Review: 40479 Dalmatians
Posted by Huw,Pets were a surprise introduction to the BrickHeadz theme during January, and it seems that LEGO has more in store for us this year.
40479 Dalmatians, released on June 1st, is the second one to feature dogs. It contains BrickHeadz numbers 131 and 132, so there are six numbers (133-138) unaccounted for, which to me suggests that we'll see three more Pets later in the year.
As with the others in the series, the set comes with an adult and a young animal. These are unmistakably dalmatians thanks to the printed spotty pieces, of which there are three different types: three 1x2 bricks, four 2x2 curved slopes, and 22 1x1 tiles.
The design of the bodies is much the same as those in 40440 German Shepherd, but the heads differ significantly, as you'll see below.
All the pets sets come with a 'bed' in which to display the animals, which incorporate the standard 6x6 BrickHeadz stand should you wish to display them to match the non-animal sets.
The small cut-out at the back is there to accommodate their tails.
It's certainly possible that we'll see more dogs released in the series but probably not your favourite breed. However, using the design of these or the German Shepherds as a starting point you should be able to come up with your own variations. Here, for example, is my attempt at Samoyeds, which just happens to be what CapnRex101 owns :-).
The real doggy, for comparison...
Here, then, are all my doggyz...
Verdict
This is a delightful addition to the BrickHeadz pets range and one that dalmatian owners in particular will enjoy.
I believe it'll be available from LEGO.com on June 1st, in Europe/ROW, at least, priced at $14.99 / £13.49 / 14.99€.
Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All expressed opinions are my own.

Cute! I feel like these kinda came outta nowhere tho.
This better not awaken anything in me....
I am not a true fan of BrickHeadz, but these appear to me to be some of the best of the bunch. Despite whether or not I fancy a particular theme, it is always encouraging when the sets are well done--and, in this case, adorable!
And again we learn about the new set from the review...
We don't have a dog, but those Dalmatians are really cute.
Cute. But I'm still waiting for Chocolate Labs!
Who’s buying 50 and 1/2 of these sets?

Just be glad they didn't slap the Disney license on this one? ;-)
The Brickheadz are getting harder and harder to resist. They are getting cuter and cuter!
I want to know how CapnRex101 doesn’t get Samoyed fur all over his Lego for his photo reviews!
Such a lovely majestic pup, that one.

Is that such a bad thing?
Too cute, day 1 purchase! Thanks for the quick review, such a surprise as this isn't even showing up on the sets listing. I love the Samoyed version you made and the picture with all three doggyz, actually all 6. Maybe LEGO will come out with a Brickheadz Go Brick My Pet kit.

Oh my gosh YES!!! I want that soooo badly! One for cats, one for dogs, one for fish and one for birds or something like that. Please hear our prayers LEGO, we crave for personalized pets sets!
For real though, people should actually send this idea to LEGO. It’s such an amazing concept and I really expect it to perform quite well.
That's a beautiful cloud you have there, Captain.

I was actually surprised that they didn't include some sort of "101"-related easter egg! Easy to MOC one in.
Nice Samoyeds, @Huw, but they need more fluff!
Apropos of nothing, these comments are such a breath of fresh air after reading the comments on the latest Star Wars article. Or the latest article about a GWP or promotion gone sideways. Happy Friday!
Soooooooo cute!

We once had a Dalmatian, he died of old age. We rest a tear when we remember him, my mother gifted him to my dad and man were they close.

OK you're right. But you could at least add photos to the database in advance (I know you already did it). Besides, some (not me) don't like surprises :-)
Anyone up for a 101 Dalmatians MOC? :P

We aren't allowed to. We are given a date and time when we are permitted to publish any information about the sets we receive for review which is derived from the review copies. If images turn up elsewhere we can publish them, of course.

I'd have said they were already practically a reference! The adult has plain black ears, red collar and goldish tag; the puppy also has a red collar but no tag, a plain black ear (or two) and a patch over one eye... to me they look as close to Disney's designs of Pongo and Patch as possible while still maintaining plausible deniability xD
Would just need a slightly bigger muzzle for the adult, the tag to be round instead of starred, and the puppy to get his patch switched sides and one ear changed to white and they'll match the animated movie Dalmatians ^^ Or otherwise, for the puppy to just get the patch removed altogether to be Lucky instead of Patch, depending on personal character preference...
--this is not counting the specifics of their spot patterns, of course. But even Disney's official merchandise rarely goes to the trouble of getting *those* exactly right!
@Huw, FYI: this set is not currently in the Pets category, I only see the first four sets here: https://brickset.com/sets/year-2021/theme-BrickHeadz/subtheme-Pets.
If only these were brickheadz 101 and 102.

Right?
@ThatBionicleGuy - There you go! Done and done!
Love the Samoyed MOC, that may be biased because I own a Samoyed too.
I believe the LEGO 40349 Valentine's Puppy is the first Brickheadz dog.
40479 Dalmatians is a lot.
Brickheadz in 2021 is surprisingly great!!!
Just out of curiosity, what breed of dog or cat would be the hardest to replicate as a breed in brickheadz? Personally I think Great Danes would be difficult due to their proportions and the amount of color and pattern variations.
does anyone know if the 1st brickheadz pet dog set is really sold out?..I have been told yes and no so have no idea,it has been marked as sold out for some time now on the lego site, the cats came out at the same time and have been marked just out of stock, I did ask customer service and was told that the item was 2 new to be sold out and was maybe marked wrong as sold out, that was in Feb. and it is still marked as sold out,I was planning on getting all of the brickheadz pets, however I will buy none of them if I can not get them all, I have become burned out on the stress of items being sold out very soon after they come out and will not pay a higher price for these or any other item just shortly after they came out..anyone have any idea about that set?
3 more sets of pets, huh? Like another cat, another fish, and another bird? :)
If they made a cocker spaniel brickheadz I would be able to die a happy person. My life would be complete.
Haven't bought any pets yet but they are so hard to resist!!!

Yes I know, but when I was reading the review, the set in the database didn't even have a name ...

We can't do everything instantaneously and we do have lives away from Brickset, remember. I was out at 2pm, having scheduled the review article earlier in the week.
Great job MOCing the Brickheadz Samoyeds--but the group photo only confirms my feeling that the first set of dogs has pugs, not German Shepherds (or Alsatians)! The Dalmatians work much better IMO--probably because of those printed spotted bricks.
I like the brickheadz line, but I can see why people did not like them at first. the pet lines show how diverse the line can become. i have all of the pets that are out now and will be picking this up first chance.
