LEGO Ideas review results
Posted by Huw,
The result of the LEGO Ideas second 2020 review has just been announced!
Find out which, if any, of the 35 projects that were considered have passed review and will be made into an official set after the break...
Vincent van Gogh: The Starry Night
The Ideas team writes "Congratulations to Truman Cheng (aka legotruman) as his Vincent van Gogh: The Starry Night recreation has been selected as one of the next LEGO Ideas sets. Truman's fan concept of one of the most famous paintings and painters illustrates a whole new way to think about LEGO art, which is truly remarkable.
"If you'd like to learn more about Truman then make sure to check out his 10K Club Interview."
I can't say I'm particularly surprised: most of the other projects are too similar to previous Ideas sets or those in other product lines.
The whole point of Ideas is, of course, to encourage us to suggest ideas that LEGO can convert into products that will attract new customers. Given that LEGO is currently specifically targeting adults looking for relaxation, mindfulness and activities to de-stress, as its recent cringeworthy press releases constantly remind us, it's not surprising that something that might appeal to such a demographic was chosen.
Personally, I like it: it's different and original and not based on yet another TV show. However, I anticipate that I might be in the minority among us here.
Let us know what you think of the result in the comments.

I didn't expect that, but I think it could make a lovely set in retrospect.
Shame about Discworld and Community, but this is cool.
Expected that, and I'm glad to see it! Will be a beautiful display piece for a LEGO room, and appeal to a lot of non-Lego fans too. I'm just a bit surprised though that no other sets got through!
EDIT: Nevermind, Sonic got through! That's great for Sonic fans.
At of 35 projects, they picked only 1. It is good one, but I'm surprised it is the only one.
I just hope they don’t turn it into a mosaic.
Realistically, a pretty safe but fair choice that I think will sell well.
Good news for those Sonic fans too.
YES!!! i'm looking forward to buying starry night, it was my favorite of the bunch.
kudos to everyone else. 2022 now just needs to get here quickly.
Feels like kind of an anticlimax, but I am glad this one made it as it's a clever and creative use of LEGO. I think I would probably buy it, especially if it could be wall mounted. Being fairly flat it wouldn't take up too much space? (Which is my most limiting factor at the moment for buying more sets.)
I really do like it, also.
I think this falls into the same vein as the Bouquet or Bonsai Tree; you can build it and display it. And when people see it they have to do a double-take to see if it's really LEGO. Something you can display in your home or office and it's not immediately recognizable as LEGO.
Shame Avatar didn't get through
Excellent, this was the one I really wanted to see - something different, which is what Ideas should be about.
Woot woot! Starry Night!
Only One again,
I mean it is nice but we had last year the third 2019 review we had 3/12 were approved and now you have 1/35 approved.
Yeah as something legitimately new for the Ideas line, that further demonstrates the art potential of Lego, was kind of rooting for this one
Such a great choice, but it’s a little disappointing that 34 sets got rejected. At least Lego Sonic is coming, which is extremely exiting.
Wait what?
Out of THIRTY FIVE ideas, they just picked ONE?!?!?!?!?
It's a cool project tho, I can't wait to see the final result.
Great! 2 hobbies combined!!!
Poor Trabi! I thought that calendar is almost certain... However, I look forward to see how the Starry Night will be redesigned. It can be a really nice display piece!
I really liked Starry Night so I'm glad to see it get through. Now to see whether I like the actual set as much since there have been a couple of Ideas sets recently that edited out the thing I liked about them in the final product.
So many great Ideas in this round and they pick... this`?
Couldn't be more disappointed.
My ideal reaction to a LEGO Ideas review is 'huh, they went for that? Interesting.' and both the Van Gogh and the Sonic set fulfil that criteria. I probably won't pick either up, but they're more interesting than the Seinfeld or Home Alone sets.
I’m sure it’ll be good as a set (congrats to the designer!), but I’m honestly getting kinda tired of this.
I get there’s likely a lot of research and such that goes into these decisions, but it honestly is starting to feel like a waist of good projects.
Still, I’m holding out for that Sonic one! That minifigure will cost you an arm now, so hopefully new sets will make it easier for people to get ahold of.
This is cool but I was kind of hoping for that temple of hermit set... I guess there's been a lot of Asiatic sets recently so that must be why it wasn't chosen.
I’m super stoked. I think this is a creative and attractive set. And was easily the most original of the lot.
Personally I dislike how much Ideas has basically attracted so many “HERE’S SOME NICHE PROPERTY I LOVE THAT I WANT TO SEE IN LEGO FORM.” So I am always in favor of non-licensed projects getting the greenlight.
Love it. Will definitely grab this.
It certainly has the potential to be superb.
Shame about Discworld though.
Well. One of the few ideas that I supported has been approved. I guess that I'm obligated to buy a copy now. :-)
I bit sad. There where some cool ideas in between. I mean I don't care about TV shows or pirate sets much. But I like a good car set. Oh well, congratulations
I'm starting to lose faith in LEGO really caring about what we want as sets. I mean the fact that the Medieval Blacksmith went out of stock right away doesn't mean "yah let's ignore mountain windmills and markets now because we just made a medieval set." it means "Holy crap! People want medieval sets again? Who woulda guessed! Maybe we should make more!" -_- Overall I'm very disappointed.

Honest question: is there some Van Gogh foundation they have to license this from?
I really didn’t like any of the sets that got through in this wave at all. I still have to get Sesame Street and the Winnie the Pooh set will get my money as well.
Please don't let Sonic be another Mario.
Please don't let Sonic be another Mario.
Please don't let Sonic be another Mario.
Please don't let Sonic be another Mario....
Definitely not the worst out of all the options, I'm interested to see the final model
Did really not see this one coming, because in my humble opinion the target market for this is really, really really small: since this is a pure display piece (like LEGO Art sets), an (adult) art aficionado who happens to like Van Gogh, this particular painting and LEGO seems like the primary target group, and well, how many of those come to mind?
For the rest of us who don't particularly appreciate fine art, this could be interesting as a parts pack and maybe for some building techniques, although based on the pictures it mostly seems to be stacks of plates.
While this comment is certainly coloured by my personal lack of interest in the chosen submission, I think it is also fair to say that there were quite a few of the other submissions with a much broader appeal and that it is a shame LEGO decided to only approve one out of 35 this time round.
Finally, congrats to Viv for getting Sonic through - I'm looking forward to that one!
My favourite one won!!! So excited to buy one in the near future!
At leas Sonic got through, great news
I’m surprised there wasn’t another from this batch to get approved, but if it had to be one, I’m happy with their choice. Barring some major changes, I’m definitely going to purchase it.
As is always the case, most of these are good MOC's but not great Lego sets. This one is really the best choice given what Lego is aiming for and what types of sets they want to make.
I'm very surprised they decided to go with this! Comparisons will inevitably be drawn between the Lego version and the MOC already available through, uh... "other" brick manufacturers.
Starry Night is one of my favorite paintings, so I'm delighted that this will be an official LEGO set!
I'm always excited for more high-quality pirate (and medieval) sets, though, so I am bummed that none of those passed.
As of when I'm posting this, this article has 38 Likes, and 41 comments.
I haven't read them yet, but I have a sinking feeling that a lot of them aren't positive lol
EDIT: Color me surprised, most of them are positive! Thanks for pleasantly surprising me, guys! :-)
I have to agree that everything else was just too similar to something else. I’m not a big art fan but I think this set could look great on display. Like other I hope they keep the brush stroke look and don’t turn it into a generic mosaic.

My thoughts exactly! I'm totally stoked by these results. Maybe people will start to submit fewer multi-thousand-piece projects and we can get more solid, reasonable designs! I probably won't be picking up this or Sonic, but these are good picks.
Well, Lego just saved me a bunch of money! There were a number of items in that review that I was excited about and none of them were selected.

If that's the case, then surely it would make more sense for Lego to be producing those, rather than waiting for them to come through the Ideas pipeline?
Also, the vast, vast, vast amount of whining that people have done over the comparison between the original Blacksmith submission and the final product serves as complete evidence that Lego should *not* be pulling those projects, and instead just do them in-house and skip all of the needless disappointment
The Chinese clones have already copied this and made it into a set some time ago, so they thought it was a good idea too!
Very nice - I’ll gladly take it... if the execution and price are up to scratch
I really thought they wouldn't make the Starry Night because it may conflict with the Art theme. Where's my PIXAR sets?
Good selection, I’ll buy this, great display piece of a beautiful painting. Bummed Community didn’t make it as I’m a huge fan but nevermind.
Also, I’ve lost track. How many sets are yet to be released?
Winnie the Pooh
Seinfeld
Home Alone
Globe
Is that it?

Typewriter?
Only one? So why did all those other builders even bother to design such wonderful and impressive (and bigger) sets? It really feels harsh Lego said no to all of them.
Better quit this whole ideas program. Right?
There were definitely a couple more sets I would have liked to see passed, but I think Starry Night was the only 'must pass' set in this group for me, so I'm very glad LEGO felt the same way!

It looks like the painting’s image is public domain in Van Gogh’s home country and most other countries as well. Van Gogh, being a historical figure, is also likely exempt from any licensing restrictions so I do hope they include a minifig.
This was one of my favorites, so I am happy with that.
Happy about Sonic as well.
Quality over quantity I guess. A step in the right direction. LEGO is throwing out far too many sets already anyway.

No, not right. There are many nice mocs here, but not many really innovative, fresh, and new ideas.
You beauty. Shame we didn't get the clipper as well, but with so many still in development, I am not surprised !!
Will deffo get this when it comes out, and Winnie The Pooh can do one !!
It's not for me but I like it, it's different, bucks the recent trend for TV IP-based models and follows a similar philosophy that has produced the recently introduced Art and Botanicals adult-focussed themes.
They chose a good idea, but passing on Community is streets behind.

The video lists seven: Seinfeld, Fender, Globe, Home Alone, Typewriter, Pooh, Sonic.
As for Van Gogh, I’m happy about that. The co-host noted that this was something they’d “never seen in Lego before”, and that’s a good focus for Lego to have. (I really wish they’d approved the little aquarium as well, because that was something a bit different too.)
As a Dutchman, I like this pick. As a Lego fan, I also do! So hopefully it will turn out just as nice as the original submission (with a more defined frame), and I'll definitely buy it.
Sunflowers and Potato Eater options would be nice as well.
Bummed about Fall Guys, but I'm happy with this! Looks like a great complement to LEGO Art.
I can't wait for this one, something really different
Congrats to Truman Cheng- as for the other designs, I have a suspicion that the competition will produce some of them if Lego won't. You don't have to cut off your ear to spite your face.

Can't believe the Seasons Calendar didn't make it. Is there a way to get the instructions directly from the IDEAS site, or from the creator?
As much as I was hoping for Brickwest Studios, Caribbean Clipper, or Southwest Airlines Boeing 737, I understood that they were unlikely to pass review, so I'm content with this result. It's a good fit with their new Art strategic direction, new and unusual as a Lego build, and a good build in its own right.
wow, unexpected curve ball, but a very original idea. well done
YES!!
I am not surprised about this selection. It is a really clever one and fascinating to look at.
I think this will make a nice set, and it’s much better than what we have gotten from the Art line so far. I was hoping that one of the two Pixar sets would be selected as well, but I can’t complain.
It’s sad to see that 34 sets got rejected, but at least the unlicensed ones will have a shot at becoming Bricklink sets if that program continues.
MEH
I like the choice that's been made. i don't think I will buy it but I like the proposition and the choice.
I was so hyped at the beginning with pop culture references made into sets as it was new and something Lego hadn't really done (at least not one shot, there were the SW, LOTR, etc. lines). Now I'm quite tired of yet another licenced building/room that's not really interesting in terms of display/play or Lego building even but just reproduces a place with lots of minifigs from the show. Meh.
Don't get me wrong I loved Community for example, laughed my ass off (well until Troy character left) but do I want it as a plain room set? Not really no. Hell I mean I even feel (but I may be wrong) that if it's something I'd want it's something i could do myself. If I think about a Community set I'd rather have a paintball set or a clever build recreating the alternatives of the famous scene were Troy enters the room with pizzas. Something more creative/clever in the end.
Also picking Starry Night seems logical in their art/adult not AFOL new sets and the bonsai would have perfectly fit in it too if it hadn't been a planned set already.
I was kind of expecting the calendar set to be selected too as it seems like it could have totally fit in this strategy too, in terms of product and size. And it could have been a long run commercial opportunity by releasing seasonal scenes for Halloween, Easter, etc.
I hope this turns out like Minecraft and starts a long-lasting line of recreations of classic artworks... Surely a couple of van de Velde (both elder and younger) works would assuage the disappointment of pirates fans hoping for an Imperials set!
Very good choice! Was also my favourite among all the submissions. Hope LEGO will not change the painting all together to make it simpler.

Also, 'bigger' is absolutely a drawback of a project, not a plus. The reaction to the Blacksmith shows how people react to big projects that get taken down to a reasonable size
While there isn't that much here I wanted it's still a shame they only picked one set out of 35. Real shame.
I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of the ‘1 out of 35’ results from Ideas in the future. I don’t know how I feel about the prospect of raising the vote number, but this is what happens now when you ‘only’ need 10k. We see a lot of ideas reaching that number and not many of them can be turned into sets. I’m happy with this result but I would’ve liked to see Ratatouille.
Interesting. Congrats to the winner...certainly a lot of other worthy sets.
On a side note, was at local drug store, and they had "Starry Night" as part of this brand, Pix Brix, that used interlocking plastic blocks
https://pix-brix.com/products/starry-night-kit
I was expecting Community and or Avatar but Van Gogh is also cool. Hope they don't downgrade it.
I mean, they're not going to make a modular building out of a Lego Ideas set, they've already shown that much, and things like Discworld and Schitts Creek are way too niche to make money on a global scale
This is actually the one set I wanted the most from all the entries. It’s an amazing creation and lies in line with the current adult oriented turn LEGO has taken for a fair amount of their sets.
However it feels really weird that only one set got selected out of the 35. I’m very sorry for everyone who was rooting for other projects to win. The ones I’m most sad about are the avatar and pixar entries.

I think the vote count is not most relevant as to whether or not a set should be produced. One submission that manages to get the whole of its fan base voting, may easily get a large number of votes, whereas something that gets less attention may be a better choice for a set. Presumably getting to the 10k threshold is more of an indication for TLG that enough people are interested.
Voting is just one casual click.

They should bring back the other questions that they used to ask when you supported something. Not only would the extra steps make it a tiny bit more of a real vote, since it's not just one click, but you also have those things of "How many would you buy, how much would you pay for it" to help people realize that they aren't just clicking a like button. This is for things that will be made into products. It seems like a lot of voters and submitters have lost sight of that and are just supporting anything that looks like a neat build
Fantastic! The only one I really liked!

It was painted in the 1880s and Van Gogh died in 1890, so it should be out of copyright. That said, the original is owned by a museum in New York and I don't know if they have devised some legal contrivance to maintain IP rights over it. As for the minifigure, I can't see how anyone could successfully assert IP rights to the expression of Van Gogh in that form except LEGO itself.
As an aside, here's some music to listen to and loop while assembling your LEGO Starry Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxHnRfhDmrk
I think it's appalling to have 35 projects that have made it to 10,000 supporters and only choose 1. I'd not want to submit with those odds.
I really don't understand the backlash to Starry Night. It's nothing like an Art mosaic and it's an incredibly detailed display piece like the best Ideas sets. These submissions are all fantastic designs and I'm not trying to put down the designers, but I don't want LEGO Ideas to release more modular buildings and Creator Expert cars. I also don't need an endless supply of TV show/NASA sets and one-off buildings, even though I love sets like the Ocean House. Starry Night is a unique style of build that we haven't seen in LEGO before and I can't wait to see the final set.
Man, was hoping for that BMW, but I think Starry Night will make a super cool set
Starry Night deserves it for originality.
But there were so many other great projects that I had wished would be chosen....
Haven’t bought an Ideas set since the ISS but very tempted with this.

I also think that having those questions would give them a better understanding of the demand and maybe even profitability of a submission and as such are worthwhile.
But I frankly don't see a problem with people just supporting "anything that looks like a neat build", even if they don't intend to purchase it for whatever reason. For me LEGO and the platform is about choice, so the more (varied) stuff to chose from the better.
The fact we had so many more submissions over the 10k mark since Covid started last year to me is more of an indication that there are more people enjoying LEGO and that awareness of the Ideas platform has grown as a consequence - not that it is "too easy" to vote for a submission.
I appreciated the post (https://ideas.lego.com/blogs/a4ae09b6-0d4c-4307-9da8-3ee9f3d368d6/post/add7c117-a3cb-463d-b255-fc27d470f855) the team made regarding the growing number of submissions because it shows they are aware, but I wish their conclusion would have been "ok so lets experiment and turn 4 or 5 submissions into sets and see if the trend holds and they sell" rather than choosing just one out of 35 - provided that there was more than one suitable model, which I think is the case.
At least we can hope that some of the submissions will find their way to Bricklink, as @haldir has pointed out. I see a huge potential for a mix of the two programs, where people can vote with their wallet (by "pre-ordering") for a model they want to see realized; and this only goes up exponentially if the model get's the full LEGO treatment, with a box, branding and proper set number - though the "improvement by a pro designer" might be somewhat controversial, so ideally they would offer this as a choice like "would like to see original submission as-is vs. would like to have it reworked ala Ideas".
I'm not surprised this was chosen, though I am surprised they only chose 1 out of 35. I'm interested to see if they keep the 3d element to make it different from the art theme and I'm honestly surprised that they haven't explored doing paintings such as this through the art theme yet. Maybe there's an issue concerning the licensing for such, as they kept it to Disney and Harry Potter.
as to whether I'll buy, lego has to give me time recoup from the expensive four months its been so far before I come to decision on that.
One of the reasons for Lego ideas is to obtain market research as to what fans what. So by only choosing 1 there are lots of missed opportunities by TLG to have quite a variety of different and original set types for each audience, from a 'city' night in the museum, a new 'creator' goldmine roller-coaster, a 'collectors' Discworld, a Christmas 'seasons in time', to a wacky 'fall guys' for the kids. Maybe I'm biased but most of the 35 appeal to me more than the repetitiveness of current official sets.
Not something I'd actually go out and buy, but it looks interesting, and at least it's not another sitcom set.
Dang it, I wanted Ratatouille
What a mediocre choice, no offense to the creator but who the hell is interested in this? :|
Very disappointed that the Naruto set wasn't picked given that the fan base is global, I understand why. Whilst having Ninjago, Lego would be able to have next to zero obstacles in making this. However, because Ninjago is already a long standing series in their portfolio ok guessing a Naruto set would be too much.
But having a manga/anime set would be a big deal and would a Lego first.
I fear that this would put a lot of people off forwarding their ideas to Lego Ideas given the slim chance of making it through. A lot of talented makers sell their MOCs on Rebrickable and, although they don't see their set available in a official capacity, the amount they earn through people buying their instructions probably makes worthwhile. I hope Naruto gets another chance or becomes available to buy through instructions.
"Given that LEGO is currently specifically targeting adults... as its recent cringeworthy press releases constantly remind us"
Yeah, stupid Lego. How embarrassing for them attempting (and succeeding) to reach out to a new demographic. The sooner they stop pushing Adult Lego/Themes I don't like and start catering to my specific interests (accurate replicas of trains) the better.

I don't feel it's appalling at all. As with most Ideas submissions, many are good MOC's and look fantastic, but make very poor sets. Not without significant changes at least. Lego has standards and rules for sets that they follow, whether we like that or not. Because of this, many of these sets are either too complex, too many pieces, poor structure, etc. It's not really about the odds, it's about what does and doesn't make a viable set that should be mass produced.
They can increase the number of submissions to 100 that make the vote if they want, or change the number of necessary votes to 1,000, but that will never change the fact that the projects have to be viable sets. Many of these simply are not. People lose sight of this.
As an 80’s kid now AFOL I would have liked any of the pirate or castle inspired sets or the rollercoaster. But then Lego knows that by now and the ideas platform isn’t really the place to revive old themes (thanks for the pirate bay, though).
But Van Gogh is exactly that...a new idea. Will I buy it. Most likely not. But that doesn’t put into doubt the ideas project. It just confirms it. Enough people liked it to get it this far. So I wish them happy building and I'll just buy and build one of the many other great current sets :)
Very convenient that Minifigs don't have ears; it will make Mr. van Gogh look very realistic!

Why is everyone saying "who would even be interested in this" as if Starry Night didn't get the same number of required votes as every other project in the running? Obviously 10,000 people like it enough for it to become an official set!

I agree, this is the type of thing Ideas is really meant for. Ideas ends up having a lot of licensed and pop-culture submission on there. While those are often neat, it's things like this art piece that bring out the best in Lego.
So much work, so much dedication, so much effort so that of 35 good projects you only choose to carry out one? It seems pathetic to me, it seems to me to have a very rude company with so many people who have dedicated many hours of hard work thinking, buying parts to finally make the whole.
I would be curious to know if the people who submit modular type buildings think they have a chance of it being made into a set or if they are happy just to get to 10k and have the kudos and recognition with no expectation of it getting approved. I say modulars in particular because while they are permitted it seems that the consensus is that they will never be chosen.
It might also be true of quite a lot of the realistic vehicle submissions, although those have been done in the past (the Caterham for example).
This was one of the sets that I hoped would be passed, as it looks incredible and is one of my many favourite paintings.
I do think that the final model will be significantly different in its construction, as i simply do not see Lego releasing a set with that many 1x X plates stacked on top of each other! I don't think it would be a very interesting build experience for one thing, though I may well be wrong!
Looking forward to seeing what is finally released, but they *must* keep the brilliant 3D aspect of the set.
(I was rooting for The Discworld, Portal 2 and Roller Coaster sets as well!)

Did Lego ask them to design things and submit them? If they went to each one of these 35 people and said "Make a build that we can consider" and then shut down 34 of them, THAT would be rude. But anyone can throw anything on Ideas. No one is asked to do it. There's nothing rude at all here

I will refer you to one of my above comments, but just because there are a lot of submissions does not mean they would make good sets. It's not rude at all, nor is it an insult to any submission. This Ideas program isn't about who can make the biggest, most detailed and labored set. It's about an idea for a set that would make a good set.
BIG REQUEST: could you please not spoil the surprise and just let the video speak for itself. I always want to find out in the video and not from a post like this one.
One of those who thought that at least two ideas passed this crowded selection. Only one instead, and not one of my favourites: I hoped in the season calendar and the HeroQuest sets (ok, the last one is licensed, but it would be a certain purchase for me).

Wow van Gogh must be making a lot in royalties!

Then why click on the post?
Not surprised and I'm sure it will do well but I do, in general, have a problem with taking master works of art and pasting them on to other things. Lego has so many options to do other original things that appropriating fine art and 'pixelating' it into a building experience may as well be putting it on neckties and refrigerator magnets.

"Very disappointed that the Naruto set wasn't picked given that the fan base is global, I understand why.
There's an interesting comment on the Ideas blog from the submitter of the Naruto project (I think) which essentially said that TLG couldn't get the licencing exclusivity they wanted so the project couldn't happen.
We really never know why projects get rejected, apart from the obvious ones (like the TX Master games one in the next review that baffled us all) so there might have been ones that LEGO would have made if the licence situation had been workable.
Not at all surprised this was picked. I AM surprised they only picked one.
So happy that this one got picked. It was at the top of my list because of the 3D interpretation of a 2D piece of art. I like that it is not base on some other IP. I hope they keep that 3D aspect, it would be a huge disappointment to see them turn it into another mosaic since that extra dimension is really what made this stand out.
If the set is as intricate as the fan model, I see this one as a great display piece. However, I do hope that it remains three dimensional rather than being converted into a mosaic-like two dimensional format.
Excellent choice - I'm looking forward to this one!
Only ones I was really interested in were the Windmill and Avatar sets. I appreciate Lego trying to do unique stuff but I'm starting to feel like they only pick the weirdest options for each review.
Oh. My. God. This won?! Only this?! Screw it.. so many good sets, ideas, MOCs.. they were playable, had great scenes but they pic a buildable image? It is one of the least exciting sets.. what a shame.
Lets hope for the next review round, gratz to legotruman, tho.
Honestly, not what I expected but I am satisfied after knowing how badly Van Gogh was treated.
I'm very surprised that they only selected one idea. The one they chose is novel and creative, but it doesn't really interest me. I am glad to see that a lot of other people seem to like it though.
I really can't understand why they picked this one, seeing the rest of candidates. I'm not into art/display sets, so I'll pass on this one.
It's a shame, there were many awesome sets in that selection.

"Lego just made the next year significantly easier on my wallet. I thought for sure they would pick an Imperial set at the very least. My sister will be pleased though. She loves this painting!"
Don't think we're there yet: the year has just started :-D
This idea is what Art should've been
This is a truly excellent choice. For anyone who has seen the painting in real life, it is immediately apparent how brilliantly this build captures the painter's style and texture. Translating it into Lego in such a way is also pure art itself. I would have been disappointed if Lego does not select it.
This batch had so many great projects like the Far West setting, Hocus Pocus cottage, wooden coaster, Oriental temple or the Up house... The selected model sure looks interesting and creative, but I cannot help myself wondering "Why only one...?!"
Very surprising this gets made before Yellow or anything else by Nathan Sawaya (btw he made a Starry Night as well only in mosaic). Unless it will be a 3in1 (option for multiple paintings to recreate), I probably won't buy it. Too bad about all the other submissions that were dismissed, there were more than several I'd rather buy.
The neatest thing about this set IMO is how well it captures the unique style of a Van Gogh painting, both the thick long brushstrokes and the buildup of paint into a very 3-D surface. One of the things that always surprises me when I see a painting "in the paint" after becoming very familiar with its flat image is how much the interplay between light and surface affects the experience of viewing it. This set captures that sensation very well!
I must be the exception as to me that was one of the worst choices mining coaster, seasons in time, hocus pocus.....etc etc all much preferred,
At least I'll save some money ??
Brickwest Studios combined Western and Studios into one set... both themes that have long been neglected and underrepresented. I guess we'll never see anything remotely close to either again.
I like it, and particularly hope they keep the 3D aspect, but I’m not exactly sure if I will buy it.
I won't buy this set but I'm glad it exists.
It's an interesting use of Lego and should make a visually distinct set.
Bruh.
Nothing against art but it's an easy pass lol
I gotta say the opposite of a lot of commenters here, I wouldn't have pegged this specific one as making it through, but for most of the rest, I'm not at all surprised.
Like @monkyby87 said, good MOCs, but for the most part not good sets.
Between the styles of some of the builds, size, encroaching on existing lines and themes, and limited appeal (fandoms have a way of thinking themselves larger, more important, and more widespread than they are), I wouldn't have been surprised if this had been another round with nothing selected.
Something that Lego should consider is publishing instructions for the sets that weren't chosen, in case people really like them. There's no reason they can't.

That's up to the submitters. They aren't prevented from giving instructions away, and it wouldn't really make sense for Lego to make them since they aren't approved. Plenty of submissions have had illegal connections and almost every single digital entry has had parts that never existed in their respective colors. So there are pretty good reasons that Lego can't, but nothing is stopping the individuals
Disappointed, but that seems to be par for the course for most IDEAS results at this point. I honestly don't understand why they only picked 1 project out of 35. Surely at least one more project would've been viable?

"I really don't understand the backlash to Starry Night. "
I agree, this is the type of thing Ideas is really meant for. Ideas ends up having a lot of licensed and pop-culture submission on there. While those are often neat, it's things like this art piece that bring out the best in Lego. "
I don't see it as that different. Instead of being a set based on a pop culture TV show conceived by someone else, it is a set based on a pop culture painting conceived by someone else. "
This painting is at least far more iconic and has stood the test of time.
I have to admit that sometimes Lego fans narrow mindedness surprise me. They like only repetitive or licensed themes.
Not that surprising, they've been pushing "art" and everything else was too similar/licensed/modular.

But I frankly don't see a problem with people just supporting "anything that looks like a neat build", even if they don't intend to purchase it for whatever reason. For me LEGO and the platform is about choice, so the more (varied) stuff to chose from the better. "
The problem is that we get to this point and people complain, "oh my goodness there were so many entries and they only picked one!" even though most of the entries wouldn't have been good as sets. Everyone needs to be more realistic on the front end and then we wouldn't be where we are
Also, the existence of the platform is based on what people intend to purchase
First I want to congratulate the winner of this round.
I thought this was a beautiful & well done project but it's just not something I would want to purchase in Lego form as much as I love the actual painting.
I was just coming out of my last Dark Age when the Lego Ideas Theme was in it's early stages. I passed on a few sets I would have liked to own at the time they were available as I felt many of them were quite expensive. I also haven't been impressed at all with the sitcom based sets. I like some pieces in the Friends set but not a fan of the show at all so unless I get the set for a great % off deal my money will be spent elsewhere. The fact that many of the submissions are so limited in general appeal or based on IP's that require licensing approval makes it hard for many of these sets to be approved to be mass produced. Over the past several years there have been some sets I wanted & some that just aren't for me like everything else Lego makes. I'm currently in a position where I can buy whatever sets I want. I think I'm currently safe for at least the next year from purchasing any currently approved Ideas sets as not one of the upcoming ones appeal to me. There were only a handful of sets this round or the previous one that I really liked and sadly none of them made the cut. At least I have the next wave of Harry Potter & some of the Creator sets to look forward to.
So glad !!! Finally an “idea” made it through. Fresh, entertaining, gorgeous, innovative. This is what ideas is all about !!! The others - although beautiful
- are simple mocs... except maybe the bonsai, lovely but with bad timing and fallout very ugly imho (tastes are tastes) ! I guess this round confirms that Lego could possibly stop accepting modular building mocs as ideas, it’s quite obvious they have in-house capable designers who can build the same if they wanted ??! Anyways, Starry Night day 1 purchase for me !
This was super predictable. Starry Night is great and should be made. They weren't going to make ATLA after Spongebob didnt make it through... and ofc sonic would pull through when they rolled it over and the stars aligned license wise
Love it! Should be the start of a set line for AFOLs...
It's a gorgeous looking project and I'm looking forward to the official set!
A great choice, it's truly original. And that's the very idea of Ideas. This round shows that Lego values quality over quantity. 35 entries is a lot, but too many of them just are too heavily inspired by existing sets.
Almost none of the candidate sets were realistic or viable options, so this one seems the most fitting for what Ideas is supposed to be about. not my cup of tea, but I get it
From my initial predictions in September:
https://brickset.com/article/53694/record-breaking-number-of-projects-qualify-for-review-at-lego-ideas
"This is an incredible interpretation, but I have a feeling they won't go for it because it's mostly tall and flat. Not much play value for the kids here."
Oops. I'm glad they picked it though. As I said, it's incredible!
Most of the 35 I had written off...but I said that Seagull Bay had a chance (before I had seen Pirates of Barracuda Bay), the banzai tree had potential (before I saw all the plants they're going to release), and Doggos (which I'm actually surprised didn't get picked). I really didn't think anything else on that list had a chance for reasons explained in that thread.
Ah, yes. Don't pick the amazing windmill, or the wild west saloon. They could have gone with Appa, or the Clipper, but no. Lets choose the most boring, most similar to the mosaics of the 35.
Complaining aside, it looks decent, but in my opinion they should have still gone with the Imperial Fortress/Seagull bay or the wild west roller coaster.
I get why the modulars did not get picked, or the doggos, considering we got the brickheadz, but still kind of disappointing.
I hope they won't turn it into that boring Lego Art thing. I have always maintained, that Lego pictures should not be 2D like Lego art, but 2.5D (if you want to call it like that), in that there are pieces sticking out and emphasizing some parts of the Geometry. It fits the medium of Lego much better, than simple 1x1 plates or tiles stuck on a plate, because there are much more complex shapes to be achieved in much more creative and intriguing ways. Therefore making the picture actually interesting instead of standard boring pixel art.
Seems pointless to have initially accepted so many sets sets into the process, to then reject 97% of them after they got the 10,000 votes to move to the next phase.

I disagree in that they've stated that IP's weren't acceptable yet they continue to let many be voted on and approve some. So some IP's can be submitted but some can't when it should be none. To me if it's Disney, Marvel, DC, TV based, Comic Based, Movie Based etc. then it's IP & shouldn't be admissible so things like Sesame Street, Steamboat Willie & Sonic never should have passed the approval process. Allowing those & Home Alone makes more people submit awesome ideas like Ratatouille, Night at the Museum, Wallace & Grommit, Addams Family, Avatar et al. Likewise if they are never going to approve anything modular they should outright ban any and all modular modular submissions. The Disney thing is totally bizarre because there is obviously demand but Disney most likely won't approve anything outside of their official licensing agreement with for some strange reason the exceptions of Winnie the Pooh & Steamboat Willie.
I was hoping for The Exploratorium (seems to me we never had something like that - and its huge!) but Starry night was also amongst the ones I found interesting. As always, I'll wait to see the final product before deciding if its worth getting it.
I'm losing faith in Lego Ideas! So many great ideas and they pick another single static model!
I won't be buying this.
Ratatouille got 10,000 votes for a second time. It clearly has a market and yet not a word as to why it failed again! and yes I would have loved the Exploratorium as well.
Although I don't buy rip-off Lego copies it seems that so many of these ideas end up being copied because there is obviously a market for them which Lego seems to be ignoring more and more. If they don't watch out they are going to start losing more market share.
Personally I was hoping for Sheriff's Safe or Seasons In Time: Calendar, but I'm okay with this pick.
I know someone who this would be a perfect gift for.
Lego may be more than just a toy, but to me other ideas were more entertaining. I fail to see the fun in this set.
There were a lot of great builds and they picked such a stupid thing!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Bright side and all, I guess, but I've wanted an Imperial Flagship equivalent for the Imperial Soldiers forever, so I was hoping for perhaps a combination of the two Imperial fortresses with the Caribbean Clipper as well. Something to rival the Pirates of Buccaneer Bay but be sufficiently different (hard stone walls, no shipwreck, order not chaos). Fingers crossed that something like that will release still in the future.
now watch how the wave of brickbuilt painting submissions hits lego ideas

What about Ideas, that while based on a license, could bring in a larger target audience? I don't think many AFOLs would complain if a Lord of the Rings project was chosen given our collective thirst for Castle.

At least 10,000 people, like the rest of the sets.
Don't get me wrong, I think there are some real missed opportunities in what they've rejected. Some that may well sell a lot better than the Van Gogh (and I'm not even including any of the sets that would have to go through licensing).
But there is a market for this, and it may open some possibilities to place it in art museum gift shops and reach an audience that maybe wouldn't normally look at Lego.
A HeroQuest boardgame in LEGO would have been marvelous. Imagine the new orcs, dwarfs and wizard figures that could have been made? Might have been a little wake up call towards LoTR. Really a shame. :(
I love this idea

The problem with that though is it becomes a slippery slope. What makes a building modular? Some people may design a set that could fit with modulars, but isn't meant to be necessarily. So it becomes harder to explicitly ban such submissions. So instead, when it comes to the review stages, they simply don't get approved. Outright banning stuff from being submitted, unless it's explicitly offensive, might create more problems than it's worth.

I agree, I don't think they can ban them but they could make a statement that is upfront about the likelihood of them being approved which would possibly result in fewer people getting their hopes up. Something like "we love seeing your creative modular style buildings but it is very unlikely we would be able to approve any of them. We're happy to keep them on the platform and allow you to vote to let the creators know how much you like them but other types of submission are more likely to be successful".
Maybee it could be made from briks we allready have, no need to purcase a set. Only common bricks but for sure TLG will include a common brick in new color.
I personally prefer Monet, but I am still thrilled about this as I hope it will be the first of several sets based on famous paintings!
I don't really think they should actually ban the modular submissions because there have definitely been quite a few that I would buy if they got approved through the Ideas platform. I have a much bigger issue with how they determine when something IP based is acceptable & when it isn't. To me as I stated earlier if it's something based on a movie, tv show, comic, video game, etc., then it's definitely IP regardless of who owns the rights and they seem to turn a blind eye to allow a lot of what gets submitted based off of IP's in general. Even when it's something niche it is still IP.
While I was expecting a few Idea submissions to get approved aside from Starry Night, such as Portal 2, Windmill, Discworld and so on, I respect their decision to choose only one set. I do hope that the Portal 2 Idea set instructions will be made available by the set's creator someday :)
'Twas my favorite among them, I am very pleased.
