LEGO Design by ME and pick-a-brick palette updated with Atlantis parts

Posted by ,

I'm not really a fan of doing LEGO stuff on computer (I spend too much time on my PC running this site!) which is why I don't report much on video games, Universe or Digital Designer. However mgbutler emailed today to say he received an email from LEGO stating that the parts palette has been updated recently, which is always an exciting event for LDD/DesignByMe users. It reads: "Now you can add something special to your Atlantis model collection. LEGO Design byME has just updated the brick palette with 50 newly discovered, limited edition, deep sea bricks. Will you search for the truth or protect the ancient secrets?"

I've just downloaded the latest version of LDD and there are indeed some cool new parts, including the Atlantis canopies. However when I designed a model featuring one it said it wasn't available, so I guess we need to wait a bit longer before we can buy them...

I haven't looked at LDD for a while, but just in the past few days I noticed that several new parts were in the US's online Pick-a-Brick. There were no photos of the pieces, but they appeared to be new minifig parts and other regular pieces from the piece descriptions.

Has the thread been updated already?

I am mgbutler!
When I was on UK Pick A Brick I saw that there are several new minifigure parts. I didn't have time to look for any others but I will do later.

Hmm, I never trusted LDD my father came by one day and urged me not to download it for my son. He says it'll just bring virus's. I told my son that LEGO stopped making LDD! Lets hope he doesn't go snooping around on LEGO.com.

although I use LDD frequently, and am working on a model of the neptune carriers cockpit (as seen in the atlantis movie), I havn't downloaded the new version yet, as I am unsure if all of the previous models that I made will be "safe" (in other words, they won't dissapear when I upgrade). can someone confirm this for me?

I think we can all be very certain that LDD does not contain any viruses, trojans, spyware or any other malware. If it did it would get detected very quickly & would be commercial suicide for LEGO. I have LDD installed on a very secure PC, behind multiple firewalls, and they haven't reported any issues. Ian.

well, the update is kinda dissapointing, cuz there are no atlantis helmets, or torso, or legs. but i guess its better then no update.
eddy- i think it is safe as i updated and my models are still there.

I want to second as well that LDD has no viruses. I've used it on 2 PC's and a Mac and they still run the same way they always did.

The only ailments it inflicts are addiction and disappointment when you find out they might not have that one piece, and frustration when you discover the sale price of your uploaded creation. XD

I agree - Lego definitely wouldn't put viruses and the like in its software. I've never had any problems. If anybody has had problems, the virus/threat was most likely put in by a hacker or other outsider.

Yah, this is rly great!

The only problems with this new Lego Digital Desginer (LDD) is some parts are with the wrong colors. For example, set 8402's (Sports Car) minfigure body has everything right except this: the suit print is white! It still has it's markings, but the background is white! Has any-one else noticed this, or am is it my computer? It happens to 2 parts, (both new shirts) and 1 minfigure head is warped and distorted, plus the new castle helmet won't work! Who else has these problems?

By in United Kingdom,

my LDD doesn't work on my PC!!?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Murdoch17 - I noticed that about the suit too. And if on the knight's helmet you mean it won't attach to a minifig, I've had the same problem.

Noticed a weird LEGOShop button... Argh, what's Sainsbury's doing there?!? The Entertainer?!? WHAT'S HAPPENING?!? Huw, stick to the old LEGOShop ad buttons... it's getting annoying... Argh, Brickset never had any ads apart from the LEGOShop button... now, there's Argos, The Entertainer, etc.! WHAT'S HAPPENING?!?!?!?!?

Another thing: The "latest comment posted..." is now more detailed! It now gives the latest comment to the minute!

@Anyone concerned that LDD has viruses: Don't worry, it's virus-free! Got scanned by McAfee, scanned by Microsoft Security Essentials... no problems! ;)

By in Germany,

Oh waiiit... they all link to the LEGO pages... now I understand!

By in United Kingdom,

@Alemas, and everyone else who's interested: I'm not selling out and I'm not planning on putting horrible big unrelated ads or Google AdSense lists anywhere and cluttering up the site. I hate them and I'm sure you all do too.

However, there are loads of online retailers who stock LEGO, not just LEGO.com, and it would be doing you and I a disservice if I didn't bring them to your attention, and make better use of the prime real-estate on the home page where the ads sit.

Not everyone likes buying from LEGOshop.com because of the shipping costs and sites like Play.com don't charge for shipping and have a good selection at keen prices, so are a better choice for some.

The Rapid Online supplier is a new one on me which I stumbled upon by accident but which stocks Dacta educational products which you can't buy directly from LEGO, so I'm sure people will find this useful.

They should all lead directly to the LEGO section of the site which will save you hunting around.

They are only displayed to people in the UK: I will probably do something similar for the US in due course if they are a success, and if they aren't, I will remove them.

And remember, everything that's purchased, not just LEGO, as a result of clicking through from here results in a small commission which keeps Brickset running and free for everyone to use. It may only be pence, but it all adds up.

I'll be adding TRU and Tesco soon...

Oh, and @Alemas, well spotted on the last comment age: I thought that might help regular visitors see when articles have new comments since they last looked.

Unfortunately the time on the front end server appears to be 7 minutes different to that on the back end database server which results in a 'latest message posted 7 minutes ago' instead of 'latest message posted 1 minute ago' due to the way the difference is calculated. Don't suppose it matters too much...

@Huw: "I'm not planning on putting horrible big unrelated ads or Google AdSense lists anywhere and cluttering up the site". Well said. I hate all those ads. Luckily, Brickset is one of the "cleanest" sites around!

Huw: Honestly, anything you need to do to keep this site profitable and worth your time is OK by me, and I'd wager that a good portion of readers feel the same. Thanks again for all that you do. :)

By in Ireland,

Back on topic, first thing I noticed after 'upgrading' LDD is that 'Technic Wedge Belt Wheel' (4185) and its tire are now missing from the palette. :-(

By in Greece,

Couple of things.

Firstly, regarding the ads, I try to check out pretty much the same selection of sites on a frequent basis anyway to see if there are special offers, so now I can just link through from Brickset. Not seen ads from Amazon (who are probably the most consistently competitively priced Lego sellers in the UK) or TRU yet, and it might be worth adding these if Huw can strike a deal.....

Secondly, regarding LDD there's some interesting news over at Eurobricks regarding user access to something called Lego Universe mode on LDD. This apparently opens up a much larger palette, which is obviously a potential boon to folks who use LDD to design their own models without necessarily intending to actually order the parts from LEGO. The downside is presumably that if you DO decide to order the parts for your masterpiece, some of them just won't be available in your chosen colour. Check it out at :

By in United Kingdom,

The links to Amazon are on the individual set detail pages and search results. I didn't see much in putting up a banner to Amazon as well but having just checked I see they do have a half-decent LEGO landing page, so I'll perhaps do it later.

Thanks for posting about the Eurobricks post. And you're right - over 1400 bricks to have fun with.

arrgh! i cant get the lego universe mode! can some one help me?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have the Lego Universe mode... and it's awesome!!!! The new parts pallet includes some suprises.... including the Price of Persia arch, the Pom Poms from the Collectable minfigs, along with the orignal castle chest aromer piece replaced in the 90's! The parts list is very long! King Kahuka's mask, the faces of the colectible minifigs (no bodies) plus the orginal dementor's leg, BIONICLE parts (not many), a anchor, SPORTS basket ball launcher, the lsit goes on! The Indiana Jones hat, the original girl's hair from the '70s, and a new "Garrison Cap" (does this mean Army LEGOs? ) I think this covers most parts.... wait! I found more! Skull twins head and hat, Qui-Gon-Jinn hair, Bat Lord's hat, Persian turban, ninja hat, Egyption hat, wolfs hat, shark hat. Ok, I'm done. ==Murdoch17==

By in United States,

The new Lego Universe mode is AWESOME! :) I wonder why they call it "LEGO Universe". It doesn't have anything to do with the MMOG. I wish they had more face prints and torso prints. There are hardly ANY!! A cool thing they DO have is the zombie face from the collectible minifigs.
I think it is WAY better than the old LDD.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

@cjg: It's called Universe Mode because it was originally developed for internal Lego Group LU designers only. And what do you mean with more face prints, I hope you did see that there are over 80 of them.

Anyway, to you and everyone else - please join the discussion over at Eurobricks in the LU Mode thread. Hope to see you there...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@superkalle: I do see 82 of them, I was mainly talking about the torso prints. There's only about 30 of those, of which most are pretty much useless.
