Review: 60298 Rocket Stunt Bike
Posted by Huw,City Stuntz sets are now available, although not the entire range. We've heard that some have been delayed due to a shortage of cardboard for the boxes and that independent retailers will not receive stock for some time.
Just two of the single motorbike sets were in stock at my local brand store this morning, 60297 Demolition Stunt Bike and 60298 Rocket Stunt Bike, the subject of this review.
The bikes consist of four main parts, plus a few embellishments to personalise them. The core of each is a new frame piece which incorporates a flywheel, 69869 MOTOR CYCLE, FRAME, W/ FLYWHEEL, NO. 1.
The fairing clips on top of it and so far there are three different designs in a range of colours. The front wheel is also new, but the tyre is not. A 30031 HANDLE W. 3.18 STICK provides handlebars.
This bike has a flame extending from the rear in an unusual and unrealistic place, and I suspect it will look better without it.
It's ridden by the eponymous Rocket Racer who's apparently a star of LEGO City TV. His racing overalls are colourfully decorated, and his different coloured arms are unusual and attractive.
A dark brown hair piece is provided for when he's off the bike.
The flywheel works very well: it's easy to give it a quick push and satisfying to see it continue across the table. It just takes a quick flick to send it flying, although some practice is needed to keep it upright when doing so.
The larger sets contain ramps to ride up but for this one you'll need to make your own.
The single motorcycle sets are priced at $7.99 / £6.99 / 7.99€ which, for what it is, seems expensive. But, I guess we are used to spending £4 on a single minifigure so a few extra pounds or dollars for the bike is not too bad I suppose.

Let’s be honest, your getting this for the figure and just the figure.
Speaking of which, no talking about the fig? No final thoughts? This review feels incomplete…. Just like the theme.
Did this review go up before it was finished? I would've hoped for it to include a review of the functionality of the bike itself. It seems novel and I'd like to know how effective it is.
I want to get at least one of the Stuntz sets just for the novelty of it, and having grown up with Lego Racers (the game that originated the character of Rocket Racer), this is the one I have my eye on.
Yes it did, I pressed 'publish' too soon. Sorry!

Also, I had no idea minifigs could hold onto their helmets like that!
^ They can, just about!

I can already hear it in my head without clicking any of the links
I also went to the local toyshop today to get this one. I'm so happy to finally have an official Rocket Racer minifigure. I remember making my own 20years ago.
It's a shame the new fairings are not compatible with the regular motorcycle molds.
I need this just for the fact that Rocket Racer is now available in minifig form and even better he's been modernized, Lego Racers 3 when?
I must admit I didn't realise Rocket Racer is such a big deal and has a large following!
Love the helmet. Gives that Rebel pilot vibe.

It's only unrealistic if you are assuming it's produced by the bike, and not Rocket Racer's previous evening's curry!
Rocket by name, Rocket by nature....
I understand the price, as it has the whole mechanism thing, but I do wish it came with a small ramp or some cones
Will the new chassis fit the bike from 10767?

Rocket Racer was technically already available in the 71021 Collectable Minifigure Series 18 as the Race Car Guy, albeit, not in his original LEGO Racers jacket.

The opposite for me (but I don’t follow the show). I have some kiddos who will have a blast with the bike mechanics and $8 is fine for a toy like this. These are going to be super fun.

LOL, I was going to say something like that in the review but decided against it :)
@huw, when you have a bit of time, could you offer us your views on how accurate/realistic the Stuntz promo video is with regard to the bike jumps, staying upright, speed, distance etc. I understand these videos can be over-exaggerated, but to my eye the physics shown seems quite possible if the motor has a lot of oomph.
Cheers as always!

Words going through my head:-

It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim,

@ComfySofa, where's the video?
I played a lot of LEGO Racers on Nintendo 64.
At least the bike and helmet are printed, which softens the price a little bit.
In comparison, I've gotten a few City minifigs for their fig+bike in the past for €5 but that was with a magazine :
951909: Pizza Delivery Biker (2019)
952010: Motorbike (2020)
So how's it goin' LEGO Racers fans?

I saw it via the Brickset link to the Amazon Lego shopping page.
After all these years, finally a Rocket Racer figure.
Would have preferred the classic Racers 1 look. This one looks like a mix between both versions, (the white base and helmet from Racers 2 + red and blue arms from 1) but it's nice to finally actually have the guy.
That flame piece is in that position in order to facilitate doing 'wheelies', it works as a limiter so the bike doesn't just flip backwards but instead rides upright on the back wheel and tip of the flame. There's some springiness from the flame piece which imparts a little bit of continuous bounce to the stunt. Pretty ingenious use of parts there!

I'm interesting in MOCing the flywheel, happy to sell you the fig!

There's one at
https://youtu.be/8pT_x50cKjc
Dunno if it's the same one.
These look great fun, but should have been closer to £5 which would have been just about justifiable for the functionality. Or should have included some small cones, barrel or flag etc. I appreciate cmf are almost hitting that price point but don't think anyone is saying that's a good thing!
Will pick some up if I see them on sale for that.

It has little to do with his appearance in the show, I'm sure; but he was the main opponent of the Lego Racers (5704) and Lego Racers 2 (5778) video games, back in the day, which are hugely nostalgic for fans of a certain age bracket. He was my favourite minifigure character as a kid, which compounded the frustration of him never having a physical form... and judging from the responses here, I wasn't the only one!
I'd have preferred him to have had printed legs, like his original in-game outfit... but if I get him, maybe I'll go looking for parts on bricklink to mod him to my satisfaction! I do like the return of his one-red-one-blue coloured arms, though; and while a transparent-black visor would have been more accurate to the games, I can't say no to trans-red!
In any case: looks nice, and I'll probably see about picking up my favourite Lego World Racing Champion sometime ^^

Ah yes. I think it's stretching reality a bit, but it's not far off. You can certainly pull wheelies!
I think @CapnRex101 bought one of the sets with ramps in so perhaps he'll enlighten us.
Good to see they are on Amazon, that means they'll be reduced soon enough!
Only thing that I don't like about it is that rear wheel is smaller than front. It would look better that rear wheel is same size as front
Picked up the two bike pack 60299 at my local Smyths store. The motors are pretty good and can easily travel over 10m if you have a smooth service with plenty of energy left (my hall isn't long enough to find out how much further). Smyths YouTube channel also has each Stuntz set in action, based on my tests they are accurate.
It's simple and pricey for its size at $8. But it's the flywheel works well and it rolls well then it could be a really good set.
At $6 I'd definitely buy it but at $8 it's just a maybe. I give the set a 'B' grade as it's right on the edge. Good, but weighed down by price.
did lego mini fig get put in a toy from another toy company? mini fig looks great the bike look like i came from some crappy china factory.
Add me to the list of people who'll be getting this for Rocket Racer. I had so much fun with Lego Racers 2 back in the day. Even if Rocket himself was really easy to beat.
Its the flywheel feature that is increasing the price.
But at the same time, its the flywheel feature that will see large numbers of kids want these.
This whole theme to me was pretty much, eh, new City stuff, a little bit - HOLD ON, IS THAT ROCKET RACER!??!?!
I have been wanting a Rocket Racer minifig for YEARS. Too bad he looks more like the version from the 2nd game instead of the first.
What’s good about these is they seem to incorporate the motor function without being too overt or obvious.
And yes, waiting for the chicken. Good to know they aren’t only delayed in Australia.

Likewise! Though I think he's a combination of both versions, to be fair. He still has the red and blue arms from his original incarnation, as well as the large RR logo in the middle of his chest - both aspects that were lost with his Racers 2 wardrobe change. Even the way the zipper encircles the logo could be seen as a loose callback to the arc shape around it on his classic shirt.
I feel like it's mostly the white base that calls back to the later design; and, apart from the torso itself, that looks like it could be an easy enough fix by swapping some of his other pieces out for different colours. Black hands and hips, light-grey legs (ideally with suitable print), appropriate helmet with black visor, and then I reckon he'd be much closer to his classic appearance ^^
At least, I plan to try out some of those changes if I get him myself! As well as maybe trying to build a physical version of his in-game car too...
To my eyes, Rocket Racer had an uncanny resemblance to one Ricky Bobby; I wonder what this figure looks like besides President Business
Thank you for this review. At first glance the helmet was enough for me to think about getting this set. On further reflection, I'm happier without it.
I think LEGO went with this color scheme of rocket racer to be more in line with the Evil Knievel , white suit with red/blue accents, while staying true to the games as well.
Picked this up at my local LEGO store today. They had one out of the box and even with a light push it went clear across the the store.

It's a delicate balance, but it is possible! Since the chinstrap on the helmet changes in depth, you'll have to get it in just the right side and angle to work.
To be fair, Rocket Racer did have a red/white/blue color scheme in LEGO Racers 2, even if it's less iconic than his red/gray/blue appearance in LR1. But the stuntman aesthetic does carry over too, hence why we saw it in the CMF Daredevil in red and white with some slight blue, or Duke Kaboom from Toy Story 4 predominantly in red and white also.
I am sooo looking forward to getting this one. Didn't too much of 'Lego Racers', but I did appreciate what they were 'going for'. Also; he's a 'named character', much like Johnny Thunder.
Wow a rocket racer minifigure, instant buy! Please LEGO make new Lego Racer series for modern consoles&PC , i still play the N64 version from time to time.
At first I loved this range 'cause the designs looked so good, then I hated it 'cause just the motorbikes costed a whole $8, now I'm loving this one again 'cause we're finally getting a physical release of Rocket Racer! Wacky times.
I’m disappointed that the fairings only work with the flywheel bases, but I’m curious what’s different about the front wheel? I can’t see any obvious differences from the photos.

The Bike shell is printed though. Not a sticker. So it's really nice.
I didn't realize till I looked at the back page of one of the instruction books. The Chicken Suit Guy is the Lego City Adventures Firefighter Clemmons.
