The LEGO Group teams up with PlayStation to bring to life the new LEGO Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck set

The LEGO Group and PlayStation join forces to delight fans of both brands with the very first LEGO set inspired by the world of Horizon Forbidden West. Working with acclaimed developer Guerrilla, the collaboration recreates the authentic features within the Horizon Forbidden West video game and transforms the experience into LEGO brick form for fans around the world. Designed as a build and display model, this 1,222-piece set is sure to invite builders into the 31st century and encourage imaginations to flow freely through the process of building out the Horizon universe.

This LEGO set for adults will take builders into an adventure world through Aloy, a fierce machine hunter and the Tallneck, the iconic and awe-inspiring machine Aloy uses to explore nearby areas in her mission to restore order and balance in Horizon Forbidden West. Included in this set is a brand-new headpiece for Aloy, the Watcher machine that comes with a choice of blue, yellow or red eyes and her bow and brick-built spear, alongside the authentic Tallneck machine, with a smooth, disc-shaped head and long slim legs to add striking features within the model. Fans can finish their build by adding the beautiful landscape details like the brick-built birch tree, tall grass and a rusty stoplight, completing the centrepiece for its display moment.

“Getting to team up with Guerrilla was truly remarkable” says Isaac Snyder, Designer at the LEGO Group. “The Guerrilla team is incredibly passionate about the world of Horizon Forbidden West and were a huge help in ensuring we were able to create an authentic representation in LEGO form. Thanks to our close collaboration we were able to include references to all the most iconic aspects of Horizon Forbidden West, from incredible machines, mysterious ruins, unique tribes and stunning scenery. There is a huge amount of mutual respect between the design teams and everyone involved was beyond excited to see this model come to life! Our hope is that everyone building this model has as much fun as we did designing it.”

The buildable Horizon Tallneck model has 1222 pieces, measures over 34 cm (13.5 in.) high, 23 cm (9 in.) wide and 17 cm (6.5 in.) deep and will be available from May 2022 on LEGO.com, LEGO brand Retail Stores, and major retailers globally for 79.99 EUR/ 79.99 USD / 69.99 GBP / 129.99 AUD / 99.99 CAD.

Further images are available on the set details page.

Pleasantly surprised at that price point

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is wonderful! I'm not a fan of the game, but I hope that this opens the door to other 18+ Video Game sets. So excited to see what Lego can cook up in the future :)

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Aloy looks like one of the best figures of all time. On top of that you have a beautiful looking build that's reasonably priced. More of this across all themes, please! :3

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I know the Uncharted set was a fake rumor introduced by a fan site, but I like to think this is one step closer to that being a possibility one day.

Gravatar
By in United States,

TIL that "Horizon Forbidden West" exists.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm completely unfamiliar with the source material, but that's a beautiful model.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What??? What on earth?!? No one would have guessed LEGO to announce this Galidor-looking alien giraffe from a niche videogame no one has heard about. No more making fun of Vidiyo or the sneaker... this is probably the most unexpected weird set ever.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Is that price point correct? for over 1200 pieces I'd expect AT LEAST €100, or close to €120.
For €80? holy *** yes please! Awesome! more of this!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

1,222 pieces for £70?! Yesterday's Mandalorian ship was £65 and can't have half that!

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

So hyped for this! Glad they were able to squeeze in Aloy and a Watcher too.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love this, hopefully more sets come out from this line!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Awesome set! Loved the first Horizon game, and can't wait for the sequel. Not sure if this will sell 20 million copies like the game though ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is exactly the way I want Lego to explore video game licenses. This is spectacular.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Licensed 1222-piece (and not just dots) set for 80€. Meanwhile Mando's 411-piece N-1 is rumoured to cost 70€. I'm trying to make sense of this and I can't.
This is an amazing set though.

Not exactly my type of game, but the first one sold 20 million copies - I'd argue those are far from niche figures!

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Not a Horizon player but this looks impressive. Though why is there no close-up picture of Aloy? She's the protagonist!

The game hasn't even come out yet. It's the upcoming sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, which is absolutely a household name among gamers. The name "Horizon" alone is recognizable. Not sure where you live where "no one" has heard about it.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Day 1 purchase, an excellent offer.

Gravatar
By in France,

I barely know the video game but that's hell of a fantastic looking set that seems pretty fun to build too. And that price tag ! o_O The minifigure is neat too

Gravatar
By in United States,

Finally! I'm pretty blown away by how they captured the curves so well, I honestly didn't expect it would look so good. And the Aloy fig looks perfect, a very early candidate for minifig of the year for me

I am surprised this is coming out in May, more than two months after the sequel game itself. I was hoping for a "surprise drop" kind of announcement. Will definitely be a day one purchase! And will definitely still be much easier to find than a PS5, I almost certainty won't have had a chance to play the game by May anyway.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Awesome!
The watcher looks good too.
They could have done better with Aloy's weapon (brick-based long bow maybe).

I can always count on the Brickset comments section for replies that are hilariously out of touch with pop-culture.

By in Italy,

Day one buy, my fav set of the year so far

Gravatar
By in United States,

For anybody unfamiliar with Horizon, the first game Horizon Zero Dawn is now out on PC. One is my favorite games of all time, I would definitely suggest giving it a go if you have any interest in gaming.

Beyond being a thrilling game, it's legitimately one of my favorite sci-fi stories in any book, movie, game, whatever in years.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't have the faintest idea what this is a model of but as an abstract piece of art, I like it!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have no idea what this is about - I've never heard of these games. At that price, however, it might be worthwhile as a parts pack.

Gravatar
By in France,

I don't know the game but this looks awesome, and not pricey !

Also the "head" will please Star Trek fans like myself ^^

Not everybody likes/is interested in videogames. But that's fine, it's ok to not like every thing. For example, I'm not interested in Marvel or Star Wars movies/merchandise/Lego sets, but I recognize their popularity.

Also, I like this model, despite being a fan of the "opposite side" (I'm a big Nintendo fan), and appreciate what Horizon has become.

I tend to forget that the videogames and Lego fanbases don't overlap so much. Probably that's why this announcement is received kinda quietly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not a gamer, so I have no idea what this is. But wow! What a cool build, with an excellent mini and at a great price. Can we get this all the time Lego? Thank you!

To be fair, it still feels like a niche, compared to the hundreds of millions of people who are lego fans, and don't care about videogames.

I've never even played the game (I should! Got the disc laying around somewhere) and I'm a bit tempted to get the set. Gorgeous design both in general and as a build! Huge props to the designer.

Yeah, the difference is that you're aware of their popularity. The other commenter somehow isn't, claiming "no one" has heard of the Horizon games. How do you take such a statement seriously? It's not like they've never played a video game in their life.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Looks like Zero Dawn to me, but I guess if they're gonna appear in the new one , it makes some sense to market it that way, still weird that they don't mention Horizon zero dawn once.

Only got the game recently and have only encountered one tall neck so far but I like this a lot and the price is fair, which is nice.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Please consider me biased because I contributed to the games, but this is such a fantastic design and now an official Lego set! Suuuper excited everyone (including me) gets to build one!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It looks cool but I have no idea what it is or where it's from . Totally clueless.

Gravatar

Can't say I've played the game or am familiar with the source models, but this sure is a pretty looking set.

Gold Uruk-hai swords! Nice. The build definitely caught me off guard when I first opened Brickset but dang if it doesn't look nice. And 1,222 for $80?? Hot diggity

I don't expect everyone to have heard about everything or like everything, and that is totally fine.

However, when people don't know about something, I'm not sure where they get the insight to say it's "niche" or that it's something "no one's heard of".

My issue is not with people not knowing about things, it's their arrogance in commenting that because they haven't heard of it, no one else has either, or that if they don't like it, it's "weird" or unwanted as a Lego product. Replies like that are not uncommon in the comments section on this site, particularly whenever a new pop-culture based theme/set is announced.

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES! This is incredible! Day one buy for me.
I can only hope this sells like hotcakes and they make more Horizon sets. So many machines (i.e. all of them) I'd love to have in Lego form!

EDIT: I do wish they did something a bit more dynamic with the legs to make it look like it's walking. These machines are always lumbering around the game world and never just stand around static. Luckily shouldn't be too hard to remedy judging by how it's built. Still, small complaint for a gorgeous model.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That's a real set? It looks amazing, and I love the Aloy minifigure.

Gravatar

I suspect this marketing is going to stick around a while. The copy emphasizes this is a "build and display" model, and the legs look to be fixed. There are different standards for these sets top-to-bottom, and the boxes reflect that.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I don't know the game at all. Most of the thing looks really cool, but then the head looks totally stupid.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I'm not allowed to promote ourself but we are offering it even cheaper then the MRSP of 80 euro.

But OT, I don't know the game but the sets looks amazing!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I think i need to have this. Superb set

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a Bionicle! Actually I just finished playing the first game last month so I'm excited for this. I hope that this sells well enough that they decide make more of the robot/creatures.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big surprise and I’m really looking forward to this set. It’ll look nice next to my Overwatch Bastian. I’m a little disappointed in the color choice for the base, especially since the new game is based in the west. I would’ve expected a desert like setting or maybe a nicer shade of green.

It upsets me that the head of that Tallneck looks like a perfect Enterprise saucer section, but we don't have official Lego Star Trek.

Good model, good minifig, good display base - good price?! What's going on? Isn't this licensed? I love it. Not quite enough to buy it, but close.

By in Netherlands,

I have the first Horizon Dawn, still shrink-wrapped and never played... Has something to do with having a kid when it first came out! Might be time to break it out of its plastic prison to see what the fuss is about.
Excellent year for Lego all round. Can't wait for the UCS Transformers Optimus Prime either!

Gravatar
By in Spain,

Pleasantly surprised. First, I discovered the game out of the blue when it was free on the Playstation Network (it is an excellent scifi story). Second, I never though of a Lego set about it. Finally, it looks like a very good set.

This quote gives me hope there is a chance of more Horizon sets. There's some truly amazing creatures in Horizon Zero Dawn (and Forbidden West) and there's an amazing MOC of the Thunderjaw made by Nicola Stocchi on Rebrickable

Gravatar

I like this set! Great game, glad it's happening. I'm just rather surprised that a Horizon Zero Dawn set was made before a Legend of Zelda set!

Awesome. Was really hoping LEGO would take up Horizon Zero Dawn at some point. The material just lends itself perfectly to being done in LEGO. And the game is fantastic.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Looks like a high-quality fan MOC. Love it. Never would have expected Lego to present a set on that particular game world. And compared to other Lego sets the price is fair. Great minifig, too.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Fantastic! Maybe not day one but as soon as possible. Now, if this is successful, I would like to see a giant motorised version of this in Lego Technic (for once, this is a theme actually made for Technic). Let's say a 5000-6000 pieces walking tall neck - that would be so sweet - and a good learning experience as the walking gait would be somewhat complex to reproduce.

(And a giant Technic set would be more to scale to Aloy)

Also very good timing for once! The sequel releases this Friday (18th of Feb 2022).

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I've never played Horizon but this is a very good set that I hope opens the door for more videogame sets

Gravatar
By in Romania,

I bounced off Horizon Zero Dawn after 20+ hrs because of the Ubisoft style open world, but I'll always love the robotic animal designs so definitely getting this one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bricklinked a MOC of the tallneck years ago, looked great but was ridiculously fragile. So happy to get an official build now.

No idea what this is but it looks awesome!!! The price point for the size looks really good, though hard to tell really till you see a physical review. Still it's something different and cool looking and I love it, though really have no idea what it is lol. If the press release hadn't mentioned Playstation I wouldn't have known it was a video game :P

By in United Kingdom,

Few AFOLs here that have been living under a BURP! I'm all for new licences, especially when they're beautiful sets like this one. I own HZD but I haven't yet got into it properly, maybe it's time to dust off the old controller.

The way I see it, you can pull up the rope ladder and start shouting whenever you think there's a danger of someone Unworthy getting into the clubhouse, or you can be excited to meet all the new people who are coming in to learn to love the thing you love.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Day 1 buy, day 1 build. Not even a question. What a fantastic surprise for the first ever Playstation set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've never played the game (nor have I actually heard of it), but it looks neat. The idea seems well done in brick form. I likely won't pick it up since I know nothing of the IP. Maybe if I come into some money I'll consider it. Otherwise, I have too many other obligations.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love this. Played the first game to death, will do the same to the new one.

Here’s hoping for more entries in the theme.

Looking at you, Thunderjaw.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This set looks truly awesome - and for that price?

When I saw the pictures, my first thought was: well, looks awesome, there goes another 150 euros. I am not sure I will get it Day 1 (other sets / collections fight for the budget), but yeah, I would definitely love to get this one!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I know nothing about the game or franchise, so this is a question to those who do: Is there an in-universe reason why the pearl gold Uruk-Hai sword is missing above the machine/creature’s right shoulder in the official pictures?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is the lower right spine also missing from the Tallneck in universe like the display model?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I must be old. I have absolutely no idea what this is.

Gravatar

I've had my eye on this game ever since I first learned of it, but even if I don't ever play it I'm getting this set as soon as I can!

Unless it's something as ubiquitous as Super Mario Bros. sets based off of video games are niche products. Most people either aren't gamers or are just casual gamers and will be only vaguely similar in this game if at all. That's not to say that it's a bad thing to produce a set like this, because it's definitely a big enough niche and there's nothing wrong with LEGO catering to a group that's not quite a general audience. This is not niche. Video games are immensely popular, and this game's 20 million in sales is no joke. Super Mario Bros games rarely top 20 million in sales. In fact, to date, the only one to surpass this is the original Super Mario Bros from the NES, released in 1985.

No you don't understand, unless grandma and grandpa have heard of it, it's niche. And what do you mean videogames are immensely popular? All the arcades that used to be near me are closed and I haven't taken the Atari 2600 out in ages!

In other news, I don't understand why Lego is making Marvel sets. Those movies are pretty niche, I have heard that Charlton Heston hasn't been in any of them yet.

Yes. Some of the machines are damaged, and each Tallneck is unique. Sometimes Aloy has to jump and swing from one appendage to the next to reach the top. I think on one of them the spines are missing entirely. But it’s been a long time since I played it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow this is beautiful. I really did love the gameplay of the first game, although the dialogue was too fatalistic for me. It gave me really dark vibes. I would have liked the game more had the dialogue and characters been a little lighter (as much as they can be for a dystopian game).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@peterlmorris, Thanks for clarifying. Presumably, the damaged machines aren’t easily repaired and therefore remain broken.

Hopefully, for those who aren’t into the franchise and just get the set just because they like it, there’ll be an extra Uruk-Hai sword.

The story of HZD is pretty intense. The machines did have auto-repair features, but if I remember correctly, they’re breaking down due to other story-related events.

Big fan of the game, so this will be a buy for me. Love the Aloy minifigure in particular!

By in Canada,

No idea what this is or anything about the game but I think it looks cool. Think I may get the set!

By in Israel,

Nailed it!

They say also a clock that stopped working gets the time right twice a day.
They say also a blind rooster pecks a grain every once in a while.

It's encouraging to see the company who keeps marketing Brickheadz, Lego city Police stations (with fewer bricks each time), tv series scenes, plastic lump guitars, plastic lump hammers, and those annoying helmets, still has the capabilities to offer value to its clients.

Would love to get the Horizon Tallneck as a Technic or Mindstorms but, i guess beggars can't be picky.

This and the BMW bike will have to do.

Amazing set and a reminder that I gotta play the first one again, I’ve gotten nowhere a month and a half after starting it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've never played the (first game), but they've done a really nice job of capturing the source material and that price is a downright steal. Well done Lego.

High High High on my list!

By in United States,

I wouldn't have thought that LEGO and video games were mutually exclusive as some here seem to be pointing out. I've spent a LOT of time on Horizon Zero Dawn and really enjoyed the game. I'm waiting to see some of the gamer reviews before purchasing Forbidden West but this set totally caught my eye. The Aloy minifigure looks spot-on! Definitely a purchase for me.
Maybe the next set could be a Ravager with a Sylens minifig!

Gravatar

Not one I'll be purchasing (thankfully) - hoping for more sets that don't appeal this year so I don't spend as much as last year

Gravatar
By in United States,

Woah hey look, they brought BIONICLE back!!!

In all seriousness I love this set. Combined with the one off Sonic set from Ideas it feels like we could be getting a full line of videogame based LEGO sets in the near future. Some personal hopes of mine:

Gaius. Shadow of the Colossus has some excellent designs, and while the 3rd one might not be my favorite it's definitely the most suited for a set release. It's such a tall and imposing figure and would look stellar opposite side this puppy on a shelf.

GLaDOS. The main antagonist of Portal (or I guess Portal 2 in this case) appeared as a brick built model in LEGO Dimensions. I've personally hunted down most of the parts to rebuild her in real life, though an official set release/more stable model would be appreciated.

Undertale. Like just, anything Undertale. That game was a masterpiece with so many iconic characters and designs. I'd personally most like Omega Flowey (though that would induce nightmares in some kids) or a microscale vignette of Snowdin.

Hyrule Castle. Really, the no brainer of the bunch. People have been begging for LEGO Zelda for like a decade now, and given how well the Mario stuff has been flying off the shelves you'd think more Nintendo IPs would get the brick built treatment, but apparently not.

The Classic Four from FNAF. FNAF has gone back and forth from being a horror franchise and a comedy franchise over the years, but none the less has remained a pop culture juggernaut. I'd personally love 4 mech style sets using those new SCCBS parts to recreate the villains of the first game. Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate. If LEGO wants to go all out you could even make them 2-1 models to swap between Classic and Withered forms. Sure there are other iconic robots from the franchise, like the Puppet, Springtrap, or Circus Baby, but you've got to get the original band out of the way first. Last I checked, McFarlane toys have the license, but I don't think they've released anything in a few years.

By in Australia,

I am also on the side of "barely aware of the game but want to buy that set just because it looks cool". I didn't know anything about Overwatch either but the hamster ball was a favourite set and surprisingly good value. So I have high hopes for this

FNAF is popular again but LEGO Ideas doesn’t allow projects on it and between the lore and the overall focus on jump-scares I doubt they’ll make sets based on it regardless. It’d be cool, though, although it 100% should have a Purple Guy Minifigure or build (maybe just a buildable Springtrap if his design isn’t considered too graphic).

Sony PR works fine, a good price-per-piece. A display model, but sounds like a dull assembling process.

I honestly thought more people would be against this in the comments. I feel like LEGO is making too many sets based on video games recently. It's just really annoying and dumb. Why can't their energy be put into making LEGO City better?

You say that as if most Brickheadz and tv show sets don't offer value. Like say what you want about the shows themselves, but you can't legitimately say that Central Perk, Seinfeld, and the Friends Apartments don't offer fantastic value. People are constantly moaning about pocket money sets, and Brickheadz fills that slot perfectly, even if the grouchy old men here might not always get the appeal.

The guitar, hammer, and helmets toe the line much closer to a fair value, rather than a great value. I've got no interest in defending City, go wild on that one. But to act like the majority of sets don't present value of fine to great is just comical. The fact that you personally don't like a sliver of their products doesn't mean that they've lost their way

Funny, I think the reverse— I want more video game sets, just because they’re branching out doesn’t inherently mean that it’s detracting from City, maybe they just don’t care about the line in general and would just dedicate that energy to other (most likely new) licensed themes instead of this one. Would y’all really prefer a line based on Boss Baby 2 over this?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've only once bought a set with the intention of never taking it apart, but this might be the second. The parts don't scream "super useful for mocs" to me, but the completed set is just so cool. The games look fun to play, but not enough to buy a PlayStation or PC. The design in the trailer for the new game is phenomenal, I might buy a poster for it or make mocs based on it.

Not exactly my type of game, but the first one sold 20 million copies - I'd argue those are far from niche figures!"

The more the merrier IMO."

This is not niche. Video games are immensely popular, and this game's 20 million in sales is no joke. Super Mario Bros games rarely top 20 million in sales. In fact, to date, the only one to surpass this is the original Super Mario Bros from the NES, released in 1985.

Source: https://www.gamecubicle.com/features-mario-units_sold_sales.htm "

There's been more than just the one Super Mario Bros. game that have passed 20 miilion in sales.

That game you mentioned sold just over 40 million, New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS as well as the Wii version called New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold just over a massive 30 million each, the most recent game Super Mario Odyssey sold 23.02 million and Super Mario World sold just over 20 million. That's almost 145 million sales in just those five games alone.

And then there's three Mario Kart games that have sold more than 20 million each, one of which recently got past 43 million for the Switch version alone. They're not the same series of games granted but that's context of how well the games under the Mario umbrella do."

I'd be interested in a source for this if you have one; obviously mine wasn't comprehensive. Still, 20 million in sales is nothing to sneeze at.

I care little about video games. I had no idea of this game prior to this set coming out. But, I love it! I can't wait for more video game collaborations. Just like the Overwatch sets, most have interesting, imaginative builds and cool minifigures. Yes, please!

@Hangfest:
Video games have historically been very popular with teens and twentysomethings, who have free time to play and cash flow to buy them. As people get older, video games become more of a luxury, unless you’re using them to bond with your kids. For a non-gamer, properties like Halo are household names because they’ve run at least a dozen TV ads for various entries in that line, but the first I heard of Horizon was someone mentioning that a rumor of a “Horizon Longneck” was making the rounds. I asked what “Horizon” and “Longneck” were, but got no response. The only thing that came to mind was a type of beer bottle, which I figured was safe to rule out. The very next instance where the name came up was an in-store pop-up display for the sequel game. Still didn’t tell me what a “Longneck” was, but it at least confirmed my suspicion that a video game was involved.

If they don’t get TV ads, new franchises don’t register with most people. The number of new franchises I’ve leaned about that way is significantly less than the number of franchises that are still going strong since I was a kid. So, realize that the average person isn’t even likely to realize this is based on a video game. And 20 million copies may be huge for a video game developer, but there are three cities in China that have populations greater than 20 million, and HZD isn’t even one of the top 50 video games by sales. It’s close, so that may change if the sequel creates a surge of new interest in the original.

Also, not every copy of the game will translate to a sale. Many of those were probably rental copies, many more were probably sold back to Gamestop for store credit, not everyone who bought it will have enjoyed the gameplay, and not everyone who did will want to buy a LEGO set based on that. On the other hand, not everyone who buys this will have heard of the game before now, or will ever play the game in their life. It is a very striking design, and some copies will sell to people who just like the sci-fi look, or for parts.

@MainBricker:
I didn’t think shoe collecting was that big until someone I know said he would be appearing on Collector’s Call, so I started recording the show. One episode featured s shoe collector, and he had a room that had floor to ceiling shelves just packed with shoes. Stores like Foot Locker have less shoes on display than this one room held, and that wasn’t even his whole collection. That type of collector absolutely would buy the LEGO set.

@iabstract:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

SMB ranks 6th with 58 million copies, and New Super Mario Bros ranks 17th (DS) and 18th (Wii) with over 30 million copies each. Super Mario World is 30th, with over 26 million copies. SMB3 is 37th, with over 24 million copies. Super Mario Odyssey is 45th with 23 million copies. Super Mario 64 (DS) is 47th with almost 23 million copies. And New Super Mario Bros U rounds out the Top 50 with over 21 million copies. Other Mario games on the list include Mario Kart 8 (7th, over 51m), Mario Kart Wii (14th, over 37m), Super Smash Bros Ultimate (29th, over 27m), and Mario Kart DS (44th, over 23m). That’s 12 of the top 50 best-selling games that include or reference Mario in the title. The original Sonic for Sega’s inaugural game system (and arguably the only reason many people bought that console) is 41st with almost 24 million. And top of the list is Minecraft, which puts everything to shame as it continues to close in on 240 million.

To be fair, Nintendo in general has a loyal following, and Mario is the flagship character who accompanies pretty much every new Nintendo console or handheld in some form (sometimes even being bundled inside the box), so the games get a huge boost from early adopters. But that wouldn’t be the case if people didn’t like the games.

I checked out the link you posted. I can’t find a publication date in the text, but there are a few clues:
1. It starts with “In the last 20 years...”
2. The oldest game listed came out in 1985.
3. The newest game listed came out in 2002, and has no sales data.
4. There’s a copyright notice dated 2000-2001.
5. There’s a link by the copyright pointing to “Njntendo’s officials Gamecube site”.

I think it’s a fair assumption that this was most likely published before 2002, making it 20 years out of date.

It does confirm what I said about many Mario games being bundled with consoles and handhelds, but some of the numbers quoted don’t match the sources used for the Wikipedia list (SMB3 is short by 7 million, suggesting it sold less than HZD).

By in Japan,

Wow, just got the first game yesterday as it was dirt cheap on PSN. Was immediately blown away by it. So far it has been really enthralling. Seeing trailers for the sequel also are stoking the hype for me. This set looks very nice and I am wowed at how out of the blue this came. I hope this means future sets inspired by games. Would love me some Warframe or sets with minifigs from Nintendo's large roster of characters.
