The LEGO Group has added yet another cult vehicle to its portfolio of cars, with the reveal of the latest version of the ubiquitous LEGO Volkswagen T2 Camper Van, complete with pop-top roof with tent and ready for summer road trip adventures.
The new LEGO Volkswagen T2 Camper Van is based on its namesake of the late 1960s and 1970s and succeeds the much-loved previous LEGO Creator Expert Volkswagen T1 Camper Van, adding many new features in the process. The new set is larger than before and distinguished by a new paint colour, a sliding door, as well as the trademark T2 wraparound Baywindow front windscreen and a new yet instantly recognisable ‘face.’
Under the hood, the set also features working steering. The LEGO Volkswagen T2 Camper Van’s detailed camping interior is also fully equipped for the open road, with opening cabinets, fridge, sink and a gas stove with a teapot. Days at the beach are suitably catered for, as the set comes with a set of folding chairs and of course a surfboard, while a folding rear bench seat provides a comfortable place to stay under starry skies.
Volkswagen Campers are of course synonymous with customisation, and the LEGO Volkswagen T2 Camper Van set is fully prepared for personalisation, with a sticker set including retro decals and a choice of German or US number plates.
LEGO Designer Sven Franic commented: “The Volkswagen Camper is a rare breed of vehicle that commands affection like few others, and we know the LEGO version will bring a lot of fun to people who’ve been lucky enough to have or go camping in one, or always wanted one.
“Though the Volkswagen Camper is no stranger to our LEGO cars collection, this latest iteration brings even more delights for LEGO builders. The meticulously kitted out interior is sure to charm seasoned campers and adventurers alike, while the eye-catching exterior with pop-up roof is a feat of engineering just like the original.”
Do you consider this a worthy successor to 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van? Let us know in the comments.
Additional images are available on the set details page.

I think the front looks odd, but the shaping is definitely better on the new set.
Looks great, might be a day 1 purchase!

I dont like the £ D:
That’s a total disappointment. Not a patch on the old one and I’m trying to work out whether it is even recognisable as a Volkswagen.
That is just my first impression. I’m a bit taken a back as it looks a real backward step. The building techniques may be better but it should at least be recognisable. That front end is awful. Worse than the Aston Martin on first look. You can’t just stick a spare wheel on the front and call it a Volkswagen
As many VW vans as city set helicopters
wonder if they'll do T3 - T6 eventually
A friend gave me their bags-still-sealed 10220 that I plan to build, take apart, and part out.
I'm a little concerned building it is going to make me want to get this, and not for parting out. But all that medium azure...
If it's anything like the T1, get used to seeing this one about - we're in for the long haul I reckon! :P
Apparently it's a bit flimsy when you actually come to build the thing. A pity, as the interior detail is excellent.
It looks great, but there’s a good few cars I’d rather have before a 2nd VW camper van….
The first one looked way better.

Perhaps you're thinking of a different vehicle. This is instantly recognizable to me of a "bus" my cousin had.
First impression is that it looks all wrong...
Looking at the picture with the sliding door open - it seems like there is a gazillion of shades of medium azure. Not my cup of tea but looks like a fun build. Maybe I'll look at the instructions to see if there are any good building techniques.
The roof just above the windscreen seems incredibly odd.
Glad to see steering is now standard on Creator Expert vehicles. All three this year have it: the Porsche, the Pickup Truck, and now the VW van.

There's a VW logo sticker on the spare hubcap...exactly as the production version.
Love it
Seen promo pics on another site and the pics with real vehicle in pic, highlight the difference on the front especially around the wind screen, needs to be more curvy wrap around, Lego really need to make more varying screens as to many vehicles don't look as good as could with out.
I think the T1 looks more like the real deal than T2.
I'm intrigued by the sliding door.
I also wonder how it compares to the previous VW van . . . is it a lot bigger? Or same scale?
It looks great, the previous version is a decade old and it definitely shows.
Also worth noting, to my knowledge this is the first 18+ set to switch back to non-black instruction booklets

Pretty sure it's a print and not a sticker

Where did you hear that? No flimsiness with the final build at all in this review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdVjXxiDBzo
The rectangular window at the front of the door should be triangular, which throws off the look of the whole front end.

Nope definitely not. I’ll stick to my T1. Its a shame because I have all the creator expert vehicles to date. Yes some are better than others but as a re-hash, this is an easy pass. And with approx 50% more pieces this one should be way better looking than the T1. It isn’t to me unfortunately
It does seem that I’m not alone in struggling to see a good likeness. It’s all about the front end
spent many a happy summer as a child in one but this one doesn't look quite right at the front, needs to be ever so slightly curvier, not a lot but this interplay with windscreen element and curve doesn't quite get there for me. But loving the interior.. on balance it's a positive but think i'd have to mod a little if was to be on the shelf
The build is... oof. The front, which is the most iconic part, is not instantly recognizable; the side windows have a weird overhang; the roof features a bizarre "hump" atop the cabin that isn't really supposed to be there. Overall, a very strange design.
It's concerning how many sets aiming for "accuracy" lately have featured these kinds of in-your-face inaccuracies that could have easily been corrected through a bit more tinkering.

Yeah, after a second look I think you're right about that.
After looking at the comparison photos to the real vehicle I think the representation is above average but not quite as recognizable if you were to strip the VW branding off of it. 10220 was instantly recognizable, even if you removed the logos. With that said, the T2 isn't as....flashy(?)...as the T1. The thing that sticks out to me is the white to blue ratio is too even...needs more blue, less white. Overall, I like it and I'll probably pick it up.
Edit: where does the surfboard live?
I have a 1970 beige westy in my garage with original paint and curtains… I’ll be buying this model despite its imperfections.
It also seams they have used not correct model for the comparison photos. Actually the T2b instead of the T2a https://spitzetipps.com/wohnmobile-und-reisemobile/retro-classics-stuttgart-2020-vw-t2-und-t3-camper-ab-30-000-euro/
The same one you know and love, now with a questionable age rating slapped on the packaging!
(This isn't an actual opinion on the model itself, just wanted to make a joke)
I like the colour choice of this one.
I prefer 10220, it's more iconic, but I like this one too.
I just like the shape of T1 more. The front of this one is odd, and I also hoped for another color option. The WV prints are great, also the hippie strikers, but the blue ones look awful.
That's quite a few large vehicles all available at the same time as it stands: 10290 for preorder, 10279 , 10295 , 10271 , 10274 , 10265 , 10269 , 10262 , 10258 . I wonder if any of them will be retired soon.
The t2b would've looked nicer imo, with the directional lights being above the headlights and next to the grille piece.
Also don't get why the bumper is notched here, while it's straight on the real thing, I think a thicker white bumper might've looked more iconic.
Crazy price, pointless update given the T1 actually looks better then this updated version

This subject isn't quite as insufferable as the 501st battle pack...but it's getting there!
The 40% premium is almost double my exchange rate? Huh.
I've never owned a VW Camper but, like many I am sure, do have an odd hankering to own one. I have the previous T1 set, so this is a "must have" for me!
I love it! The price looks fair and the style is phenomenal! Maybe a day 1 buy for me!

You know, some folks here are interested in other themes beside SW, or are not into it at all.

This set may not look like much, but it's really got it where it counts. So many amazing Technic functions!
The more I look at the pictures the more I dont like it, lol.
Seriously, the proportions are all wrong!
Its great build, but as a MODEL of a real thing old one is MUCH better
My son got the Creator set a few years ago. He struggled to build it, but finally finished it, only to be devastated at how easily it fell apart. I'll pick this up for he and I to build together. He's a fan of the VW bus and I hope this one is sturdier.
Nothing beats the original. But this will still look good in the collection
Would like to see the two campers side by side for comparison. According to lego.com, the T1 is 30cm, and the T2 is 35cm. 900 more pieces than the T1.
I am certainly not a Volkswagen connoisseur, but I think with the pieces available they nailed it.
I will agree it could use more curve on the front and I think a different windshield could be better, but they obviously didn't feel the need to create new pieces to do that.
As for needing it...I don't know. I have the T1, so I don't really need another camper van. My parents have a VW van of some type (that also happens to be a light blue), so I may consider getting it because of that, but money is budgeted for only so many sets, so I guess another set will have to not get purchased.
Also, is anyone else getting Dharma vibes?? ah I miss that show

Click the EuroBricks link above. The size difference is substantial.
This looks like a box on wheels. I'm not recognizing it as a VW. I'm looking forward to the review, though.
Is bigger better I don't know. Hopefully this will be addressed in the review. I really like the colour. Did we need another VW van though? I can imagine there are so many other vehicles as well as other subjects they could have covered. We have already had or going to have a number of Creator vehicles this year.
That all said will likely end up buying this as I really like the VW style and this colour is really nice. I also am a sucker for the line of vehicles Lego puts out so I guess they got me.
This looks more like the VW vans I remember in the 1970s. The color is good, although I remember the baby blue & dusty blue colors here is the US.
Amazing! Another awesome set that I can't afford!!! ;(
I like the colours, but I wouldn't have recognised which van this is supposed to be...
I have an older version of this, so I'll keep the $179 in my pocket this time.
Folks should Google RESTORED 1970 VW TYPE 2 TRANSPORTER BUS. Pics of it looks like this set. This van has a flatter front than the previous style & is boxier too.
Time to get the T1. Been waiting for news/images of T2.
Now it's decided.

That's a common LEGO problem that LEGO refuses to address. Instead look at this lame Adult only section of LEGO.com which will never function like an actual website.
"
But only the best is good enough, right? Except when it comes to using some of their billion dollar profit to fix the colour issues that started 15 years ago when they made a bad choice with the then new molding machines.
Something about the front looks odd to me.
It's immediately recognizable of course, but something seems off.
Also that price. Doesn't scream "must have" to me. I'm happy with my 10220.
Won't be buying this as the interior is totally different that the real one I traveled in as a child. The closet on the side is missing. The sink/fridge is against the wall instead of where it belongs behind the front passenger seat. The pop-up roof opens in the wrong direction and at the wrong end of the vehicle. Maybe this is a replica of a later version than ours.

R2-D2, Bird of Paradise, and Typewriter were all back to readable instructions. Last one I've got with black instructions is the Space Shuttle.

My knowledge has failed me. I even built the Typewriter! Thank you

Dharma Initiative was great! Too bad the show had to suffer a guild writer's strike. They could/should have wrapped it up much better than they did - in the end there were more questions than answers.

Instantly. I was/am a big fan of LOST. This has a lot of customizing potential. :)
Does the roof/tent pop up fully (like 10220) or only tilt?
IMO the previous model was more "iconic," though I don't have any trouble recognizing this as a VW van.
As a VW owner and enthusiast, I can say they could have done better. The roof is too chunky and there's something about the front: headlights are too small/low. It is recognisable as a VW in a way, but they could have done a lot better.
Even though I own the previous version, I don't think I'll be buying this unless it goes on sale one day. I wish they chose another vehicle to make, and this is coming from a VW lover. LEGO need to stop recycling the same models every few years.
Yet another VW group car. Could have at least had a Golf GTI or Audi Quattro instead of another van.

I mean the previous one was released a decade ago, that isn't “every few years”
Yeah but still, there' plenty of iconic vehicles to choose from. Recently LEGO seem to be refining the same models over the years instead of looking for new models.
I have to admit it is a different bus to the previous version. First version was an early model, while this is late model, so it isn't exactly the same. But I'd like to see some variety.
I really like this set, though I will wait for a 15% discount to buy it. I think the building experience is quite enjoyable.
How come no one has mentioned that this model could fairly easily be converted to the blue US-spec T2 Van that appears in Back to the Future? You know, the one that Lybian terrorists use to go and assassinate Doc Brown? Then you'd need to get rid of the chairs and surfboard to replace them with AK-47s and an RPG :D
The prior version looks better to me.
This model has the same problem as the Fiat 500, the front windscreen has to be more rounded.
This looks identical to the one the chap who lives next door to my mum - 1977 'S' reg, same colours and trim type... Probably a day one for me but where will it live...?
