LEGO House design unveiled
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has unveiled the design of the LEGO House museum/visitor centre that it plans to open in Billund:
"When the LEGO House opens in 2016, visitors to the house in Billund, Denmark will enter a building that resembles gigantic LEGO bricks combined and stacked in a creative way to create an imaginative experience both outside and inside. In the experience center, guests can expect hours full of active fun while at the same time engaging in an educational and inspirational experience – everything that LEGO play offers."
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, LEGO owner, explains: “The LEGO House will show the past, present and future of the LEGO idea and I am certain it will be a fantastic place, where LEGO fans of all ages and their families and friends will get a wide range of unique LEGO experiences. It is our belief that LEGO play fosters innovative thinking, and the LEGO House gives us an opportunity to make it very tangible what LEGO play offers and how it stimulates children’s creativity and learning.”
Having just visited Billund, I saw where the building's going and it will dominate the centre of the town. Large swathes of the current buildings are being demolished to make room, including the only pub in town. However, there's no doubt that it will bring new life to the place and make it a (even more) fantastic place to visit.
The press release contains a video that shows what'll be inside. (Thanks grogall for the heads-up).

Looks like I will be saving up for a trip to Denmark!
Me too!
OMG That's where all my college money's going. :( Thanks a lot, KKK. :O
@lego613master: I would avoid referring to mr. Kristiansen by his initials.
^Yeh unfortunate initials. I think people call him 3K ?
I love how the video has an "Architecture" front card! They GOTTA make a set out of this!
Oh... Sorry, I forgot.
3K then, I didn't realize. It's already been an hour and I can't edit my comment.
Looks like a trip to Denmark is on the cards in 2016.
That Lego "museum" in the "basement" looks very cool. I always had the idea to start my own Lego museum if I have enough money and time. Looks worth a trip, especially if you combine it with LegoLand.
Looks great! I think a trip there is a good call. I never realised Kirk's initials before - triple K would be a pretty ridiculous nickname though. I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't make an architecture set based on it to be honest.
I will be there at the grand opening, I will be 20 then! Is my dream to become a Lego Model Designer!!
That looks amazing! Hope I can go someday!
God. This looks like my fathers dream house!!! O_O
It also says it will have a 'unique LEGO shop'. I wonder what that'll be!
250,000 visitors annually? That's a laugh. Given that LLB has around 2 million a year, I would expect the LEGO House to get well over half a million a year, if not touching the full million. I hope they've planned extra capacity . . .
The building looks great, but it does seem a bit off; being all white. Since the design is inspired by Lego bricks, why not make each block a different Lego colour . . . (Buildings in that part of the world are traditionally colourful too.)
Cool video! In the video, did I see the original Castle set from 1978 on display in a case? I love the little details in the video. I would love to go when the LEGO House is completed!
Wait, they're gonna demolish the only pub?
Going to have to start saving for a trip to Denmark .
I love lego, but knocking down the local pub? That's not right! Perhaps they could build a lego pub next door :)
Call me cynical but I think that's all wrong. When I hear 'Experience centre' I already get itchy. This building is an architects wet dream that will look completely out of place and will dominate the cosy little town that is Billund.
And where are all the cars meant to go? The centre of Billund can't cope with the volume of traffic this will attract.
The lego store in there is HUGE! Can't wait to see it built!
I went to the first Lego Kids' Fest back in the fall of 2009 in Hartford CT, If I remember correct something like 150,000 people showed up...
the first day.
Sure that's easier with lots of big cities in the area, but still, that's insane.
So I really hope this is a massive house, not that I ever will be going.
@caperberry, they probably will make a set out of it, and it will probably be an exclusive to those who visit it when it opens, or possibly anyone who visits it at any time.
Is it just me, or is the video soundless?
The lego museum is an excellent idea. However, I am not sure about the impact of this on a local area e.g. the pub demolition and so on.
Shame they're knocking down so much, but this place is going to be fantastic.
I also have no sound. But i think that this will be amazing!
