Luke's Lightsaber will be a GWP with the AT-AT
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has confirmed that 40483 Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber will be a gift with purchase with the AT-AT on one of its Chinese social media channels.
The 173-piece set will be available from the 26th November until 25 December or while stocks last, which I predict will not be long.

Hope the availability will be better than Yoda's lightsaber..
"This is outrageous. It's unfair."
At least there don't appear to be any unique parts, aside from the nameplate. I might still be able to build this.
Damn, I mean - they could make a whole line of these things and I'd buy all of them. These are a waste being GWP.
For those who have not understood, this is not a lightsaber, it is just a shaft ;-) no regrets!
No surprises here
I wish they would do decorative sets like this with the same treatment as the Helmet's range, but a bit more affordable.
Also, slightly off topic, but is anyone else yearning for some midi-scale, nicely proportioned and accurate looking star wars models that don't feature minifigs, like the classic 7778-1: Midi-scale Millennium Falcon

I'd like a sort of mini-UCS series. Big enough to be detailed and impressive, small enough to be affordable and manageable. For example, I love the look of 75252, but I have literally nowhere to display a 3ft long Star Destroyer. Heck, I don't think I have a table big enough to even build it on. A little bit smaller would be perfect. Maybe they could call it the Budget Collector Series?
What a tiny GWP for such an expensive outlay. Madness. I can't imagine people will buy the AT-AT to get the saber, but those that intended to buy the AT-AT anyway will get a nice, if not tiny, GWP. Personally I'd wait for double VIP points over the GWP... which you could probably build yourself for minimal cost.

Some people will feel shafted by this shaft only being available with a £750 set that's overpriced.
Still hope to get it with VIP points some time.
General Grevious is gonna be salty about this
I was prompted to look at the cost of Yodas lightsaber after seeing this. It cost £80+ new in box on secondary sites. I then checked the cost of parts on Bricklink and excluding the plaque, the cost was about £17. I like these lightsabers and will probably just collate the parts at some point

Was the Yoda Lightsaber last year available with VIP points at some time too?
I could see this being like the con exclusive busts that presaged the helmets line. Maybe another gwp first, but if they're successful, with this piece count they could occupy a cheaper price bracket than the busts as the new entry level 18+ sets. Maybe somewhere about 1/2, 2/3 of a helmet?
The problem would be distinguishing them, but they shouldn't make dozens anyway. A couple of standard saber gilts for Luke, Bader, ect, plus the more minor characters with visibly unique designs, like Dooku's curved hilts, or Maul's double length saber hilt.
Great! 800 euro paywall to get a GWP I'd prefer more than the UCS set itself.....

The penultimate collector series
I knew they were going to do this as soon as the AT-AT was revealed.
It means I'll never own it, which is disappointing, but oh well.
Are the GWPs getting the black box treatment now too?

Since the release of the AT-AT will be on Black Friday, there's a very good chance everything will be double VIP already.
Considering Yodas lightsaber ended up being about $70-$80 on resell market, I’m guessing this one will be even more since that At-At is so expensive. My guess is it ends up going for $120+
I would buy a whole line of these if they sold them individually. You could have the 20$ base ones like Luke’s, and Obi Wan’s. Then you could have a 30-40 dollar range for Maul’s saber, and Ahsoka’s sabers. Then you could have some 50 dollar sets of the Inquisitor sabers, and Maul’s saber from rebels. I would probably try to buy all of them if they did that.
This looks to be terrible value as a GWP. Most, based on the value I calculate for them, are about 10% of the spend threshold (e.g. the current coffee cart). But this one IO reckon is worth about £10, and similar sized sets (with minifigs) are about £18. For a £750 spend required, that makes no sense to me, unless you're a completionist collector.
I don't really care for the lightsabers or the helmets. I enjoy interacting with sets. Display models do not do anything for me. I own a bunch of UCS sets (too many, to tell the truth) and I came to realize that my favourite were the ones I could interact with, like the sandcrawler, the MF or the Slave 1. I do love the U-wing (which is borderline), but I don't care too much for the others (A-Wing, snowspeeder, etc.). I will not get the gunship for that reason. But I'm looking forward to getting the AT-AT. I've been saving like a little kid for months to get this. And the only reason I'll try to get at midnight on the 26th, is to get that lightsaber so I can resell it and offset the cost of the AT-AT a little.
I want this to go with the Yoda one but I can’t justify £750 to get it. I also expect stocks to be pathetic and therefore if you could afford the outlay you’ll need to be super quick!
If I can just buy this at a reasonable after market price then I’ll get one …
I prefer this one: https://buildbetterbricks.com/collections/lego-star-wars/products/custom-lego-luke-skywalker-a-new-hope-lightsaber-w-stand-instructions
Buy grey bricks... and get even more grey bricks!

No, I don't think it was. But sometimes some GWP are left over, which may be bought with points.
Predictable but disappointing. I wasn't planning on getting this bad boy on day 1, this won't change my mind. Heck, I got the cantina on day 1 but wasn't able to get Yoda's lightsaber either!
I'd love to see these lightsabers become a proper range of sets like the helmets, but making the most famous one a GWP doesn't fill me with confidence that that will happen.
It’s not on a 1:1 scale…
These should be their own series, not a GWP. There is a series of great MOC’s on Rebrickable. Great lightsaber designs.
I don’t remember who but someone absolutely called that yesterday. Very disappointing to me but I understand
I think a box with 36 snowtroopers would've been very nice as a GWP for the AT-AT.
Not overly excited about Lego lightsabers I guess.
Available from 00:01 26/11/2021 until 00:02 26/11/2021.
…and still no Jedi Bob
Buying mine on the secondary market. Probably be £100.
Wait until AT-AT set reduced by £200 before buying it - £100 better off and no stress trying to get the GWP free. Scalpers do have their uses
Huh…I was originally planning to hold off on the AT-AT for a bit, since I have yet to buy the Star Destroyer. But if this truly is an exclusive GWP in the U.S., I may change my mind.
Either way, it’s a shame that these saber builds are turning into an exclusive subtheme. I could definitely see them being successful as standalone products (I’d certainly be interested).

Flip your mentality - this GWP is like a massive discount on the AT-AT, as it will likely clock $200 on the aftermarket. Yoda's Lightsaber is vastly less impressive, was attached to a kit half the price, and was in a slipshod yellow box - and that's $130+. Buy the AT-AT on day 1 if you're lucky enough to dodge the scalpers and you can sell the saber to recoup 20-25% of the set's cost if you don't care about the GWP.
Wish I was in a position to drop $800 on a Lego set. Then again, if I had $800 to spend on Lego I'd just buy the Millennium Falcon.
You know what would be a better GWP for the UCS AT-AT? 35 additional Snow Trooper minifigures.

I agree. Although there are rumors about a snowtrooper battlepack in january. 3 snowtroopers + 1 Hoth scout trooper (with a bike similar to that of the two in the AT-AT set hopefully). Pictures of the scout trooper have leaked.

The reason Yoda lightsabers are expensive is because LEGO didn't make enough. Out of stock in less than an hour. They're somewhat rare. They also didn't make nearly enough of the set it was tied to (Mos Eisley Cantina).
Maybe LEGO learned from that because the Chariot availability was extended for months. Or it could be they're just bad at estimating demand.
If LEGO decides to make enough Luke lightsabers this time, the reseller prices won't be quite so high.
Very cool! This makes the AT-AT a definite day one purchase for me! I’ve loved the AT-AT ever since I first saw them in The Empire Strikes Back, and lusted after 4483 when it came out (I eventually got two). This lightsaber hilt sweetens the deal even more so!

If the picture is indeed of the GWP and not a mockup then I agree. My son and I built the BBB version and other lightsaber hilts by the same designer and I have to say they're quite nice.

Do the really big sets ever get large discounts? Dont remember the Star Destroyers or Falcon getting them
LEGO will probably post the instructions for this online the day the promo goes live and it seems to be built out of a bunch of very normal pieces (except the printed tile), shouldn't be too hard to do this yourself if you're interested in it as a cool little model and not as a collector's item.

John Lewis regularly have £100/£150 off of them."
Ok. Will keep my eye out for those in future. Always try to buy things as soon as they come out as worry they will sell out and you’ll miss the GWP. If you always get 100-150 off the big sets, then that’s the GWP from the after market price so no rush…..

Smyths had a decent chunk off the Falcon at some point.

I always welcome the midi-scale topic because I’d love a new theme of ships in that size. They could even do Architecture adjacent sets like Cloud City and Jabba’s palace.
I was hoping that the Nebulon-B was a sign of good things to come, but it was here and gone immediately. Which was a bummer.
Somebody needs to buy the AT-AT and the Home Alone house and show the AT-AT crushing it with its giant feet.
Technically that's Anakin's lightsaber that Luke lost in ESB. We see Luke's actual lightsaber in RotJ.
I'll see myself out.

Personally I’d like that but you know how upset people get when there’s either little to no or no figures in something.. they loose their shit especially once that M&R mentions it all his followers cry too… it’s a shame

Lose, surely. I’d hate it if it was loose.
I will likely try to build the handle sometime. I have a Darth Maul handle I MOC'ed. It looks pretty solid.
I scrolled all the way down and noticed the Site Statistics:
"Between us we own 31,346,339 sets worth at least US$977,650,809 and containing 9,763,425,525 pieces."
I guess we'll reach US$1,000,000,000 and 10,000,000,000 pieces with the release of the AT-AT.
It's amazing how the average price is at US$0,10 per piece. Or precisely US$0,1001339956/piece.

Whilst what you propose isn’t scalping (buying in bulk to reduce availability to artificially increase demand to then release them for sale at heavily increased prices) it’s still annoying. Those that manage to get the GWP with every intention of flipping it at a silly price on the secondary market are reducing availability and increasing demand in a similar way to a scalper. Either way it’s $h!tty
Last UCS I bought was the UCS ISD for £500. Saved £150
Paid full price for my UCS Falcon and UCS Slave I but haven’t paid full price for any of the other UCS sets I have (about 20)
Dear The LEGO Group:
Go f*ck yourself for, again, locking something a ton of people want behind an overpriced set.
Sincerely,
p`*ssed off Star Wars fans worldwide.
Not a big fan of this kind of set.
Even to be displayed it's of little interest. Not to mention that it is probably not a fascinating build.
