the dream of cool building experiences with storytelling that came at JUST the right time in my life. It kept my love of LEGO alive, many other kids' love of LEGO alive, and it kept LEGO itself alive! There may not be a 90th anniversary to celebrate had BIONICLE not come along.
I empathize with the frustrations of younger members on here noting they are likely to get drowned out by people in their late 30s to early 50s flexing their nostalgia votes for Classic Space and Classic Castle, but we are celebrating LEGO's 90th birthday here. For those who have been around long enough to appreciate LEGO as it has evolved and changed over the decades, perhaps perspective dictates something further back in time should represent the brand. I like the idea floated above that any "Space" set produced actually should a mixture of several Space subthemes, like Ice Planet, Space Police II, and Spyrius all together (just like in the old catalog pictures! My favorite was the Spyrius assault on the Unitron Monorail Transport Base from 1994!) and hopefully LEGO does that. With this being BIONICLE's 20th anniversary year, we can perhaps hope for a tribute of some sort to release in Q3 of 2021, so it might be too much to hope for another set celebrating the theme for LEGO's 90th anniversary.
Regardless, I'm going to try to have the attitude that whatever LEGO makes, it will be great. Very few themes on that list don't give me the warm, cozy feelings of childhood and the sense of being a LEGO MANIAC!!! Well, maybe not Alpha Team, but I doubt that one will rise to the top.
@PurpleDave said:
"Strike a blow against monotony by picking the same themes that get all the nostalgia attention anyways?"
I can't disagree with this, I feel Classic Space, Pirates, and Castle have had plenty of sets and nods since I came out of my dark ages. We had a full run of Pirates and Castle in 2015/2016 that felt very Classic to me at least. We got anniversary GWP's for all three. Benny's Spaceship and Benny's Space Squad are not a full run of Classic Space and simply a movie tie-in but I'll take it. I'm grateful for what we've been given cause it could have been nothing at all.
These classic themes have to be on the list by default even though they have had recent runs because at the end of the day they are the cornerstones of the brand. While Bionicle is significant to the brand and important to its amazing fan base it is not a cornerstone of the company.
"Bionicle may have had a brief revival, but it felt more like Hero Factory 2.0 than the original Bionicle theme."
You sound just like the Classic Space folk who think Benny's spaceship wasn't "Good enough." It scratched the Classic Space itch for me but I understand that this is an unpopular opinion.
"Bionicle fans have been begging for some sort of acknowledgement of how significant a role that theme played in the current state of The LEGO Company, and they are constantly being told that they need to step aside and let someone else have a turn instead."
They acknowledged the significance of the theme when they brought it back in 2015/2016 along side Pirates and Castle and it did poorly. It is unfortunate for those who love Bionicle that it wasn't exactly what they wanted but they tried. Some fans that are overly nostalgic for things seem to bite the hand that feeds because things don't live up to there preconceived desires or because of superficial differences. Same goes for Space/Castle/Pirates.
Bionicle fans will tell you that the theme saved the company, while LEGO historians and Star Wars fans will tell you that Star Wars did just that. It's hard for me to say which side of that argument is right or wrong cause it really doesn't matter to me enough to hunt down hard data or facts from decades gone past. I'll leave that to Gary Istok. They most likely both did great things for the company. I just love LEGO, all of it, and I'm glad they didn't go under in the 90's.
"If you want to make sure this vote goes to a theme that's gotten less love from TLC than Bionicle in the last ten years, you better pick Paradisa, Alpha Team, and Time Cruisers."
I haven't decided yet on what I will pick since it is a tough choice but it just so happens Time Cruisers and Paradisa are on my personal list of considerations, although the thought of Paradisa in Friends pink makes me shutter a tiny bit. ;)
I was born in 1980. M-Tron, Blacktron, and Futuron (omitted) are my jam, but I'm taking off the nostalgia goggles for this one.... Who am I kidding though I will probably vote for at least M-Tron. It's such a tough choice! Argh!
In hindsight I was perhaps a bit hasty when I said Bionicle shouldn't be on the list. I understand the importance of Bionicle, its at the heart of all Constraction sets that followed it, for better or worse. The fact that it's on the list and Classic Technic or Slizers is not definitely says acknowledgement to me. They could have left it out and they did not.
I think I'm in the camp that we should get one set from each of the themes on this list. Now that's an anniversary I can get behind, and one I feel that the brand deserves. Dividing the community and starting a pissing contest is not celebratory in the slightest.
Model Team, Forestmen, and Studios.
Not that I expect any of them to be among the top three....
I’m shocked at how little love there is for Classic Space on this site. I’m not going to lie, I fully expect it to win and couldn’t be happier about it. Yes I would love to see a castle set as well, although I don’t understand how Classic, Lions, and Falcons are separate.
That said I’m more interested in how faithful to the original theme the new set will be. Spaceship, Spaceship, Spaceship was faithful in terms of color scheme and logos (excluding the black bad guys build), but otherwise was nothing like Classic Space in terms of building techniques and part selection. Benny’s Space Squad on the other hand was much truer to the original source, effectively redesigning older sets but with parts that are available today. I much prefer the latter as it is a true Classic Space set, and while it’s size and price allowed me to stock up on minifigures, I would have much preferred a larger set. Of course, it simply rehashed existing sets so didn’t really add to the theme in any way other than a pink minifigure.
This will be like the other fan polls where what gets votes for isn’t what gets picked (Star Wars anniversary set, Brickheadz, etc).
We all know what will win (so does lego), so the set is likely already in production.
Either way I’d vote for some castle stuff, but not classic castle. That was before my time so have no nostalgia for it. Maybe Forestmen since we are getting new Falcons in the blacksmith and got that Lion knight set a few years ago.
1. Arctic
2. Studios
3. Time Cruisers
Kidding, kidding. I still want my Galaxy Explorer. Although I would settle for a Blacktron or M-Tron revival.
Really, Lego should make everybody happy and make them all. Well, except those three above.
I picked trains (with a remote controlled item, like a railway crossing, as a suggestion), Blacktron and Classic Space.
Oh man.....knights...space....I don't know! How can I pick 3? And why only 1 set. :(
So, voted Classic Space, Castle, and Pirates...yeah,yeah I know: "cliché"; but in the 'Comment/Suggestion' section I mentioned:
-An 'updated' Galaxy Explorer (hmmm...should have suggested a Super/Mega Explorer now that I think about it).
-Pirates should be more in the vain of the 'third' version of it several years ago: Soldier's Fort, Treasure Island, and so on...only downside is: the Imperials need a ship...
-And though I didn't vote for 'Town' (as we get 'City' every year), I did suggest a train (which we haven't gotten this year...yet). In retrospect: should have suggested "My Own Train" as a parameter for that (releasing individual cars and engines/locomotives, and buildings).
I voted:
Blacktron
Wolfpack
and without a doubt PARADISO!!!
Trains. I would love a Creator Expert style train station
Imperials. Nostalgia for 6276 Eldorado Fortress
Town. Nostalgia for Shell sets

Castle, Pirates, and Space.
Oh I would love Paradisa but only in the colors of the old sets. I hate friends colors more than the dolls. I need soft pastels and THAT PINK
(I have like 3? small paradisa sets and I love them <3 so calm so soft)
All these themes are so amazing and it is such a shame that only one will be chosen. We all know it will most likely be classic space or classic castle but MAAAN do I hope it will be a late 80's or 90's theme.
I know the chances are small but I really want to see Lego do a reference to Aquazone. That awsome theme just doesn't get enough love anymore.
My choices are:
1. Aquazone (all the way!)
2. Ice Planet
3. Dragon Masters
I really also wanted to vote on: Adventures, Blacktron, Black Knights, Divers and Exploriens, but we have to contain our selfs ;)
1. Pirates
2. ice planet 2002
3. Wolfpack
For me it's a tie between 1 - 2
Looking at polls on German websites, trains appear to be very popular there. I suspect that in the USA, trains would be less popular, and Lego has a large bias towards that part of the world, since there is probably more to earn there.
SPACE!
We all know what is going to win! Except that everyone seems to have a different idea of what that will be. . . .
I am torn between voting for nostalgia - Classic Space, Blacktron, Black Falcons or Forestmen - or some of the themes/subthemes that I missed during my dark ages - Wolf Pack, Dragon Knights, Aquazone or PARADISA (I agree with folks that the original color scheme is essential to Paradisa's appeal).
Bionicle certainly seems to have its fans, and for you folks, I hope that LEGO is listening. It's a treasure to some, and not trash. However, Bionicle (and its lack of System parts) is the one theme on this list that I have zero interest in. I would almost certainly buy a 90th anniversary set based on any other theme on the list, even Time Cruisers, but almost certainly NOT anything related to Bionicle. I guess that would be ok, though, because there are already plenty of other sets to spend our money on!
I've choose:
1. Islanders (sub theme of Pirates)
2. Model Team
3. Paradisa
I'd like so much also Ice planet 2002, Wolfpack and Dragon Knights....but, must choose three only :-(
If Bionicle wins, I hope we get a model like the Ideas submission that captures iconic moments of the Bionicle story (it doesn't even have to be construction), and not just a remake of an old set. The Great Spirit Robot would be cool, too.
I voted Classic Space, Classic Castle, and Blacktron, seeing how we got a great Classic Pirates set last year. Go space!
@stank2k:
Bionicle went through a much more extreme change during it's G1 run than System has going all the way back to the dawn of the minifig. It's not just that they look different, but the scale changed, and CCBS is barely compatible with the original Toa parts. G1 started out as a Technic sub-theme, and used Technic axles, pins, and gears in pretty much every set. The Rahi had more in common with the Technic Competition sub-theme more than they did with the original Toa. By the time G2 started, the Technic branding had long ago been abandoned, Technic parts had almost entirely been purged, and the parts had basically been reduced to CCBS frames and CCBS shells.
We've seen one person comment here on why BSSS doesn't qualify as "Classic Space", but by that same definition there are pretty much only three out of over 70 Classic Space sets that actually do qualify: 497/928, 487/924, and 918. People who make that claim are basically locked in to the look of a single set as the epitome of Classic Space, and ignore the vast majority of other CS sets.
I went to NYTF from 2002-2004. It was Bionicle, hands down, that saved the company. Not only was it an in-house theme, but it was the top seller at that time. Star Wars was second, and Harry Potter was 4 after something really basic like Creator. Bionicle sold so well in 2001 that they had to install a new production line so they didn't have to cut production of other themes to increase production of Bionicle parts. There have been LEGO employees who have credited Bionicle with being the one theme that mattered most. The only problem is that anyone who is not a fan is usually a hater, and many of them simply can't admit that a "non-LEGO" theme saved the company over the stuff they were buying at the time.
Things change, though. These days Bionicle can't get a free handout, while Star Wars is absolutely the powerhouse theme of the day, and Harry Potter is enjoying a revival that's probably doing better than the original run did this far in, just based on how quickly the quantity of sets dropped off after the first two years. But in terms of "LEGO historians", it's worth pointing out that Gary Istok really specializes in pre-minifig history, and hasn't paid as much attention to things that fell outside of his core interest. When asked what the rarest production element was, he immediately dug back into the early days of the company, unaware that they'd recently produced a single solid platinum mask for a Bionicle contest.
The other thing to remember is how Bionicle fit (or rather, didn't) within the LEGO product line. When Star Wars sets were released, they sold to LEGO fans and Star Wars fans. The former had been collecting LEGO sets all their lives, and jumped on a new theme that interested them. The latter were not LEGO customers at all, and only showed up because of the license. Bionicle had very little appeal to established customers, so nearly the entire customer base were new buyers. Unlike SW, it didn't really cannibalize sales from other themes, but simply added to them, which is another reason Bionicle had more of an impact than any other theme in the survival of the company (and why it was Bionicle and not Star Wars that forced them to start up a new production line).
Now, the irony is that Bionicle did many of the things that they were trying to shut down in other themes. They burned through as many new elements in their first year as Star Wars did in its first three, and Bionicle tended to run a lot of new molds for a single set or wave of sets before discarding them forever. The difference is they sold enough volume to make those parts profitable. And the further irony is that, by the end, CCBS used a largely static parts palette, but CCBS Bionicle got cut short because it didn't sell well.
@alfred_the_buttler:
There's a lot of love for CS here. But there are also people who maybe like CS (or maybe don't), but feel that CS has hogged the spotlight, and see it as a threat to their chances of seeing their own favorite theme get some throwback support.
@Sethro3:
Absolutely not. They stated quite clearly that the results of the first vote will be published, and the winning theme will be picked from the top three finishers. They have no control over how we vote, so jumping the gun on designing a set could leave them flat-footed if their preferred theme didn't make the cut. They also don't plan to release this set for at least another year, which leaves tons of time to work on a set design. My guess, based on the theory that the second vote is purely informational, is that as soon as they get the top three themes locked in, several designers will start working on sets tied to those themes, and they'll pick the set that they like best, regardless of which position that theme took in the top three.
@brick_r:
They already did a Galaxy Commander set decades ago. It gets no love because it doesn't fit the fan definition of a Classic Space set. Rather, it looks like a Futuron set with CS crew. But my brother got that one year for Christmas, and in my eyes, that's the Classic Space flagship.
I like the return of any classic theme, but honestly this feels like a weird move. Giving people that much choice to make only one set will result in many disappointments. That's inevitable. Now that the Lego Group owns Bricklink, they could look at statistics to know the most wanted classic set and release a surprise set that no one saw coming. They could even do this once per year. I'm excited about this nonetheless.
Bionicle, Ice Planet, and M-Tron for me, though I'd put Spyrius at a very close 4th and the various Castle stuff consolidated for 5th.

Why would bionicle win, it's a failed theme?
Bionicle // Ice Planet // Adventurers
Surprised no UFO or Insectoids, probably would have picked the latter especially as my space pick.
Black Falcons, Forestmen, Ice Planet

Probably. I can’t imagine any comment has ever received more than 300 likes before.
Maybe at the end of the year Huw can rank the most liked comments of 2021 :~P
To be honest, they would all be excellent choices. With the exception of Bionicle that is. Its certainly not a classic theme, and would make a really bad 90th anniversary set.
I hope not, but looking at the votes so far it looks like it will make the top three easily.
At least it won't be the anniversary set, there is a reason the last round isn't transparent after all: so that the vote isn't binding and Lego can rightly choose the best fit
The one thing that always baffles me is the love for Bionicle of all things.
I mean, so it happened during my dark ages, and I never watch or watched the shows to any LEGO theme (I made the big mistake recently to watch two episodes of City Adventures though). So the lore is lost on me and I purely judge any theme by the sets it yielded. And sorry to say, most Bionicle sets to me look the same except for different colours. But what really put me off this theme is the use of almost only special pieces, which from the ones I bought on Bricklink also appear to be of sub par quality. More rubbery and much cheaper looking than normal LEGO pieces. So, if one doesn't know the lore and is not interested in the backstory, what else is there that makes Bionicle so popular? That's an honest question, not trying to offend or belittle anyone's opinion.

There is nothing stopping the Lego company from making or re-creating any mould for any piece. They choose not to.
I chose Aquazone (underwater vehicles ahoy!), Bionicle (grew up with it, Slizers and Robo Riders) and Alpha Team (cool creature designs).
Having said that, a new set of Rock Raiders would be interesting to see (teal-coloured parts, drills and a variety of rock monsters, anyone?), alongside M-Tron (glowing parts for the win!).
In any case, may the most beloved series among everyone be chosen!
Aside from the above, LEGO can, and should, release a set each year that honours each of the themes above, as that way everyone gets what they want instead of feeling left out :D
I'm really okay with any of these themes winning. Except for Bionicle. I hate Bionicle
My votes are for Ice Planet, Aquanauts, and Forestmen.
But I had a thought. If they are truly "reimagining" a theme I think they could actually bring justice to a theme that had so much wasted potential. In which case I would vote for Time Cruisers.

So the theme that TLG called out as the number 1 best selling theme in their annual reports from 2001 to 2005, and still a top selling theme for several years after that, is a failed theme?
I don't have any Bionicle sets myself, but calling it a failed theme? Really?
Lots of ignorance in this thread.

Blacktron, Trains, Technic Arctic!
@AustinPowers:
The advantage has waned a bit in recent years, but certainly 20 years ago Bionicle whipped the pants off System in terms of making organic shapes.
Adventurers (orient expedition), lion knights and Bionicle.
I didnt expect it to be such a controversial choice but I'd be pretty happy if bionicle won. It was a pretty significant theme for lego but doesnt get referenced as often within modern sets as the more "classic" themes. Personally I think a lego system interpretation of a bionicle figure, similar to that mech in the upcoming Marvel Eternals line 76155, would be awesome (though that's just wishful thinking on my part).
I have a soft spot for classic space though I'm not convinced a 90th anniversary set could really offer anything that Benny's Spaceship from the Lego movie didnt do perfectly already.
disappointed my favourites; UFO and Insectoids weren't included :)
I'd love a mashup of Space, Castle and Pirates
@alyxavior:
So...Nexo Knights 2.0...which I would TOTALLY be down for (seriously, if they made the first one that they eventually wound up in space; or very least; their moon...plus: the monsters could have started to look more alien...something like evil Mixles I'd say...)...figure out a way to combine Chima...just 'spitballin'...:)
@PurpleDave:
Hmmm...that ship was one a friend of mine had...we 'reconfigured' it...no 'Commander' is not my 'flagship', this:
(on the left, as if you could figure that out:))

or this:
http://www.davidglennsimmons.com/archive/MyLegoCreations/Super%20Galaxy%20Explorer.htm
are close to what I'd like. Take that first ship (WAWHOZA, that's a lotta' bricks...), combine with the second one's ability to 'split' into two ships, throw in a 'rover', some skimmers/speeders, maybe a third ship/craft (scout/fighter), and maybe a secondary build into a base (a sci-fi equivalence to 'Pirates of Barracuda Bay'...): Shut up, and take my money...:D...oh, and maybe a new 'lunar plate'...
I think I should also note: As much as I'd love to see a new 'Classic' Space set, I think deep down I'd more like to see some 'Neo-Classic' Space sets...I keep lookin at Rob Damiano's "Nova Team" stuff, and keep thinking 'why is TLG NOT being inspired by this'...his ships, crafts, vehicles, and so on...his suit designs later...I mean, the Exo-Suit was his (via Ideas) wasn't it...
I like how everyone is saying "Classic Space will win" and then points out they voted for anything BUT Classic Space! :-)
I, however, DID vote for Classic Space. Its what I grew up playing with!
@brick_r:
Oof. That first link...I know there's a sub-culture of Classic Space fans that prefer to make everyone look like pasty corpses with the fleshie heads, but if you're not aware of that, and you can't see the heads very well in the bridge shot, and you can't see the front of the torsos on the crew either to see that they _all_ are wearing uniforms of some sort, it looks a bit awkward that the two minifigs in yellow appear to be female.
However, that's cheating. MOCs can be flagships of your personal fleet, but not of the official product line. If it's not the Galaxy Commander (which seems to get it based on name alone), I'd argue that it's only because GC got downgraded in favor of a much more recent spaceship that beats it on size three times over, except people can't seem to agree that it's actual Classic Space because it doesn't fit their microscopically narrow ideas of what CS actually is.
The Exo-Suit project was submitted by Peter Reid, and developed into an official set by Mark Stafford. And the reason they don't do sets like that as a wider range is that they just haven't sold as well as similar licensed themes. Certainly now that Star Wars is one of their biggest sellers, it would significantly undercut any sales they could generate with an in-house Space theme, which is something I think they've been able to document pretty well with the sales data from Life on Mars, Mars Mission, Space Police III, Alien Conquest, and Galaxy Squad.
Honestly I would enjoy anything but bionicle.

So Thundercats :D
So we have Bionicle, Classic Space and Pirates as the top 3 from the first round.
There will be another vote from 3rd February but TLG reserve the right to pick for themselves which one of those themes they would make!
If it's going to be a single set worthy of the 90th anniversary then it ought to be a £100+ set to do the theme justice. For that price and size:
- Bionicle would be likely to include a monster or two as well as any smaller figures. To have models similar to those featured in 8558 Gahdok & Cahdok (636 pcs and RRP £50 at the time) would make it more attractive to Technic fans because there would be more versatile pieces for Technic as well as some bespoke pieces. However, would Bionicle fans be happy with that? I'm sure there is a spectrum between those who like just the posable figures, those who would buy every set with the logo on the box to be "complete" and those who also like Technic and are happy to build crossover MOCs.
- Classic Space could do 928/497 but we've had something similar, albeit modernised, with 70816 Benny's Spaceship. Whilst it was handy to have those pieces, and it had its own merits, it wasn't quite 928 and those pieces weren't the best for building a Command Centre either. I would favour a set more like 6970, which could build a command centre with small monorail and small ship, or be rebuilt into a larger ship, (see the back of the box):
https://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/stevebd/space/6970/6970_box_back.jpg
but ideally with an enclosed cabin. Rebuildability is very important and if it can do both the command centre and a good ship then that would suit more fans; multiple sets to build a layout would be possible. Something similar to the original crater shapes can be built on a flat plate using curved slopes and cheeses.
Then you have a choice of monorail to add to that, as it would not be in the set:
- either rare 1990s parts supported by 3rd-party parts; or
- a rail made from basic parts (mostly 1x2 plate, 2x2 plate & 2x2 tiles for curves) that could do all the functions of the original and would never be obsolete, with trains using the latest train motor (longer and faster!), compatible with PF and PU.
I'd prefer the original blue/grey/trans-yellow colour scheme (albeit with bley), with the focus on exploring rather than shooting competitors. A good range of uniform colours too, ideally complementing Benny's Space Squad so including Red, Black and Green. After all the years since the original sets, we still don't have a real Command Centre on the Moon so that is still an aspiration that the theme could pick up on. I did submit an idea (now expired) but I doubt we'd get a set like this:
https://ideas.lego.com/projects/6c9e0f37-b196-4be6-ab3f-42edd52b7cc3
- Pirates have just had a really good set in Barracuda Bay 21322, which builds both a pirate ship and an island base. This is the same principle as I'd like for Classic Space. I'd have bought more of those original sets if I had had enough pocket money at the time, and it's nice to revisit the theme as an AFOL.
