COMIC-CON - LEGO announces two new Minecraft sets for 2013

LEGO have today announced two new Minecraft sets for release on September 1st.
COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL: SAN DIEGO (July 17, 2013) -- Delighting LEGO and Minecraft fans across the globe, The LEGO Group today announced it is extending its relationship with Swedish game developer Mojang to build on the blockbuster success of its first LEGO Minecraft building set to add two new models that will be released September 1, 2013.
LEGO Minecraft provides the opportunity to build, reconfigure and create new Minecraft micro-worlds in a physical LEGO way. The two new 3"x3"x3" models, The Village and The Nether, are on display for the first time at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Fans can also enjoy and take pictures with a large interactive 3D mosaic complete with Micromob character props at the LEGO booth (#2829)."
"LEGO Minecraft is a perfect example of how people's passions can be amplified when digital and physical interests are combined, and there couldn't be more synergy between the engine that drives the Minecraft gaming experience and the creative fuel of a LEGO building experience," said Michelle Wilson, senior brand manager for LEGO Systems, Inc. "We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Mojang to create new Minecraft characters and environments in LEGO form so that fans can get as creative as they'd like in their physical world as in their digital one."
"There's no doubt about the connection between LEGO building and Minecraft -- not only the design similarities, but the immense creativity that our fan bases share," said Lydia Winters, Mojang's director of fun. "Given how well received the first model was last year, we can't wait to see what fans think of these new designs."
LEGO Minecraft New Product Highlights
The Village
With this model, fans can create and customize their own Minecraft village with LEGO bricks. Just like the game, fans can build houses, grow crops and beware the mines in their own micro-world as well as play out their own storylines with Pig, Villager and Zombie constructible Micromob figures.
The Nether
Builders can create the Minecraft Obsidian Portal and The Nether to explore the newest biome with this microscale LEGO model, complete with Netherrack, gravel, flowing lava and bedrock. This model includes two Ghasts and one Zombie Pigman constructible Micromob figures.
The new LEGO Minecraft micro-scale models can be split into four sections and reconfigured for different play experiences. They will be available beginning September 1, 2013 with a suggested retail price of $34.99.

Wow, these are nice. I especially love the village. The Zombie is okay, I kind of wish they used the olive green colour for them though, but it's still good. The NPC is also pretty nice, though I think he should be one plate taller. AND THE PIG!
Overall, they're doing a great job on the Minecraft sets altogether. I'm quite impressed.

these are both a must buy for me - but I think it's odd we get 2 ghasts too. I think these will be great sellers.
I wonder if these mincraft sets continue to be popular, if they will continue into even more sets.
Is there any word if these will be sold at LEGO Stores like BTTF is going to be? Don't ask me why, but I much rather buy in store so I can 'see' it before I buy.
Considering that Minecraft is in the top-5 all time best selling video games, doesn't surprise me that they are comign out with some more sets.
I don't get it. Does one have to spend mindless hours on the game before they understand the appeal of these? I never saw the point of the original one and now there'll be two more... I'm shocked.
Great news for minecraft fans. But even better news for Cuusoo fans. This means that products/ideas of the Cuusoo line that sell well, have the chance to be expanded as a (small) series. Great!

I've never played Minecraft, so I can't speak to the accuracy of the sets, but I do know that those look like excellent parts packs! 1x1 tiles in earth/dark green and bright light orange, 2x2 inverted tile in white, and 1x1 plate in olive green, just for starters...
@ Ypres: I agree, I don't understand it either. What is good for LEGO, though, is good for me, and like PsyKater said, this is also good for future Cuusoo aspirations, should they ever actually choose to make reality an idea that I like.
As someone who follows LEGO CUUSOO closely, I have to agree with PsyKater. If a CUUSOO set is successful, as Minecraft was, LEGO may consider grabbing the necessary licenses for doing more sets... this is especially encouraging for all the people who would like a LEGO Zelda theme (provided one of the several projects passes), or a LEGO Back to the Future theme.
Though this does render some projects on CUUSOO completely useless...

These look worst than the last one and I didn't think that was possible.
Still cool that they are expanding on a great selling set. These better be cheaper than the $35 overprice original one.
@PsyKater: Yes, this means that Cuusoo projects can expand into a product line if the original product is successful. But it raises some questions:
1) Will a continued product line based on a Cuusoo product be produced in Cuusoo-sized batches, or in larger batches like ordinary sets?
2) Will a project creator be eligible for royalties from additional products based on the initial product? I can't imagine this would be the case, personally, unless the project is a licensed project based on an IP and the project creator holds the rights to that IP, as in the case of the Minecraft project. If the Café Corner were a Cuusoo project, for instance, I can't imagine that the creator would end up getting royalties for every subsequent modular building.
Regardless, these are nice sets. The fact that certain LEGO fans don't understand them should just be an indication that LEGO Cuusoo has done well at finding reliable markets for niche LEGO products, and that a project doesn't need to appeal to a mainstream AFOL audience to become a successful product or product line.
I'm so glad that we are getting new minecraft sets and they've done a great job with these ones. My only complaint is that these seem to look a fair bit smaller than the original.

Look excellent but I agree with the above I hope they're not £35 again seeing as they look smaller - way more hollow sections in these and not as tall.

I guess this shows that a single cuusoo product that does well, will become an entire series of products.
These sets are a great way of getting more 1x1 tiles (a really useful part), besides having great printing on the "minifigures"; very accurate. Also, is that Zombie Pigman holding a PEARL GOLD knife? :O
I like watching Minecraft videos so maybe I should get these and the game sometime...
This is great news; it shows that LEGO is willing to expand Cuusoo sets into a full theme (if you consider this a "theme")!

What did they do to the Villager? It looks awful.
I guess that may bold well for those that are close to 10k, that if blockbustery, more will come.
My son loves Minecraft.
But he has no interest in these except for the figure printed blocks.
He builds his own Minecraft worlds mostly with 1x1 bricks (which to me is a better scale than a 1x1 plate).
One word: PIG!
All I see is a whole load of tiles and plates. The printed parts are nice though. I for one am happy that TLG is making a successful set that I have no interest in. Good for the company, and good for my wallet. Win win.
The nether portal should have been four blocks wide instead of three blocks wide.

'The Nether' doesn't look quite right to me. 'The Village' looks very good though, and will certainly be on my lists.
These are awesome, I will be getting both of these sets. I'll also buy some as gifts for my cousins. Minecraft and lego go together so well. So awesome. I love the ghasts.
The only problem i see with these sets is that they are pretty expensive...
