LEGO Builder’s Journey now available on PC and Nintendo Switch

Posted by ,

We don't usually mention LEGO games nowadays, but this one looks to be more interesting than the usual offerings. It's been available for Apple devices for some time, but as of today it's released on more platforms:

LEGO Builder’s Journey: Join a father-and-son duo on a journey through an expansive LEGO universe

The LEGO Group is taking players on an epic, inspirational experience in LEGO Builder’s Journey, available now on Nintendo Switch and PC. The game follows a father and son on a heartwarming journey through a stunning brick-built universe, filled with geometric puzzles that will surprise and delight players.

“When creating LEGO Builder’s Journey, we were inspired by the new movement of games that focus on the overall experience for gamers,” said Karsten Lund, creative director and head of studio, Light Brick Studio. “We chose to focus on the emotional and evocative aspects of storytelling to spark players’ imaginations, and to encourage them to reflect on the importance of play and creativity in all of our lives.”

In addition to the playful themes sewn seamlessly throughout the narrative, the Light Brick team has designed a world featuring graphical upgrades to further immerse players in the game, including ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, reflections, shadows, and other effects that make bricks feel more tactile and movement more fluid.

LEGO Builder’s Journey is available now for $19.99 on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Nintendo eShop. To learn more, please visit htttps://www.lightbrick.com/builders-journey.

On PC with ray tracing the game looks darn near photo-realistic (granted it has obviously dramatic lighting and stuff that real life doesn't).

By in Poland,

I have it on my wishlist. I'm anxious to see what Ray Tracing has to offer in this title.

By in Germany,

It looks stunning and the gameplay is exactly my kind of thing - meditative puzzle solving with nice graphics and music. It seriously makes me consider getting a new tablet/ smartphone so I can actually play it... :)

This is exactly the sort of direction Lego games need to be heading in. Shame it isn't on PlayStation, though does it rely on pointer/touch control?

Looks like Monument Valley, but Lego. Very cool.

My son showed me this last night on his Nintendo Switch. Perfect timing!

I played it on my iPhone via Apple Arcade and it was a very interesting game, with good concepts and animation but it was very short. For $19.99 I’d be expecting at least 5 hours gameplay but I don’t think I even got one. From the pictures, it doesn’t look like it’s been updated with more levels either

Wait, what’s this about not usually mentioning LEGO games nowadays? Why not?

This is Brick*set* not Brick*game*.

The very matte finish to most blocks in the render/screencap with the chocolate brown background looks not good. The rest, quite cool. Can’t wait for some reviews, will be neat to see what exactly we have here.

My 4-year-old really enjoyed it on the Apple Arcade version - he played it over and over. Takes about 20 minutes to play all the way through, once you know what you've solved it once. Really nice while it lasts, though.

Okay, that sounds reasonable. I just figured the site covered LEGO stuff generally, including corporate news, park openings, the LEGO Masters show, etc., so the games made sense with all that. I’m glad you have at least some coverage of them.

Hi Huw, I was wondering if there could be an article pertaining to references and Easter eggs scattered throughout some sets? That would be really neat to see, and maybe along the lines of articles like the “What makes a Minifigure?”

Sry this comment isn’t about the new game lol :P

To be fair, we seem to be past the stage when new Lego games were coming out a couple times every year, with the same gameplay but a different license. As was pointed out, Brickset does cover magazine releases and Lego Masters.

I guess the real answer is that we cover what we want to :)

By in Sweden,

Without necessarily reviewing them, it could be nice to see the video game announcements or release dates, just like for this one. Because this was a neat, short article that actually got me interested in something Lego!

Game is stunning, relaxing a playful (played some 15 levels give or take). Really something for players of all ages as LEGO should be.
But controls... probably could not be worse to put it mildly. Major source of frustration, let's hope they will fix it eventually.

Oh that’s excellent news! I always wanted to play this game, and now that it’s on Switch I definitely will.

By in Canada,

From some of the comments I was somewhat interested but than reading others it doesn't really seem worth it since it's very short and once you've solved it that's it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It'd be cool if those builds in the pics at the end got turned into real sets!

Looks like the classic Lego gonk droid in the D of the logo.

And that also means you don't cover what you don't want to, which I am totally cool with :D

I mean, there are videogame websites out there. Pick one.

And thanks for that. Plenty of sites out there that cover games already, no need for Brickset to get into this as well.
As for this particular game, it looks quite nice, but not something I would consider buying as I guess I would use it once or twice and then lose interest versus building actual sets.

By in Poland,

I was so close to getting it, but apparently it's very short and don't even look soo pretty on switch? so maybe if there will be some 70% off or more I might get it, but for 80PLN? I want at least 5-8h of gameplay (I would want more, but not everything can be dragon quest builders 2 where I lost hundreds of hours X"D)

A LEGO game that isn't just about smashing everything in sight? Who'd have thought?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it looks brilliant, I'd never heard of it before. The only problem is that I'm torn between my love of portability and my love of ray tracing.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

The issue is that 20€ seems a really steep price for the length, and I also bought first-party Nintendo games at full price (60€).

Gravatar
By in United States,

l wish this was on the PS consoles as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks fun. I’ll pick it up on Switch when it goes on sale

Yeah, it's a shame the Switch version looks pretty much like a straight port of the Apple Arcade version. The system can handle more advanced graphics, but having played through most of the game already on Switch, I can say that the graphics are still very nice and perfectly satisfying for the gameplay experience.

By in United States,

I agree that the price is a bit steep for the length of the game, but it's in line with Nintendo's pricing. They're pushing decades-old Lucasarts games for the same price, so...

I wonder if there'll be any lore references in this, like Classic Space Robots, Kanohi Forges, or Serpentine tombs. That'd be awesome!
